I have had nothing but a pleasant shopping experience at this Safeway and have not had some of the problems encountered by the Yelp reviewers who have left a negative critique, so I give it a three-star rating. Still, there are issues for me regarding pricing and the usage of the Safeway Club Card. Overall, Safeway's pricing, regardless of whatever is on sale or not, is overpriced when compared to similar products purchased from Shoppers Food Warehouse, Giant, and Harris Teeter. And contrary to what surveys of grocery store pricing for the region may say, Safeway's, based on what I have seen and purchased, are the highest in the Washington, DC area. In order to get the most out of the "Just for U" offerings in the weekly ad, I have to either cut out the requisite coupons or go to the Safeway website and have the coupons I plan on using "electronically uploaded" to my Safeway Club Card account. Wouldn't it be easier to just upload all of the sale/savings items for everyone who possesses a Safeway Club Card? It sure would save a lot of time by avoiding the use of scissors with the paper ad and point-click time on the Safeway website. read more

During peak times they could use more cashiers - Absolutely! I've never seen a grocery store that didn't have that problem though. Great selection for most things. Good beer and cheese options. Variety of meats. friendly butcher staff. Well organized, well lit, clean, and yeah - the healthy options are great. They have a ton of those. They also have some of the same staff for years, which to me, is an indication that they are doing something right - treating their people well enough to keep them and all. read more

Although I miss Publix A LOT, I've found a decent replacement in Safeway. The employees are always super friendly and helpful. The guy that works the self service lanes, with the curly red hair? None of the prices seems to match what is advertised, even with the Safeway card. Every available cashier is always full, and the self-check out is you know, always a pain. In terms of price, I always get out of specialty stores (like Trader Joes) spending less and with less aggravation. After reading a few reviews I was concerned about going to this store. However, after visiting, I didn't find as many complaints. This being said, it could be because I'm used to the DC lifestyle (horrid parking) and I have the luxury of staying home so there isn't really any issue with cashiers at 1:00 in the afternoon. Kingstowne is a very nice area and I felt the shopping center had plenty of parking. Besides, World Market is only two doors down. I'm happy. The reason I won't give this store 5 stars is due to Safeway's prices and not the store itself. Safeway is expensive even for DC. Went in looking for a nice New York Strip as I had in the past. Only ones available were bone in or "thin cut". Changed my mind and bought tenderloin at just under $20/ lb. Got home and discovered silver skin had not been trimmed. Called to complain--all they said was bring in the receipt. I expect more at those prices. As a post script the home trimmed steaks were delicious. Really good meat-- but their butchers need to do better. read more

First let me say when this Safeway first opened, it was wonderful. Great staff, great selections, great prices, terrific floral department. However, in the last few years, its gone downhill in a big way. I went today because the web showed there was an actual Fedex counter in the store, and I needed to drop off a package. I came to customer service counter, which is just the other end of the counter from the Fedex counter -- neither were manned and the lights were off at both ends. At the Fedex counter end, packages were thrown and piled up at every possible spot they could be, and easily accessible for me to reach over and take my pick, I might also add. I stood there and waited ... and waited .... and waited. There were about 3 cashiers open and serving customers. But no one in the customer service (or Fedex) counters! After 5-6 minutes, I decided that customer service was obviously not a priority and started to leave. At that point I heard a page overhead "Attention: customer service; attention: customer service." By that time I was almost to the door, and saw three Safeway employees coming out of Starbucks and walking toward customer service. Now, I cannot say for certain that they were staffing the customer service counter -- I suppose if I walked all the way back there I could be sure, but it looked to me like they might have been getting a cuppa while things were "quiet"? Honestly, it'll take something spectacular for me to go back there for anything -- the lack of service is amazing, whereas their attention to detail when they first opened was amazing. Now, it's a total "who cares" attitude. And I'll put a review of the Fedex counter on a separate review. My recommendation -- go to Wegman's which is just a few minutes down the road. You'll be treated like royalty there. read more

So...I have been shopping here off and on for some time here are my thoughts. STAY AWAY from the lamb especially if it comes in a green and white container and says grass fed. I bought this for a dinner party and had to take it back to the store because the musty smell was so bad. Great customer service traded flank steaks. I still tried to cook it and see if I could figure out what was wrong and literally it was so bad that I won't be able to eat lamb for some time. I also had to open the windows and use fan to try and kill the smell. All went into the trash as my hands would have smelled like the musty manure smell for the rest of the evening even if I would have picked it for the dog. The lamb was not spoiled it was older probably sheep or mutton not the good lamb you want. My husbands first time tasting and I don't think I will ever be able to get him to eat again. EVER. My guests had the flank steak.....after I spent 3 hours prepping this beautiful lamb dish. They do have meat sales but be careful with Manager specials as I have purchased these two times that were dated ok but smelled to bad to eat. They have a very clean fruit and vegetable section. Not a bunch of exotics but the regular stuff. Flowers I bought once but died in two days so no more. read more

At this point Virginia is still under "Covid-19" . This should not impact the quality of their fried chicken pieces. We had their 8 chicken pieces several times before, but never 'leathery', no taste chicken pieces. I asked the sales person if they were freshly made? She answered 'yes' . She filled the order, I held the package in my hand ... surprise : it was lukewarm. Therefore they just could not have come from the fryer! Actually they may have been heated twice, hence the leathery look and taste, bland. Buyer be aware, if the coating has fallen off the chicken piece, the piece looks tight, brown, leathery, the chance is the product is not fresh. Thanks, but no thanks. I do like Safeway, however I do like freshly made products and safe food. I also do like frozen ice cream, which I wanted to buy this day.... the ice cream display did have only few choices left (15 oz containers) and most of those were soft to the touch. ?? Placed a cake and cupcake order a week in advance to be picked up at a 1:30 on Saturday. When taking the order, the lady was very upset, the request to write my daughters name on the cupcake seemed like it was difficult for her becuase she started rolling her eyes and sighing. To make the "Babie" cake from their catalogue, we had to buy our own barbie and bring it to her. When we come to pick everything up at 2pm the day of, the baker who was supposed to complete everything wasn't even finished with the cake. When we asked about cupcakes she said "Oh, no one told me.". We pulled up the original order and the original angry lady had written them down correctly, the baker just forgot to make them. A lot of work for a bad experience. We should've gone to Wegman's, they've never messed up our order. read more

I like this Safeway I go there every morning for coffee and staff working here is always friendly clean I find things vary easy here. Located in great strip chopping center so you can walk easy to other great stores too. I alway use their dry cleaners too. It's not bad tho. One time the did not clean my white dress very good. This review only pertains to the FLORAL department at the Kingstowne Safeway. My husband and I were looking for affordable flowers for our wedding and we had heard about using the floral department at Safeway through one of our friends. We got them to do all of our bouquets/boutonnieres/corsages. 1 bridal bouquet, 4 BM bouquets, 6 groomsmen boutonnieres, 3 usher boutonnieres, 2 family corsages, and 2 family boutonnieres all for around $500--which is an unbelievable price for the area. We DIYed our reception centerpieces so we did not get those done there. We were super impressed by the quality of the bouquets--they had plenty of flowers that were fresh and withstood the entire day (even in the heat of June and in my bridal forgetfulness of putting the flowers back in the water) and they were beautifully arranged. Elizabeth picked out a set of beautiful flowers to match our idea and followed through on everything that we requested. I was astonished also by how many stems she was able to fit into my bridal bouquet. Only thing to watch out for is that because Elizabeth is really the only one that does the arrangements, they can only handle 1 wedding/day--so make sure you book early and put down a deposit. I would totally recommend to a bride on a budget! Very professional and no one would ever guess that they were from a grocery store! Also, super plus that you can use your Safeway card and rack up points for gas rewards!! I was able to get 50 cents/gallon off. What other wedding florist can offer you that? read more

This review is about the hiring process at this grocery store. I applied for a night crew clerk position. I was told I was not qualified because I do not have experience ordering, stocking, and rotating products on the shelves. I understand I am overqualified to work as a night crew clerk position considering I worked in the corporate world for more than ten years however, I am unable to find other unemployment. The recruiter will not consider you as a candidate for a job opening unless you know someone who is already working for Safeway. I do not think this company embodies fair hiring practices. read more

You know what? I typically don't like shopping at Safeway for personal reasons, but today I had an awesome experience at this particular Safeway, and I felt it warranted a review. My boyfriend and I went to stop at the deli to get some cold cuts. Let me just tell you, the woman who helped me was probably the nicest and most kind hearted person I've met! Her name was Bridgett, and I felt it warranted being mentioned. The bf and I stopped by the bakery to get rolls and it smelt SO good. Spacious aisles, good beer and wine section, hot sandwich bar, good bakery section, Starbucks, a bank, and the produce is decent quality (no farmer's market, but still good). Have always been a safeway/vons shopper. Lately whenever I go into this Safeway regardless of what time of day, they never have enough checkers. Giving the place three stars... Big variety of items to choose from. Store is very nice in appearance and has a Starbucks inside the store itself. I had no issues going through self check-out. Did not have to wait at all. My only concern is a very pungent smell of fish when one walks through the door. Perhaps this was an off day for them - - just not sure. Regardless, as a major chain with not necessarily the lowest prices, Safeway should be much better... Recommend coming here if you are in the area; however, there are other grocery store chains nearby without the fish smell. read more

I've been going to the Safeway in Kingstowne, VA for over 20 years. They have pretty flower arrangements and great bakery items. Today I stopped by there to pick up an arrangement for a family member in the hospital. While we were picking an arrangement, my son accidentally knocked an arrangement over in the case. I immediately started picking up the flowers to alert the woman at the florist desk when someone walked over and started shouting at me. I had no idea who it was until I realized it was the woman at the florist counter. She kept saying I wasn't supposed to touch anything, I was ruining her flowers, etc. i explained my son had accidentally knocked over a vase and I was trying to help by cleaning up. She kept yelling and cursing at me. I asked her to stop yelling and cursing at me. She kept interrupting, yelling and cursing. Btw, this was all in front of my son. I asked to speak with a manager. She insisted she was the manager. I asked to speak with her boss. At that point, I went to customer service. The lady there was kind and offered an arrangement for free. I have never been treated by a store employee like that my entire life. I am appalled that she would speak to anyone that way. I have many choices in the area for groceries and flowers. It will be quite some time before I go back. read more

First Safeway I have ever shopped, and I would rate it in your typical grocery store. Although their items seem to be a bit more pricy if not on sale, their Just4U coupons (can be loaded from an online account once you receive a store card) make a huge difference. Plus, they double coupons up to .99! Parking is great, there's a Starbucks located inside, and they have a great selection of wine and beer. The downside to this store, produce section seems to lack in options and freshness, the staff is somewhat monotone in words and actions, and the store itself has an odd layout with items missing or out-of-stock. read more

Everytime I go , western union is miraculously down. NOBODY is ever behind the customer service counter. I ALWAYS have to wait for someone to come after standing there for 5-10 mins. Today I went in to pick up some money and of course when I walk up to the counter, it's dark, nobody is around all the cashiers are just standing at their register talking and staring. Finally a younger girl comes over and I tell her I need to use western union, she looks around and says " oh, I THINK it's down, hold on " she walks over to her other young male coworker and says something to him then comes back to me & says " yes it's down" .. she didn't check to see if it was working or anything. I just left in disappointment because this is the 3rd or 4th time ive came trying to do western union and it's ALWAYS down. read more

This store has NO management. If you try to get something at a counter, employees will look right at you and walk away. They are happy when you leave them alone. Don't think about the fresh fruit unless your definition of fresh is anything that is a day or two before expiration. I wrote to the store through their "contact us" page. No reply. Why I consistently shop here is beyond me, given the two Giants and the SFW nearby - always liked the store layout when it first opened. But to say that it is poorly managed would be giving it credit. Aside from the apathetic attitude of most employees, the pathetic salad bar that they put out each day, the often depleted inventory of basic items in all departments, it is the Starbucks kiosk in this place that enrages me. Always dirty and unkempt, the kiosk is used as an employee lounge, where they occupy the tables to nap, make phone calls (had to listen to a big mouth, foul mouthed teenager on her phone just the other day) and make the area completely uninviting to shoppers. The two baristas behind the counter always save one of the few tables for themselves, leaving their coats and backpacks in the chairs. I have discussed this with this store's management several times but nothing ever changes. The new Wegmans, due to open in a few months, will devastate this dump. I suppose a few Safeway devotees will remain loyal - I will not be one of them. Note - I will give one star because of the floral department - it usually smells great. read more

So, I normally wouldn't rate a grocery store.. however, I feel this needs to be out there. This place has mice, like crazy. I understand most stores probably do, however if I can see them during the day you clearly have an issue. I saw one roaming around the bananas, and when I turned around and looked at the packages of nuts there was one roaming around ontop. I was quite annoyed because I had already done most of my shopping, but wanted to grab some fruit. I ended up still purchasing my stuff, (huge mistake on my part), but when I mentioned it to the cashier, her reply was.. "Oh yeah, I know, I saw one run past me the other day! Creeped me out!" Understaffed. They have over 15 checkout lanes, one of which is operating at lunch time. It would help if they turned more of the lanes into self checkout if they aren't going to staff up during busy times. C'mon Safeway. Really, you think charging 10.99 for a bottle of Rex Golliath wine, and promoting a second one for 10 cents is a good deal??? That's the normal price for this cheap wine. Your prices are extremely high in comparison to the local Giant just down the street. Additionally, it took 25 mins to get through your check out. Yes, I like Safeway a lot. Prices can be a bit high. Staff ALWAYS very nice. LIke someone else said, a lot of staff have been there a long time. That says a lot. In addition, I buy flowers there. They are beautiful. I will say I think they are understaffed. The bakery cakes are incredible. Meats awesome, seafood, too. Just all around nice. I need 100 sandwiches plus 200 pieces of sushi roll every Friday for the next couple months. Have a price from a couple sandwich shops and Japanese restaurants. Tried to find Deli info on-line, no prices listed, so thought I'd stop by the store and ask. As I walk up to the sushi counter, next to the sandwich counter, a little after 2:30 pm today, the woman behind the counter looks at me and as I begin to ask she walks away. Ok. I wait. She is talking with a man behind the counter and a woman in a Safeway uniform on the other side of the counter. At 5 minutes of waiting another guy wanders up and they all three ask him if they can help him. Two of the employees look at me and look away. Ok, my budget is only $700 for these purchases and only once a week. So maybe it isn't enough to get their attention. Yet the sandwich shop and Japanese restaurant were very pleased with my order. When I told them my experience they both said, "Thank you Safeway!" I experienced the Safeway Deli counter people's disinterest in the past and generally avoid dealing with them. I have never had a confrontation, just their general disinterest in doing any work. While still miffed at being dissed by the Deli people I picked up a few things to purchase. As I went to the cash register, the cashier asked me, "did you find everything you wanted today?" "No", I replied. "Good, that's nice", he said. In the future I will drive just a little further for Trader Joe's or go to Giants which is even closer to home than Safeway. Good bye Safeway! read more

This Kingstowne Safeway is one of the worst grocery stores around. I am very familiar with this store because it is extremely close to my home. My biggest issues with this store are 1.Items past (and I'm talking WAY past) their expiration date are still on the shelves. Yogurt, produce, meat, cheese, you name it - it's all past the 'sell by' date. Don't believe me? Check out the other reviews here. If you are in the market for moldy strawberries, rotted fish and stale chips then by all means, this is the place to shop. 2. There is never, and I mean NEVER, more than two full service cashiers at check-out. I assume they are trying to cut overhead expenses by herding people into the "self check-out lanes" but with a cart full of groceries, self-checkout takes a ridiculously long time and god forbid you have any beer or wine - that will stop the whole process dead in its tracks while you wait for an employee to 'verify' the purchase. My clean shaven husband once grew a full beard when waiting for this verification. On weekends (when many people do their grocery shopping) I've seen the 'full service' check-out lines literally backed up all the way down the aisles. Frequently there are abandoned carts full of groceries of people who just give up (can't say I blame them). I don't think I've ever been as excited about a grocery store as I am for the new Wegmans which is opening next week. I will not darken the door of the Kingstowne Safeway again. read more
