I'm extremely disappointed with my experience at Sacred Heart School. I attended Sacred Heart in Los Angeles growing up and had such a meaningful experience, so I truly hoped my daughter could continue that same tradition. I followed every step and guideline required for enrollment. I brought my daughter in for testing and was told I would receive a call within two days with feedback. Unfortunately, I never received any follow-up. I called multiple times after that and was repeatedly told they would call me back the next day--but no one ever did. Eventually, I couldn't even get through to anyone. This was especially upsetting because my daughter was excited about attending. As a private school where families pay out of pocket, I expected a much higher level of communication and care. The lack of professionalism and follow-through is unacceptable. When we attended a tour with my mother-in-law, we also felt very rushed, as if our time and interest didn't matter. I even explained that I was willing to make a 40-minute commute daily for my daughter to attend, which is a big commitment--but that didn't seem to matter to them. Overall, the experience made it clear that this school does not prioritize prospective students or families. The front office appeared understaffed and disorganized, and the lack of communication speaks volumes. We just returned from the 7/8th graders' DC/NY Trip and it's worth a shout out on its own. Kudos to Sacred Heart for all the crazy hard work to make this happen! I had the privilege to go with my son and the experience was absolutely priceless!!! read more

AN IN-DEPTH REVIEW A YEAR IN THE MAKING.... FROM A PARENT WHO TRANSFERRED THEIR TWO CHILDREN FROM A LOCAL SCHOOL IN AN EXCELLENT PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT TO SACRED HEART SCHOOL (SHS) FOR THE 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR. In short, I was apprehensive to transfer my two children (in lower elementary grades) to SHS since their local public school was simply awesome and within walking distance. However, I yearned for years for my children to have a top-notch comprehensive education that focused on character development and was faith-based. I can say with full confidence and earnest recommendation that I found what I was looking for, and much more, at SHS. PROS: Academics- Competitive academic environment. The grading system was new for us, specifically, I mean by that is that a 92%, is not an A-, but a B+. Each classroom has a class aide to assist the teacher. Many teachers are veteran teachers, and as I understand, some staff were also former SHS students. Students learn cursive in 3rd grade. Small student community- I was pleasantly surprised with this element. Although my kids were new to the school, they quickly made friends with their fellow classmates. Drop-off and pick-up wasn't overly busy. Parents seem to be involved. Anti-bullying policy is enforced. Faith- Each morning the student body has morning prayer and announcements. The students also pray before departing for the day. Once a month, there is a student Mass. The students attend Mass during the school day if it's a Holy Day of Obligation. My understanding is that not all students have to be Catholic to attend SHS. The school puts on an adorable Christmas production. The school emphasizes the importance of values and good morals. Sports- There are various school sponsored sports your child can participate in; soccer, track, volleyball, football, basketball, and cheer. As a busy family, it's been great to have the sports program integrated with the school and practice right after school. I also feel the fees were lower or on par with outside organizations. I feel my children participating in sports only furthered the camaraderie with their fellow classmates. Art/Spanish/Computer Instruction- There are fixed minutes each week that children participate in each of the aforementioned subjects. I thought this was a nice balance to round out their academic instruction. School Year Calendar- School starts in late August and ends in early June. Easter Break starts the Wednesday before Holy Thursday and was about 10 days long. Christmas break was about 3 weeks long. On a holiday weekend, the kids are out at noon that Friday (minor, but loved this). CONS: Paperback books/ one set of books: I do wish the children had a set of books at home, rather than shuffle them back-and-forth between school and home. Also, the paperback books can take quite the beating and begin to look unappealing as time goes on. Snack/Lunch Area: The area is a shelter (not enclosed with walls), so the kids are exposed to the elements like wind, heat, chill. Although, if the weather is deemed to be extreme or it's a rainy day, the children will eat in their classrooms. I wish there was an enclosed cafeteria. OTHER MENTIONS: I've always regarded school as a partnership between the teacher and the child's parents. The teacher does their part, but I feel it's our responsibility as parents to fill any holes in understanding or give our children extra support. If a parent has the expectation that their child's lack of progress should be blamed solely and squarely on the teacher/staff, perhaps SHS isn't for your family. I've witnessed the teachers and aides working very diligently in providing the parents timely feedback, grading coursework/homework, and updating Gradelink with graded assignments. Even as a paying parent, I stand by this sentiment. The school day is from 8am to 3pm for TK - 8th grade. Before and after school care is available from 6am -6pm for an additional fee. School pictures in the Fall and Spring with vendor: Lifetouch. Uniforms: available through Dennis uniforms. They have a store in Yorba Linda which was great for us when trying to get a feel for their sizing. The vendor also has great customer service. As far as tuition for a family with multiple students, SHS has the best discount! The Principal has been at the school for (I believe) 2 years. He's been communicative with the parents during COVID and is visible on-campus. FINAL THOUGHT: Overall, my kids rave about their school! They look forward to starting another school year. The only thing is school cares about is MONEY! The staff, with the exception of Mary, the secretary, are all so close minded, disrespectful, arrogant and negative. I had 2 children enrolled at this school and both received nothing but negativity, fear and assumptions. The teachers are all so negative! Daily my children were told how they would never learn anything, how they are not paying attention and that God is watching them and very sad. What kind of environment is this?!? Daily nothing but negativity and instilling fear into the young minds of children. After many messages to both the teachers and principal, I received nothing but negative comments and how "it is a rigorous program". So that means not having a nurturing environment where the children can grow and learn how to be loving people? No compassion for the children as human beings? Both my girls were deathly afraid of asking questions for the fact that they would be told "you're not paying attention" or that the teacher "already answered that question and will not repeat themselves". I WAS PAYING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS SO MY CHILDREN WOULD BE TAUGHT, NOT DISRESPECTED AND DEMEANED EVERY DAY. Enrolling my children in this school is the biggest mistake I have ever made. Beware! I do not see many reviews from alumni here, so I will be the first. I attended sacred heart from 6th-8th grade, while my little brother attended from 1st-8th. We originally came to the school from public school, and our mother put us into this school as it was what she thought was the best option for us to pursue education and our faith, especially after my older brother ran into some issues with bullying at the public middle school. I would also like to take the time to note that I am writing this ten years after the fact, after going through a rigorous undergrad program at UCSB, and getting into some of the nations top institutions for graduate school. I am writing this to beg you to not put your children in this school. The only thing this school offered me long term was connections to the church, and honestly that was not the school as much as it was the church itself and it's affiliated youth groups. The faculty at the school actually made me think God hated me, and the religious trauma I experienced at this school breaks my heart to look back on. The classes did not academically prepare me for high school, when I came to Sacred Heart I was a year a head in math, and years beyond in reading comprehension. I only missed one math question on the entrance exam. Despite me entering the middle school ahead of the curve, I left Sacred heart and went into my freshman year of high school as though there was a huge gap in my learning and understanding of how to achieve in the classroom. I remained in tutoring for upwards of a year to catch me up. And that's just academia. The policing of certain policies of the school were absolutely disguisting and would have been illegal if not at a private institution. From checking the inside of girls skirts to make sure they were the appropriate brand of uniform, to giving children detention for changing out of their PE clothes after PE, and giving students detention for their parents not calling/ writing to clear their absence, giving children EXPIRED cup of noodles if they forgot their lunch (as the lunch program at the school is order ahead, if one forgot their lunch, a punishment would be threatened/ administered and the only thing the child was given to eat was a cup of noodle, not even fruit.) While I understand that the institution is private and was meant to reflect a certain culture, the lack of care and awareness from staff was deplorable. The only positive experiences I had there were in the youth group, which is something I could have attended for free. My parents worked long hours and made numerous sacrifices to ensure I had a better opportunity at a quality education, and instead I got bullied by students and faculty while I engaged with content that didn't even prepare me for high school, let alone college. I pray that the school is under entirely new staff, and even then I would still not put my child here. read more
