This UNSafeway looks a lot cleaner and brighter after the recent renovations. Their produce selection is still average; I usually get better deals at a farmer's market. The other day, the produce stock person was totally checking out MY PRODUCE, which I guess you can say you will not find at a farmers' market. The bakery is still average, with over-sugared breakfast items. The deli has a good variety of assorted cheeses, although I don't know how long they have been fermenting there. Most of the people who shop here (myself included) tend to be on the peculiar side. I run into at least 1 schizophrenic dude who is rambling to himself in the parking lot every time I go. Let's start with the positive because there's plenty of good going on here... Here's the best part-- the store manager recently donated 10 cases of water, which I matched for the Denver Rescue Mission. Huge, well stocked organic fruit and veggie section. Tons of great fruit and veggies. The prices are really fair too! Even the conventional produce looks great. Their fresh flowers are nice and they have a good variety. Their meat and fish section offers a decent supply of both grass fed and line caught selections. Overall the store is well stocked and I have been able to get what I was looking for each time I've been in. I live close by and this is the nearest grocery store. I would say that the store is in need of a face lift and there's some riff raff hanging around the store at times. I have never been bothered and the store employees have always been great to deal with. If you have an issue go talk with the store manager. He will quickly remedy the situation. And if anyone doesn't feel safe, tell someone so they can so something about it. read more

I used to go to this store all the time when I lived nearby and so happened to stop in tonight for the first time in awhile as I was passing by. The renovations look good and the store seems much better than I remember it. However, I will not be going back there for one reason alone. As I was leaving with my cart, the wheels locked up at the front door. The security guard told me that I could not take it outside because they get stolen too much. Applause for the company figuring out that they should get geofenced carts to prevent theft, but who the hell thought it would be a good idea to put the parameter at the front door instead of around the parking lot like every other grocery store?! At least the cart shouldn't lock up an additional 25 feet or so outside the door so people can pull up their cars for easy loading. I am so glad I didn't go there to buy $250 of groceries tonight, so the inconvenience was little, but I definitely will not ever go to this grocery store for major shopping due to this boneheaded restrictions. Here's an idea- do what all the other grocery stores do in the area. Hire DPD on staff, more security and perhaps even Front Range Patrol. Oh, and geofence the parking lot, not the front door! read more

Spent 25 dollars on a pork shoulder and the meat department covered up the expiration date with another sticker. They KNOWINGLY sold expired meat and tried to cover it up with a savings sticker. If you're lazy, just say that. Don't try to poison people trying to make a decent meal. read more

The store had zero carts so don't plan on big item shopping. Seriously no carts in the parking lot or the store. My biggest complaint is that at the counter where they make there chicken and all there special salads there was a female employee yelling at another employee stocking shelves nearby. Actually dropping the F bomb and several other curse words. The other employee was also yelling back at her right in front of all the customers. I told them they should take a break and figure it out. Went home and called the store to talk to a manager and after sitting on hold talking to two different people I was hung up on. read more

The "UnSafeway" is probably the worst major chain grocery store in Colorado! (I travel often from Denver to Vail & beyond). Some of the employees at times can be nice (most seem extremely unhappy to be there) , for the most part they are not engaging. I routinely hear employees at the cash register degrading other customers. The parking lot is a disgrace with homeless people & panhandlers asking for cash! Sometimes I wait at the self checkout for 10+ minutes while the machine says "Help is on the way!" It's not on the way. The help is over there talking to her friends counting down the minutes till her shift end. There's also A LOT of chicken wings bones near the self checkout on the floor. 7 out of 9 times that I've been to this Safeway the bones are there. Are they the same bones getting swept around? New bones? Who knows, bit it's definitely inappropriate. read more

Screw this place, I live down the street and been coming here for a bit but I'm boycotting this place now. Every time I walk here I dont feel safe, they have jacked up prices for shitty food, I've tried to get samiwhiches here multiple times and they new have their deli stocked at all, if you go before noon they are still stocking and cant get a cart through and I live their soups and they are always out. I really try to avoid this store at all costs but sometimes I stop on my way home from work and every single time I regret it. If you like being treated really poorly, this is the store for you. There are often no shopping carts. One time, I walked over to customer service to ask about shopping carts. They said that they didn't have any. I told them that it was going to be difficult to get all of the groceries that I needed without a cart. The guy said, "you don't have to shop here." Another time, at the self checkout, the machine called for help instead of letting me pay. When the worker got there to help, I politely said, "I don't know why it thinks I need help. I didn't need help." She said, oh you don't need help? Ok, good luck checking out" and walked away and helped two more people before coming back. Terrible, horrible store. The Unsafeway is a misnomer on some accounts. Sure, you might get stabbed, robbed or harassed by a bum, but the Unsafeway is sort of the safe way when it comes to usefulness. They always have fresh produce and a great selection of well, everything. They even have vegan butter. Take that, fellow ghetto dwellers. I'm not saying that I want to commit to the Unsafeway, but we have flings every so often. She's close, reliable (even in her scariness) and has cleaned up quite a bit in the past year. The place used to be dingy but now I walk in and feel pretty okay about buying my Naked juice and organic tomatoes. I might even go as far as saying that the store's open, airy layout is superior to the clusterfudge that is Queen Soopers. And for the most part, the Unsafeway is cheaper than Whole Foods. Don't come here looking for your cosmetics though ladies, Target is still your best bet. The Unsafeway is loyal only to Cover Girl. Unsafeway, you're not so bad. You're like a walk on the gentrified wild side and I think you're pretty ok. read more

Formerly known as the "Not-so-safeway", this is now my neighborhood grocery. Not my favorite grocery in the city, but I certainly wouldn't leave my hood to shop now. For downtown grocery shopping it's tops! Everything is shiney and good. The deli is awesome. The meat and cheese dept is very good - the veggies are all kinds of fresh. With all the new "self-checkout lanes", I'm a fan! I only use this one when I have too because every time I go there people are even so bold as to ask you for money while you are shopping. This chain grocer happens to be across the street from a popular park where the homeless hangout... and acts as a subdivision to an upgrading neighborhood where the yuppies are moving in, and the long-time locals are being pushed out. Walked into Safeway to find a huge crowd hanging around the entrance. I immediately perked up...Must be Girl Scout cookie season! Nope, folks. Safeway had no carts left. No baskets, no carts, nothing. I walked up to a bagger who apologized and said people take the carts home with them. Never before have I seen confusion over such a obvious grocery store necessity. I grabbed some plastic bags and prided myself for being resourceful. When I finally made it to the self checkout, people were out for blood. The lines were stretching into the aisles, but still people darted in front of others and ignored yelling from the back of the line. I was a little terrified but made it out with the only items I could fit into my two measly plastic bags. Not everything I needed, but enough to not starve. Let's face it. We don't really choose our grocery stores, they really choose us. I'd say 60% of why I shop at a particular store is location and convenience. The rest has to do with selection, prices, cleanliness, etc. That being said, everyone join me in a loud, "FINALLY!" for the newly remodeled Safeway, with self-checkout (at last), more staffing for those brutal after-work hours when the lines stretched far into the frozen food section, brand new tiny-carts (in between a full-sized and a hand-held) that perfectly fit my usual food item suspects, and a greater selection at the seafood and meat counters with tasty pre-marinated goodies to cook up without the prep. Other pluses include a DVD-Play machine and the best prices around. 1* off because you still need to watch your back in the parking lot! read more

Cute little "urban" Safeway in the Uptown neighborhood. I'm not sure why everyone thinks this location is so "hood" and "ghetto." It's anything but. Sure, there's a security guard at the entrance, but so what? It's not unsafe. It's not the "Unsafeway." It's my perfect metropolitan grocery oasis. Avoid this place after you get off work on the weekdays (5-7 P.M.). There is definitely no room for everyone and their big ass carts taking up the entire store. People will line up for the self check out and block an entire aisle, just so they don't have to interact with a cashier. Myself included. This unSafeway is the Five Points answer to the Queen Soopers in Cap Hill. Same interesting mix of young, hip kids and interesting folk...just swap the queens of the Queen Soopers for the guys drinking Colt 45 out of a bag at the unSafeway. I don't typically shop at Safeways no matter how unsafe they may or may not be, but this one does in a pinch. We usually stop in if we need non-food related items...detergent, soap/shampoo, and canning supplies. The boyfriend thinks the prices are higher here because of theft...I think Safeway just has higher prices than King Soopers in general. Always a close parking space, but always some sort of altercation going on at the liquor store next door...even at 10 in the morning. A solid 2.5 star grocery store, rounded up to three for the sake of convenience. read more

Yeah......another place I frequent only because of its close proximity. When I first began going there it was ok. But it's become a real bore of a place to shop for groceries. The fruit section is far from inspiring. The meat section seems to never be fully stocked in my opinion. And I think they have more cheese per square foot than any dairy farm in Wisconsin. And there's always the same old guy who always appears to be the only person running a register if you go in there after 9pm, no matter what day of the week it is. He's pretty nice by the time you are able to finally check out, but could you please speed it up, my ice cream is already half melted! At times there are your vagrants who will want to ask you for spare change. It's apparent they dont watch the news because if they did, they would know that in this current economy, there's no such thing as spare change. Just give them a "I havent taken my Starbucks today" look and you'll be fine. It's easier dealing with them than it is those people who stand out front of the store and ask you about filling our a survey or wanting you to sign some freaking petition. I came to buy groceries, not change the world! I will give Safeway credit for one thing, they are customer friendly and that's something you dont find everywhere. 1 star for proximity, 2 stars for the Starbucks inside. read more

I have to agree with a previous review, we don't choose grocers, they are chosen for us. We walk here, so there aren't many options. But it really is on an upswing (as is the hood) and that makes it a fun place. The renovation is welcome. It's smallish, so not much veggies and shit, and it can get relatively pricey, but it's got all kinds of atmosphere. I love the unSafeway, I love the people that shop there. It makes it always an enjoyable shopping experience. It's just so full of wierdos, hipsters, and straight out crazy people! Its got its own nickname! It really brings home that you are living in an area that despite the economy, is on the edge of the gentrification wave. PS If you're used to living in cities shopping without being accosted by freakjobs can get pretty boring. read more

The unsafeway is always an adventure....not a pleasant experience but still the closest and most convenient store for me so I frequent it often. There tends to always be a cop car in the parking lot..which makes it feel a bit safer, but I still make sure to park close to the entrance. Twice I have seen people taken off in stretchers to an ambulance ...one of these incidents after my call to 911 as I passed by an aisle and there was a person convulsing on the floor. Being the first witness...I ran to the pharmacy area to ask for help and the pharmacist aided the person right away while I called 911. The rest of the Safeway employees were less helpful, even sending me to customer service to ask for the exact address to give to 911 as no cashier knew the exact address. They have good deals every week and an ok selection for a weekly shop read more

Formerly ghetto now semi-ghetto gentrified Safeway, still with occasional shootings and stabbings on or near property. I've lived in the area a very long time and only rarely shop here due to several things. The prices are always more than Queen Soopers down the road on 9th, there is a population of thugs that (still) go here though the place isn't anything like it was in the early 1990s when it looked like something out of an LA gang movie. It's been renovated to draw in the new gentrifying hipsters so they have more of a selection than they used to, but again generally overpriced. That's just how Safeway is in general. I'll pick up a thing or two here now and again but unless I want to needlessly blow a bunch of dough, I simply don't shop here. A cop told a sibling of mine years ago that federal money kept this store open because there was so much shoplifting it would have closed a long time ago. I wonder if that's still true. If you like Safeway and don't want the accompanying Five Points issues, go down the road to 6th and Downing. Much better, quieter, safer area. Oh and if you want to see if they have something in stock before going there and decide to call, don't bother. I tried that once and the woman that picked up the phone humored me, set the phone down for 10 seconds, picked it up and then told me they had it. I went there and wasted my trip. read more

I hate being forced to use this Safeway.. Or I like to call it the UNsafeway. Being bartered for loose change every time I walk in is not what I look for. However, the patrons are good for people watching. The only reason I didn't rate this location 1 star is because of it's location. They need to invest in more of the little baskets, I've walked in on multiple occasions when none were left. Yeah, there can be some characters around here, but compared to other way-sketchier downtown grocery story offerings (I'm looking at you, King Soopers off of Speer!), it's a pretty nice place. It's always, always busy, but that's a given. The checkers usually have a semi-okay pace, the self-check-outs are usually open, and I've never had any bad experiences. Awful, nasty smell on all of the chicken. Our entire car smelled by the time we got home and we had to throw out all of the chicken we bought when we got home because we didn't feel safe to eat it. The rest of our experience was fine but this was so bad that we will not be returning to Safeway. read more
