They generally have that one part that you need, albeit at a higher price than Fratellone's, it's closer to home, so I was paying for the convenience. Nope. We brought 2 screens in- one for reference for making a dupe and one that was bent. We were told the "person who does screens" could probably bend the one back and replace the corner and not have to be remade. We asked if they could pls call us w a quote before work was started. 3 weeks or so later, I get a call that our TWO screens are ready. TWO? Shouldn't there be 3? I asked for a new one to made from one I brought in. Also-- we NEVER got a call w a quote. I said "shouldn't there be 3?" The guy told me "we can just square up when you get here" - like WHAT? I go in, find that the screen I want duped is rescreened, unnecessarily. To top it off? The other was still bent! After much run around- I let them know I would not be paying for the rescreen of the one that we didn't ask for. They were fine w that. The other, I was *assured* would "straighten out" when we pop it in. We trust the guy and try to pop the screen in. It broke w how much maneuvering we had to do since it was bent. So now I'm out money AND screens. I called and asked to speak w a mgr 5 days ago and still have not heard back. Listen, Tlove supporting small businesses but this was a major fail on their end. S&S hardware is a great neighborhood hardware store. One of the best part about shopping here is that you won't have a million people pushing their carts over you similar to some other larger hardware stores. It will also not take you a lot of time to search for someone to help you out to locate an item, the staff is very accessible and helpful with any questions Prices are more than reasonable. A major plus is that it is a 5 minute walk from my house so I don't really have to drive to get smaller items but for people driving to this place, there is plenty of on-street parking. I highly recommend others to buy your birthday and house warming gifts from here because not only you will be buying a practical gift but also you shall reap the pleasure of supporting a small local business. ;-) read more

While I appreciate the convenience of a neighborhood hardware store and would generally prefer supporting one over a mega chain like Menards or Home Depot, I just didn't have a great experience at S&S. Bought a snow shovel and a regular shovel last winter after moving into the neighborhood. The prices seemed expensive but didn't think much of it at the time. Turned out the house I moved into already had a shovel. Whoops! I tried to taking back the newly purchased one the next day, completely unused, and the guy behind the counter wouldn't allow it. He pointed to a small sign behind the counter that said no refunds. Well, actually, first the dude looked it over for evidence of wear and tear, as if he didn't believe it was unused, and then he told me no refunds. Why don't you just come out and call me a liar next time, guy? I pushed back respectfully and he told me I was welcome to take it up with his manager ... Who wouldn't be in for a couple more days. Nope. Life is too short. So, now I have two shovels! The snow shovel I bought there eventually broke, by the way, (probably from my own misuse, not blaming that on S&S). When I got a replacement at Menards I wound up getting a better one for about 40% less than I paid at S&S. Oh well. I don't mind overpaying a little to patronize a friendly neighborhood business, but this one wasn't so friendly so I doubt I will be back. (Still giving 2 stars because maybe it was just one bad employee having one bad day.) read more

I want to say Thank YOU to the young man who works here, name is Joe. He went WAY out of his to help me when I was lost and falling into a diabetic-downfall. The young guy gives me hope in the humanity of the next generation of leaders. I didn't have to go into this store to buy anything; I just needed immediate help. And he may have lost his job because he really did go way out of his way to help me. The other fellow behind the counter, an elderly gentleman, was not too enthusiastic about letting Joe help me. When Menards and Home Depot's overwhelming floor plans, displays of impulse buys and paucity of assistance seem to be the norm, my neighborhood hardware store is a beacon in the darkness of a home improvement project. Without as much as walking through the doorway of this place, I am met with eye contact and a smile (try getting that at your big box!). "What can I help you with?" I am out of the store within 3 minutes with exactly what I need and with nothing that I don't need. YESSSSS! Thank you to the supermen and superwomen at S &S! Although it's nice to have a local hardware store accessible relatively close to home, it's very disappointing that they do such a horrible job of sharpening a lawnmower blade. When we dropped off the blade on a recent Saturday after finding Gregie's Small Engine Repair & Welding shop had closed a short time before we arrived, "the guy" at S & S bragged that the blade would be sharp enough to shave with. What an understatement that was. I returned the following Tuesday to pick up the blade and when I commented on the appearance of the job they had done, "the guy" rather defensively told me that it was most certainly sharp - he guaranteed it. He also assured me that the blade was "balanced". When I showed the newly sharpened blade to my SO, he gasped and laughed. He applied the freshly sharpened edge to the back of his hand and arm and "sawed" back and forth. Nothing. No cut. He recommended we go to his local hardware store (River Lake Hardware) in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis where he's gone for years for such things and they'd do the job right. Meanwhile, I returned to S & S the following day with the blade in hand to ask for my $8 back because of their poor quality job. When "the guy" got to the counter to help me, he listened to my brief complaint, took the blade from my hand and with extended arm waved it behind himself to the other younger store employee standing behind him, saying (tauntingly) "Does THIS look sharp to you"? Well, "the guy" begrudgingly refunded my $8 and challenged me to find someplace that would sharpen the blade better. He even asked that I have that place call him to explain how they sharpen blades, because he'd like to know. I thanked him for returning my money. I received no acknowledgement, no reply whatsoever. Aside from the music playing, I walked quietly out the door. I brought my blade to River Lake Hardware in Mpls. this past Friday evening. I refrain from sharing all the details of my interaction with them, except to say that they were quite surprised at the poor quality of the service performed. They said they would do their best to correct the issues and likely charge $7 or $8 to do so. They advised they'd have the blade done by Tuesday. Made me wonder: what's with this "be ready on Tuesday" thing? We picked up blade Tuesday evening. River Lake Hardware said "no charge for the job; we had to do a lot to straighten the blade edge and it may or may not work in your mower; hopefully, it'll be good enough to take you through this mowing season, but you may just have to buy a new blade in the next year or two". And also, they advised that when they began working on my blade, it was not "balanced". The blade looked great and we installed it on my mower and took a few trial swipes over the grass - it cuts beautifully. Best advice: drive across the Marshall Ave/Lake St. bridge into Minneapolis and have your lawn mower blade sharpened correctly at River Lake Hardware. They may become your "new" local hardware store for all your hardware store needs. read more

I love this hardware store! Everything you need, nothing you don't. The folks who work here are super helpful, honest, and just great people. I've been here for everything from matching a few bolts that got lost in a move, to getting keys copied, to renting a tiller to prep my lawn for gardening. It's not like going to a big box store with an overwhelming number of choices and no one to help you. The folks at S&S take pride in their work and serving their community. Other places that are near by, I would recommend Frattallone's, have a better selection of items of higher quality and better prices with policies that aren't terrible unlike this place. I have had to bring back items that broke soon after buying them, and they did a terrible job sharpening my lawn mower blade. Save yourself the money, time, and grief and just go somewhere else. The manager has been very impatient and rude showing no care for whether or not his items are worth anything. read more

This place is really nice to have down the block. Everyone is very friendly and helpful and one time I forgot my credit card and the man chased me down outside to return it. They also have very yummy caramels at the register that I enjoy stopping in for from time to tome. read more

Although they aren't as big as some hardware stores, they are super helpful and have all the basics. In addition, I shopped around to rent something (a sod roller) and after getting quotes from others of $13 for 4 hours or $19 for all day, I found out that S&S rented them for only $4 a day!!!!! They earned themselves a faithful customer in the process. read more

The prices are way too high compared to anywhere else you could go. The best place to go would be to the Ace on Grand or to a Menards/Home Depot because they let you return items and have better variety and prices. read more
