Oh man, I could write a whole novel about how much I loved my experience…read more Horizons has given me the tools to grow my skills and passion for technology and entrepreneurship in a way that I never anticipated. The summer of learning cutting-edge web/mobile dev, networking with amazing companies and fellow Horizonites, and bonding in a community of amazing students with like-minded interests (who have also gone on to intern at the best tech companies because of Horizons) gave me a solid leg-up in my tech career. Because of the amazing things you build (replicas of Facebook, Yelp, Trello, are just among a few of the projects you build each week) and the extremely talented and brilliant instructors, you'll come out of this school feeling like you learned more in 2 months than you've ever learned in college. Seriously, once I started recruiting for a software engineering internship, I realized that because of Horizons, I not only was getting way more interest from companies than my peers, but also I was much more prepared for the technical interviews. It was in large part because of what I learned and built at Horizons that I have now gone on as a software engineering summer intern at a Fortune 500 company and have also transferred from my liberal arts college to Northwestern's engineering school for CS. Mainly, the network you build for both life and entrepreneurial ventures is invaluable. I have met lifelong friends and potential startup co-founders and out in the tech world at recruiting events, I have realized that Horizons alumni look out for one another and are proud of their shared experience at Horizons. Also, the co-founders Abhi and Darwish are some of the kindest and most caring people I have ever met. Abhi has mentored me continuously (whenever I reach out to him, he always finds time to talk with me), and I have even asked him to my school to give a talk because he has so much to offer in terms of solid career advice. Abhi and Darwish are very good people who work very hard (they're always the last to leave the building because they're so dedicated to Horizons), and how they manage to maintain mentoring Horizonites while simulatenously keeping Horizons so efficient and productive is beyond me. This has truly been a cornerstone experience of my life and education, and I can't recommend Horizons highly enough to anyone who is interested in entrepreneuship, learning web/mobile dev, or just want to stand out and get a leg up on technical internships/jobs. But going through such an intense three months gave me great personal and career development. One thing that's special about doing a bootcamp is that as a business student, you can come out the program knowing the same, if not more, about software development as a CS major does. The breadth of material taught me to think about things as specific as a complex sorting algorithm to as broad as architecting a full stack application. And the best part is that the technical skills I learned were just a starting point. I can't believe how far I've come in the year since I did Horizons in my personal and work projects. Besides the obvious programming knowledge that comes with a bootcamp, I think the thing that sticks out the most about Horizons is that their people genuinely care about each student. When I looked at a problem with little hope of solving it, the TAs patiently encouraged me to think about it dynamically until I reached a solution. Knowing the cohort wanted to learn about more than building, the team networked hard to get us speakers that spoke openly with us about their careers and experiences. Months after the program ended, I received support and advice from the founders themselves during recruiting season. Horizons has been the true foot in the tech door I always wanted and badly needed. I went to VFMA back in the late 80s for my junior year (11th grade) and I can only describe this place as a torture chamber. From bullying and physical abuse to mental abuse it was all the norm there. This place was a hair away from Lord of the Flies. Any parent who decides to send their kid here should have their head examined, if you have read Lord of the Flies that really demonstrates how this place was. The bullying was off the charts, some of the stuff I witnessed there still haunts me to this day. While this is based on my experiences a very long time ago I can see from the more recent reviews and the article in Mother Jones in 2022 called "Hazing, Fighting, Sexual Assaults: How Valley Forge Military Academy Devolved Into 'Lord of the Flies'" that absolutely nothing has changed. To this day in my 50s I still have horrible feelings about this place and to add insult to injury the quality of education was absolutely terrible. Despite their promises of delicious and satisfying meals, the reality was quite different. The food at Valley Forge Military Academy and College fell far short of what was portrayed. Not only was it unappetizing, but it often lacked nutritional value, leaving me feeling unsatisfied and lethargic, I ended up losing all the muscle I came with. And when cadets didn't want to eat the food, they would ask to order food instead but yet most of the time we're rejected of that request and we're left starving that whole night. Asking around other cadets for snacks. So they didn't have to goto sleep with a starving stomach. and I am speaking from experience. Most of my nights were like that. Moreover, the water fountains were consistently in a deplorable state. It was evident that they were dirty and contaminated, yet the authorities seemed to be fully aware of this issue. This blatant disregard for basic hygiene standards is unacceptable, especially in an educational institution. The living environment at the academy was mentally and physically exhausting, even after completing the Plebe system. It's true that the purpose of such institutions is to challenge individuals and foster personal growth, but Valley Forge Military Academy and College took it to an extreme level. Unfortunately, instead of empowering and building me up, the environment seemed to break me down even further. I struggled to communicate, find joy, and regain the happiness I had before attending the academy. Adding to my woes, the presence of water cockroaches in the Younghusband barracks was an ongoing issue. It was distressing and unhygienic to encounter these pests throughout my stay. This not only impacted my physical well-being but also added to the overall sense of discomfort and dissatisfaction. Worst of all, the negative experiences at Valley Forge Military Academy and College left me feeling isolated and disconnected. Returning home with nobody to talk to, I found it difficult to share my struggles and adjust to a "normal" life again. Instead of emerging from the academy as a better version of myself, I came out worse, with no discernible benefits or positive changes to show for my time there. Overall, Valley Forge Military Academy and College failed to live up to its promises and left me deeply disappointed. The subpar food, contaminated water fountains, mentally and physically exhausting living environment, and the presence of water cockroaches all contributed to an overall negative experience. Regrettably, instead of benefiting and changing me in a positive way, the academy left me broken and unable to regain the same level of happiness and contentment I had before attending.
