So when the future in-laws got themselves a lake home nearby, on to the interweb's I went. Like it's been said, parking is easy. There's usually a food truck hanging out and vendors are selling things that are local to the area besides the usual produce (sauces, jam's, syrups, baked goods, mustards, etc). For example, I'm a condiment junkie. This year, Fluffy David's had a booth (they're on the Book of Face) and I picked up some sauces and relish. The photo below is a hot sauce of called Garlic Scape. Totally a seasonal thing and the relish and mustard I had were tasty. Also new this year was Steeped(I believe they are on the Insta). They basically have all these ingredients that are in a jar and you just add your booze or club soda or whatever, then let it sit in the fridge for a few days so it can do it's thing. Many flavors available. Anyway, it's smaller in the grand scheme of things but like they say, big things come in small packages.

This farmers' market has easy parking (on street or the parking lot of Glen's Army Navy). Prices…read moreare different than we paid in the Twin Cities- but my guess is that it's more challenging to grow food up here, and there are obviously far fewer growers! $4 for a small tray of green beans in the middle of August seems steep, but we've just moved into the area. With that said, they were delicious and we've bought them (for the same price) several weeks in a row now. Bakery goods are very inexpensive- $4 for a full loaf of homemade bread and you can get a huge whoopie pie for $1. There's a brat guy with lots of different meats and beautiful flowers. There's a very skilled carpenter/woodscraftsman, Fideldy's maple syrup, honey, and berries, and you can meet the maker of heretical lefse. It's worth a look, and worth the prices, I'm sure.

Sarah H. went out of her way to spoil us rotten. SERVICE SCORE -- 10+ The boss ordered the jumbo shrimp (the oxymoron still makes me laugh) and she found them to be satisfactory but not quite stellar. I went with the prime rib and got exactly the cut I asked Sarah to describe to the chef and it was done to a perfect medium rare. For my side, I chose the shrimp bisque and had I known how great that was going to be, I'd have skipped the steak and just ordered a bottomless bowl of the bisque ... YES, it was that good!!! FOOD SCORE -- 4 of 5. But, let's talk about the elephant in the room ... every soul in the house was shouting over the other dozen people at their respective tables... the noise level on a Saturday during the evening rush made me wish I had known to bring earplugs or noise-canceling headphones. The noise level might have been partially attributable to the very generous pour that every glass seemed to have. AMBIENCE SCORE -- Ungraded. All in, though, we had a decent meal at a fair price and got top-shelf service from Sarah (the highlight of the visit.) If we were ever in town visiting again, we'd go back.

For us, it was busy but the service was fast and very friendly. The beer selection focuses on microbrewery's, which I prefer. I selected a German blonde beer from Bemidji. For my meal I did the walleye sandwich. It was breaded & deep fried walleye on a hoagie bun with tomato's, lettuce, red onions and tartar sauce. It was big and it hit the spot! My SO had the walleye filet and shrimp bisque. She said the bisque was the star of the show. The view over the lake makes this a special place. The loud noise from other tables detracts somewhat from that experience.

We were just looking for a few things like bagels and some snacks. I asked for help in locating bagels and two women in the bakery were super helpful. Very nice and friendly. Their shelves…read moreare getting dirtier by the day as more and more expired food pile up on the shelves, their staff are becoming more and more rude and unhelpful and It's all due to the fact that there is virtually no competition. it's basically a monopoly. Unless you pay for your cart and bag and Aldi's, your basically stuck at Super One Foods. And their business practices are shady at best. For instance: the assistant manager at the Super One Foods in Deer River was fired for being "inappropriate" (for the lack of a better word) with the female employee's. This occurred everywhere when the store closed, including but not limited to: the tables of the produce room in the back, the meat room, the main office, the break room, and much more. If you are wondering how I know this, let's just say I was an insider for a while.
