If you don't work, you may be able to sit through their up sell presentation. But for working professionals, it is not easy. I bought a group on deal for my parents. They are both shy so I was concerned about how they would feel posing for Ryan. My mom came home really excited after the sitting. She said she had so much fun with Ryan. They all laughed the whole time and the pictures came out great. Even though the groupon was purchased, he took tons of pictures and made my parents feel really good and special which is really important to me. I'm going to buy another session with him for a family portrait. The process of booking was also very easy and convenient. Ryan is a fun and delightful photographer to work with. My daughter was the subject of the shoot. She was shy and timid at first, since this is her first shoot. Ryan made her feel at ease, relaxed. He even cracked jokes and comments to make her more comfortable. The shoot went very well. Although, he should come up with more poses for the shoot. We came away with a lot of double poses. I suppose the reason for this is that he specializes in babies & small children. Got a groupon to go here - ended up loving it! Ryan is such a professional, relaxed guy with obvious photography skills. We did black and whites for our baby boy. I'm a pretty cheap guy when it comes to photography. I bought a DSLR recently just so i wouldn't have to pay a photographer, but with a groupon, I thought why not. From Ryan, you don't get high res digitals, so you have to order prints from them. However, the quality of the photos was enough to get me to buy some prints despite my cheapness :0) On top of this, I saw some of his other products and will definitely be going back. read more

Ryan has taken a bunch of pictures of both of our kids and we've been super happy with him. Ryan works hard and does what it takes to get smiley, happy images from my kids. He even let us re-shoot a session when my daughter was being a big grump. Another reviewer also mentioned Las Madres - he's been super supportive of this charitable organization over the years and I appreciate that too. For those that complain about a lack of full resolution digital files, Ryan is not a "shoot and burn photographer." He's not doing this on the side to bring in a little extra income. He's been educated in photography, he has insurance, he pays taxes. He lives and breathes photography. I, like many of you, use Yelp to check out services of a vendor before booking, I just happen to be looking up Ryan's phone number when I came across some of these review and just had to give you a very different perspective. Let me start off by saying, I am not related or friends with anyone that works there. I met Ryan 7 years ago when he worked a Las Madres event and trying to grow his practice. I have been a customer every year ever since we met. He is professional, punctional, organzied, knows how to work with kids and has impecable timing on his shots. I now have 2 kids 7 and 2. That ain't easy to get both of them looking and smiling. I, like most of you, have tried other places, but Ryans work is well above anything you will get at Sears, Picture People, etc. and I get out of all of these places for the same price. Why is he good? The lighting is right and the timing of what he captures in his lens is amazing. Don't believe me? Proof is in the pudding. Email me and I can shoot you 7 years of easter and/or Christmas pictures. He brings a fresh perspective to all of his pictures. As far as cost, I find his prices competitive with any of the other places listed above. Painless and perfect. I needed headshots for my business, and normally work in tanktops & shorts, so I was nervous...could I look professional??? I did the groupon and am thrilled with what I'm getting for the price. I will be back for family shots since I was so impressed with his knowledge and professionalism. When I made the appointment, his assistant made good recommendations for what to wear, what jewelry to use and how much makeup, so I felt pretty comfortable in my black shirt and denim skirt. On the day of my appointment, he was running late and called me 20 minutes before my scheduled time which I thought was great since I was able to work for another 20 minutes. He then spent 5 minutes talking with me about my personality, my business, and I showed him some samples on the web of headshots that I liked. He chose grey for my background, and I couldn't be happier. We had a lot of fun taking about 40 pictures, and narrowing it down to 9 solid photos which I can use on my websites which was my goal. We have done three sessions with Ryan. He is a great photographer and takes amazing pictures. Ryan is great with my daughter and can get her to pose and smile for the camera. He made my husband and I both feel very comfortable and was able to get great family portraits. He also is good at touching up photos to lessen wrinkles and remove acne. Ryan took our photographs in our home as per our scheduled session. He seemed OK in person. Final photos seem above average at best, considering the amount of money they charge. However, after we ordered photos from this place (pre-paid via credit card) 2 photographs had clear issues. In 1 photo, our dog had a dark blurry line and in the second photo with my baby, my head was chopped off from the photo! These two hard copies (small and mediums sizes) were around/above $150 !!! Both him and his wife never bothered to speak to us in person in spite of numerous phone calls we made to contact them. I left them a voicemail saying that we needed resolution and the only response we got was on the lines of "That's how the photos were taken...." Every time I call them, the phone goes to voicemail. Poor customer service, poor photographs, unreasonable resolution. We feel cheated as we paid a lot of money for baby photography and are not getting the expected, professional outcome. Expect me to file a consumer complaint for fair resolution. read more

I also got Living Social here and booked a maternity photo shoot. Honestly, I wish they would do thing less on the phone and more online but I guess that's their way of doing business. I ended up liking the pictures though! Although I was a little sad b/c I did the maternity session solo no hubby in pix b/c my he found out he had a meeting last second. I didn't want to get charged for rescheduling. :( I wish they didn't charge for things like that. Also, I wish you could see the proofs online and decide in the privacy of your own home what you want to buy... It was a little tough trying to schedule things since you have to get a hold of Jessica to schedule things. I don't understand why you can't just schedule w/ Ryan or Jamie right after you have the photo shoot to see the proofs?!? I usually try to be nice and not leave a bad review for a place. But Ryan Willis Photography is just too much! Ryan Willis photography MAKES ME SUPER UPSET at them! Please be clear, I'm not upset at Ryan's photography skill, but the way they do business. First off, we bought the Groupon for $39 dollars. The deal states: professional photographer includes CD with 10 images 10% discount for extra prints thoughtful holiday gifts We thought we had a great deal. Calling them was so much of a hassle because no one seems to pick up. When they did, the lady over the phone sounded pissed off. Still, we paid for the Groupon, so we booked our appointment. They only allow weekdays appointment. FINE. We booked our weekday appointment. I wore my wedding gown and my husband in his suit. We were planning to use some of the pictures for our wedding album. Ryan was pretty good and professional. We liked him. When we're done with the photoshoot, they asked us to make an appointment to view the pictures. We asked if we can view them online, but no. NO ONLINE GALLERY VIEWING???!!! We have to drive all the way from Santa Clara, to their studio in Los Gatos, just to VIEW the pictures. Fine, we made an appointment to VIEw the pictures. A Weekday also. We were both really busy that week, already working from 10am till 12am for the 3 weeks, every Monday - Saturday. So the appointment time slipped my mind. Guess what, the lady said in order to make another appointment to VIEW the pictures, we have to pay $25 dollars!!! We were so upset, because we have to pay $25 for missing an appointment. And it's not for a photoshoot, but just to VIEW the pictures?! But we already went through the hassle to have our pictures taken, paid for Groupon, so we still made an appointment so we can view the pictures. At the very least, we have 10 pictures to keep.. or so we thought.. We went in, Jessica showed us the pictures. We went through them, picked up 10 pictures. At the end of the "pick and choose" session, we asked how much it will cost to purchase the digital copies of all of them. She said they DO NOT sell them. We can buy prints from them. She said an 8X10 picture cost $100++. If we want, we can get 5 low resolution pictures printed for $100++. WHAT! ARE YOU KIDDING ME! In addition to that, the 10 picures included in the CD are also LOW resolution. We just pick up the photos, we have to go to the studio to pick them up, else they charge shipping. One print and a cd of 10 images takes 1 month to process... okay, this is ridiculous. Low resolution pictures, 600pixesls by 1000 pixels..with watermark on them. We can't use the pictures at all for our wedding album since it's such low resolution. Seriously, I am truly upset and dissapointed in the way they do their business. This is not the first time we've worked with a professional photographer. We are always able to purchase all our photos and nobody gives out these low res photos to their customers. With watermark on them. NONE. I really want to support their business, but I am sorry, I have to spread the word. I am very sorry a friend of mine bought the Groupon too, and had the same experience as mine. NEVER EVER RECOMMEND THIS PLACE! read more

I"ve known many who have done photos with Ryan. So, I purchased a Groupon. With 3 weeks left on my Groupon, they only had day appts where my husband would have to take off work and we would have to pull my child out of school. When I spoke with Jessica, her attitude is "That's all I have left for Groupons." When I called Groupon, they said that if I scheduled before the expiration date, I should still get the value. However, after Jessica's "tough luck" attitude on the phone, I'm out of luck. My only recourse is to apply it to another sitting where I would pay the high prices of Ryan Willis. Interestingly, some years ago, I paid for a sitting with the Easter special. My Mom was diagnosed with cancer the day before and again, "Tough luck" was the attitude. I had bigger issues at the time so I figured, it was a $ loss. NOW, I know that they did the Groupon to get more regular customers in the future. I've heard from others throughout the community that they are not generous and will charge the highest prices while commiserating about how it is to raise children. Strike 2. Done. This has left a very bad taste in my mouth. Enough to take the time to post my first negative on YELP. BUYER BEWARE. read more

I have better photos of my kids taken by my cell phone! I was lured into this place by his Groupon, and took my twins to get their first birthday pictures. I wanted to get something really nice, splurge a little for a special occasion. I just didn't want them to look like Sears Portraits. Well, they didn't even live up to Sear Portraits! I was going to buy a few, mostly out of pity, to acknowledge that they tried. Then I saw his prices!!! Who does this guy think he is??? The smallest package was $150 and it was for one 8x10 and 2 5x7's. I don't think so! I could get hundreds of portraits this bad at the mall for less than $20! Worst of all, I have no first birthday pics for my twins, because I wasted my time on this terrible photographer. NOT RECOMMENDED! read more

I have been searching for a photographer who is very comfortable with black and white shots. I've had this undying desire to get glamor shots of me and my husband in black & white, reminiscent of the 50s era. When I found this deal on Groupon, I grabbed it! I was a little concerned in the beginning because most of his sample shots on his website were all babies. I studied the black & white photos on his website and they were good so I took a chance! Ryan Willis is an absolute professional. We arrived promptly at 3pm and I discussed what I wanted with him. He understood what I was trying to do. The Groupon deal was for an hour's worth of photography, 10 pix on CD and one 8x10. He must have been very inspired because we got there at 3pm and we didn't finish til 4:30pm or so. But boy oh boy, the pictures came out great. We went there last week for our first viewing and I must say that I think I will file bankruptcy after I pay for all my pictures because I got so carried away. The prints are not cheap. As a matter of fact, they're pretty expensive but I think they're worth it. He totally captured the moment - the lighting, the shadows, expressions on our faces, the set/props and everything else. I can't wait to show off our pictures. I'm also going to order a frame for our 11x14. This is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime thing and I think the quality of his products will last forever. I totally recommend Ryan Willis for any photography. His specialty is B&W and all I can say is that he is the Master & Commander of black and white shots. Nobody else can beat him and I'm willing to bet my life on it:)) read more

Not only is he absolutely amazing with children (you can tell he is an awesome Papa), but his photography is beautiful. Great experience from beginning to end! I bought a Groupon for a holiday sitting for my 11-month-old granddaughter's first Christmas pictures. Nice experience making the appointment, with details of the "deal" sent in follow-up email. Every person I encountered was professional, friendly and knowledgeable. I appreciate the time two people spent during the shoot to be sure we had over 150 terrific pictures from which to choose, and nobody tried to hard-sell me more than the Groupon deal. We've used Sheldon's of Los Altos for 20 years for family pictures, but will use Ryan Willis in the future. Very pleased with the finished pictures, and they were ready earlier than promised. I came here due to a groupon I had purchased. Ryan did my son's newborn photos and I am very happy with them. Ryan is patient, understanding, and definitely knows all the needs one would need to take care of their little ones while taking pictures. He brings a heater in to make the newborns more comfortable while taking their photos, he has a bunch of toys and treats to make toddlers cooperate while taking their pictures or keep busy while taking our pictures. He is stocked with all your needs as far as diapers, wipes, hair spray, bows, a step stool for little ones to wash their hands, etc...I definitely appreciate that! But most of all his pictures are beautiful. I spent a lot of $$$ because I loved so many of photos he took. But you get what you pay for, and I am very happy with them read more

Bottom line with Ryan is that we now have a group of family pictures of 10 of us (including 4 children) that we love. This is not an easy thing to accomplish, particularly since Ryan likes to work when the sun is best - which is close to dinner time. (That plus small children and you can imagine the potential for failure.) He works really, really hard to get good shots, and we were impressed that each group within our family (two sets of four, and one set of two plus four grandchildren) was happy with their own photo and the bigger family photo. At the time, I was worried that his focus on getting the lighting correct meant Ryan lost some candid shots that would have been potentially great, but instead we ended up with more formal shots than we might have wished, but they were really good ones. I smile every time I walk by the photo we have with our 4 little granddaughters, and that ultimately was the goal. The lack of 5 stars is because Ryan's process - getting the photos you've chosen developed and in in your hands - needs work. It was too slow, too awkward having to repeatedly ask for things that should have been taken care of quickly. BUT, again, the photos are great, Ryan and his wife were friendly and helpful with my concerns, and I love the photos. So yes, I recommend him, and yes, I would use him again. (Plus I love that he donated the portrait sitting fee to our grandchildren's elementary school.) read more

I consider myself a pretty serious amateur photographer. I've been taking photos for over 30 years and even had assignments for the Sacramento Bee back in the day. So when it comes to choosing photographers, I have a very high standard and end up rejecting many before deciding on picking one to record my family portrait. I have worked with several photographers in the past, some were okay, some were good, but none were as good as Ryan. From the moment of contacting their office to set up the appointment, going to the shooting session, reviewing the pictures, ordering, receiving the final product - everything was handled very professionally. Expectations were set, the staff was very professional and they delivered on everything they said they would. During the photo shoot Ryan was fantastic to work with. We brought our two boys and right off the bat Ryan had them laughing. He kept their interest while shooting them for 20 minutes. He got them to smile and laugh - not that awkward forced smile, but a genuine smile. Our biggest problems was that when we came back to review the photographs to make the order, there were too many to choose from. It was really difficult finding the best photo because there were so many great ones. We ended up ordering way more than we have wall space for, because there were a few we couldn't say "no" to. We planned to spend a couple hundred dollars on photos of the family, but walked away spending about a thousand - and I was happy to pay it. For those who complain about his price/policy - ask for his pricing up front. If you aren't happy with it then go to JC Penny and get your photos taken there. I found his prices on the high side of average. If you want below average prices, then go find a below average photographer. read more

He was SO amazing with my kids and although I haven't actually seen the pictures yet I am positive that he got some fabulous ones that will go above and beyond my expectations! One thing to realize with Groupons to this place, if they offer you the digital prints they will be LOW RESOLUTION so you will not be able to print them ANYWHERE but from their studio. NOWHERE on my Groupon did it say the images would be LOW RES but when you get paperwork from them (for the Groupon) it is THEN disclosed. I felt it was a type of bait and switch. The images were nice just wish they were not so chintzy with the digital images. I don't usually review on yelp (I think this is my first!) but I don't want people to be misled by Groupons to this studio. read more

Ryan is fantastic with kids. He specializes on maternity and children photos and he is great at it. I first saw his work at Good Samaritan hospital maternity floor. He is very patient with little babies and having kids himself, he knows what kind of tricks to use to get the kids to pose just right. He is kind of pricy.
