I did my classroom and pool portion with another company (SF Bay Area) but needed to get certified before an upcoming trip and found Sac City Scuba through his great reviews. Since I am not local and had completed part of my training already, he helped review everything with me and took the time to make sure I had everything in-place correctly and coordinate all the details (gear, training, ecourse, etc.) to finish off my recreational open water cert. Great experience. Joe, the owner/ level 4 dive master, is an awesome instructor. He gives you a lot of detailed instruction and reviews diving theory to keep you safe. He is very patient, and when you are struggling with a technique, he will take the time to make sure you get it right. One of the few , if not the only, establishment that provides a PADI certification in the Sacramento area. What makes this shop such a great place to get scuba certified is that the owner lets you get the entire certification within Sacramento. I'm not the strongest swimmer but I make up for it in enthusiasm lol. But Joe worked with me and my spouse and our swimming levels and was super chill with us, and very encouraging and helpful . We took a little longer than some but Joe took it all in stride and in spite of a busy schedule , provided another instructor gratis which helped us complete our certification before our Bermuda trip . We are so excited to go on our first scuba adventure . Other plusses about Sac city scuba are that it's in the same building as the Sacramento Swimming center so the in pool training happens right next door. And since it's an Olympic half size it's a great place for the first training training . Our open water dives happened with Dylan (who is equally amazing, and so full of the joy of diving that his enthusiasm is infectious) in Folsom lake and we even saw fish. So we got to get PADI certified in Sacramento without having to make any substantive trips. Try and get Joe and Dylan and tell them I recommended you . Once we completed the online portion, it was time for our first confined water dive. Joe's dive shop features an on-site 12-foot deep, quarter-size Olympic pool--perfect for beginners like us. Joe at Sac City Scuba was super helpful for my wife and I in learning scuba. Not only is Joe personable and genuinely a polite guy that you feel good buying things from, but I felt like he did a good job of instructing and was never too busy to answer a question, no matter how silly or basic, in the water or in the shop. Sac City Scuba, in that respect, is more than a business, they seem to be a community. While the other shops in the area are similarly pleasant and may have more things on the wall to touch, Joe has always been a straight shooter and given great advice and helped my prioritize needs over wants or pointless gear, even if it meant he could have made a few more bucks off me. I wanted to get my certification to scuba dive in Japan and got it here! I did the open water course and online training module. The module took quite a bit of time so be prepared to not cram it right before class. I did mine over a week. For orientation we went over scuba gear assembly and basic principles before we did our 2 pool sessions. We also completed 2 open water dives at a location of choice. I chose Folsom lake for convenience on a Saturday and Sunday morning. I highly recommend sac city scuba. The customer service was excellent. I had to cancel my open water dive the first time because I developed some dive anxiety. Joe didn't ask for a refund or anything and I just rescheduled when I felt comfortable. Yay finally I got certified! My family and I did it together as a group. All of us were coming from different parts of the bay area(Santa Clara, redwood city, concord, tracy) only one person lived in Sac. Getting certified is a 4 step process: 1. Take online Padi course, about 8 hrs of reading and videos several weeks to months before. Schedule your pool dive. 2. Orientation a couple days before pool dive(joe was very flexible with us since we all lived far away and we did it day before), get fitted for your gear that you will rent and buy. Take your Exams 4. Pool dive: 2 days, learn basic scuba skills and practice getting gear and equipment together and scuba under water. Because of pool issues out of anyone's control we did it all in one day. Schedule your open water dive. 5. Open water dive: choose between monterey, lake tahoe, or Folsom lake. Our group went to lake tahoe and dives were over the course of two days. We stayed an extra night as it is mandatory to wait 6hrs after diving to return back to lower altitudes. It was a great bonding experience. Joe is great chill laid back teacher who teaches you basic skills, some advanced ones, and what you really need to know along with some interesting stories he's had in his years haha. Overall it was a great experience, scuba diving is definitely not an inexpensive hobby. Its quite the investment at least at the start. But there is nothing quite like being underwater. Bonus is Joe has the best dog ever who loves to be loved. read more

Went here in a Saturday. Hours posted were 2-5. We got there at 2:45 and it was closed. All lights off. There was a sign on the door saying back by 3, but it didn't look like someone had just run out for a minute. Totally dark, so we went to a different dive shop not too far away. I was a little concerned when I pulled up to Sac Scuba because it was small and didn't look like it would have a large selection of items. I need a mask and snorkel and a regulator serviced. Wasn't sure they'd be able to have a selection. read more
