The Good: If you live in Uptown or San Rafael (the neighbourhood that this place is located in), it's convenient, close and I get my meds here. The drumettes that I like to buy are at a reasonable price. And the majority of the time you can process stuff quickly at the service desk. The Bad: The strawberries here suck every time. They have Driscolls and no matter how ripe they look, they still taste sour compared to King Soopers! Some items are overpriced like hell that I would rather hop into my car and drive all the way over to Cap Hill to shop at King Soopers! The WTF: Nobody knows how to queue up at the fucking self-check out. People are so damn blind in this neighbourhood that they don't even check to see if there are people waiting in a line in the aisle as to not block the pathway. They don't even LOOK. read more

This is probably the weirdest Safeway ever. Everyone calls it the un-safeway and while I've never been ugged or anything, often the clientele are a bit sketchy. WELL some of them. This place is in a weird nexus of hipsters and those less well off. Homeless wander the parking lot, thugs wander the aisle next to Yoga girls, and skinny jeans boys. it's fun to go just to people watch. The store itself is awesome. I have lots of grocery choices living in Capitol Hill, so I rarely go to this Safeway. But because it was on my way back from the gym and I was bicycling in the cold, I decided to hit this one up. Big mistake. This Safeway just isn't that great. I expected it to be more expensive as Safeway usually is in comparison to King Soopers, but I didn't expect them to be out of some of the most basic groceries that I needed. Broccoli, bananas, berries, butternut squash all out at the produce section. I guess they have something against the Bs here? I asked a clerk about it and she blamed "the Thanksgiving rush," but I don't understand how bananas would be affected by that. Many other shelves around the store were also bare and I don't think I saw anyone restocking them. A lot of the other produce that I saw also didn't appear to be very fresh with limp cabbage, onions pocked with black spots and overripe fruit. Kind of sucks when you have to significantly alter your week's meals just because the large grocery store you go to doesn't have the food you need. Monday night is usually a pretty popular time to get groceries as it is the beginning of the week and one needs to plan their meals. And despite the weak offerings of this Safeway, there was a pretty large base of customers. Unfortunately, this Safeway doesn't think it's a busy night and only offered one check-in line and a few self-check out lines. I always prefer to go to a regular check-out lane as it is faster and easier in almost every way, but since only one was open, there was a long line. I opted for the self-check out only to find two-thirds of them were broken. So I had to wait along with many others. I had to go through their annoying self-checkout. At the nearby King Soopers, they pretty much always have at least 2 or 3 regular check outs available but even though they appeared to have staff on hand, they did not at this Safeway. Guess having a quick and efficient checkout system for their customers is not a priority here. Oh well, there are fortunately many other better grocery stores close by. For what it's worth I do think the "Un-Safeway" reputation is unfounded and mostly racist. I find this Safeway to be a clean and secure. It's just not that great of a store, read more

This store is great. The staff is friendly and helpful. There is always fresh selection of fruits and veggies. The pharmacy here is great and if you transfer a scrip from another pharmacy, you get a $25 off $50 coupon which is good toward any future purchase. Don't expect much from this place. About one out of every 5 items is rang higher than the prices marked on the shelf. The cashiers are horribly slow, and the self-checkout seems to work for about 5-10 items before screwing up and requiring one of the slow cashiers to try to fix it. Shelves are haphazardly stocked. And I too have found moldy/rotten food on display. If you need help finding anything. ask another customer--far more helpful than the employees. And, yes, a grocery who rents their very own DPD officers instead of just calling them once in a while is an interesting place to shop. I recommend early morning or late nite for the most entertainment. Unless you are desperately low on gas, or transportationally challenged, drive, walk, or crawl to any other grocery in town. I live near this Safeway and that's the only reason I shop there. Of course there are always decent sales if you watch the ad but that's not a "Five Points Safeway" thing, it's a Colorado Safeway thing so I can't give them any props for that. Many of the employees are rude and unhappy and do not want to help you. Some of them are great (sorry guys) and always have smiles, are super helpful, and are great to talk to, but it's always the few that are grumpy all the time that make my visits unpleasant. The security they hire is also a joke. They harass some people (me occasionally) and are rude and don't really do their job. I have nothing against transient and homeless people, but it is a problem when you see them blatantly steal and the security lets them walk and checks the receipt of someone who waited patiently through the check out line. read more

This grocery store is okay. They usually have everything I'm looking for and often send out $10 off coupons, which is nice. Their fish sucks, I gotta say, but we are landlocked and I couldn't find better at the Whole Foods either. I haven't tried their baked goods besides their donuts which are your typical grocery store donuts. I like the Pharmacy staff. They seem competent enough and the line usually isn't longer than 2 people. Docking off stars for the incredibly sketchy parking lot and the number of sketchy people that frequent this place. The selection is usually pretty good, prices of things are on sale are usually pretty good, the just for u items are usually good too. But regular price is generally higher, so only buy on sale I've harassed the staff to get me things on the top shelf, helped me with the self service check out and more. IT is the closest option for grocery shopping, not walkable, but less than stapleton from downtown. read more

I was appalled by the seeming total lack of effort on the part of the security guards at the door and the employees throughout the store. About 1 in 4 customers in any sort of mask, and NO one social distancing, paying any attention to the "great" one-way aisle stickers - Safeway, it's only a good idea if anyone does it... There is no excuse - Home Depot and other grocery stores (the ones we'll now be shopping with) can manage it. I don't see what's wrong with this store. I live about 2 blocks from this grocery store. Even though I have found it more expensive than King Soopers I choose convenience over price. The best part of my last visit was when I was looking at the salads an employee named Candice approached me and asked if there was something I was not seeing and she could look for it. I wanted two bags of salad but I only found one. Candice ran to the back of the store and got another one for me. As a frequent customer (every week), I love the product selection and availability of sale items. The service counter employees are friendly and helpful as well. However, I am perplexed with the staffing on the checkout lanes. 5-7pm is always a busy time for the grocery industry. I have 10+ years experience working for family owned grocers on the retail side, as a vendor for distributors, and finally as a corporate consultant for SUPERVALU. I have never experienced a store with such consistent issues with checkout lane staffing in those 10 years. What is the deal, Safeway Uptown? Only having one checkout lane, and 4-5 self service kiosks open (while the others are *not working*) is unacceptable during the busiest time of day, for the volume your store pulls in sales. Your grocery aisles are clogged up with lines of customers waiting to checkout. Store management needs to get with the program, perhaps visit nearby grocers that don't seem to have this issue (i.e. king soopers, sprouts, trader Joe's) to get inspiration on how to manage your cashier schedules. The customer complaints in these long lines are rampant every single time I shop at your store. read more

Up until recently, this Safeway has been two stars at best. You walk in, and there aren't ever any baskets at the front of the store. It's like a fun scavenger hunt to find one. At any given time, most of the checkout aisles that would have attendants are closed, leaving open only the self scan machines. Normally, that would only be a minor hassle, but half of those machines are packed together so tightly that you're screwed if you have more than two bags' worth of groceries. The store employees are pretty close to worthless: they can't help you find anything with any reasonable speed. You've got a better chance finding it on your own. That said, the food itself is generally affordable and of good quality. So why the one star review, you ask? Well, tonight I walked to the store after the gym, around 8:15. Normally it has to be after 10 for the local Safeway to turn into the un-Safeway, but not tonight! Tonight, there are two piss drunk beggars sitting outside the store. One of them falls to the ground, right in front of me. I offer him a hand up, and both he and his friend start cursing at me. No good deed, right? So I go inside and tell the security guard that there are two homeless people outside, literally so drunk they're falling in the parking lot. He goes outside, and is back in less than 30 seconds. He tells me that they're outside of the store limits, so there's nothing he can (will?) do. I tell him, this might be why people refer to this place as un-Safeway, and he just shrugs at me as though he doesn't give a damn. Then, when I finish checking out, I see him safely sitting on ass, playing around on his phone. As a guy without a car, living in Five Points, un-Safeway is literally my only viable option for groceries. But for those of you who have a car and/or a choice, go anywhere else! Yeah, I know the Un-Safeway joke. But seriously, the absolute best grocery store in New York is about three stars below this place, which makes it heaven. This place is a rev behind a lot of the newer Safeways, but they still have a lot of stock, and it's close to my apartment. There are good deals to be had (I think I bought 96 cases of Coke for the price of 3 over the holiday weekend) and the staff are generally okay. I never saw armed guards outside; I've never had anyone ask me for money; I've never had any problem with the homeless; I've never seen someone smoking crack there; and I've never felt threatened. Yeah, the place could use a coat of paint, but I've never seen rats eating the food there, I've never seen homeless people bagging your groceries for you; I've never seen cashiers ask for tips; I've never seen cashiers talking on their cell phones during the entire transaction; I've never had to pay extra to get my 2-liters refrigerated versus warm; and I've never had to deal with six-packs of Cokes being the only size they carried because the store is the size of my living room. Tim is the most PETTY male I've ever encountered. I was in self checkout and noticed my box of pasta was open. I mentioned to Tim I had all my stuff there and asked if I could run and grab a new one. I then said what do I do with the open box, and his literal reply was "I don't want it!, do you?!?" I said. It's open! He said to put it back and quit making more work for him. I could not believe it and just walked and grabbed a new box. Came back and all my stuff had been cleared from my checkout station and when I asked where it was. Tim said " I thought you left, so I moved it". Mind you the pasta section is literally right behind self checkout. Took me 30sec to grab a new box. This place is RIDICULOUS!!!!! Approx 35% of the shelves are empty (or holding expired products). The only lane ever open that is not self-check Is express, 15 item max. There are homeless people begging for money IN THE STORE. The produce stockers don't rotate produce, neither do meat stockers. Literally every single roll but one of plastic produce bags were empty. I found string cheese that expired on sept 12. I realize this location is in denver's famous Five Points neighborhood, but Five Points is no longer strictly gang territory and is now housing ppl paying $3k a month for rent. Not that the *should* matter & effect the quality of merchandise, but it does. It's okay to get what you need, but nothing great about this place, unfortunately. The "Unsafeway" moniker was earned by its location, but I find the clientele or people hanging outside are never ones to bother anybody. The issue with this place, aside from the fact it is dying to be renovated, is the staff. Aside from one woman, whose name I wish I remembered but I believe she is a manager and absolutely phenomenal (a bright spot in this dim place), the staff is completely uncaring, inefficient, and uninterested in helping or being friendly. They have everything you need and your grocery shopping job will get done, but it will not be an experience you look forward to repeating. With the new King Soopers opening my eyes to how grocery shopping could be it will be difficult to visit this location again. read more

OK, so yes it was definitely time to fix the old Safeway. I am so very glad that they did this, except I am puzzled by a few things. Everyone talks of the "improved" lighting when the store actually dimmed the lights in the produce section. This was confirmed by 2 different managers, that the overall lumens were less in that area as to increase customer satisfaction with produce. Does this mean that in dim light we are more attracted to apples and broccoli? I'm confused. Second, they have changed the location of most of the items that were in the same isles for years. Then, they also removed the boards alerting you to which isle items could be found, because if you have to look for something, you might find other things you don't need that you will then buy. If you can read a board that tells you exactly the isle, you don't wander around aimlessly for hours, picking up junk that is "on sale" that was not on your list of needs. The bakery is still the bakery, but the breads have gotten better. The deli is a little better, with the sandwich station being a big hit. I also like the olive bar. I have to say though, with no doubt, my favorite part of the renovation is the 12 self-service bays! this speeds up the pay and bag part of the deal immensely! I wish everywhere had this feature, I swear! I would have rated the "new" Safeway 2 stars were it not for this feature, but this makes up for a whole lot. read more

i really really wish i could give zero stars when i was there i noticed large tubs of parmesean cheese that were expired and had mold growing in them. i messed up the shelf and laid them out funny so an employee would have to attend to them. we went back a week later and the same parm tubs with mold were there and placed back up on the shelf. wtf! that's the day we bought cream cheese there and i got sick from eating it. now i get that i probably should have stopped shopping there as soon as i saw the disgusting cheese, but i didn't. it's pretty lame that a grocery store doesn't keep stock of it's inventory and keep it's customers safe. also ironic, or is it, i don't understand the rules of using ironic, however, i think alanis could fit something about the safeway not being safe into a catchy phrase. moral of the story, when everyone you know refers to an establishment as the "unsafeway," maybe you shouldn't shop there. read more

This has to be the worst supermarket in Denver! I keep wanting to like it because it's so convenient to where I live but it just sucks. For example today when I went, there were NO cashiers available. The ONE cashier on duty was on break and no one was assigned to cover. Trying to find someone on duty is not a rare occurrence. The staff that are employed there are obviously miserable and share that attitude frequently. I'm all for employing people with special needs but the man who collects the carts is actively hearing voices and today I overheard him talking to himself about how he wanted to kill himself. The bad experience begins in the parking lot. The beggars, tresspassers drunks, junkies, and homeless folks compliment the 1/2 size parking spaces and people that do not understand how to park. The store doesn't feel safe or clean. The odors that come from the meat department seem to be a cross between a dirty Cambodian seafood market and a bleach factory. They have always been extremely friendly and helpful. More so than any other grocery store I've been to in Denver. This is including various other Safeways, King's, Lowes, save-a-lot, whole foods, Walmart, trader joe's and sprouts. For the last year I've been going here about once every 2 weeks on average and I'm always surprised how all of them in my experience (from produce, the meat counter, checkout and pharmacy) genuinely seem to care about me as a person and not only a customer.
