This is one of our favorite places ever! My husband loves it and today was his birthday and we came here from the San Fernando Valley for lunch. Food is always spot on and we can never leave without Lone Ranger cookies. Service is friendly and consistent. Today there was a fire in nursing home around the corner and the fire department had a block closed to assist the situation. Where does this tie into Rutabegorz? I've been to the Tustin location and today was my first time at the Fullerton location. I found parking easily across the street and it wasn't too crowded since it was a Thursday after 1pm. The restaurant is seat yourself which initially made me wonder how the server would know I'm here, but within moments of sitting down my waitress took my drink order. Service is definitely efficient and friendly. The 3 stars is based on food only. I can't remember what I ordered at the Tustin location but it was lackluster and I haven't been compelled to go back since. This Fullerton location was the same despite its quirky and interesting decor and layout. I ordered their version of a Cobb salad and I hated the baby corn. It's is obviously from the can and took away from the freshness of the salad. The Cobb also did not include bacon which is a key component. I ordered a grilled cheese off the kid's menu for my toddler and sub the squaw bread. However the cheese was not melted throughly and was simply a sad grilled cheese. It also came with a small side of macaroni salad and a few pieces of fruit. The idea was there but poorly execution. Maybe I need to order a sandwich or wrap, but so far not in love with the food at the locations I've dined at so far. I may come back but it would have to be at someone else's suggestion. read more

My mom brother and I went in for a late lunch on the weekend. Mom and I got there first and we found a table right away (open seating). However, once we sat down, a server did not approach us for a solid 10-15 minutes, even though many walked by and talked to the table next to us. The manager/someone did come by and apologize shortly after which I thought was good on their part. We started with some tomato basil hummus, who can beat the price?! And its delicious! I've never had this flavor of hummus- it was devoured quickly by all. I had the falafel wrap and enjoyed it. The veggies and sauce on it were yummy. The portion was perfect and very filling. My mom had the quinoa tacos. It was a huge plate of quinoa and taco toppings with 3-4 tortillas underneath. The dish left much to be desired in terms of flavor but maybe it was just the two bites I had. I also had a soup of the day- spicy Mediterranean bean which was hearty and delicious. Our server did forget my brother's juice order, I had to remind her after it had been 20 minutes to which she honestly told us she forgot. Solid 4 stars for the veg friendly food and cool/chill vibe. Pre-Covid review. Been coming to Rutabegorz for years! My absolute favorite menu item is granny is on fire sandwich, sourdough bread, sliced green apples, big slices of ham, jalapeño slices and melty cheddar cheese. It's so good sometimes I get a cup of soup or chili, love daily soups and the chili. Love the big salads with tons of fresh ingredients, and the enchiladas are a family favorite. Monthly hummus appetizer dip is always fun to try, and they have great drinks ranging from tea to soda to juice and beer! Inside is fun decor, staff is good sometimes a little slow, and a great option of desserts. My sister came to visit. Since she's vegetarian, we tried to find a vegetarian-friendly restaurant for dinner. Rutabegorz has rave reviews on Yelp. We had high hope, but left very disappointed. The restaurant is quaint and cute. Guests seat themselves once inside the restaurant. We found a table and sat down. A very nice busboy cleared our table and brought us the menus. Then 20 minutes went by. We watched the waitress took everyone's order, even the people who came in later than us. But she completely ignored us. Wouldn't even make eye contact kind of ignoring us. We couldn't even flag her down. Finally we couldn't take it anymore. So my sister actually went to the little back room to get her to come take our order. She just said to my sister, "oh I was really busy with all the other tables." When she finally came to take our order, all she said was "hi". No smile, no sorry. * Veggie Lasagna | $10.50 Made with three cheeses, spinach and marinara sauce. Served with garlic pita bread. Veggie Lasagna was just ok. Lots of cheese. It was comfort food, but nothing special about it. * Veggie Enchiladas | $10.95 A veggie blend of corn, carrots, zucchini, potatoes and tomatoes, stuffed in 2 corn tortillas and covered with cheese and a mild red sauce. Topped with avocado and served with brown rice, beans & chips. Veggie Enchiladas was also just alright. I didn't get many veggies in the enchiladas. Just mouthful of carrots. And the red sauce wasn't really a sauce. It was like dry red bean paste? We wanted to like the restaurant, but ended up complete hating it. Food was five stars! The food was delicious absolutely great but the service was lacking! When you walk in there is a sign that says seat yourself, except the empty tables haven't been cleared so you can't seat yourself. You have to ask for a table to cleared before you can sit. After seating ourselves, we waited to place our drink orders, then waited for our drinks. We finally placed our food order which they lost and had to place it again. Our food finally came and it was delicious couldnt get extra napkins and refills were given after we finished eating. So like I said, food was excellent, service was lacking. I think I just overdosed on pumpkin, but it was sooooooo worth it. Started out with their awesome $.42 appetizer which was pumpkin hummus. A small portion served with chips. Definitely worth the cheap price tag. It didn't have an overwhelming amount of pumpkin, was colored orange and had a little bit of a kick to it. I liked it. Even if I didn't- it was only $.42--- Next on the list was the pumpkin soup that I look forward to each and every year. Got a bowl and it came out at a scalding temperature. I can't tell you how many times I burned my tongue, but I had to have it. It's a nice creamy base with mushrooms and other spices infused with it. Again, not too powerful on the pumpkin flavor, so if you don't like pumpkin, you probably wont hate this one. We split the the cranberry turkey sandwich- something I HAVE to have when I come here. As always, that was delicious. Finished the meal with a pumpkin cookie. It was like a small, sweet, fluffy cake. Sooo good. The frosting on top was sweet, but added to the cookie before being too much sugar. I kinda wish I would have ordered another one to go. First time ever & have known about the Tustin & Orange locations for many years. I even lived in the Tustin/Orange Hills area for some 21 years. Anyway, met my brother & Sis in-law today for lunch & I can tell you my wife & I both loved it. It's quirky inside with a younger hipper crowd. I used to come here a lot about ten years ago. I don't remember what I used to get, so when I had lunch here with some friends today I was not sure what to order. I ended up going with a cup of Cockie Leeky soup and the Chicken Twocos. My friends ordered a Vegetarian Sandwich and Garlic Chicken Pasta. We didn't have to wait too long for the entrees and my soup was out right away. My soup was DELICIOUS!!! It was a really thick, creamy soup with really good tasting chicken and rice. The menu doesn't say there are mushrooms in it, but I swear there were. Both of my friends kept commenting on how good it smelled. And it did. I will definitely come back here just for that soup! My tacos were massive. In fact all of our dishes were huge, we all ended up taking at least half home. My tacos were good but almost too big. Very hard to eat. They put way too much stuff in the small tortillas, they should have given me three tacos. And there was a LOT of lettuce. It was like a salad taco. But the avocado on it was great, and they were not stingy with it, which was nice. My friends also loved their food. They both were really glad I suggested Rutabegorz and they said they will probably come back, my one friend lives out in Canyon Lake and she said she would drive out to eat here again! Sigh, it's a start of a new year and I'm back to my goal of saying "eat healthier." Well, for the time being. Anyways, this place is the perfect place if you're trying to eat healthy. Located in Downtown Fullerton, it was pretty easy to find from the usual bars I typically frequent. It is pretty roomy, with lots of tables scattered throughout. They have seats inside and outside of the restaurant. They decorate the walls with some of their cute shirts/sweatshirts with cute sayings. You actually seat yourself, so that's cool. It was pretty crowded when I went today, but we found a table in one of the rooms. The menu is extensive. Trust - you'll have trouble deciding on what you want to get. They have soups, salads, wrap-ups, sandwiches, desserts, smoothies, wine & beer and so much more. I had a tough time deciding between The Ultimate Salad ($10.95), which had ham, salami, cheeses, shrimp, and avocado along with lettuce and lots of fresh veggies, and the Chicken and Avocado Salad ($10.75), which had chicken, cheeses, avocado, walnuts, lettuce, and all the fresh veggies. I ended up getting The Ultimate Salad. Dood, I was sooooo surprised when it came out though! It came out in a HUGE mixing bowl. It was freaking beastly! There was so much! And when they say fresh veggies, they MEAN fresh veggies. Everything in the giant mixing bowl was so fresh and crisp! One of the best salads I've had in a while! I got pretty full, but it looked like I had barely touched it! I had to take it home to-go. Service was good I guess. You'd think they'd still be everywhere instead of 1 per town given people's professed desire for healthier food. With that in mind, the stakes were raised for a promising meal. - Atmosphere: Unpretentious. How a restaurant would look and feel in 2012 if it were owned by hippies from the 1960s and 1970s. I mean that in a good way. - Food: The portions were king size. Lots of stuff on every plate. My vegetable burrito was filled to the brim. When it arrived, I felt fat, dumb and happy because I tend to overlook quality if I've got quantity. But after a few bites, I looked at my daughter-in-law and said "I think the taste is missing". She smiled and said "same here". Since I don't like to load up on salt, pepper and other condiments...except for ketchup which I try to do in private...the food usually needs to stand or fall on its own. It wasn't bad. It just wasn't really there. Even the much heralded cockie-leekie soup fell a tad short. Although the look and texture were creamy, it had the flavor of warm milk. Maybe my taste buds had the night off? - Service: Leisurely. We sat for 10 minutes trying to guess which server belonged to our table. Not that there were many choices. Finally, she arrived. She was friendly, but seemed pre-occupied...probably with her 10 other tables. The kitchen seemed to handle the load quite well since our dishes came about when expected. However, we did request the dip-of-the-day...but it never arrived. At least it wasn't listed on our bill. - Price: Very reasonable. You could fill up and get a bit of change back from a tab of $20 per person. Overall, the execution was a bit short of its promise. If your taste buds are aligned with the very subtle flavors of a dish, the experience might be worth 4 or 5 stars. Came here again for lunch (but this time, dined in) and loved the casual atmosphere and yummy salad. I opted for the Garlic Chicken Salad, and the small size was generously portioned! It came in a huge blue bowl with lettuce on the very bottom and garlic chicken, cucumbers, tomatoes, avocado, crunchy noodles, and caramelized walnuts layered on top. Balsamic vinaigrette is paired by default on the side. Ingredients were fresh, and the subtle sweetness from the caramelized walnuts bits was very enjoyable. I can do without the balsamic vinaigrette since I found it a bit oily. I believe you can choose any of their house made dressings which I will for sure do next time. Rutabegorz is a small hidden hole in the wall restaurant in Fullerton. It looks like a house from the outside but once you go inside it's like experiencing Narnia. The inside has multiple tables to the left and to the right. You walk and find any table that is empty and one of the waiters will help you when you sit down. If it looks busy, there is an outside section in the back so if it's a nice day you should consider having lunch outside! The menu includes many items from soups, wraps, salads, and sandwiches. I tried The Walnut that Kissed the Chicken sandwich and it was a delish dish. The sandwich was on super soft bread (squaw bread) and the chicken was mixed with walnuts, celery, and mayo for a crunchy tasty meal. It was served with a small side of potato salad, pickle, and a slice of melon. The potato salad was okay but my favorite part about the sandwich is the slight crunch in the chicken mix and the squaw bread! My friends both got salads for lunch. The salads are super fresh as if they picked all the ingredients in the back themselves. Warning! The portions are big so consider sharing! One salad will probably fill two adults or maybe even three. My friends got the Chinese Chicken and Summer Salad and they were both gangsta. One ordered the strawberry salad while the other one ordered the veggie tacos, delicious!! Our waiter was a young man (sorry forgot his name) and he was outstanding. For dessert we ordered the apple pie a La mode, another winner!! I am looking forward to visiting again with my family. Check the picture i posted of the piece of salad I found in the bowl. It was brown!! nasty. and the turkey sandwich I had was nothing special. I could have made the same thing at home for $2. I am utterly disappointed with this place. I should have known better. This was a bad way to end a week where I had eaten so much good food. As others have said the food was seriously bland. dont have high hopes if you come here. if your idea of a great sandwich or meal is enormous portions then you will love this place. for me, i like quality over quantity any day. read more

Rutabegorz - Found this beautiful piece of lettuce in my salad - Bars Near Me - Fullerton, California

Before coming here I thought I had this place all figured out. I thought this place was where all the health nuts, hipsters, frou frous, people with dead tastebuds went. Usually when I think of healthy food restaurants I think, bland and flavorless while being more expensive. (ie: Veggie Grille) Well, I'll admit it, I was wrong about you Rutabegorz. Sowee~ Ashley H had been wanting to treat me out for my bday for the longest and so a month later we went to Rutabegorz. Besides the fact that I was a little grossed out by the plates & bowls they serve their food in everything else was great. Idk why but the colorful plastic plates and bowls just give me the heebie jeebies for a reason I cannot explain. Anyways I started off with the Cocky Leeky soup and for something that is made with non dairy products that soup was creeeaaaammmy! I was really surprised at how good the soup was especially with my generous sprinkling of black pepper. Ashley H and I both ordered salads, Ashley ended up getting the kale salad with poppy dressing from the specials menu while I ordered the falafel salad from the original menu. These salads are huge, so even though the salads were $10+ I wouldn't feel too bad spending that kind of money on a bowl full of veggies when you get so many different kinds with a good amount of protein too. The falafel salad was a-okay not amazeballs to be honest, the falafel was pretty tasty, but against Ashley's delicious kale salad there was just no competition. I was regretful that i didn't order the kale salad myself. Sweet and fresh the salad had turkey, walnuts and dates inside that all just tasted so good with the bountiful kale. Dammit, I want some more. Obviously I'm going to have to come back and try out their other salads and offerings now that I know they know how to make tasty healthy food here, especially when having lunch with a gf and we want to make ourselves feel better about the AYCE KBBQ we had during the week. read more

I have a personal connection to Rutaz. We have a lot of family stuff there...my brother's wedding reception (yes, you heard me), my sister in law's baby shower. The owners are really awesome and accommodating. Food wise, everything here is fresh, healthy, veg friendly. The salads are all top notch. I also love the hummus, fresh salsa, chili, and garlic chicken anything (sandwich/pasta). Down side is their menu is too freaking huge. I get overwhelmed with large menus and would prefer places to concentrate on fewer dishes. That's just me though, I know some diners like lots o'options. Friendly, casual atmosphere and good service is you get the right waitress (Angel). Also try the cheesecake because it's the best I've had outside of NY. read more

Miles H. is a great server. The food was great as always. The pico de gallo was on point and the egg sandwich was delicious.

Inventive, hearty entree salads, great soups, healthy entrees. This place just calls to me! I've never had difficulty ordering here but I can always tell that my boyfriend is at a loss for good choices. His comment is that this is a "chick" restaurant and wishes that it offered sides b/c there's nothing worse than a $10 sandwich.
