After hitting the ball more times than I want to admit too at Apple Valley Golf Course we decided…read moreto drive down the mountain to Lake Lure to celebrate or for some to drown their sorrows and have a few cocktails and beers at El Lago. This is a spacious restaurant but unfortunately there were very few customers today so we were able to grab a seat at the small bar in the back of the restaurant straight away from the entrance they also have a large patio for outdoor seating. The staff here was very friendly and eager to grant our every wish, the draft beers are large and cold and lucky for me they serve Dos Equis Amber on draft which is one of my favorites to start before switching over to a top shelf Margarita (Don Julio) which are the same price as the house margaritas $16.50. The staff set us up with warm tortillas and salsa and introduced us to the "salsa bar" which had a number of different salsas and with different levels of heat so pick your poison and chase it with the drink of your choice. The restaurant appeared clean but although they weren't busy there were still bus bins filled with dirty dishes sitting around which I thought was odd. All in all we had a great experiences the pours were generous but it's not cheap. We decided not to eat here and our tap was still well over one hundred dollars without gratitude for the four of us - it's definitely a place I'd returned to for the margaritas...

Service was slow and the waitress seemed disinterested in our table. The restaurant was very grimy and the bathrooms were unpleasant. I would go if I was really craving Mexican food but it wasn't a great experience.

Tucked away in Hendersonville, this unassuming spot serves food so comforting it feels like being hugged by a Salvadoran grandmother you didn't know you had. The pupusas arrive hot off the griddle, stuffed to the point of structural engineering concern, with cheese performing gravity-defying feats every time you pull one apart. The curtido deserves its own publicist. Tangy, crunchy, and bright, it cuts through the richness with the precision of a Michelin-starred surgeon. One bite and suddenly you're convinced cabbage is the most underrated vegetable on Earth. For those that do not know what curtido is, well, think of it as the love child of coleslaw and sauerkraut, but with far more personality (a Latin personality). Made from finely shredded cabbage, carrots, onions, and oregano, it's lightly fermented in vinegar and salt until it develops a bright, tangy zing that wakes up your taste buds like a double espresso. The atmosphere is casual, welcoming, with a few park benches right in front of the ordering window, and plenty of coverage from the elements. Nobody is trying to reinvent food here. They're too busy making it delicious, just like that Salvadorean grandma used to make it. By the end of the meal, literally 5 hours later and back in Atlanta, my friend and I were like: " We should have brought a cooler and filled it up with pupusas and brought them home." Next time. I guarantee you that if Claritas were located in Brooklyn, people would wait two hours in line and pay triple the price. Fortunately for the rest of us, it's in Hendersonville serving extraordinary food without any of the nonsense. Come hungry. Leave happy. Consider wearing stretchy pants.

For just $29 we got: * Two birria pupusas (must try) * One Salvadoran tamale (weekends only) * Two al pastor tacos * One tamarindo agua fresca How they price it so low, we'll never know. But wow. The man at the window is incredibly kind, speaks English, and makes sure you get exactly what you want. They serve three salsas at the table, have plenty of pupusa choices, and several tacos. Cannot recommend the birria pupusa enough. Cash, check, or Zelle only (no credit cards). Closed Tuesdays. Open until 8 PM. Definitely worth a visit.
