I've been here once before, but it was for brunch, so I wanted to come back and try some of the game meats that it's famous for. Since I was spending Thanksgiving alone, that seemed like a good special occasion to splurge. I arrived 15 minutes late for my reservation, but I had called ahead to let them know and it was no problem. I saw a lot of cars parked on the side of the road before the turn off, but I decided to drive all the way into the driveway and pay the valet so that the guys working on a holiday could actually earn some money. Upon arrival everyone was very friendly and welcoming. There was a hot dinner roll and butter and a salt cellar ready for me as soon as I sat down at my table (which the hostess had let me choose so I could be comfortable). When I went to order a drink I noticed that the Thanksgiving cocktails were different than the regular cocktail menu, so I asked my server if those were the only options and she said yes, but asked me if there was something on the regular menu that I had wanted. I asked her about the martini with blue cheese olives and she offered that the bartender could make that for me even though it wasn't on the menu. It was the dirtiest Jen Martini I've ever had, which is a very good thing and the blue cheese olives were delicious. (I only realized later when I got the bill that I would be charged $25 for this.) Since it was Thanksgiving, there was a prix fixe menu being offered. I decided to get all the meats and not turkey. The grilled pheasant Caesar salad was okay, but the pheasant was cold and tasted a little dried out as though it had been prepared ahead of time. The Caesar was mayo-y without much of an anchovy taste, so it wasn't my thing, although the croutons were really good. For the second course, I had the bison tartare, which was excellent, but really needed some toast or crostini to spread it on. It felt weird eating it just with a fork. And I couldn't find anybody to give me another dinner roll. For my entree, I ordered the seared New Zealand elk tenderloin medallions, but I regretted my choice. The elk itself was actually perfectly prepared in terms of temperature, with a nice pink center for medium rare. But the outside was a little dried out and not freshly seared, as though it had been sitting under a heat lamp. It's also not a very elegant dish, as they aren't really medallions but huge chunks. I didn't love the pumpkin ragout that it came with, although the crispy onions were nice. It was just too much of a brown stew for me and not the kind of elevated cuisine that earned this restaurant a Michelin star. For dessert I decided to be more adventurous than pumpkin pie, so I got the bread pudding with the toffee sauce. The bread pudding came out hot, but again it seemed like it had been sitting under a heat lamp. The vanilla bean ice cream on top was very good. The service was attentive at the beginning, but it got worse the longer I was there. My meal took 2 hours without me dawdling, with long breaks in between courses and no opportunity to order another drink (I might've liked wine with my entree). At one point I got bored so I just wandered around the restaurant looking at stuff and taking photos. The place is very interesting and gets 5 stars for atmosphere. That was enough for me for Thanksgiving. But food-wise, it didn't make me want to come back. read more

The managers at the restaurant are complete jerks. Do not go to this restaurant. Specifically Harry and Hargun were awful people as I was trying to book my rehearsal dinner. They sent me a menu, and then sent me an agreement which said prices were subject to change... even though I would be paying a deposit. Not only is this absolutely unacceptable but their attitude was especially unacceptable. They were unresponsive for over a week. They were inhospitable after we called and emailed several times. They were disrespectful in tone and in willing to work with me to book my event. They claim to have Michelin star service and they absolutely do not. Do not book here. read more

(Bad for the price point.) This place was on my wish list for several years and I finally took the leap to visit. Unfortunately it wasn't what I expected food wise. For starters waiters automatically get 20% gratuity so they aren't motivated to provide amazing service because the tip is going to be high with the prices from the menu. What I liked is we got bread and an asparagus soup before food was served, but we were served one bread roll each. Then the food flavors were fairly average for the price point. I thought the flavors would be nothing but amazing because of the hype of the business and the steep prices, but I was wrong. It's not worth returning to. The location is beautiful, but between valet parking, high tip, high prices, and okay food it's not an investment I'm willing to make. read more

My wife and I got married here It was the most magical night of our lives. The ambience was incredible. The appetizers were incredible. We had 50 of our family members who had the most memorable dinners between filet mignon or salmon or some type of big game meat. It was incredible and then the pandemic hit! well here we are six years later and my wife and I decided to go back tonight for our anniversary..We walked in and the hostess was sick eating soup. we started off with a couple glasses of wine my Bella glos Pinot, the first glass was rancid, but the fine guy at the bar poured me a new glass out of a new bottle my wife got a Chardonnay by the glass of which they only offer two.. back in the day you could get more than that by the glass... not anymore.... we sat down the waiter came over. We had to ask for some bread it wasn't offered. They brought over some lentil soup that was so heavily spiced. My wife couldn't drink it. We ordered a scallop small appetizer and we asked if they could not put the sauce on it. They brought the scallops out and they were burnt on one side,Furthermore we ordered a Caesar salad. I never seen so much dressing on a salad and not to mention some kind of bottled awful Caesar dressing. Lastly, we both ordered the Seabass... I asked the guy if it was fresh Seabass he said oh yes, sir absolutely, we knew when it came out It was fresh frozen fish and it came out of some kind of package. it wasn't a square thick, flaky chunk of fish that you would pay $68 for at a good restaurant. It was accompanied by burnt asparagus and black hard rice and a bunch of olives and tomatoes cut in half. It just was a failure. The fish was awful. The presentation was awful. The entire meal was just awful. Unfortunately, this place is done and in the end the owner son comes around and ask you how was everything and you just don't have the heart to say your restaurant days are coming to an end ... you feel bad for them... I can say this. Our wedding night was the greatest night of our lives and the restaurant that night was incredible but that was six years ago and it's just not the same place anymore. I hope somebody buys this place and brings back the class,along with classy dressed people and a clean classy environment...the Michelin rating has left the building...SAD! read more

Saddlepeak seems to be a shadow of its former self! They took off a wild game choice (pheasant) in favor of chicken - CHICKEN!!! Really? We spent $155+ for CHICKEN? The other food choices were weak. Dessert - really? Bread pudding and brownies? Again, we paid $155 pp for brownies? Couldn't do a creme brulee or fruit based dish? SO disappointed. Wonderful Christmas brunch today with the family. Bar was cozy and warm and the cocktails were expertly mixed by the friendly bar staff. Ambience was perfect for the start to the holiday season. Staff were attentive and friendly in the restaurant. Manager was great and oversaw the whole visit, checking in to see how things were going. Overall experience was really festive and a great start to the holiday season. Would thoroughly recommend the brunch or dinner at this time of year. read more

To start with, they made a 5pm dinner reservation for our group. The doors are locked until 5pm so when we showed up early to enjoy a drink, we stood outside. Of course the ambiance is probably the best aspect of this restaurant, it didn't let us down. The service was pretty sharp and we felt cared for. The food however seems to be slipping a bit. Obviously known for their game offerings, the more "standard" dishes fail some. This leaves you somewhat unsettled once the bill arrives. Thinking our yearly holiday dinner will find a new host next year. read more

Thanksgiving Dinner this week. This used to be an dependable restaurant but we were sadly disappointed by our recent Thanksgiving dinner. It began with confusion about seating upon arrival. We were seated at an ok table, No complaints about table. The waitstaff were pleasant but the service was very slow to the point of being ridiculous with 20-30 minutes between courses. We were told the kitchen was backed up. The restaurant was half full. There was only an expensive 4 course option. I seemed to recall that ordering off a menu was also possible on making reservations, but I am not sure. The problem was that the salads were abysmal for a start. We had to continually ask for utensils with each course, which they grabbed from an adjacent table. Our waters were only refilled up request. The main course were ok but overpriced. The entire experience was a big letdown from prior experiences. They need to get their act together or they will soon be up for sale....again. Not a good experience with a feeling of being ripped off overall. That is not the way to run a restaurant. Very disappointing. We hope they recover since the location is wonderful. read more

We really wanted to prove most of the negative reviews wrong. Sadly we can't. Not completely... Yes 20 bucks to park and yes you have to pay in advance. The lot had maybe 6 cars. It was a complete turn off when the hostess gaslit us telling us that it would be a while before our table was ready and asked if we wanted to sit at the bar and have a drink until then. When we declined, she simply left the room. Before she came back to seat us five minutes later, no one else walked in, or left. The restaurant area where she did seat us was more than half empty. There were about five tables occupied. The cesar salad was good. In previous reviews there were complaints about the amount of dressing. So I asked them to ease up. It was perfect. The gazpacho cup was really good. We loved it. Here is where it fell apart. My wife ordered the chicken breast. 55 bucks. It was served in a bowl.. a very small bowl. And, because the chicken was not very tender, it was difficult to cut and the potatoes were undercooked. When my wife asked for a box to take it home, we pointed out that the potatoes were undercooked to the waiter. They boxed up the chicken, but threw the potatoes out. I mean, they could have taken a minute to recook them or remake them and send them home with us. It's so weird that they didn't even make an effort. I ordered the ribeye. 88 bucks. It was ok... a little tough to cut but not nearly as bad a previous reviews described. The biggest issue for me was the au jus. There was sooooo much. There was so much, the mash potato was soupy. Literally if I picked up the mash potato with my spoon it ran off it like liquid. The mash potato and spinach were destroyed by the au jus. I tilted the plate slightly so my wife could spoon out some of it in an attempt to soften up her chicken. We were super disappointed specifically because of the price point. If you're gonna charge that kind of money, you really need to be on point. We loved the restaurant itself, but these folks did very little to make us want to come back. read more

Originally founded in 1900 and set up in the Malibu mountains Saddle Peak truly is a special experience and an LA staple. I go out to eat at least once a week to a new place, every week, and can honestly say this is one of the better places that I've been to in a few months, and I usually go to places of the same price scale. Our server Steven was fantastic and did a wonderful job as well as the rest of the staff that we encountered. The inside is designed like an old hunting lodge, which, at one point it actually used to be, complete with an inside that looks like a log cabin with taxidermy and chandeliers all over the place. Extremely unique for the Los Angeles area. They have valet only for $10 and the attendant on duty tonight was also very polite. Some of the items on the menu are a bit overpriced, but not by a lot only about a $10-$15 raise compared to other places down closer to the water. However, every dish we had was fantastic and the atmosphere really added to that as well. I started off with the French Onion Soup, which was a bit expensive for $24 but it was truly great. The flavors were rich and deep and it's a dish I order all over town and can say this is one of the better ones that I have had. Next came the Bronzino which was fantastic. The skin was extremely crispy and the black rice with it was a great combination. It was also about $10-$15 more than usual being that they asked for $54 for this dish but still it was a good sized portion and truly delicious. Finally for dessert I had the famous toffee bread pudding which was not overpriced and came in at the standard $15. It was an absolute wonderful end to the meal. I understand how this place could be a bit expensive for some, but I honestly didn't mind the slight increase in price just because of the trade-off of the location and experience. I would happily come here again, and plan to in the future. This would definitely fall into the special occasion dinner, even though it was just a regular Saturday dinner for us. WE have been here before, in 2023. Prices have now been raised to an extraordinary level, and the valet was mandatory at $20! The bar and restaurant tacks on an extra 20%, so no tip is needed, but the 20% doesn't go to the servers! Food was OK, but overpriced with small portions. I was disappointed. Bill was over $350 for the two of us, and we split the main course ($145). Sorry to leave this review but you will need to make some changes management to get our business back. Incredibly disappointed in the professionalism of the staff. I brought my fiancé and future in-laws to dinner here for her college graduation. After waiting over an hour for our meal did I find out it was still not close to being prepared. Neither the server or manager even bothered to update us on extended delays. Apparently they had some issues with the kitchen. Now 830pm I requested they cancel my order and prepare our check. They still had the audacity to charge a 20% service fee and didn't even offer a discount. I'll never go back to this restaurant. It's a shame we were expecting so much more. read more

One of my favourite spots in town. It's a hidden gem deep in Calabasas and the 'bu. If you go at night, be prepared. This spot is tucked away in the middle of nowhere (and I love it). They also have valet! *yay* I prefer to valet... it's efficient. however, the street parking isn't too bad *if valet is full*. (i suck at parallel parking, and I survived). Anyhow, The food is excellent, they have a wonderful selection of drinks, the service staff is pleasant, and the ambiance is lovely! They have a scotch room upstairs (they have all of my favourite single malt scotch and single malt Japanese whisky *yum*), which I love, and a cute outdoor area where you can smoke your favourite cigars. Great vibes, good food, scotch, and cigars with great company... what's there not to love? read more

My husband took me here for Valentine's Day and the food was amazing as usual... the prices were as outrageous as the food was delicious though. It's better to go on a normal day where you don't have to pay the astronomical price for a 4 course meal not including drinks. Any meal that over $200 should include drinks. But other than the price, everything was great! I came for the quail and it didn't disappoint! The brocollini, the scallops were also to die for. I didn't care for the desserts, I picked the lemon cake out of options like goat cheese mouse, but it was meh. Overall great food. read more

This is definitely an event restaurant. You have to drive through the Malibu mountains to arrive at valet only parking. When you enter the entrance you have to pull on the deer horns on the door to get in. My understanding is that the building was once an old hunting lodge. In the era of COVID, you are escorted through the deserted dining room to the patio dining area. The patio is nice, you can view a small canyon around you. I'd say the only drawback of the restaurant was the level of bugs that sometimes flew in your face. You are outside in nature so for me that is an acceptable problem. We ordered the shishitsu peppers and they were fantastic. For the main course we got the chef's choice that was a selection of bison, emu, and elk. My significant other ordered the trout. I was surprised To see her trout was great. Out of the three I had the bison was by far the best. The elk and emu were so so but the sauce that was added was terrific. We ordered a Syrah and that was great too. Finally the service was exceptional. They added a 20% charge for service but ask for no tips. In the end we paid about $250 for two, but as a special event restaurant I'd say it was worth it read more

Very disappointing experience on December 15, 2024. Had a holiday dinner and the service was nothing short of horrible. The waiter said that they were short staffed but a party of 60 cancelled an hour before and he was complaining about that but I cannot imagine what the service would have been like if they showed up. We couldn't get drinks for 35 minutes, plates or any attention for anything we wanted. The waiter kept complaining but what happened to the servers for the party of 60 who didn't show up? This was completely unacceptable for a high end, expensive restaurant. read more

We were served our salads before the champagne which we had to ask for again!!!! Then while we were eating the salads our entree arrived!!! Then after a half hour of finishing our salads we asked for the entree (eggs Benedict) and we were served COLD eggs Benedict. We asked for warm eggs Benedict and waited another 15 min for it to arrive. The croissant was burnt and soggy and one of us only received one egg! The potatoes were overcooked and unappetizing!! The desert we chose was flan. It was like a flat custard! Not a proper flan! When we complained to the manager for a second time of our service we were told there was nothing he could do. His name is Harry and he should not be a service manager because he did nothing to make our $455 lunch enjoyable!!! He even said "Please post your review on Yelp because we have so many good reviews"!! not true! this place has gone way downhill and he's one of the reasons!!!! We will never go back. Many things were under salted or over salted, or just lacking flavor. There's an asian influence throughout the menu, which just doesn't work. We ordered the game trio, and added a 4th meat supplement - a deconstructed duck pastrami. This was sat on deconstructed rye bread... translation: a blended up mush of rye bread. My sister had her wedding here, and came here this year for my birthday. The food is delicious and interesting. Can try different kinds of wild animals. They have taxidermy in the main room. Saddle Peak Lodge is an amazing and one of a kind restaurant. Initially, I had been worried about some of the not so stellar Yelp reviews and whether or not this place would be worth the $$$$ prices. Had an early dinner reservation so by some miracle had the restaurant to ourselves. Valet and check in were super fast and we had options (indoor and out) with choice of table. I was so distracted by the decor of the check in area and main room (I started counting heads on the walls and estimated 20+) that I stopped mid room and just took it all in. It's very unique hunting lodge restaurant - my friend called it Gaston's Inn and that's exactly right. Had heads, antlers, stuffed game, everywhere - but it was nice! The fireplace even had a heady oaky scent that permeated the entrance and just was a perfect touch. Stephen was our server and he was friendly, informative, and checked back often. The menu looked amazing, but the Chef's game trio was a bit pricy - $89 I think. I had a $48 salmon dinner and everything was fantastic. Seriously the best salmon I ever had - served with a chopped sweet potato mix and broccolini. My friend's trio game dish looked amazing - elk, emu or ostrich, and bison I believe. I tasted the emu/ostrich and some piece of bacon and one of the things I noticed throughout everything I tasted was that there were unique combinations of flavor. I got the sense that the chef really understood how ingredients and flavors mix and was able to create new and interesting combinations. I had this leafy mix on my plate that contained cilantro. I hate cilantro - but it was combined with some other ingredients that gave it a sweetness and intrigue - I ate everything on my plate. A bday desert of ice cream and brownie was provided with a candle and a stenciled Happy Birthday in chocolate. All in all the food and experience were excellent and I would highly recommend. There are some very cool places on the second and third levels (which may include a ghost!) and the upstairs outside seating has a fantastic view. Was looking to celebrate so decided to stock by Saddle Peak, which seemed to be one of the fancier restaurants in this area. OYSTERS - a great way to start the meal! They had oysters but offered it with a twist, with a lime flavored foam. We all enjoyed it but you can opt for a more classic taste if you'd like. ELK TENDERLOIN - veryyyyy tender. For a meat known to be very lean, I was super impressed with the texture. However, there was not much to offer in terms of flavor besides the bed of salad and bacon bits it sat on. Was slightly gamey. Could just be I don't like the taste of elk? CHEF'S GAME TRIO - includes elk (see above), bison short rib, and shredded rabbit. You can also upgrade to a quartet and add the quail, which my brother did. My brother said the short rib was good but nothing special, and wasn't a huge fan of the rabbit. The quail was probably the best thing on the plate; too bad it was only a small portion of the meal.
