Highly recommend! We were able to make a reservation online but ended up just sitting at the bar, cuz the vibe was right. Based off recommendations I got from friends, we started with the lamb sambusas and then had the 2 person platter. I got a glass of red wine and my husband tried the African beer. The beer was served in a wooden bowl! The food itself was so good. I wanted to eat my weight in the sambusas - they were spiced so nicely! The 2 person platter was great - we were taught how to eat using the injeria instead of a fork and knife (we were provided cutlery if we didn't want to eat the traditional way). All of it was so good, but I did get a couple of bites of meat with some gristle. We then got a dessert - the black rice witb mango sauce. My husband was so full, he planned to only have one bite. What a hidden gem in Ktown! I love Eritrean food & was in shock to find this place. It was only 7mins walking from my hotel. The food was absolutely amazing! Full of flavor, great spices & so delicious! I am actually going to take the train from Landstuhl tomorrow just to go eat here. Friendly staff & chef also. This is one of the few Ethiopian restaurant to which I've been. II ordered the lamb and beef combination. What a treat! I've eaten here a number of times and the food is always good. This time, it was a little bit less spicy. They have some decent beer in bottles, including some passionfruit and banana beers. An insider tip to my fellow Yelpers: If you like spicy, be sure to ask for this spice tray. It contains four different items that will really heat up the food. They are vegetarian options and chicken but I have always stuck with the lamb and beef. I deducted one star for the service. It is not attentive enough. I have been to a couple restaurants with the same type of food, and this one did not disappoint. We could not decide on which one we wanted, so the waiter offered to do a mixture of two of the sets for 2 people, and it was really delicious. The food is also *extremely* filling. If you have never been to an African-style restaurant like this, then let me tell you about it. You are given rolls of this porous bread, and you use it to grab the food, and then eat the whole lot together. It is delicious. In other restaurants, they typically have a sink out in the open, so you can wash your hands whenever. At Safari, they did not have this, and I found myself wishing they did. The fruit beers served in the (plastic) gourd cup is a novelty, and I recommend it. Ask the waiter for suggestions, because the fruit beers vary dramatically in terms of sweetness. We had some great drinks, and I recommend trying something you normally wouldn't try. The palm beer was great. As with most places in Europe, dining is an experience, so don't show up expecting to get your food and be out of there in 30 minutes. Sit down and enjoy yourself. Also, like most places in Kaiserslautern, make a reservation ahead of time. They serve food at the bar if you are a small party, but call ahead to make sure there is room. read more

For K-town comparison, Safari offers a unique experience of trying something new for a majority of locals, and also for the timid American population that you get to see waiting for hours to eat at Chilis or Macaroni Grill. Very sad sight to see people lined up at these places for no good reason. I understand that the dining options in Ktown are very very limited. That's why I think foodies around here are excited about Safari. Agree, not 5 stars, I've been at several true 5 stars. Just a great place to go eat and experience something truly different. You have never eaten this food before unless you have actually been to Africa. If you are ever in Kaiserslautern, Germany this is one place you really need to visit. The food is more than enough to feed a group of whatever you bring, I would call ahead though if you have more than 4 people in your party. The first thing to not is the flavored beer. They are fun and interesting but they are not African. The banana beer is the best but I had the passion fruit beer just to try something different. The flavor was strong and very citric, so it didn't go well with the food but it was still interesting to drink it out of a bowl, which is the only beer that you drink out of a bowl the rest of the beers are served in a glass so you're good. On to the food...Everything is good! I arrived with a party of 16 and we tried so many different dishes that not one person had a complaint. The prices may seem high to you but these dishes are not made for one person and you're not getting one meat with every dish unless you specifically order one thing, but why would you do that here? Me and friend went half on combination plate #24 "Keren." This plate has item #6, #10, #12, and #9 in it which is amazing for about $24. The flavor of the rice was perfect, it was almost like curry rice. Then the meats, they were all tender and full of flavor. If you are worried about there being enough food on the plate, don't worry because the portion was like two full plates of food. The chicken was a little spice, the lamb was tender and almost tasted like ground beef, but extremely tender. You don't use silver wear for this food, you have to eat with this wrap that looks like it would fill you up but it doesn't. You get plenty of wraps to grab your food and eat with. The wraps are like eating with crepes, but it's not sweet, its just like a plain crepe that allows you to eat the dishes. I can't explain exactly the flavors in words but your taste buds will not be disappointed if you like curry and slightly spicy food. One amazing thing that we were all surprised about is that the service was right on time and it didn't take long for all our dishes to arrive. The atmosphere was like a safari (of course) and the people were very friendly and helpful to recommend dishes. They speak German and English so as Americans we felt welcomed. On the wall, they have a slide show of images from Africa which was very interesting to watch while we waited and it helped the time go by. I highly recommend this restaurant for the food and the experience because you really do get your money's worth and you really do experience something different. Another thing that is great...NO CELL SERVICE. You really get to take a break from the outside world for moment and enjoy the meal. So go ahead and try it, just make sure to bring plenty of friends. read more

I am happy to give Safari five stars. I feel like all ratings should be taken with a grain of salt and never at face value, but, gentle reader, Safari makes my heart (and my stomach) happy. Do you ever eat something that leaves you with a flavor memory so vivid that you hold it up as the standard for future food? Safari is this for me. True, I have never had Ethiopian food, but I have had enough variety in my life to feel like my rating of the flavor profiles here is fair. I've heard that the Ethiopian place in Frankfurt is better, and, maybe after dining there, I will realize that Safari was an inferior product, but at this moment, I can feel my mouth watering remember the food I've been fortunate enough to enjoy here. The injera bread, which you use to eat everything on your plate (I know they *have* forks, but I cannot fathom why anyone would want to use one) is sour and solid without being dense. It is also plentiful, but the advise I would give is try not to eat too much of the plate of untouched rolled injera they bring you, rather get to the injera soaked in the spices and juices of the food you're eating...they line the plates of food with it and that, my friends, is what all plates in heaven must be made of. The lamb is spicy chunks of meat so amazing I'm willing to forget the fluffy face that used to be attached to it and just bask. The lentils have converted me...I was once a lentil hater...now it's a love affair. The chicken with eggs is good and the beef is lovely. The spiced vegetables are phenomenal. The samosas are a great start to the meal, but I find that I can do without them, knowing that I will not be able to finish the amazingness brought to me on a platter of injera. I have never left here unsatisfied. I don't mind walking three streets to my car...I can always use some exercise after ingesting enough food to feed a family of four (what can I say...I'm a fat kid at heart). And I personally love the super random music videos they play...you can request them and the dancing is so fascinating to me. I love watching the groups of men and women dance and move...I will perfect the shoulder shrug one day. Take this review as you will, gentle reader, or, better yet, go forth and taste for yourself. Still our fave. We take everyone we know (and anyone new to the area) here. If you're a vegetarian you have many options. Best deal is to request a vegetarian plate for 2, 3, even 4! Often we get the plate for 3 and it feeds our family of 5. They are super family friendly. Call for same day for reservations. If they say "no availability" ask to sit at the bar. Showing up is not the best option, but in a pinch... Try the bar or take-away. Our favorite dish is a toss-up. Definitely the SHIRO! And our family will take red and yellow lentil dishes every time. Since their opening, We have visited every other month if not sooner. And if you want to learn the recipes and buy African, Indian and mid eastern groceries and spices, they run the Asia Greenland market a few doors down ;) GREAT family and Atmosphere for entertaining or hosting an intimate dinner. read more

I find talking about ethic food the most challenging. How do you review something so foreign to what you're used to? You're dealing with flavors traditional to nothing familiar, and even customs different from the usual dining experience. Easy to say, there aren't many Ethiopian places where I'm from. How do you review that objectively? I can gloss over the food in just a few sentences. It was delicious. It was very delicious. The injera will make you question all previous meals you trudged though without it, and the blend of flavors ensures every part of your taste buds an invitation to the party. But I'm certainly not on the 5-star bandwagon, not until the overall experience can take it from good to great. I can get over parking three streets over if the service earns it, but it just doesn't. I have the feeling the 5s this place is getting over on Trip Adviser is from people so flattered by the food, they overlooked everything else about a restaurant that makes it good. Call me bitter, but just because you're in a unique niche market, doesn't excuse you from the follow-through of a top-quality restaurant. I'd say you're going to have to do better than employees on their phones and a low-res slide show on loop. read more

This is one of my favorite places in Germany/kaiserslautern/ Europe area. I should really try more of the menu but what I get(#13 and samosa) are far too goooooddd to change lol. The staff is always friendly from the very first time I came. At first the service was a little slow when the first open but now the service has gotten quicker; without compromising the food or the presentation. All in all I would recommend this for a night out with the guys, a romantic date with your girlfriend or boyfriend. The prices are great and you get such great portions also! When we got in, there were reserved plaques on every table. My family and I enjoyed this very unique restaurant. We have two small children (7&5) and we were a bit nervous the food would be "too different" for them. The Sambosa app was the spiciest item we ordered and was wonderful although it did end up being a bit spicier than my children liked.
