I see some negative reviews from a while ago but my experience has been nothing but amazing. I've adopted both of my cats from here and they're the sweetest loving happy and health lives. Adopted them and they were up to date on shots, seemed healthy, and were neutered. I got my first cat from here as a kitten over a year and a half ago and got my other cat about 6 months ago. Whenever I'm visited too I've had nothing but good experiences. read more

I am truly shocked by the previous reviews. I adopted my two kitties from this place about two years ago and it seriously was the best decision of my life. These little babies of mine are sweet, funny, playful additions. Heartland is a wonderful facility. I have always found it to be super clean and very loving towards their animals. If I could I would adopt at least three more kitties and maybe a dog or two, ha! I got my kitties through a special they were having in the fall. I believe it was two kitties for $50.00 with their vaccinations. I couldn't pass it up! They also got their first vet visit for free but mind you the vet will try haggling you to pay for additional vaccinations and what not. read more

At first, I was weary of adopting here. I had had a very bad experience with Safe Haven, the other humane society in the area, and was worried I would have a similar one here. However, I'm happy to report that these guys were great! I was able to put a kitten on hold and they offered to be flexible and said to just give them a phone call if something came up and I couldnt get her within the time frame. When I adopted the kitten, they went through all the paperwork with me(lots of coupons!), recommended vets in the area (you get a free vet visit within 10 days of adoption), and thoroughly answered all my questions. They also gave me a collar with tags and a cardboard carrier to get her home in with a towel lining the bottom. I struggled with the little plinko board but after a few tries ended up winning 50% off my adoption fees! I also noticed that a few of the older cats had been there a long time which, although sad they hadn't been adopted, I was glad to see they were there and hadnt been euthanized. The dogs did seem really stressed out and barked aggressively but I imagine thats the high stress environment. If you're thinking of adopting a cat from here, I definitely recommend! read more

My boyfriend and I decided to get a cat from here and it was the best decision ever! We couldn't adopt our Walter the day we met him because we needed to get some stuff ready for him at home so they worked with us to make sure that he would still be available the next day so we could adopt him. The Staff were so nice and helpful and answered all of my questions. The staff are all so caring and helpful! I definitely recommend going here if you are looking to adopt an animal. read more

After a very emotional loss, we began the search for a new kitten. I called Heartland Humane, and they were everything but... I left several phone messages, and I never received a reply. I finally reached someone on the phone, and was told their appointments were booked out for weeks. Weeks??? We wanted to look at several of their current kittens, and I asked the staff member if it was possible to call a supervisor to approve an earlier appointment time. "I'm only an employee," came the reply. These are living creatures, and perhaps a little more heart is needed to understand that fact. She was short, obviously bored with my queries, and did nothing to help in an emotional time. Head to Roseburg where they understand animal companions. read more

We just adopted a kitten from here. Kitty seemed skinny, and was a little sneezy, but we had no idea how fast he was deteriorating. Took him to the vet today and she said "this kitten should never have been adopted out" due to what she felt was very obvious illness. His prognosis isn't good, and I'm now doing what I can at home with medications and seclusion to help him recover. She said he was a hospitalization candidate. :( I suspected something when, the day after we reserved him, on his neuter day, when I checked online and he was posted, and only one of his sisters was, too. Where is sister #2? I sensed she died, and now I'm fairly sure. No one told us the next day when we went to adopt him and bring him home. I hope he isn't dying. We have had him five days, and my young children are attached. They were so concerned with making $90 off of us that they withheld pertinent health information. read more

This humane society is much smaller than the Salem one, but it's a smaller town so that's to be expected. It has just about the same stuff--dogs, cats, rodents--as any other place, but the building is a little fancier. Super bonus though: they're located right next to a creek so if you're lucky you'll see a nutria hanging around outside. No cage, so watch those fingers! read more

Eeek, I don't know what happened with some of the reviews here a few years ago--it sounds like a violent person was on staff, and I hope they are gone. Having worked for a non-profit myself, sometimes bad apples get in and do crazy stuff like yell and scream and hit people or objects. I hope that person is gone I have never adopted an animal from Heartland, but I looked at several dogs in an attempt to find a potential service dog for myself. I wasn't able to due to them having mostly older dogs, and I needed a younger one, which is fine, they are a small facility and it's just what happens a lot. Had I just been looking for a companion, I wouldn't have minded a senior dog. I also didn't have all my paperwork in order at first and had to find a dog that would get along with my cat, etc etc....in any case, no matter how many times I came in and left without a dog, they were always courteous and as knowledgeable as they could be about the dogs. They told me everything they knew about their background, temperament, etc, and told me what they DIDN'T know, which was important. I also like the funny names they give the different sections of the shelter and the names of the cats that are puns. Ha! read more

Love the cat rooms! Especially during kitten season! The staff is understanding and it's a welcoming environment for volunteers. I have been to some of their adoption events and was pleased to know how well the staff knew each animal so well. Just be sure to get all the information about your potential new friend, they may still need to get "fixed" or be on a special diet if they are rescues. But overall, you can definitely find your new friend here and remember they all want forever homes! read more

I always love to visit these place and visit the animals there. However, the reason why I rated one star is because of how the staff there have treated me. I had went there a couple of times just to visit the animals but today I met this cat and I immediately fall I love with it. He is so nice and I want to take it home with me to care. But when I was filling out application with my boyfriend, a staff came up to me and stop me. Saying that they have some kind of policy involving no to give out application to foreigners. Obviously she's not letting me adopt the cat and wanting to shred my application. She was so rude and really broke my heart. I just don't understanding why can't I adapt him home.. just because I'm international student?! If I adopt it I will take it to my home country even I left the US. They should have a better training to their staff for not to treat people like that! That's racist and discrimination of my race and nationality! read more

I brought my dog here thinking that it was a no kill shelter due to financial trouble and they told me that they have to kill her because she growls at strangers... I'm sorry but she's a dog?? I was heart broken.. I thought they'd have a heart or care about the animal but come to find out they don't have a trainer or anyone to work with the dogs so if the dog has the slightest problem don't take them there they will kill your animal and give you no other option unless you take it home but in my case I was being the wanted on eviction. This place gets a one star review, because it is absolutely mind blowing that the only animal control center in Corvallis is closed two days a week, and doesn't have an after hours line. What is the point of being animal control if you're not even going to be available outside of business hours five days a week?? Seriously. I called about a stray puppy that was running around a very busy street, and was so stressed and scared you couldn't get near it. The human society was closed the day I called, so I was unable to get help for this poor puppy. read more

DO NOT ADOPT !!!! Years ago I had two cats I got from my grandfather as a birthday gift. When I moved to Corvallis the cats got out... They had collars and tags. We called this shelter and they told us that they did not have any new cats. They sounded fishy on the phone so my grandfather stopped by the place to see my two cats locked in a cage. They told us that they were clearly strays, and would not give them back to us. Again these cats had tags and were very healthy. Our cats were on hold for someone else and we had to beg them to give us our cats back. THEY MADE US BUY A CATS BACK. WE HAD TO BUY OUR OWN CATS TO TAKE THEM HOME!!! It was so messed up. The whole process took five days. I hate the staff, very rude and ride on a high horse. Acting like they a saints saving animals from cruel family. read more

I adopted my cat Boris (Now Captain Boris to you lot) in June. Heartland followed up that I could have him with my landlord, which is great as this likely prevents adoption-immediate surrenders. The whole facility appears very clean and well lit in the main animal areas. Custimized tags on each kennel let you know just who you're looking at--and in cat play rooms you can ask the volunteers who is who. The dog area can be very loud, but that's because there's, you know, dogs there. What a concept! The staff, while friendly, can get very busy at times and you may need to wait a few minutes for one on one attention. They are all very in tune with a lot of the animals and can tell you a lot about their personalities. If you're looking to volunteer they are also very helpful with start up information and requirements. The volunteers were very honest that Boris probably had allergies of some sort, as well as an over-grooming problem (he was basically giving himself a bikini wax, which was both awkward and adorable). He was well documented on his veterinary care and shots, and there was no problem with getting the vet to take his free exam visit. Boris was extremely shy when I first met him, to the point of refusing to budge in his kennel when I opened it up to see him. His vet and I both believe this was because of stress--Boris is very much a cat who needed a single-cat house. These days I just about can't keep him off me. Moral of that story is: don't adopt the first cat that cuddles you--That's what cats do. Heartland has dozens of animals on any given day, take some time to get to know the shy ones because they're there to find homes just as much as the gregarious ones. read more

We were all set to adopt a dog from here, but when the day finally came (after getting super excited about bringing this dog home) we were told about health problems that we can't afford to treat. While I'm thankful they told us this before we actually brought her home, I was crushed by the realization that we couldn't afford to take care of her, especially because we had asked repeatedly if she had any medical conditions. We were told she had plaque but it was removed. We later found out she has stage 3 gum disease (which they had in their records but didn't disclose to us when we applied for adoption). Apparently they expected us to know this because she had a dental cleaning, which isn't routine for dogs in shelters. We did not know that. What was supposed to be one of the best days of my life quickly became a sad, tear-filled day. They absolutely need better training for their staff in terms of reviewing records and communicating honestly with potential adopters. Every time I go here, I come out with at least one pet. We got all my cats and my dog here and they are the most adorable pets I have ever seen. I've gotten pets of all ages and all of my pets are well behaved. It feels good to give a new home to these pets. read more

if i could zero stars i Would UPDATE: So I went back to the humane society as i moved and did not rent anymore. As my bff's inherited a rescue that she needed help with. We adopted an adorable doggies, his name is choco chi. We had him from a little under a week. before adopting or signing anything we asked if he had ALL his shots and everything as we have a lot of animals and did not want any of them to get sick. We took him to the vet because of the free examination and that he was throwing up. He was such a good doggie for us but he had the doggy flu which is treatable but we have a lot of other animals that need homes and we didn't get him to be sick or for our rescue. He was suppose to be our personal dog. We had to fight with the humane society because he is sick and we are thinking of our other animals. I was going to visit family for the holidays and my roommate has a little girl who was having surgery. we had a dog sitter but was not willing to get their other animals to get sick since she has pregnant sugar gliders. This sickness could of been prevented if he was given the proper vaccines. I do not trust this rescue as this is the second bad experience. They do not vaccinate right and do not follow their own contract as they put, THIS ANIMAL IS UP TO DATE ON VACCINES. read more

I am a student who needs an ESA for my anxiety and depression. I had a cat on hold here while trying to work with my school to get approval to house the cat with me. The people who worked here would not budge to give me the information I needed on the cat and allowed another family to adopt her while I was waiting for my school's approval to go through. They were rude, unhelpful, and straight up lied to me. read more

This place is the best as they helped me save a very precious life. Houdini is doing fine in foster care and will son be up for adoption with her siblings who are Tygie, Spot and Trouble. All are all aptly named and v on the 19th will be 3 months old. The staff were all friendly to me, and nothing but good to say. read more

I've visited this shelter on a number of occasions and with all animal shelters it is a heart breaking experience, but the shelter does its utmost for the animals under its care and the staff genuinely are there to help. It is to be commended on what it does and the manner in which it goes about providing for the animals that end up there. Bravo to them. read more

We have adopted 2 cats here (12 years apart) and found Heartland to be wonderful. The people really know animals, helping to match personalities and investigating past history as much as possible. adoption fees are reasonable. The shelter is always very clean. It is noisy in the dog area. Could use some soundproofing material in the upper area of the dog area (there are high ceilings so it wouldn't be a cleaning issue.) read more
