Visited Sabor Tropical Restaurant recently for dinner on a Sunday evening. We were immediately greeted and seated. The restaurant itself was impeccably clean and welcoming. I started out my experience with their Pisco Sour. I prefer the Peruvian style Pisco Sour (with egg whites and bitters), they serve it in the Chilean fashion (sans egg whites and bitters). It was aok if that's the style you prefer! For our starter, we got the tostones rellenos, which were the star of the evening for me. So flavorful with just the right amount of heat. Perfection! For my main dish, I got their salmon tropical, which is grilled salmon over whipped potatoes with cilantro, mango, onion, and avocado on top. It's also served with asparagus, which was pitch perfect. All in all--it was a fresh and tasty dish! For dessert, my dining companion and I opted to share their nutella flan. I found it to be overly, cloyingly sweet and wouldn't likely order dessert here again. The service was attentive and the prices were reasonable. Get to it! read more

This was restaurant of the week and a good choice. Street parking is as good as it gets but after driving around the block a couple times a spot opened up. The place has outdoor seating in front and the inside has a nice bar with big front windows and tables/chairs. The bar menu for a tropical restaurant had a small tropical drink menu I thought but the strawberry mojito sounded good. The strawberry mojito was good but for all I know it was a kiddie cocktail because it didn't taste like an adult beverage because it didn't taste like an alcohol beverage. The blond woman with the hypnotic/beautiful accent working the whole room by herself did a great job. The menu has so much good stuff on it that it's hard to pick a dish so I opted for the Latin inspired signature sampler which is empanada choice of meat, steak quesadilla, tostone ralleno pork, three mango bbq wings and tostones. The food took a bit to hit the table but it looked good when it did. Everything was delicious/flavorful and seasoned nicely. I enjoyed everything on the plate so it's hard to pick one over the other except the wing's because wings are everywhere. The pork was moist and seasoned nicely as well as the tender steak quesadilla, it's all very good. Overall I really like my lunch and I'm so glad that I stopped for something different and they did a great job. read more

Yesterday our late lunch -- after 2:00 PM -- gave us a chance to catch up over amazing food and with exceptional service. Yaime suggested a couple items for our party and took care to ask about options available to us. I always chuckle when she asks if I want the Aguagate Relleno with pork and a side of tomatillo sauce--she knows I do. Today, three of our four entrees came out together. After apologizing for the delay of the fourth, Yamie showed her attentiveness by refreshing our drinks. I could not think of a better late lunch. read more

Went here for the first time with coworkers, the food was very good! We shared the mango bbq and jerk wings- the magi bbq was my personal favorite of the two. We stopped here on a Sunday evening. We had never been here before. The atmosphere was lovely. I felt like I was in San Juan. I ordered the "Gambas" which was really tasty - shrimp in a butter sauce, mashed potatoes in the middle and crisp-tender broccoli. I loved every bite! We had the empanadas as well. They were pretty big and deep fried and stuffed with lots of meat. The pastry held up and had a decent flavor. They had some unique things on the menu, good for a change of pace. I visited today on a beautiful Friday afternoon after peak lunch time hours and was happy to see they were open and not crowded. I was greeted at the door by the owner Jesse Fonseca, who said his business had been here for six years. It was nice to hear some Romeo Santos and other good music while eating. I had a wonderful cup of the Pozole Soup and was amazed by the quality of the soup with actual real fresh chicken meat that was shredded and not cubed or processed. For my lunch I had the Pernil with Gandules and the portion of the food for the price was excellent. I'm generally a big eater but needed to ask for a box. My wife is from the Dominican Republic and I get spoiled with great food. I'll definitely be bringing her here for not just the food but for the Bachata music and dancing they have on weekend nights. read more

On a cold blizzardy new years day, with our first choice of restaurant closed, a friend and I ambled across a snowy KK towards the beckoning open sign in sabors window. The menu & the vibrant decor, Latin American (cuban, Puerto Rican) Although a complete contrast to what was going on outside were welcome and inviting. The menu was huge! It was hard to make up my mind but I had what sounded pretty standard - a grilled chicken breast. You got to choose your side and topping though, so I chose the mango-avocado-corn topping which was excellent. They had alot of interesting sides (different rices, etc) but I went with the Mofongo. If you've not had this garlicky, delicious ball of mashed plantain goodness this would be a great introduction. My friend had the ropa Vieja and declared it excellent. We both had extra to take with us. We noticed people coming in for take out. There was so much on the menu id love to come back and try more. The food was great as usual. I've been coming here since 2019, this has been my number one spot for the best margaritas and mojitos. Recently due to some staff changes it seems the quality of the drinks has gone completely down. There's no consistency and the drinks are absolutely hot garbage, the margarita on the rocks tasted like 1800 with 1/4 oz of lime and water. It just sucks. We went here for dinner and drinks. The drinks were fantastic. I had a mojito that was done very well, not too sweet and then had a margarita that tasted like it had fresh mango juice in it instead of thick sweetners. I ordered the aguacate relleno with steak which was good but I would have called the meat ground beef. My husband ordered the grouper mofongo and when it came they apologized that they didn't have lobster so it was fish and they charged us for fish, which was confusing because fish is what he ordered. The staff was very nice and the waitress was helpful with suggestions. The restaurants a little darker from the outside but the walls are brightly colored with murals and artwork around so it doesn't feel too dark inside. Was in Puerto Rico a few years ago. I have discovered this delicious dish called mofongo and gorged on it so much that I got vexed with it after a few days. I didn't even want to see it again. It has been a few years since then, wanted to get reacquainted with the deep fried plantains dish, so ordered mofongo from this place. They have a large variety of flavored mojitos that are unique so grab one and take an outside table. I had the Aguacate Relleno with the steak - other person had the pulled pork but the steak was definitely the winner. The steak was seasoned perfectly and was tender. I absolutely loved the manposteao rice and was my first time with the delicious treat, Others had the wings, quesadillas and there no complaints. I was sad that Riviera Maya moved out of this space but I like what they did with it. Everything at this restaurant was mouth-wateringly delicious. I came for the tostones but I'll be back for.. well, everything. We came with friends visiting from the Dominican Republic and they also thoroughly enjoyed everything so I can say that the food is authentic. I especially loved the plantain chips and salsa they brought for the table, and the passion fruit juice! Food: Jibarito Sandwich. I love all things plantain. This was excellent. Not dry, not too greasy. And the portion was huge! I only finished half. You have to get the Tostones Rellenos for appetizers (get two orders, trust me you will eat them all). When they're up to full staff this could easily be a 5 star experience, until then if you are not in the mood for a VWRY leisurely experience I wouldn't recommend eating here as they were short staffed everywhere. That being said the drinks were delicious (passion fruit mojitos) and only $5 during happy hour. The mango bbq appetizer was fantastic and the dinners were amazing - we had a pork dish and a grouper dish. Shout out to Carolina our bartender and server. Dios mio, this place is amazing! I am a sucker for authentic Latin American food. Sure, I attempt to make it at least weekly, but is it the same? Not in the least. Where do I begin? We were so excited to try out this new Latin American gem and the food was amazing. The ambience was informal and lively. There are amazing painting on the walls representing the beautiful Latin American culture which truly make you feel part of the culture. One the day we visited, they had an unexpected group of more than 20 so we had to wait about 30 mins even though we had reservations due to their backed up kitchen. We eventually got seated and the server was extremely polite and apologetic about the wait which we truly appreciated. We started with some amazing Mojitos while we waited and when we did get to ordering, there were so many great options, it was super tough to pick one.. so I guess if you did visit with a group.. you can try multiple options if you didn't mind sharing. Anyway, we ordered the mofongo with chicken, the shredded slow cooked pork and the grouper. I think the mofongo and the pork were super amazing and the sauce of the grouper was nice but the grouper itself was ok. I would try the salmon next time because it looked amazing. I highly recommend getting the mofongo (chicken/shrimp/fish) which is essentially meat and mashed potatoes with garlic and really delicious! I have to admit I have never been into the physical restaurant but Sabor Tropical is one of our all time favorites for delivery/take out. It has such a great mixture of Caribbean options! We love the Ropa Vieja, Cubano, Empanadillas, ceviche, and recently I tried the Pernil Al Horno En Salsa De Chile Guajillo. The ropa vieja is very tender and flavorful. The cubano is great and the fries are a great side. The pernil is described as sweet heat, I disagree on the heat but it's still flavorful and I would order it again. Sabor Tropical is a great option for a filling meal, quick bite, or for sharing a meal with a friend when you disagree on what you want to eat. There's something for everyone on their menu and you will leave happy! read more

The salmon was cooked and seasoned to perfection, flakey and moist, along with the grilled Asparagus. Topped with Mango, Avocado, and bits of tomato. Absolutely a horrendous experience. We walked in at 7pm with a reservation and were sat immediately. We were greeted about 30 minutes later and were given one water and a drink menu 35 mins in. We put our order in at 7:35. Exactly an hour in we still had one water to share. I had ordered a soup before the meal and got that at exactly 8:45. We finally got our food at 9pm and my medium rare steak was grey and fully cooked and the mashed potatoes on my partners dish were tough from sitting. We tried to talk to someone just to let them know we needed to leave because we needed food and no one would acknowledge us. So sad because I had heard good things. read more

Stopped in last night and had a great first visit! Here's a breakdown of my experience. Atmosphere - Lively, fun atmosphere. Good music. Bright, yellow walls and Latin American inspired decor. Service - We were seated at a high top near the front windows. Our server was also the bartender. Despite how busy she was, she was definitely on top of her game and service did not suffer! Drinks, apps and entrees came out very fast, as did the check. Appetizers - We split an empanadilla filled with beef picadillo. It was hot and crispy and came with a side of mayo ketchup. Excellent! We also got an order of bizcochos de cangrejo, which are basically crab cakes with red and yellow sauce. I can't remember what the sauces were but they were both delicious and complemented the crab cakes well. We devoured that one. Entrees - I got the pernil with a side of PR rice and plantains. While I think the pernil could have used some acidity to round out the salt, overall their kitchen killed this one! Very good. And such a large portion my husband had to polish it off for me. He got the shrimp mofongo which came came out in a traditional pilon. It was delicious and came with mad shrimp. Worth the price. Drinks - I got the ABUELO, which is their take on an Old Fashioned, and my husband ordered a margarita. Both were very good but quite expensive for the serving. I'm a light drinker and one drink is usually all I need for a decent buzz but my abuelo missed the mark! Not a deal breaker, though. Overall, we had a great dinner and we'll be back! As I sit here in Sabor Tropical enjoying some of the most flavorful slow cooked pork I've had this side of the Rio Grande I cant help but watch people flood into Cafe Lulu and shake my head. I know this is starting off like a diss track against LuLu and I don't want it to sound that way. But if it's flavor and authenticity you crave and you come across this review, please come give this new spot a try... skip your played out Asian slaw for some empanadas or those greasy home made chips for some tostones. Seriously. This may be the 2, $5 happy hour mojitos I just pounded doing a lot of the loose lippin here. But good god, this food is just better. Isn't that what Yelp is all about?!? Ps. I've been in Milwaukee looking for a spot to call my favorite for almost 2 months. My search is over. Sabor Tropical is the spot! The wait for the food was a bit longer than I expected but with every bite, I was reminded IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT!!! Every bite was so delicious, fresh and tasted completely home made! Having grown up enjoying Caribbean cooking regularly, I was pleasantly surprised with the explosion of fresh home cooked flavors. Felt like I was enjoying food in someone's actual kitchen. A great suggestion to try is the beef stew, otherwise known as the Ropa Vieja. It is simply put... exquisite! You will not be disappointed. Plentiful and flavorful, the Ropa Vieja is a traditional dish. It's tenderness and richness made this one of my favorites! This experience has made me want to try everything on the menu. If you want Milwaukee's absolutely BEST Old Fashioned, please make sure Carolin is the bartender on duty! Not only did she accommodate, because they normally use Bacardi for the Latin version called "El Abuelo", she gave an elegant twist to my cocktail using Bullet Bourbon infusing it with a combination of cinnamon and flamed orange peel. Adding these elements allowed for some depth of smokey flavors and citrus notes to make every sip a real bourbon treat. This classic cocktail (also my favorite) was heightened by the exquisite aromatic essences from the charred orange slices. While whiskey has its own complex flavor, this combination proved to be irresistible and impressive. I'll be back often!!! read more

Sabor Tropical has dine-in service as of 2/10/2021. The dine-in option was not reflected on the website so we almost passed them up. But I decided to call and find out anyway because I really wanted to try their food and we were looking for an in-restaurant experience. With a little extra effort we found that we could have dinner there. The tables are widely spaced apart and the staff were all wearing a mask. The restaurant has a pleasantly low-lit Puerto Rican atmosphere. The food is absolutely outstanding! We had Ceviche y Tostones, Lomo De Res Salteado with French fries and Puerto Rican rice. The fries were IN the braised beef and sauce, not on the side. They also serve plantain chips when seated at the table. All I'm going to say about the sauce that comes with the chips is don't. Just don't. We also had the fried cheesecake dessert which is delish and different. We had a 100% great experience :) read more

I think I could have more easily eaten a drink coaster instead. The service not so good. The server came took one of our diner's dessert order and then left. 10 minutes later his dessert comes. First, the service wonderful! Even with them being so short staffed (1 waitress, a hostess, a woman who may be the owner) they were all so nice and friendly. It was very, very busy, but they did a great job of informing us about our food and the time it would take to make. I appreciated that! Now the food, YUM!!! Mofongo, the jibaritos, the tostones, the tacos (steak and chicken), everything was excellent and flavored so well.
