I recently adopted a dog from SafeHaven after buying a house a few months ago. I had been looking for a while and finally found the perfect match on their site. I found him the same day he got to the shelter and convinced my partner to go meet him with me. We got there about half an hour before they closed on a Sunday and they let us stay with him in a room until half an hour after closing. We spent time with him in the yard even though it was raining, and when he was apprehensive we went inside and he came right to me. The person who was working with us offered some treats for us to give him and checked in on us every once in a while, giving us privacy to just be with him and talk together. When we left I knew he was the dog for us. I talked to my partner and convinced him, and the next day we called and placed a hold on the boy we had visited with. We showed up about an hour later and went through the adoption process. It took about half an hour and included a detailed explanation of his file, his medical records, and what the knew about him. We filled out the adoption application, they entered the information, then took my payment. Once we paid, they brought our new family member out to us. I put the collar and leash I had for him on and we took a picture together. The staff walked him out to our car and he jumped right in. I got in with him and he put his head in my lap. He's been my shadow ever since! He's gotten more comfortable in our home every day and there have been no nasty surprises yet. The facility is super nice and looks newer. There are hoses hooked up to the walls and ceiling for easy cleaning. The dog room and hallway before it do stink of dog pee, but there's nothing you can do about that when you run an indoor shelter. There's a ton of yard space and a walking track. There's a separate room that looked like a quarantine for new arrivals (or possibly small dogs, but it looked pretty empty so my guess is quarantine) and a whole other area for cats so they don't have the stress of dog noise right next to them. There's a small room in the lobby where you can meet dogs. They have a shop you can get supplies at if you are needing stuff for your first night together. The staff are all incredibly friendly and helpful. Everyone knows the dogs and their stories and status, even the front desk folks. They clearly care about the animals that they are responsible for. The dogs seemed to be well cared-for and happy. The cat room also looked cozy, but we didn't go in so I don't know much about it. There is plenty of parking. We missed the turn the first time because our GPS told us to turn later, but looking back it should have been obvious because they had street signs pointing to the humane society. Just something to keep in mind if you go. If you're on the fence about going here to find your next family member, do it! These people are amazing and the animals are cared for and loved. Love the new place! But, the way they have treated some of their employees/volunteers through the years is awful. There was a gal that worked there YEARS ago that loved her job. Worked hard too! Absolutely loved the animals. But, unfortunately, she had to have a serious operation done. The way they treated her after she got back was ridiculous. So, folks that know her always remember that when going in to see the animals. The animals remember people and when someone is gone that they got close to makes it hard for them too. Treat all well! Their thrift store sucks. Horrible! They reject good furniture because of no soace. However, their shelves are overflowing with utter crap like saucers, glass vases from florists, etc. Ausles are overflowing with cheap junk. Manager should be fired for allowing garbage donations and turning away quality contributions that will yield...MORE MONEY. Seriously! Have you forgotten the entire reason your thrift store exists is to raise money to help spay and neuter and feed animals needing adoption? Never again. Habitat for Humanity welcomed our furniture unhesitantly. read more

So, I lost my little girl about a month ago... woke up and she had passed in the night.. it hurt. I struggled for awhile because that was my road cat! She and I built a bond. But things happen. We cannot control life only live it. I woke up this morning feeling good, feeling great! I felt it was time to find a soul to connect with. So I stopped by. At first just to look but the closer I got the more I knew I wanted a friend. I walked in and the staff here were so welcoming! I knew I wanted another cat as I'm a cat guy. They pointed me in the right direction and I started to see the different cats here. All well taken care of, all seemed happy. I played with a few and didn't know who I was really looking for. Then one of the staff members (really wish I had gotten her name as she was sweet and vary helpful) asked me about myself. Asked me what I did and who would be a good fit for me. I told her I'm a trucker. So I spend a lot of time on the road. She explained to me how older cat would have a vary rough time with this, but a kitten is probably better. She then had me follower her to my new best friend, they had him named Merlin (now darth Revan). Me and this little dude clicked! And I was instantly hooked! I got him that day!! The staff here is so welcoming, so happy and so helpful! We all want love! And we all want someone happy to just be around us! This is where you need to go! Come find not only a companion but a soul who happy to just be in your space! The staff will help you! They are kind... and these days that's hard to come by! I want to thank the staff for helping me find Revan! Just one day together and he's already made me so happy! Thank each and everyone who works here, donates here, or adopts here!! My family and I had adopted a 9 month old puppy back in January and he's gotten along very well with other animals and people. I was very happy to take him home with us, as our last dog had passed of old age the prior year. My husband and I had such a good experience with the adoption process the first time that we decided to get another dog over this past weekend. Unfortunately, the dog we met and took home was nothing like how she was at the shelter. She was a bit timid but very comfortable around our dog and they played quite well together. When we brought her home, she was so flighty and nervous that she wouldn't even let us go within five feet of her. I was able to calm her down a bit by incentives with treats, but that was a bandaid to the situation. My husband took her to the dog park to have the dogs play together and she slipped her collar and bolted once the gate was open. Overall I don't believe we received the right information on this dog, she seems to have some type of history with extreme abuse and I found it to be misleading how she interacted when we met her versus being home. I'm sad to say we still have not found her even with having the microchip. read more

We spent a long time researching local rescues and watching pages for pups compatible with our corgi mix. Safe Haven had a few dogs in we thought would do well, placed a hold on the one we were most interested in, and went down. The staff was helpful and patient discussing the temperament of each dog with us. When we did meet-and-greets, the staff were knowledgeable and ensured a safe encounter with our corgi mix. After we chose a dog, they were happy to share what they knew about her past as well as her behavior since being in their facilities. The facilities were clean, the adoption process was simple, and the staff was excellent. Safe Haven will be our first stop if we decide to bring in more fur babies! read more

It pains me to leave a review like this but I want people to be aware of what happened today, August 31st, 2022. While browsing a few different facilities while on my adoption search, I found exactly what I was looking for. Tiger striped (Tabby), male, kitten (eight weeks when I adopted him on 8/2/22), and was actually in surgery being neutered the day I drove up to see him. I wish I had been told that the day before when I emailed SafeHaven to let them know I was interested and would drive up from Eugene the following day. I arrived prior to noon and waited outside with a couple of other folks. We chatted, shared stories, and had a pleasant time conversing. We all went in at noon. Once I entered the cat area, I was helped immediately by a young guy and gal (I wish I had their names). They were super friendly! Since Kenneth was in surgery, I drove over to Corvallis and wasted time until it was time to head back on over to SafeHaven. The adoption process was very easy. Sierra was wonderful! Conversed with some other folks in the waiting area. I adopted, Kenneth. However, I picked out the name Rex and let folks know. After several different training approaches, I was not able to find success. It wasn't fair to Rex or myself to stick it out together any longer. My health has suffered a lot over the past week. There were a couple of other times that I emailed SafeHaven about surrendering Rex, but stuck it out to try a couple of other things. As stated, those were unsuccessful. I emailed SafeHaven twice over the past weekend (their intake department is closed on the weekends), and a dear friend of mine from out of stated called and emailed on my behalf yesterday (8/30/22). Tami called me and she was very kind. She scheduled my surrendering of Rex for today (8/31/22) at 1:30pm. I was early. She was very kind again and wished me well and off I went knowing I had made the right decision. Rex deserves much more than I can provide. I drove home, cleaned up my place and then went onto the website. I almost couldn't believe my eyes! The entire month with me was erased! His name was kept as KENNETH!!!! He was answering to the name I gave him, Rex!! Now, they will confuse the little guy! I know the next owner would most likely have changed his name from Rex to another name. I understand that, but SafeHaven was obligated to document everything as stated on my paperwork. They didn't! So ticked off right now! Won't ever be back and will never recommend them to anybody! Sad because I was very impressed up until arriving home today and seeing the website. read more

we got are doggy Leanard a few years ago and he is just a little love bunny. he had been returned to them twice and he just didn't have the right people with the right fit.. Yes this does happen.. I have meet other people who have gotten animals from SafeHaven and they have nothing but good things to say. the place is very clean and the animals are so calm and it has a great vibe .. there are other places that are just so hard to go into. hope this helps someone, if nothing else go check them out. also they are on line. read more

We adopted our sweet kitty from SafeHaven and it's made our lives so much better and we feel more fulfilled on a regular basis. After I lost my 13 year old cat 2 years ago, I never thought I would fill that void again. We were able to find our perfect little man here and he was cared for beautifully. We went and adopted a puppy 6 months old and received all paperwork showing she was fixed and had all her shots which was also verified by signature on the adoption paperwork. Well our dog is in heat so we have an appt with our vet to have her fixed and had to pay to get her rabies and neccessary shots. I've contacted this company twice and spoke to the gentleman manager and they refuse to do anything. So not only are we out the $371.00 we are out $530.00 to get everything done that was FRAUDULENTLY stated on paperwork showing ALL completed with employee verification. My vet said "they knew what they were doing since a female always has a scar underbelly and she does not". Fraud is Fraud no matter how you look at it. I'm contacting the U.S. Veterinarian company that oversees ALL Vets in the U.S. and filing a complaint with the paperwork proving it. PEOPLE PLEASE BEWARE AND DO NOT TRUST THIS PLACES PAPERWORK, ITS FRAUDULANT!!!! read more

I adopted a young kitty from this shelter. Within the week, he ran away, popped the window screen and ran. Months later someone found him and rightfully returned him to the shelter. The shelter accused me of abusing the animal and threatened to call animal control on me with absolutely no evidence nor any questions asked. This place is all drama and they feed off of it. They said he was "almost dead", the next day I picked him up he was meowing at me and running around every time I fed him and spent time with him. It's extremely inappropriate to dramatize an animal's condition in order for a response. Extremely disappointed in this shelter and their morals. Absolutely immature and disgusting of a human to do that to someone who was putting food out nightly and had a shelter in hopes that the cat would come back. read more

If you're looking to be scammed and deceived well then SafeHaven is the place to go. Extremely pushy to make a choice and also very pushy to have you place dogs on hold when the fee is nonrefundable and doesn't go toward an adoption fee. We adopted a dog over a month ago and we were told 'we don't know much about her'. I asked multiple times about how she does with other dogs or cats and they said as long as another dog isn't mounting her she should be fine. At the time I had a immunocompromised hospice dog at home and a special needs senior dog and a young cat. With two practically immobile dogs at home I felt like it would be ok as neither would be mounting her. We adopted her the next day. I was told 3 times when I was signing papers that she had been adopted and returned within a day but not because of her but because of the owners health. She also had some minor medical issues that they made me feel were being addressed and would be done after she was given her two weeks of medications. 3 days after adopting her she started to bleed vaginally. I called and spoke with medical and they had a whole lot more information to tell me about her history both medically and socially. They never said a word when I was going through the adoption. She had been adopted and returned before because she didn't get along with dogs which I had asked multiple times about. She had a possible skin infection that wasn't treated but was noticed at the shelter. She had also been exposed to kennel cough for 14 hours on her way up from California which she did end up developing and gave to my hospice dog. My vet says she will need lifelong medical care and treatment for her ears and hernias. She will also need lifelong treatment for her skin. All of this should have been told to us before we adopted her. I called to return her and then changed my mind overnight and left a not so nice voicemail. That led to the assistant director reaching out asking to discuss the situation. Well I left a voicemail to discuss and I responded to her email in detail and I have still not heard back from her. This place is an absolute atrocity and does such a disservice to these animals and the people adopting. Don't let the nice facility fool you.. it's paid for by the adoption fees when an animal continues to get brought back over and over and they keep racking up the $$$ because they withhold vital information. From talking to people around town it doesn't sound like I am the only one. Rescuing is great but go elsewhere. read more

Outstanding example of an animal shelter that truly cares about the pets. SafeHaven is a "no-kill" shelter, serving primarily dogs and cats, but also has other small animals, i.e. Rabbits and Guinea Pigs from time-to-time. Also offers classroom instruction and has various programs for kids, such as day camps during vacation periods. Active volunteer staff, but difficult to comply with all of the little nuances they insist on, including volunteer having to buy leashes, and clothing. Our family used to do a lot of volunteering here, but finally decided to devote our volunteer time at other places. We loved working with the animals, but frankly, the hassle of doing it became too much. That said, we would still go and adopt a pet here, and strongly hope you will consider doing the same...the pets need you!!! read more

I really hate to do this, but I am going to. I went to SafeHaven because they had a dog posted online that we were interested in. My first impression was very positive. It's a nice facility. The people seemed ok at first. I told them which dog I wanted to meet with, and they made that happen. I understand that they can't always get background info on dogs that come into a shelter, but they should be able to tell you whether or not a dog is a threat to children, other dogs, or cats. There is such a thing as temperament testing, and it would appear that they don't do it there. I asked basic questions about the dog (i.e. How is he with kids/cats? Any prior training?), and the woman who helped us seemed irritated with my questions, and she did not have answers. I asked if it was possible, should I adopt the dog, to pick him up at the end of the day (Was on my lunch break), and I was told that because there was another person there to meet him that they couldn't do a "hold". She seemed even more irritated when I asked if I could have a few minutes with him. I realize that you don't want to keep people waiting, but I feel it's extremely messed up to try to force someone to make a life decision that will effect your family for the next 10-15 years in 5 minutes with no relevant info. They seem to have no interest in making sure that an animal is compatible with your home/family/lifestyle. Great dog, but the pressure of the situation made me walk away. As soon as I hesitated, they just got rude. I realize that they're not in the "customer service" game, but I feel the that they operate is just irresponsible. read more

Safehaven seems to be only out to get your money. They dont care about whether it will be a good fit for you or the animal and are extremely unsupportive if things go wrong. I was a first time dog owner and when I was making my decision about adopting a dog, I was extremely candid about my living situation, lack of experience with dogs, and the type of dog I was looking for. I met a dog who was labeled as a puppy. He was super calm and responsive and didnt bark at all or show any "classic puppy behaviors." He had his adult teeth and multiple staff told me they thought the reason for his calm behavior was that he was probably older than the age his information said (closer to a year than 5 months). I asked if they thought this dog would be a good fit for me given all my criteria and was told yes and encouraged to adopt. That night, he was up all night destroying things, proving he wasn't potty trained and running for hours all over my apartment, wanting to play. I told myself he was just settling in and would calm down again like he was at the shelter. He didnt. The next morning we went to the dog park for 45 minutes, and played in the yard for another 2 hours and he still had too much energy. He showed he had extreme separation anxiety and would freak out if I even tried to take a shower. Going to work that night seemed impossible. This all added up to be extremely overwhelming for me as this was not the calm, well mannered dog I thought I had adopted. My mom, not the staff, suggested that the medication from his surgery less than 24 hours before I had adopted him had probably worn off and it wasn't a misinterpretation of his age, but the sedation meds leaving his system causing the extreme change in behavior. That afternoon, I made the tough decision to bring him back to safe haven. I knew it just wasnt a good fit and he needed a family who could take turns caring for him and help him get out all that energy, something I couldnt do by myself. So, I took him back to the shelter, crying the whole way. I was devestated and unsure about how things had gone so wrong when I was so honest about what kind of dog I was looking for and went in with the very best intentions and planned to provide a forever home for a dog. I had hoped that the staff would be supportive of the situation but instead, the supervisior said many hurtful things things like, "a dog isnt just a pair of shoes you can try on and then take back" and "we only give refunds when theres a problem with the dog, and it sounds like its a problem with the owner." I inquired about a voucher instead of a money refund to adopt a different animal at a future date that would be a better fit for me and the animal and was told that wasnt possible. I feel pretty swindled and like their adoption practice is unethical due to them selling me a dog that was recovering from surgery and sedation meds less than 24 hours prior. Multiple staff repeated that they were currently over populated and struggling to keep up with the new intakes. It seemed like they were focusing on just getting rid of as many animals as fast as possible for the money rather than making sure that theyre going to the best homes for both dog and owner. I won't be adopting here again and, after this heartbreaking experience, I dont know if I'll ever be able to adopt a dog again, or adopt at all. I paid for a service and instead got poor information and drugged dog with multiple issues. Really, really disappointed. read more
