The place looked great with all of the trophies. Had the Ribeye steak and it was lightly seasoned. It was pretty good, but would have really liked a more robust seasoning. This restaurant is awesome! We ate at the bar 3xs during out trip to thermopolis and were happy with each visit. The ambiance is cool! Love the taxidermy throughout the rooms. So much history on the walls. The pool tables and jukebox on the wall makes it more fun for locals I'm sure. The service was great and super attentive and friendly. The clam chowder was great, I loved the potatoes and burger. No complaints. We will be back next year. read more

Look . . . the place is full of mounted taxidermy'd animals. To some that will be a total turn off. Me? I've got a European mount of an elk skull or 2 hanging around (:-), showing the majesty of animals I've killed as food; but I'm not a big fan of folks who go hunting just to stuff it and put it on a wall. Seems like a lot of ego in exchange for an animal's life. Not a fair trade-off--and certainly not from the animal's perspective. So as you'll see from the pics attached that display of ego knows few limits concerning the former owners of the Thermopolis Hot Springs Hotel and Spa (in which the Safari Club is the establishment's restaurant). They, however, sold out a few years back and the place is now owned by a hotel chain that's kept the old name of the place (and restaurant). The food 3.5 stars. Good deals on drinks (stay there and get a 2-1 drink coupon good at the restaurant and the wine/beer selections are reasonably priced and decent). Generally an All-American menu (e.g., burgers, sandwiches, fries and the like) but with a few extras like trout, hand-cut steaks, roast beef, and don't forget the Rocky Mountain Oysters if ya wanna have a ball! But, no matter what anyone says about the food, its the preserved (once) wildlife and an incredible array of pictures from their worldwide hunting adventures that get everyone's attention. Would I return? Maybe. (The large hot tub of natural geo-thermal waters was fun and the other guests were down-home and neat to talk with). We dined with four of our friends - a Valentine's dinner. The restaurant was crowded so we had a bit of a wait but all 6 of us were very pleased with our meals. Three suggestions: 1. Go hungry! The portions are generous. 2. A vegan will be able to get a great meal too but may not appreciate the ambience as much as us carnivores :-) 3. Tacky taxidermy. Flavorless meat and potatoes of every variety. This place is overpriced by far. Soup out of a can. The sirloin steak was flavorless and tough. The salt shakers don't work. The waitress never even asked us if we wanted anything to drink, but plopped a pitcher of water on the table. The decor looks like someone shot up a zoo. Food is very mediocre, at best. I ordered the chicken fried steak and it was bland while the edges were burnt. MIL said her potatoes (that came with the chicken fried steak) were also tasteless. I didn't mind mine - the gravy was actually decent. My daughter ate her chicken fingers and fries with no complaints. Husband had to Rib Eye with potatoes and he had to heavily season it with salt and pepper to be able to taste anything. He only ate half because it wasn't cooked correctly. And was very chewy. Spinach Artichoke Dip was good. Didn't have cheese curds and prime rib available when we went which was unfortunate. Service was great. Our waiter was extremely friendly. He was the only one hosting all the tables in the bar area so service took awhile. We were at the restaurant for almost 2.5 hours. Would we come back here? Probably not. It's great to come look at the pictures and taxidermy animals. However, the food isn't worth it. read more

After a long day on the water fishing the Big Horn River in Thermopolis, WY, we thought we'd try the Safari Club for a drink. The woman sat us down and said she'd be right with us to take our order. Twenty minutes later and she never came over to take our order, despite taking orders from folks coming in after us. Not sure what the deal was, but we walked out. I was staying at the Inn and I didn't feel like going out again so I opted for the hotel bar/grill. The walls in the bar are lined with dead animal heads which is a little overwhelming. The front desk had given me a 2 for 1 coupon for cocktails so I had 2 Stella's for cheap. The bartender was pleasant and she was quick to fill the drinks of both customers. The special for the night was a brisket sandwich and fries for $ 11,00. The brisket was too fatty but the bun and the fries were palatable. If it was just the food I would rate the place 2 stars but the service was good and the ambiance was comfortable. read more

I've been here in the past and was sad to see the poor condition of this hotel. From bugs in the hallway lights to dirty floors, rooms were in poor condition. I don't know why this place has three stars. First off it's the only relatively upscale place to eat dinner in town. The food was so great we ate here twice in a row. We had steaks and salads. The bread is also fabulous. They were understaffed due to lack of finding help but still so accommodating. Kenny was the best server. Very nice and he got us everything we could need. Not a place for sensitive vegetarians... it's full of "The Big Bad White Hunter's collection". The owner has used this hotel, bar & restaurant to show his life long collection of fish & game trophies from around the world. This is quite an impressive collection that reminds me of something I could imagine Theodore Rosevelt having. The collection is very intriguing and spiked the interest of every patron I seen come in while I ate dinner. As for the food I figured if I was going to eat at the hunters palace I better get the 14 oz prime rib with the stuffed baked potato. With a place like this you know the meats going to be good and the veggies are going to be lean. Driving 100's of miles passing 1,000's of cows who would ever dare to get fish?! Get what you know is going to be fresh the ocean is 1,000's of miles away!! I got the salad and it was iceberg with a few small tomatoes, peas, celery. I hadn't had veggies in a while so it was nice. The prime rib was good and soaking Ajou to keep the meat moist. The stuffed potato was brimming with real thick fresh baked bacon & cheddar cheese. There were no veggies included on the plate just a big slab of meat. OH! We also got the cheese curds and they were awesome! Unfortunately all there good wines from California were out of stock. My wife had the Malbec wine for $5 a glass and she was happy enough. My 4 yr old daughter had the spaghetti and meatballs. It was an adult sized side dish for $5.00! All in total 2 prim ribs, 2 glasses of wine and a spaghetti was $107 with tax; great deal for how much food we ate and had to bring home with us. Looking at other patrons plates it I noticed they were all brimming with food Black Bear Diner style. You can find a decent meal here in the small town of Thermopolis, and after your meal take a stroll over to the town's Hot Springs and look around. If the wind happens to shift and bring the steam from the springs on over to the restaurant, well sorry about that. Sulfurous fumes never enhance the dining experience. The prevailing winds generally keep it going the other way. The drive south of town through Wind River Canyon is a nice scenic drive. Some may find the decor...interesting. The restaurant is "decorated" with mounted heads and complete stuffed animals-lots of them. I'm thinking if I had been here with my kids they might still be having nightmares about all the glassy eyed critters watching them eat. There are literally dozens, and a wide variety at that. Perhaps if Papa Hemingway had gone nuts on safari's and hunting expeditions and thought, "Why, I'd like to survey all the beasts I've bested over the years as I dine. Later, we'll run with the bulls. We were curious so we tried it. The service was ok. 6 dollar for a box of craft mac and cheese and a pickle was kinda outrageous. Me and hubby got the steaks. Mine was the jack Daniel's and his was Mary something. Mine was pretty good, even though the jack Daniel's was so strong I thought that it might get me drunk, but my onions were burnt. Hubby's steak was kinda lacking in flavor and my 1 year old wouldn't even eat his grilled cheese because it was a little on the burnt side. Also my Ice tea tasted like it was starting to go sour. Honestly the worst place I have ever eaten. I wish I could have posted a good review, but there was absolute nothing positive about this experience, this restaurant is a complete joke. How it manages to stay in business I have no idea. Through the night multiple tables left in arms because they were not served or forgotten by staff and servers. The price was more than the steakhouses in the area, and the food was terrible. All 6 of my family members didn't eat more than 2 bites of this the cold flavorless crap. On top it was hours of waiting for nothing, it was over $120 for food that was dry, flavorless, and tasted like a Swanson 99 cents meal. Please don't take your family here! read more

The food was ok other then being way over priced for what you got and the waitress forgot one of the orders and he didn't get til everyone was done eating and never give him a break on the price, we got refills on our sodas and they didn't tell you that there was no free refills and charged $1.50 for each one and we had to kids that got apple juice with there meals and instead of there drinks coming with there meals they charged $2.50 for the tiny glasses of juice, it was a $240.00 ticket and it wasn't even worth half that much. I'm no vegetarian, far from it actually, but even my eyes get a little big whenever I walk into the Safari Club for a meal with family. It's the Big Game Trophy collection. The walls, fireplaces, and railings are covered in the busts of beasts. Not only are we talking the usual deer, beavers, and bears, but hippos, zebras, and massive fish that many of us only ever see in National Geographic. Atmosphere aside (and really, it is something to behold...) the service is really friendly and down-home. There's never a rush to get in or out, and with attachment to a major hotel chain, presents a menu that can pretty much satisfy anyone. While it offers the traditional steak & seafood plates, dishes with local trout and buffalo are good for those looking for something more regional. A full bar with 61 beers on hand is a good spot to grab a drink and take in the sunset on the river that meanders through the Hot Springs County Park. There's a certain ambiance that always makes me think that somewhere in this place there must be an old safari man shining up his rifle and drinking a fine scotch whiskey, pining for the day to hunt the one elusive prey that got away. Until that point, he'll have to be satisfied with the trade off offered by the club; if you catch a trout in the Big Horn River, bring it in and they'll prepare it for you. At least there's a little more personal gratification involved that way, rather than pointing at a creature on the wall and saying "I'll have that." read more

When I hear the word "Safari" I automatically think of those National Geographic films filled with wildlife frolicking through the deserts of Africa. Good ol' Thermopolis, Wyoming however has a bit of a different spin on this word which is reflected if you visit the infamous Safari Club. To help paint a picture, take all those frolicking animals (and many of their mammal friends) and then imagine them mounted on whatever wall or open space that happens to be available. Accepting that you are in Wyoming and there is bound to be a hunting trophy or two gracing your surroundings, the Safari club takes this stereotypical expectation to a new level. With entire walls, lamps, parts of the ceiling and every free corner occupied with beady eyes, it is highly possible that you will find yourself questioning if you walked into a restaurant or taxidermist. As with most of the state, the menu is very meat and potatoes heavy. One redeeming quality is the fact that they have a salad bar. When you are surrounded dead animals both on the table and decor, it's pretty awesome to see something green. While it doesn't compare to anything you would find in home (Vancouver/Portland), by Wyoming standards it's pretty amazing! While the environment may be freaky, at least the employees are all helpful and friendly. As much as I love the city, I can't help but admire the friendliness of small town communities, there is just something very quaint and comforting about it. Unfortunately, I always find a ruin any remote quaint small town moments as it is hard for me to resist dropping as many Brian Fellows (http://www.hulu.com/watch/19051/saturday-night-live-brian-fellows-safari-planet) quotes as possible. Apparently it's not common for the locals to drop "He just smiled at me! The devil goat smiled at me!!! Take him away!" in casual conversation. One reason Gary and I went to Thermopolis was to meet up with our mutual friend Darryl. He's a folk art mentor to his son and the Wyoming Arts Council sponsored folk art demonstrations. Darryl is a master drum maker. After the Gift of the Waters Pageant, we went to the Safari Club for some dinner. I'd been here before. It's now part of the Days Inn inside Hot Springs State Park. I don't know the owner, but the lobby, restaurant and bar are adorned with big game taxidermy. I imagine if you're a vegetarian or vegan, this may not be the place for you. All three of us had the 10oz prime rib for $20. The prime rib was the best I'd had for quite some time. Friendly service, enjoyable atmosphere (so long as you enjoy taxidermied animals) and a mediocre buffalo burger. The meal started with salad that included several different vegetables. The greens didn't seem terribly fresh, however. A small dish of lemon sorbet followed. A bit goofy, but enjoyable regardless. I had high hopes for the buffalo burger. The patty was nice and thick, hand-packed style. It was cooked super-well, however, so it ended up quite dry. I will definitely ask them to ease up on the grill if I come back! The sauteed mushrooms could have added some needed juice, but were also dry. They were cooked in a very salty seasoning, so I ended up removing most of them from the burger. The battered fries were served cool. Fries need to be hot! The service was quite friendly. On the decor. My two year old particularly enjoyed the two full sized stuffed bears, and the small birds in glass cases at her level.
