I tried explaining that it wasn't what I asked for and the owner spent at least 15 minutes trying to convince me that I got what I wanted, then when I wasn't giving in said that I hadn't been clear with what I asked for and that I had changed my mind. She finally told me to google pictures of ombré.... She offered to have me come back and get it fixed for $80 to cover the cost of products but I will definitely be staying away. I was excited for all the good reviews but I'm not comfortable with a place that will spend more time trying to change your mind than trying to figure out what it is that you wanted in the first place. My friend did get a quick, basic trim that she was happy with. Owner was also generally kind of rude to my stylist (who was very nice and friendly) - that's just another reason for me to stay away.

Don't get me wrong, Margaret was super sweet, and my haircut wasn't bad, but if I'm going to cough up $72 (with tip) for a haircut (I know, I know, it's hard to find anything under that these days...) then I want to be absolutely ecstatic about my hair (and my overall experience!), and, well, I wasn't. For getting your hair cut in someone's house, I don't see how one should be expected to pay salon prices. Your hair is rinsed in the kitchen sink. There's no store to pay rent on. No staff to hire. Shouldn't that make the prices a little more reasonable since it's going straight into her pocket? Also, I went in to get my pixie trimmed. I thought that would qualify as a man's cut (I mean, isn't it?) but, alas, I had to pay the "being a woman" tax (but that's a rant for another day...). It's definitely not the best cut I had, though, sure, it's not horrible. Again, Margaret was very nice and she does make her space welcoming and cozy. Ultimately, though, if I'm going to pay that much money, I want the full salon experience and not feel as though I've been jipped.

I have to admit I was really nervous going in, because my hair wasn't in the greatest shape. A year ago, at a different salon, I had a horrible experience that left me with a severe damage line. I really wanted to make the change to blonde, but realized that I'd have to be careful... This translated into me bombarding Margaret with a ton of questions and concerns. At the fancy, expensive salon that I used to go to in Manhattan, I'd sometimes feel like the stylists were snooty and didn't have the patience to answer all my questions. Margaret really took the time to talk me through all of them, being completely realistic and honest about everything from what would look good with my skin tone to how much damage I could expect if I went platinum and what measures I should take to keep my hair healthy. After talking to her and trying out a test strand, I finally decided to go an ashy/dirty blonde, which I'm so happy with. I'm excited that I got to make a dramatic change to my hair without damaging it irreparably, like the online accounts I'd read before. It's only been two days, but I can't wait until the next time I can go back to try something new with Margaret.

I initially went to the salon in the spring of 2019 in preparation for my engagement shoot. I'm natural and wanted my hair pressed with clip-ins for my photos. I'll admit the consultation took a while but that is because Noël really wants to understand your hair! She was honest, took in my considerations (I really needed it cut, but didn't want to right before the photos!) and helped me get some high-quality extensions for my shoot. Following that, I became a regular as my goal was to really grow it as much as possible for my upcoming wedding. This involved a few cuts, several Emergency repair treatments, and ultimately she recommended a keratin treatment to help with my curl manageability and improve growth (I have more kinky, coarse hair). After a year, my hair grew to its longest point and actually past the length of the clip-ins I ordered a year prior. The few times I have gotten it straightened my curls have always come back! I went rogue one time when I couldn't get in and got it straightened at another salon and unfortunately experienced some heat damage - never again, but we are nursing them back :) During COVID she has continued to do virtual appointments when I can't come in, consulted me on various treatments and my wash routine, and shipped me products as I have since moved out of state. My hair continues to experience tremendous growth with the products I order from the salon and I am looking forward to being a regular again once it is safe to travel more freely! While the services are on the pricier side, I am willing to make the investment. I can honestly say, you get what you pay for at NNY. (also looking forward to when they can serve wine and snacks again at the salon:)

12/13/19 : Honest Review…read more I live in the neighborhood and surprisingly this is my first time getting a chance to check out Noel's hair salon. Right off the bat every employee was super nice, friendly, kind, and sweet. My questions were answered quickly, yet detailed and professional, each receptionist was very kind. I was given tea, and treated wonderfully while getting my hair done and even after. I will say though, they are on a bit of the pricey side. I usually pay $45.00 for a regular wash and press, but I payed nearly $70 at Noel's. It's okay though, because it was all worth it! My hairstylest Harley was super sweet, she made sure I left looking fabulous, and she really worked her magic! I got to meet the owner as well who makes you feel right at home. I would definitely recommend this salon to anyone in the neighborhood, or even if you just want to stop by and check it out!

When I got there, she talked me through what I wanted and how much we should chop off. My hair is really thin and flat so I really appreciate it when stylists try to give it some life, which she definitely did. The prices are very reasonable, especially for the quality of cut that you get. Overall, this has been one of my favorite places for a haircut and I will definitely be coming back for as long as I am in the area.

Today I had the displeasure of experiencing a very rude & belligerent customer while getting my hair done. A woman (who's race I will not mention) came in the salon and complained from the moment she walked in. I chalked It up to her having a bad day. She made very rude and distasteful comments towards her stylist and the stylist remained professional. She was then given a new stylist and complained about the stylist not knowing how to do "straight Japanese hair because this is not a Japanese salon". She then began to made very insensitive comments about African Americans and black owned businesses. As an African American I was highly offended and mortified that someone would behave in this manner. Although she behaved the way she did, the stylists and owner remained very professional and did not stoop down to her level. When It came time to pay for the service she received she complained about the price (that she was quoted online when she made the appointment and in person when she walked in). She then refused to pay for the service she received which led to the owner to threaten to call the police. The woman became very belligerent as she was asked to leave and shouted many racist slurs on her way out of the door as myself and other salon customers were in shock. Safe to say after taking a brief breather, the owner finished my hair and SLAYED as she always does. I commend her for remaining cool and collected in a very negative situation.
