Sometimes the best discoveries come from plans that fall apart…read more Our Houston trip unexpectedly evaporated, and rather than sit around frustrated, we decided to head north and see where the road took us. That decision paid off when we ended up at El Patio in Zwolle. The restaurant was a nice surprise. The decor had a festive Mexican feel with colorful streamers, flags, and bright colors. Everything was neatly painted, clean, and cool, which was a welcome retreat from the oppressive summer heat outside. We arrived in the early afternoon, so we missed whatever lunch crowd might have been there. The first thing they bring out is a basket of hot tortilla chips. They were fresh and tasted like they had just come out of the fryer. They offer guacamole and other extras, but don't overlook the homemade salsa. It's cooked, served chilled, not too spicy, and not overloaded with cilantro. Really good. The pineapple margaritas were another highlight. They came in heavy crockery mugs that kept them ice cold. They were so good we bought a pair of the mugs to take home as souvenirs from our little road trip. The funny thing is, after the hour drive home, those mugs were still cool to the touch. They really hold the cold. We both ordered the Speedy Gonzalez. The enchilada came covered in a rich mole-based chili sauce, and the plate included a hard-shell taco plus your choice of rice or beans. We chose both. The refried beans were flavorful, the Spanish rice was light and fluffy, and the taco was excellent. The beef was just a little salty for our taste, but the Monterey Jack cheese was a nice touch and everything came together well. We finished with sopapillas, which came out hot, covered with cinnamon and sugar, with honey on the side. They were delicious. Our only disappointment? No coffee. Those warm sopapillas were begging for a cup of coffee afterward. That's a small complaint, though. Great service, great chips, homemade salsa, excellent margaritas, good food, and even a souvenir to remember the trip by. El Patio turned an unexpected change of plans into a very enjoyable afternoon.

Service was good, a delay on getting the check. Understandable considering other patrons showed up after we were there. Had an authentic Mexican vibe. Day of the Dead was just a few days before. Pretty good experience for me. I would def go back.

The primary issue was the food quality. My brother and I got separate orders of mixed Fajitas. The shrimp turned out fine, good in fact, but the chicken was dry and overcooked and the beef was somehow worse. The beef fajitas specifically charred and inedible. The portion size for the price you pay was a tad high. Mixed Fajitas (chicken and beef) for one at other restaurants give you more than two slices of each meat. The fajita plate doesn't include cheese or sour cream; if you enjoy that it's extra. Just before the food came out, a sopping wet ceiling tile and blown-in insulation fell from the ceiling. Pieces of insulation made it into nearby tables (including ours) and into drinks. The mess was quickly resolved. Mess cleaned up. Drinks replaced. Tables wiped down. But the AC had to be turned off because the line continued to leak over the bar. This was an accident and doesn't reflect poorly on the service, but it added to the overall first impression being less than ideal. There were several miscommunications with the waiter. He got two of our orders wrong. The manager had to come over and solve one because he didn't understand the request to substitute yellow American cheese for white Monterey Jack cheese. The manager resolved this and the enchiladas were very good after it was corrected. My SIL ordered a queso flameado with chicken, but the waiter brought out one with beef instead. The beef on this dish was also incredibly dry and inedible.. Even after pointing out the mistake and fixing it with the correct order the waiter charged for the beef. Upon trying to get the bill corrected, the waiter didn't give the correct cash back and the Host had to resolve the issue. Overall impression: not a place I'll return to anytime soon.

The margarita flight was ehh, very syrupy but the dragon fruit Rita was so good! I got the Tortuga Plate which was a fried avocado stuffed with steak and WOW pretty good! Overall I'd come back for the food, I just wish the service was better.
