Such a fabulous place. My friend and I booked the 3 hour horseback ride when we were vacationing in Colorado. I had ZERO horseback riding experience and was shocked at how much freedom they give new riders. We had a 5-10 minute huddle where we set expectations and went over basic commands, but then we were essentially free to ride! We stayed as a group, but rather than stay in a single file line, they really give you the freedom to go where you please. The ranch was beautiful, our guide was lovely, and every staff person we interacted with was so kind. If you don't have cash, they also let you leave a tip via credit card or venmo (depending on the guide), which was so helpful! Only other suggestion... bring bug spray and sunscreen!

I did the Cattle Drive last summer and couldn't recommend it more! The establishment is awesome and the horses are spectacular. The owners son gave me faith in the next generation as he was an example of manners and ability to converse with adults! This place was a dream and is fantastically ran! I'm hoping to take my guys here for my bachelor party this summer!

Wow. Just wow. The 2 hour ride is amazing with breathtaking views. We rode up a mountain, into the aspen trees and into the valley it snowed at the top and it is currently May. Pros: Shade was one of the best guides I've experienced, and he's knowledgeable. 50 horses Easy to book Quick saddle up Beautiful views Cons: None Just follow that road , that doesn't look like a real ride for 5 miles.

Nobody in our family had ever ridden a horse before, so we were nervous about the ride and opted to wear helmets just in case, but there really wasn't anything to be afraid of. The horses were all very tame, and were so accustomed to the leisurely stroll through the mountains that they didn't need much kicking and reining to get them going in the right direction - for the most part they just followed in a line behind the guide's lead horse. The weather in the mountains changes pretty quickly, and we were grateful that they provided raincoats when the cold rain started blowing in. The guide made sure we were comfortable, and when the sun came back out again he was happy to go around and gather up everyone's jackets. Make sure you add about fifteen minutes to your drive time if you're mapping it with your phone, since the address for the ranch on the mapping apps says you have arrived when you're really just at the beginning of the twisting 4.5-mile gravel road. Fair warning - you may be saddle-sore after the two-hour ride.

Regardless of where you're from or your skill level, this ranch has brainstormed every aspect of a customers ride and they cannot be beat. My wife and I went on the 3-4 hour trail ride today. I thought it was going to be like a theme park basic trail, nope! They had us climbing the mountain sides with views that cannot be beat. On top of that, they don't require you to stay in trail, blaze your own within ear shot of the guide. For these ranchers, it was all about the fun. But even better you can tell their love for their animals. They point out the ethical ways they stable, feed, and work their horses as to give them ample rest and care. It showed 100% in the temperament of the horses and how well they respond. This was an unforgettable experience for us and the highlight of our trip. Next time in Colorado, we will be back.

Our family took a glorious 2 hour ride with John and our small group- amazing team- we were warmly greeted as soon as we pulled into our parking spot, our group skillfully fitted to our horses and enjoyed breathtaking views with a self satisfying ride 'on our own terms' under the watchful eye of John. Such an exhilarating experience!

We drove here from Breckenridge and had an amazing day! I had ridden a horse 3 times but had never actually "controlled" my horse with reins. It was so fun! The scenery was like we were in a movie- amazing!! We took the three hour ride and it was perfect.

What a fabulous adventure! Everything was top notch. Our Guide, Shade, was full of knowledge & stories. Looked out for both us and the horses. Really can't say enough about how much we enjoyed this!

This review is a week late, so I apologize for my tardiness. This is the second horseback-riding trail I've done in Colorado (4th or 5th I've done in my life), and so far, my favorite! We did the 2-hour trail ride in late September, which happened to be the perfect time of year to go. You ride through several aspen tree groves and the leaves were absolutely stunning. I rode Butch, who was such a dapper gentleman--a bit naughty when I was taking photos, sneaking a bite of sage while I wasn't paying attention, but an absolute joy! Whether you have experience with horses or not, this trail ride will be perfect for you. There is no trotting or quick riding, the horses are not encouraged to go past a walk so if you're uneasy, don't worry, your guide will be there the whole time and only one horse in our group of 8 attempted to trot but her rider reined her in quickly and she stopped. I have some experience riding and being around horses so I know how sassy and persistent they can be, but these horses had a great temperament and while they like to stop and snatch a bite to eat (which isn't allowed because they're working), just be consistent and stern with them and they'll focus on the walk. I can easily say these horses had the best temperament I've seen on trail-riding horses; they're all very docile and happy. This is also the first ever trail ride I've done that allowed and encouraged riders to ride side-by side and not keep them restricted to a straight line. I never really minded being told to stay in a straight line on trail rides, but now that I've had the freedom of a more communal ride where you can actually converse with your friends, I feel like I'll hate being restricted to a straight line lol. Our guide was one of the owners and she was incredible! She told us all about the area and all about our horses that we were on this journey with. Not only was our guide amazing, the entire staff was so kind and fun to chat with. You're my girl Patti! The only downside of this stable, it's pretty far--I live in central Denver and the stable was in Kremmling. Honestly, I enjoyed this ride so much, I'll probably force my guests to journey the 2 - 2.5 hour drive just for the experience--particularly if it's in the fall. It's rare to feel content with the amount of golden leaves I've seen in the fall, but after that ride, I somehow feel like I have my aspen tree fill for the year. Trust me, it's worth it! Some might also say a downside is that the only bathroom is a porter potty, however it's the nicest and cleanest potter potty I've ever seen so I don't consider it a downside at all--It's a ranch, don't be boojie. I strongly recommend this experience, it might be a bit far, but the drive is beautiful, the ride is great and the staff is amazing. Driving tip: If your maps tell you to take a road called "County/Country Line 385" ignore this direction and drive past that road--it'll auto route you to the correct road. That road is a residential entrance with a "No trespassing" sign. You'll know you turned down the correct road when you see the signs for the Rusty Spurr Ranch.

Outstanding experience! From start to finish we had a great time. Our guides, Carrie and Sierra were so kind and knowledgeable. We had a big group and they accommodated us no problem. What a beautiful ride through some gorgeous countryside. I cannot recommend this enough. Out of a trip where we did obstacle courses, amazing hikes, white water rafting and more, this was our favorite group activity by far. Thank you, Rusty SpurRanch for a fantastic horse experience.

Great Time Riding Horses at The Rusty Spurr Ranch! My girlfriend and I did a 2-hour ride in late August at the Rusty Spurr Ranch. The ranch is easy to find, just look for the sign on the side of the road. Once you hit the dirt road, follow it about 4-5 miles and you can't miss the ranch. Everyone working there was very nice and helpful. Our guide was great, took pictures for us, and led us on a beautiful ride through their 10,000 acre ranch. We were able to ride on our own, picking our own trails, following the guide. Even as a beginner, it was very easy to control the horse. The 2 hours went by really fast, we wished we had booked the 4 hour ride. Yes, I highly recommend horseback riding at the Rusty Spurr Ranch! Great employees, beautiful scenery, and very good horses.

Folks! If you have not gone to see the guys and gals at Rusty Spur Ranch, you are missing out! Experienced the cattle drive today and it was nothing short of absolutely awesome. The guides were great, we got to run all over open acres of pasture via horseback. The weather was absolutely spectacular and the views were nothing short of stunning. Got done after a few hours and came back to the stables and office to devour a great lunch of burgers and some homemade potato salad. Everyone at the ranch goes out of their way to make sure you're comfortable and make sure that you got everything you need to enjoy yourself and have a good time. Would absolutely repeat, would recommend to anyone and everyone, the only thing is to make sure to bring cash to give the guides a tip. We screwed up on this one however they made sure to make it right with a little credit card wizardry. Highly highly highly recommend. Cannot say enough good things about Rusty Spur read more

These people have the right idea! They're truly passionate about what they do and why they do it. I have rode horses all my life and they horses were we'll trained and had a calm demeanor to them. We were visiting from Florida and our friend came from Denver and we couldn't stop talking about this place long after we left. I rode Maverick and my girlfriend was on a beautiful horse named Pocahontas. My friend was on a beautiful draft horse - I forget his name but a gorgeous horse. Hahn and Kelsey were amazing ranchers who showed us the land and made sure we all were comfortable throughout our cattle drive. I highly recommend this place and get outdoors to explore Colorado horseback! We'll definitely be returning on our next trip! read more

We headed to RSR while spending some time in Breck. Called the day before to place our reservation. Would have done a group ride but heard that a family signed up and would rather do a private ride, especially as we were celebrating our anniversary. Though pricey, we were very glad we did private rides. We got personal attention and plenty of fun facts that we really enjoyed learning. Our ride was very personalized -we were able to describe the type of landscapes and views we hoped to see while spending time riding and Connie did a great job touring Colorado's best countryside for us. She was big on history and culture and also helped us city folk learn about the livestock we passed along the way. The horses are well cared for and the cleanest I've seen! The wranglers taught us that they discourage the horses from grazing during our ride, as they have already eaten and are only worked for four hours a day. It's bad manners, they said, for the horse to stop and grab a snack while we are riding. They asked that we help enforce this while riding by not allowing the horses to graze. They are sneaky animals, of course, and my horse, Westie, snuck a few bites, which I thought was hilarious! But for the most part, we were happy to oblige. Our horses were extremely well-behaved and mild-mannered. The Ranch was easy to find. If you follow the directions they give you, rather than GPS, you will have no trouble finding it. Loved riding at Rusty Spur Ranch and would highly recommend if you're looking for a clean, friendly stable! read more

This was a wonderful organization and they provided an excellent ride! My wife and I went on a three hour trail ride on the fourth of July holiday. Our ride leader, Connie, and the rest of the staff were true horse and outdoor lovers. We rode in a small group of seven people, but we were also allowed to spread out a bit through the prairie during much of the ride. My wife and I are not experienced riders, but we were patiently taught everything we needed to know and had extremely cooperative, well cared-for horses. Connie had an extensive knowledge of both horses and the area we were riding in, and was also very pleasant and encouraging of the varying ages and experience levels in the group. Just be forewarned that the ranch is a good 1+ hour drive from Breck, and the last few miles are on a desolate, dusty county road where you will think you made a wrong turn somewhere. Confirm you are on the right road, but then keep going and you will be rewarded with a ride in a very remote, beautiful area with no other riders or people around. Highly recommended! read more

Rusty Spurr was the highlight of our trip to Colorado. Chuck was our tour guide and quickly became a family favorite. Our family was in a group together, it was pretty nice being the only ones on our particular trip out. As we getting ready to leave our teenager decided he wanted to stay a couple extra hours, so he locked the keys in the car. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and helped us out finding a "local" locksmith. We will be back next year for sure. I can't recommend this experience enough. read more

It was amazing! Our guide was so informative and it was great not to have to ride nose-tail the whole time. We stopped at a great photo op and the guide took our pictures. It was a small group, our family of 3 and another family of 4. Highly recommend! read more

Had a lovely time on a 2 hour trail ride! It was so relaxing and beautiful. All of the horses on property seem to be fantastic. Really loved bonding with Whiskey (the horse I rode) during the trail ride. I highly recommend doing this if you're in the area. I drove in from Denver for a morning ride and I'm so glad I did! read more

My boyfriend and I planned a week trip to colorado with nothing really set in stone except for to go horseback riding here. Upon arriving to Rusty Spurr Ranch Connie quickly greeted us and made us feel right at home. We got there fairly early and were able to walk around a little bit, check out the horses, and mess around with a lasso they had laying around. Pete, our wonderful tour guide, loaded us up on our horses, gave us a quick safety briefing, and we were off. Pete took us on a free range 2-hour trail ride that had spectacular views of Gore Canyon. He was so kind and informative, his knowledge of the land and outdoors was very impressive. After the tour was complete Pete and Trish, a new volunteer at the Ranch, gave us so many recommendations on where to go, what to see and especially places to go eat. The hospitality and whole experience here at Rusty Spurr Ranch is one that you do not want to miss out on. Book your trip soon! They fill up fast. read more

We had such a great experience today at Rusty Spurr Ranch! It was a first time ride for my husband and daughters and we did a 1 hour ride. The staff was responsive from the beginning when I made the reservation all the way through to selecting horses for each of us. The entire staff was so kind and made us feel comfortable right away. I liked that we could ride side by side and veer from the path so it didn't feel like a run of the mill trail ride. Our guide was really knowledgeable about the area and the horses. I loved learning that the horses run at night and that they are well cared for and humanely treated. Highly recommend! We will be back for a longer ride next time. read more

AMAZING! Family of five went today. Perfect activity for social distancing. Shade was our guide. He was fantastic. This ride will take your breath away. He took us through beautiful paths in the mountainside. His knowledge of the area and horses in general, was vast. It is a pricey activity but worth every penny! read more

Rusy Spurr Ranch takes great care of their horses, which is a must for me, as I have witnessed awful conditions elsewhere. The staff is awesome! The take great care in making sure each rider is matched with the appropriate horse for their riding level, whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider. The scenerary was breath-taking! Our guide, Bart, was awesome. I am an intermediate rider and Bart taught me some basic skills to be a better rider. I was thirlled to learn something new! We went on a 3-hr ride and I didn't want it to end. My horse, Scooter, was a dream to ride! I will be back before they close for the Summer! Thank you Rusy Spurr! read more

Man, what can i say? Incredible! We left Breck at 7am to be at the ranch by 8am. We we're greeted by the staff upon arrival and we were explained what to expect for our cattle drive! The staff went the extra mile and offered my girlfriend a band-aid for her cut on her hand as well as a glove for riding. We hung around and met others who joined our group until Han, the cowboy, came to greet us. He politely introduced himself and inquired each of us about our riding experience. I had no experience riding and he made feel comfortable even though i was nervous. Shortly the wranglers brought the horses out and got us acquainted with our specific horse. While on our horses, Han went over the basic riding maneuvers in a clear and concise manner which was simpler than i thought. We began our journey riding west into the hills and mountains of thevast Colorado country. Han,at all times made us feel safe and comfortable with our horses. He insisted we interact with our horse by asking them to stop, speed up, turn etc. This made me feel much more in control and confident. Han led the way at all times and guided us with clear instructions. The views and fresh air smells (aside from the horse poop) were incredible. We rode for a few miles until Han sent his dogs to scout for cattle. Once we found the cattle, Han explained how to push them in certain desirable directions. Riding the horses in a vast open land with nothing but you and others is an unforgettable experience. Han also conversed with all of us during the ride and we all got to know each other just a bit better. After a long 4 hours, we rode back to the ranch and they fed us food and gave us refreshments to recover our enegy from the long ride. We were welcomed to keep hanging around the ranch as long as we wanted to take photos or talk to the staff. What makes them great is that they are truly invested in making sure that you have a memorable experience. read more

This was the highlight of our week long Colorado vacation. This coming from a non-horse person Wrangler Valerie was the best. The horses were great. Family friendly, we rode with our 8 year old son. He was nervous at first but with a little encouragement from our wrangler he was quickly riding on his own The Rusty Spurr encourages spreading out and learning how to really ride! read more

If you are looking for an authentic cattle drive, this is the place to go. Han and Connie have a nice outfit, we rode all morning and then had lunch at the ranch. I have never driven cattle anywhere in my life, and my wife had never ridden a horse! Very little experience was required because Han and his wranglers were excellent teachers. We drove 160 head of cattle from the watering hole out to another pasture about 3 miles away. Very fun... definitely got saddle sore. Would do it again! Great western experience with a fun group. Allow time from the main road to the ranch, as it is on the end of a 2 mile dirt road. Yee haw. read more

I went on a 2 hour ride led by Matty and Kirby and they were very interesting and made the ride a great experience. I'm no horse expert, but the horses seemed a little slow, both mentally and physically. They're certainly not as responsive as my Chrysler 300 (push to start). There are great views of the mountains along the ride and you might even see some stray cows (the nasty looking brown and black kind that continuously snot from their noses, not the nice white ones with the black spots that make milk for kids). read more

Connie, wow, what an amazing time. The day was gorgeous and our guide Chuck was the best. Great prices and very friendly staff that I can not give enough kudos too. We had such a great time! Connie was an absolutely wonderful guide....she conversed so easily with everyone in our group, from my youngest daughter to my father-in-law. You can tell when someone enjoys their job, and Connie definitely has a love for the horses and a passion for making sure that others truly enjoy their ride and experience. We also really liked that the ride wasn't a generic "nose-to-butt" single-file line....they let you spread out a little and control your horse as you feel comfortable. Thank you for a great experience! read more

Rusty Spurr Ranch was amazing! I have been to many stables to ride and this was one of the best experiences. Don't let the drive deter you from booking as it's well worth it. Staff was very warm and welcoming from the start. Horses are well cared for and it's not nose to tail riding -- they encourage you to spread out and you have some autonomy. I felt as if they really matched the rider to the best horse to further enhance the experience. The views are truly magnificent and our ride took us through open space, trees and up to areas I would never have seen. I would highly recommend! read more

CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE ENOUGH! The staff is fantastic, the owners are wonderful, and the horses (and cattle) are well cared for. We went on a cattle drive with Han (the owner) and his 6 year old son (who is a wonderful kid and rider) and had THE BEST experience. They are so welcoming of any comfort level which, as an experienced rider, is very important to me. You are able to ride where you want (within ear shot for safety) and at the speed you want interacting with the cattle as much as you are comfortable with. The ranch is definitely off the beaten path but we will absolutely be returning if we are ever within a 2 hour radius (it would be well worth the drive)! read more

It was clear we made a great choice with the folks at Rusty Spurr Ranch when we arrived. The horses are happy and clearly cared for. The staff also cares for the folks that come to visit there. The horses were saddled up and ready to go. The horses are matched to the rider's ability level, so beginners can feel comfortable. The staff got the group ready to go, briefed everyone on safety issues, and answered any questions. We were promptly on our way. Our guide Connie was wonderful and informative, with local knowledge and lore shared along the way. The ride took us through a wonderful area of open hills and through trails covered in aspen trees, climbing up to around 9000 feet elevation and back down. No boring flat ride here. The ride is very free form; there's no 'nose to tail' except on a couple trails where there's no other choice. When we got back to the corral area, it was very nice to not have the silly gift shop and someone taking our picture to sell it back to us later for $25. We would rather hug the horses and tip our guide! The visit to Rusty Spurr Ranch offered real people, real horses, and real fun. read more

Such a wonderful experience! I opted for a 2 hour private ride and could not have been happier. August 7th was a beautiful Colorado morning, the staff set us up quickly and professionally and introduced us to our guide Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn is a young Cowgirl with an awesome amount of interesting information concerning the Ranch and the local wildlife. Because of my size 6'4" 250lbs. I needed a very large horse to ride and they had a Clydesdale named Buddy who was perfect match for me. We had a really nice ride through the Sage Brush prairie, Pine Tree's and the especially nice Aspen Groves. Kaitlyn also rode us through an area where we spotted a nice Doe Mule Deer with a Fawn lying down peacefully together soaking up the morning sun- awesome! We also saw many different birds from Swallows to Magpies, all beautiful and interesting in their own way. All of the employees seemed to be pretty young cowgirls who were happy and having a good time with the guests. I could not recommend the Rusty Spur Ranch enough to anyone reading this review. Thank You Ladies for such a nice ride, maybe we will see you again next summer. read more

This place is great! The owner Connie and wrangler Amanda are very nice. This is not your typical "nose to tail" horseback ride. They encourage you to spread out and guide your horse. Took the two hour ride and loved it. The aspen were changing colors and the views were amazing! Stacy and I had a truly magical experience at Rusty Spur Ranch today. The cattle drive was absolutely incredible -- beautiful horses, breathtaking scenery, and wildlife everywhere we looked. We saw Golden Eagles soaring overhead, antelope roaming through the landscape, and got to experience a little taste of authentic Colorado ranch life. A huge thank you to Connie and Jonah, who were magnificent guides. They were knowledgeable, friendly, and made the entire experience even more special. This wasn't just a cattle drive -- it was an unforgettable Colorado adventure that Stacy and I will be talking about for a long time. We absolutely loved every minute of it and highly recommend Rusty Spur Ranch! read more

During our recent stay in Breckenridge, Co, we decided to go riding. Rusty Spurr was a little bit of a drive but worth it. We booked a private ride and enjoyed every second, the flowers were in full bloom (June) and the views were incredible. Our guide was very informative, friendly, and gave instructions when we needed. She was very pleasant and interesting as well as keeping our comfort and safety in the forefront. We will definitely ride with them again and highly recommend this ranch to all. read more
