Seriously, walking in I suddenly felt like I was transported to the food shops I used to go to with my mom back in the 1970s as a kid in small-town Quebec. With Montreal Canadians and vintage Quebecois memorabilia, it's really not hard to imagine what a real Mom and Pop stores on Main Street used to look like before giant supermarkets and mega stores drove them out of business. This place has absolutely everything to address your poultry needs and then some. The chickens are all grain-fed and sourced locally in Quebec. I haven't tried the sausages yet but they sure looked tempting. You'll get the same quality of meat here as you would as more expensive locations at Atwater Market or Jean Talon Market - minus the insane markups. I'm glad Verdun still has many shops like these.

My favourite thing to get from here is the bambi (cerf) sausages - I can't recommend them enough! They have a wide selection of home-made sausages, and all the ones I've tried have been great. The chicken they sell is grain feed and from Quebec, so it's the good stuff. They also have a selection of cheeses and pates, which are nice to round-out a meal. Another thing I like to go there for is their marinated steaks, all of which are good (my favourite is the spicey one). They also have minced horse meat, which is great for burgers. It's still a little small - there are ALWAYS people in there, but you'll be happy you went. The butcher shop in the back has AMAZING meat, the fresh produce is great, the baked goods are beautiful. I've lived in the USA and in Vancouver now for so many years, I'm sorry if my French isn't great, but I'm trying. If I'm a paying customer at a store and I'm trying, but you don't understand me, it'd be common courtesy - not to mention good business sense - for you to get a fellow employee who DOES understand English. This interaction reminded me of past experiences here when the cashier was aloof (at best). Maybe the employees are like this with ALL English-speaking customers? I don't know. For me, though, I see a pattern. If you are visiting from out of town, and/or if you don't speak French well, I think I'd advise you to skip this store, despite the wonderful gourmet foods they have here. On the beer side of the situation, the Fromagerie Atwater is in the top 3 for the city (the others being Peluso an Epicerie au Coin Duluth). The staff here is uniquely excellent and thats why, for bottle shops, it is really a two way fight between Peluso and Fromagerie. Last night I posted a question of the facebook page asking a question about a beer. Someone responded in FOUR FREAKING MINUTES. I am very, very grateful the bottle they kindly set aside for me. As usual in this region the treats are meat and dairy heavy but I like the Shawbridge beers so grabbed some of those, a vegan local Piri Piri sauce that I'm excited to try and then, at the counter, some vegan fruit candies that are actually so good. They are carrying a new type of raw bar called a Roo Bar and selling them individually the same price the company sells them buy the box (you're getting a bulk rate for individual bars!). The staff are also super nice and there is always a new product to explore and enjoy :)
