So this place was pretty cool, but really didn't have what I was looking for. If you have a lot of…read morespace for furniture, are doing a big home project, or are into furniture refurb, I would definitely recommend Second Chance. Unfortunately I don't fit into any of those categories. Also, it's annoying there are so many faux plants in there and none are for sale. What's the point?

This dude was so instantly nasty to me, dismissive, condescending, just awful. I literally don't even know what I did wrong but try and buy a stack of books and try to get a discount cos I was buying a whole stack! Never ever before met a rude person here in the twenty years I've been coming (since before ravens stadium was built and they were across the street). I've bought thousands of dollars worth of appliances here (2 $500 stoves, a $1000 fridge, two dishwashers, and two washers and dryers), not to mention hundreds upon hundreds worth of lumber, trim, windows, doors, miscellaneous hardware, etc. I bought 400 dollars worth of upholstery cloth one time alone. I come in, I don't mess around, I know what I need and I am a friendly nice customer. (Because they use your phone number when you buy, also? they should be able to SEE this). I was buying BOOKS. Books are not their main business (and to be honest their prices are so out of scale it's crazy compared to thrifts--10 dollars each for a used hard over cover book from the 80s? I think there was one vintage item or two--I collect golden book kids encyclopedias) In the past they've basically tried to GIVE me books I wanted to buy! I wasn't buying anything from the "special glass cases. I asked Josh what they could do for me on these 20 books that I promise no one wants. (I promise). I picked up so many cos I have always been given a little break on stuff here! It's literally the way I thought they do business!!!! Nope. Not a single red cent. Off ANY book EXCEPT one they wanted 20 dollars for that didn't cost 20 new! (No it was not old or vintage!) I had 100 bucks of books in my cart he couldn't do 80? He wouldn't even discuss it and when I was frankly totally taken aback by this since it's so counter to EVERY EXPERIENCE IVE HAD THERE FOR OVER 20 YEARS--he threatened to call security on me!? For trying to bargain?????? These were all crap books. I want them for myself and to show my husband AND I make art from them. I'd have paid literally 10 for every set of four of these books at thrift. They wanted 10 and 15 dollars EACH. It wasn't just he wouldn't deal at all on price. He treated me like a criminal for no reason at all. He had his hand on his walkie talkie and when I kind of laughed just thinking he was driving a bargain he said he was going to call security on me!!!! He did this because I had the temerity to say "come on, not any discount at all? I'm buying in bulk!" And I mentioned I've never had them not come down on price on anything ever! I am a short, friendly 53 year old mom. fyi. What the living heck is going on with this place? It was SUCH an unpleasant and weird experience. I feel horrible. I will take my business to loading dock.

Over a year ago, I tried to donate my car to vehicles for change. I was expecting a tow truck to arrive at my house before work on a weekday, but no one came in the time window that was specified to me. The driver did call to say he was on his way, but only after the specified time window had passed, and after I had already left for work. So the tow truck driver said he would come at a different date and time. Of course, no one came at the newly scheduled time either, and the coordinator whom I'd been in contact with had had no idea about the newly scheduled pick up. I guess the tow truck driver didn't really have the authority and/or ability to commit to pick up times. I tried to convince my husband to hand over the car title during a more generous time window on a THIRD scheduled date, but he wasn't willing to deal with an organization that had already botched the pick-up twice, and I don't generally have enough weekday at-home ability to do it myself, so I gave up and found another organization to donate to. Of course they just started sending me their newsletter. Thanks for the reminder. I get it, I've worked at a public-facing nonprofit, and it's tough to organize well, so I hope they've improved since my experience, but I wouldn't recommend them to someone I knew.

I only happened to come across this business while surfing the MVA website looking for a place to donate my car. Here's where the business falls short and is hurting themselves: COMMUNICATION. On a Monday, I called to find out about the company and ask a few questions regarding the process for donation and what needed to be done with the MVA. I hit a brickwall with the receptionist and found that off-putting because as the general public's first point of contact, you should be the first tier of knowledge for everything related to the business. Clueless receptionist then forwarded me to the voicemail of the administrator in charge of donations. One day, two day, infinity days go by, never heard from her at all. I called back two days later on Wednesday and this happened to speak with a woman who's name I can't recall (Valerie or Vicky perhaps?) who not only was a pleasure to speak with but told me all about the history of the organization and what it does for the community. She even provided me with the Facebook page and invited me to a grand opening of a new location so that I could see more of what VFC was about. Now THIS is the type of person that should be handling the calls! The helpful woman then put me in touch with Bill who was the towing coordinator. While Bill was a pleasure to speak with, it seemed like there was a communication gap between him and his towing team because on the scheduled day of tow, I never received a call when the tow men were coming to get the car and when they did call it was 2 minutes before the department closed and I had already left work. When I returned the missed call from them within 15 minutes they'd advised me it was too late to get my car (which I'm not sure why that was because they'd never gotten the address from me so it wasn't like they were in my area and had already left). I'll also state that I initially reached out to the company via their website to acquire more information. It wasn't until a full week and a half had went by and I had already dealt with everyone that I received responses to my email inquiry. My word of advice to VFC: While it is great that you may be so busy with donations for needy families that it becomes difficulty to maintain communication, understand that each missed opportunity to provide follow-up is a lost car for another family member. I strongly suggest manning your office with more staff. As a non-profit I'm sure you can hire some high schoolers that need service hours (translation FREE LABOR). Because of the gap in communication with your company and my short window to get rid of the vehicle to terminate the insurance premiums, I wound up donating the car to another cause.

My first rating was 3 stars; but given that I spent over $100 (not including the 25% off I got because it was a Thursday) and look forward to going back, I think 4 is fairer. New digs, so I need new furnishings. Decided to thrift shop for home decor and essentials before paying for new. Scored some really great deals! Like an ironing board for $5.99. Billy Squire greatest hits CD for $1.99. (No judgement!) Lots of baskets and containers for storage, new lampshades, a looks-like-new baking pan, and a bunch of other similar items. There are rows and rows and rows of household items, grouped by a top category (such as kitchen appliances), then subcategory (such as coffee makers. Bedding, then King sheets. Furniture, lamps. Etc. You get the idea.) Then there are categories for Wood Decor, Plastic, Metal, etc. Rows and rows of clothing are similarity grouped: Jeans, grouped by size. Shoes, books, purses, toys... everything. This makes it so much easier to find what you are looking for than at places that group by color. (What "color" does butter dish fall under??) Loved all that. Didn't like: 1) No fitting rooms. I wasn't shopping for clothing, but if I had been... I don't buy any garments without first trying them on. Covid, perhaps, but still... 2) To use the bathroom, you have to first find an associate to unlock the door. When a person was trying on a cart full of clothes in the bathroom, the associate said he is "not getting involved with that." Um... can you at least call for a manager, then? 3) Finally, there were 4-6 Self-checkout stalls and no wait. Literally, no one was checking themselves out. Great! I love checking myself out so I can take my time, ensure the correct price, and review whether I really want to buy something. So I begin. Then I hear a bellow (really, a bellow) from the lone cashier telling me, "You can't check out there! I need to check you out." I look around--is she talking to me? She was. I gather all the stuff I'd already rung up and get in the long line for the only cashier. At some point, a new cashier took over so I asked the original cashier--very politely--why I couldn't self-check. Because I had too much stuff, she said. Ok, I get that... but maybe there should be a sign? Maybe you could be less militant about it? As I'm in line, I see a guy try to ring up a guitar at the self checkout. Now there is an employee there who tells him he can't, he has to get in line for the cashier, too. He looks as annoyed as I. Finally it's my turn. I have a cart full. I feel bad because there's now a line of people behind me. No time to ruminate about my purchases or check prices. The new cashier is no friendlier than the original. She also seems annoyed. Maybe because she sees a line of people for her, while the self checkout lanes are empty. I don't get it. Seriously, I'm baffled. But I did get a nice head start on home decorating, so there's that.

Fiddling around a natural creek is a formative experience * A selection of beautiful older trees that survived from colonial times * Including a massive ancient white oak, Maryland's state tree and quite rare now. If you've never seen a "big tree" in person this is a must-see. It has presence. * Restored buildings and history displays * A resident ambassador owl. Go closer to dusk to see him active * Restored natural meadows (great macro photography) * Examples of bee keeping, different types of gardening, etc. Lots to play / do / learn, or for us older folks, walking around and taking photos. A couple of notes: * hours on maps are for the venue, the grounds are actually open dawn-to-dusk * the hiking is pretty mild but there's a lot to see. * alltrails isn't accurate for many of the paths, but everything is really well signed (or grab the map from their own website) * if you're doing the full circuit of trails, wear those ankle-support shoes/boots - it might seem silly for the easy terrain, but the angle of the farm trails is "hard" in sneakers, and you'll appreciate that support. Enjoy it! Another Howard County gem.

We got off to a bad start because Dogs Finding Dogs said we couldn't go on anyone's property without permission, so I had to run around knocking on doors. We spent a lot of time looking in a field with no luck. We then started back at our house and I am pretty sure the dog tracked a different dog because we went west and our dog was found was 4 miles south of us. Please do not spend your money unless you are willing to waste it. I feel like I threw away $400. The person and their dog were wonderful, just not helpful. We had to stop after about 4 hours because it was too hot and the poor dog was whooped! I was really hoping that our dog would be found that day. You hear this all the time, but really the best thing to do is to plaster flyers everywhere, post it online everywhere and wait for someone to see your pet. Someone finally contacted me through a website that they thought our dog was in their back yard. Also, there was a wonderful woman in our area who helps people find their lost pets. She was able to help me and trap our sweet girl after being lost for 11 days. (And didn't charge me. I did give her a donation though.) I would not recommend Dogs Finding Dogs unless you have the extra time and money.
