I finally determined why my dryer was not behaving properly, and it was time to take care of my clogged up dryer vent system. Yelp guided me to several options to consider for service, and upon reading many reviews, I decided to contact Safe Dryers. I contacted them rather late on a Friday afternoon, but they promptly texted me back, and got me on their calendar. Saul and his colleague arrived at the scheduled time, and got to work. They vacuumed out a pile of lint, and exclaimed at the amount in such a short dryer vent :). They measured the airflow, and explained to me what the ideal airflow is, what mine was at the start, and what it is now. They answered every question that I had about the state of the system and how I should maintain it going forward. They were efficient and cordial. What else can I expect? I'd like to point out that Safe Dryers wasn't the first company I called. The company, which was referred by my appliance repair folks, wanted to come to "inspect" my system for a low fee, and then "assess" what needed to be done and provide an estimate on site. When I asked how much it would cost to clean the vent, which I knew needed to be done, this other company would not answer that question. They insisted on a $69 visit to provide that assessment and cost. Safe Dryers had a simple answer--$169 for a ground level vent, $259 for something 10' off the ground or more. I'm sure if Saul and his team found something amiss while they were here, they would have told me about it, but all I needed was that vent cleaning, and that is what I got. A bargain at $169. After getting a new washer/dryer, we discovered that the hose of the dryer hadn't been sealed correctly. There was lent all over the place and the hose was hanging on by a thread. Saul had come out to clean the vent back in July so I called him to ask what might have happened and if he'd noticed anything at the time. He came out the next day to evaluate and remedy the situation. He was very thorough, replaced the tubing and cleaned the lent mess, all free of charge! He apologized for the oversight (it was difficult to see that the metal attaching to the tubing had been warped and was therefore not fitting correctly). He not only took accountability but was very timely and respectful in his approach. This kind of high-quality customer service is very rare these days and it was much appreciated! If you're having dryer concerns this is the company you should call. We were worried our dryer vent was obstructed and got quotes from all different vent companies for an inspection and cleaning. We ultimately decided to go with Safe Dryer. Saul was very responsive and worked with our schedule. He arrived promptly and was very friendly and knowledgeable. There was no blockage so he changed the charge accordingly. He told us what to look for in the future if we were worried about drying efficiency and went so far as to tell us approximately what pages we could find the dryer test in our manual! Better call Saul! Shout out to Safe Dryers, 303-593-0698. Here's the short version if you don't want to read the full story: Started out well: (easy to schedule), went well: (fixed my issues,) ended well: (no add on price games). Saul did what he said he would do, when he said he would do it. Long version and suggested reading, since this might apply to you: a couple days ago, I smelled something burning while running our dryer. I turned it off immediately, (thank goodness we were home!). Called a repair guy. He came out, he showed me where the heating element had warped and shorted out. He explained this type of thing can be caused by backed up lint. So, called Saul at Safe Dryers. He thoroughly cleaned the ductwork from the wall at the dryer, replaced the flex duct that runs from dryer to wall. But here's the part you need to pay attention to: we had our roof redone after the hail storm a while back, and the roofers replaced all the roof jacks, including the one that vents the dryer. Now, a lot of homes don't vent dryers thru the roof, but our does. So, the crew apparently was not informed to remove the screen from the jack, (which actually is the code for dryer roof vents.) Here's the code:: Exhaust termination shall be equipped with a backdraft damper, and screens shall not be installed at duct termination (IRC M1502.3)." So, as you can see in the pictures, the vent was completely blocked. Hence the fire hazard, and the narrowly averted disaster. My dryer repair bill, which will top $400, was likely caused by the failure of the roofing company to comply with code. I now have been told by both the appliance repair person and Safe Dryers, that this is not uncommon at all, in fact, they see it every day. The picture I attached shows the standard roof jack, with screen intact, which is fine for venting bathrooms, etc, but NOT for your dryer, because, as you can see from the pictures I took of the screen after Saul removed it, it is completely clogged with lint. It's imperative to REMOVE the screen from the jack if its for a dryer vent, as it becomes a fire hazard pretty darn quick when it blocks up. So, Saul, at Safe Dryers, checks this from the ground with binoc's to see if he sees a screen and the resultant blocked lint, which in our case, pretty much almost caused a fire. Then he removed it. Flatirons Duct Cleaning, just had them out to my house and gotta say, have never had a company turn down a $500-$600 job for the sake of honesty and integrity. They took a look and said that the little bit of dirt in my ducts could be reached with a shopvac. They'd be happy to vacuum out my whole system if I insisted but it would be a waste of my money and just keep up with my filter changes. I knew the previous owners kept up well on the maintenance of the house so I didn't have huge concerns, I thought of this as basically something you should just have done to be on the safe side when moving into a new home. I read a ton of reviews on different companies and blog posts about the process in general. In our last house I just had it done automatically before we moved in, that company (don't remember the name) didn't even assess the situation, just came and did the work and billed me. Before doing some research I didn't realize that it was even a controversial thing but it makes sense that if you are maintaining your furnace and filters, there shouldn't really be any build up in your ducts. They showed me a picture inside a duct to convince me that the ducts were already clean. I dismissed them. I didn't pay them. When Saul went to the side of our townhome to check the vent, he came back shortly to show me that the vent didn't need cleaning at all- the landscapers had accidentally blocked the airflow with a ground cable, which had pinned the flap closed when it got stuck under the vent hood. I found them from Yelp, and was a little skeptical because they had sooo many 5-star reviews (I thought maybe they weren't all genuine), but it turns out these guys really are very honest and helpful. I moved into my house about a year ago; it's about 75 years old and I'm not sure if the previous owner kept up with general maintenance so I thought I should have the ducts cleaned just in case. They came by the house today for a scheduled appointment and arrived a few minutes early. They checked out my furnace and the vents in my house and actually recommended that I they shouldn't clean the ducts. They identified a few potential issues that might have resulted in their duct cleaning making things worse rather than better; and they looked at the ducts themselves and the air filter and said that everything looked pretty clean. Getting the ducts cleaned was the finishing touch on a deep renovation of a Rental House From Hell in Boulder. I'd never had ducts cleaned but Saul came out and took photos of incredible stinky "garbage" in my house's ducts, convincing me to spring for the job. When the guys came out they took more pictures -- cobwebs, dust, construction debris, candy wrappers, small trinkets, many unidentifiable objects, and, you probably guessed it, marijuana paraphernalia. They said our ducts were the worst of any job they had ever encountered. Yuck! An hour and a half later their high-suction machine had sucked all that garbage out, and they took a bunch of "after" pix.
