This is a nice neighborhood grocery - for some reason it's not showing as a part of the Safeway chain and rewards program, but nonetheless, it's convenient and has a wide selection of goods from food, to household items, and everything in between. They don't carry as many organic options as other grocery stores in the neighborhood, which is not a dealbreaker. If you're running low on some kitchen stuff, this is the place to pick it up, or if you need something last-minute to pick up on the way home. I do like the fact that their shopping carts are not all over their parking lot like many other grocery stores, and there is more than enough parking. To the contrary, there's a persistent weird odor inside the store that's been there for years. Small thing, but noticeable (and not a thing with other stores nearby). The building itself is a bit old and could be updated. Overall, it is conveniently located, reasonably priced, and all employees are always friendly. Solid choice for shopping. read more

You know what, I've had more and more positive experiences here as of late that are worthy of a review update. The biggest win in my eyes is the local products I've found on the shelves at this Safeway - like simplicity juices and an impressive assortment of coffee beans from Hoosier roasters- at least a dozen kinds to choose from! They make the most of the small space with a deli counter, decent produce and dairy section. This has become my new go to spot when I'm missing a few items. The location is conveniently on my route to my son's school and the parking is easy peasy. Also, the neighborhood is charming and that counts for something, right? read more

Seriously out of touch and highway robbery. Their produce section was ludicrous. Asparagus for $8.50 a pound?! Green grapes for $3.50 a pound?! What planet are they on? Go to Kroger's and get better produce for NORMAL prices. At Kroger's, asparagus is about $3-$3.50 a pound, at this time of year. Cookies, crackers and other packaged food at least 2, 3, or 4 times the price at a regular store! It's not like their food is unusual or premium, at those prices. They're completely ordinary, sometimes even stale, at those prices. No one in their right mind would shop there. Who do we report this to?!! Their 'customer service' is similar. This spot has everything you may need and more. I was shocked at the options for fresh juice, wines, coffee and beer - there were so many. There was also fresh produce and gourmet cheeses. If you get to the back of the store, there is a deli and meat market. The woman who rang me up was a delight. Prices are a little higher, but understandable because it's a very small chain and you pay for the convenience of it being walking distance to many homes in the area. It's in a little spot that has many shopping and restaurant options. read more

Safeway Foods - the entrance to a safeway store - Grocery Near Me - Indianapolis, Indiana

I'm not quite sure I could explain the scoop behind Indy's Safeway Foods, which is not to be confused with Safeway Stores that exist as part of the Albertson's chain. Confused yet? Me too. If you look up their website, they appear to be an Indy-specific mini-chain of about six locations in Central Indiana. I believe they're an offshoot of what used to be Preston-Safeway, but their website doesn't really offer anything in terms of history. As my grandfather formerly worked for Safeway before it was Preston-Safeway, my confusion gets amplified. They kind of remind me of the old Double 8 Grocery Marts, though Safeway locations have stores in different neighborhoods and they carry a surprising amount of both local and semi-luxury items. I'd been in this location at 56th and Illinois 1-2 times before, but never really shopped here and didn't feel like I could truly rate it. After attending a nearby book release at Kids Ink and stopping by Graeter's, I opted to look for a handful of items before heading home. While I'm inching my way back into the community, I am definitely trying to pack as much as I can into one stop in order to reduce the number of times I need to enter/exit my car. Safeway is in the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood, though it's close enough to Broad Ripple that people seem to regard it as Broad Ripple. It's kind of a weird area - both higher-income homes and working class homes in the vicinity while Butler University is fairly close. They have ample parking with some accessible spots identified. They have the usual automatic doors that one expects at a grocery store. As you enter, you immediately realize this is an older grocery store in an older, residential neighborhood. I'd say the interior is somewhere between weathered, run-down, and dump. The aisles tend to be narrower and there were a couple spots where I had difficulty in my wheelchair. There's some good to be noted here - they carry my beloved Simplicity Cold-Pressed Juices, a growing local brand. They carry an abundance of tea products (hot and cold) and a decent selection of coffees including several local and regional brands. They even have a couple generic pod packs that are half the price of most national brands. They're a smaller store with a smaller selection, but they seem to carry at least a little bit of most things you would need. They carry some other luxury products. While they have some low-priced products and generic brands, I was amazed at how often their prices, for example on cookies, were significantly higher than other grocery stores and even higher than when I've had to use Shipt. On the flip side, they had quite a few competitive potato chip options and beverage prices were widely varied from competitive to just plain outrageous. The employees working the floor weren't particularly friendly, though kudos to the person working customer service - she saw that my wheelchair didn't fit one of their checkout aisles and opened up so that I could check out with her. It seems like this spot would be ripe for an actual decent, well-decorated, and clean location with something closer to a Fresh Market or a Trader Joe's (though I realize Trader Joe's is not really that far away). While this is far from an awful location, it's surprisingly unkempt considering its neighborhood. Between a poor atmosphere, frequent over-pricing, only modest access, and hit-and-miss service this is definitely only a spot I'd check out while in the area and only if I needed a few specific items. Truthfully, I only ended up with about half of what I actually needed because the others were so outrageously priced I simply couldn't justify it. Safeway is fine if you're in the area, but there are much better options in Central Indiana. read more

Small neighborhood store. It may be more expensive than bigger stores but they have all of your basic needs. The fried chicken is fantastic!! Freshly made everyday it really hits the spot! This store is not fancy but they have virtual payment methods and the staff is very nice. They also have an okay wine and cheese selection so it really can be a one stop shop, even if it is a little more expensive than other stores. read more

Safeway food mart was another first here in Indianapolis since I don't live on that side of town so yesterday after I was at a nearby supermarket and didn't find everything I was shopping for I decided to search out other markets in the area that I have never been to and I was pleasantly surprised about this one I will definitely make the trip across the city to frequent this one in the future. I just stopped in to look at some dessert singular and the other pole cakes and pies. I was also going to get some other things. However, when I asked a gentleman about the prices of both sets of items nothing was priced, he said they should be and looked at them. He then asked somebody from the deli what the prices were on items and one person didn't know so she went nasty other person and this lady came out all and a half. She said she was too busy in the deli doing chicken and she couldn't price items even if she put them out. She also gestured harshly with her hand and slammed one of the cakes and said if one prices on it that all the more the same! This was a really rude attitude to have when I was trying to purchase something. Not all things are the same price and there's no sign to indicate that's true. I was pleasantly surprised with my first trip to Safeway! It's a small food mart (I don't know if I'd venture to call it a grocery store) but it gets the job done. Great for a quick in-and-out grocery run when you're in a pinch. Nice selection of produce, too! I was pleasantly surprised to see some organic brands amidst the mix. I grew up close to a Safeway at 30th/Kessler. My memories from my childhood and from when I was driving were basically that it was rundown and had a limited selection, but was sufficient for a quick stop and you don't have to deal with supermarket/big box store crowds. I used to work at the CVS across the street as well, and the same could be applied to this store in the Butler-Tarkington area. I came to this store earlier today and there's obviously been some improvements made. The selection of products seems to have increased and the store is cleaner and a bit more organized than I remember. There is still a bit of the past in this store. Credit cards are swiped on a small machine by the register rather than through pin-pads available at most major grocery stores. Prices are a bit higher, but this is a locally owned and operated store. Having a neighborhood grocery store is important and all too rare nowadays so even though there is a bit of a higher price, I certainly don't mind stopping in if I'm nearby picking up products at other stores. read more

If you are searching for a basic no frills grocery store, Safeway Foods has you covered if you are the Broad Ripple area. I have been going to Safeway Foods for years and unfortunately, just like anything that gets old, a refresh is going to be necessary at some point in time. Safeway Foods is a place in need of a do over. What I like about Safeway Foods? I have found some unique items at Safeway Foods. They are a bit pricey on their produce that is not organic so I recommend skipping the produce section unless you are in dire straights and do not feel like heading to the other grocery stores in the area. The cashiers are always nice that I have encountered and since there is no self-checkout lanes, you do get the opportunity to have a live person help you check out. I personally prefer having a real live cashier any day of the week. There is also ample parking for the small customer base that Safeway Foods gets. They do have a decent dairy section as well as general staples so you should be able to find the everyday basics. If you just need some basic items and want to avoid the huge crowd that major supermarket chains typically have, Safeway Foods may be just what you need. read more

Those who have lived North in the Butler-Tarkington, Warfleigh, Meridian-Kessler, and Butler Campus neighborhoods are very familiar with Safeway, but for the Butler students, the newly arrived, or some in many areas of Joan of Arc, St Thomas, IMH, and Christ the King, it may be just far enough from their regular pattern to remain new. Even though it has been there forever. I remember decades ago we would stop there on the way to Rivi. But, after decades of being out of State, I had forgotten about it - and Kincaid's Meat Market across Illinois. Safeway does not carry everything, but they also carry more in many areas that most supermarkets. They have a couple of sections throughout the store dedicated to Buy Local. And, I notice they also carry Better options in a number of areas. Produce is fresh and well-laid out. Their wide selection of meats from "getting by" to specialty and higher end cuts. A fabulous dessert and quality ice cream sections. They have brands not normally found in the area from cereal to dairy and snacks. One of their Plains brand cereals is now my go-to. They are a Union shop, proudly advertised. They keep staff. You don't have to shop there more 3 or 4 times before the regular Staff recognized you. Prices are a bit higher, but also lower than some others in the neighborhood, and generally not enough higher to waste the gas and Time chasing after it several miles away. Kroger's closing their BR store, put a real hole in grocery choices on the Northside. Safeway the covers most every need, with a CVS across 56th for the other hole the Kroger's left. Especially, Butler students, give it a try. Study their selections. Their dessert selections alone may make Safeway a frequented cupboard... read more

A rite of passage of my clan was working at Safeway Foods during high school. All four siblings transitioned their way to adulthood following the trail blazed by countless other families, but I was the first in my family to make this place my first foray into taxpaying indentured servitude. And, thinking back on it, my were they definitely slave wages! $4.65 per hour for 24 hours per week, max. Plus the mandatory union dues of $10 per week! Ouch!!! My duties were from bagging groceries, to stocking shelves, to helping customers find things in the store, to making the shelves look full (facing the aisles.) The managers were as racist as all get out, but at least they spoke their minds uncensored, and they threatened each employee with their jobs almost weekly, and every once in a while did can someone for something. We were always getting harassed about slacking off, but that store was a well oiled machine during the nineties. We made so much money for the company, that the store actually got a remodel, and if you've been to other Safeway's, you know that is a rarity. It was probably the job that I loved to hate as a kid that I have the most fond memories of because it taught me the value of a dollar. Fast forward a decade (or two) and it's hardly the same store. The long time old manager, Jim, had retired, they managed to somehow squeeze in another aisle of grocery, and the high school boys don't nearly hop to it like old man Jim had us. However, it is still a great little neighborhood grocery that manages to carry some items that are hard to find at the larger stores. You could do complete grocery shopping here, but you would pay about twice what you would at Kroger. Their meat selection, although very good, is not what it used to be. They used to operate like a full time butcher, where customers would choose each individual piece of meat, it would be weighed and wrapped in butcher paper and labeled. Now most of the meat is prepackaged and half of the meat case has been replaced by refrigerated shelving self pick case. Hard to ensure the quality of each cut in package, but I guess you do not have to wait to select your meat. Although part of the charm was chit chatting with the butcher about their day. Everyone knew Lynn and Janetta and all the regular customers would ask about them if they happened to not be working that day. Now I cannot name a single employee. Although Janetta may still work there. They do not carry nearly as much produce as before (both variety and quantity) but the display is neater and more organized. Their frozen food section has expanded dramatically with the store scrapping a checkout lane and soda display for more space for ice cream and cold drinks. They also reduced the sizes of their shopping carts, probably so they could fit in the smaller aisles. The above all said, neighborhood grocery stores like this are vital to the community. They are anchors of convenience and make the neighborhood you live in less dull. In fact it is the crucial piece in all of the Tarkington shops. They make wonderful places to get what you need and get on with your life without having to venture out to the suburban sprawl of big box stores. Also the quality of their goods is top notch. Plus, as a bonus, they carry Blue Bell Ice Cream which is some of the best around! If you are in the Butler Tarkington neighborhood, and are not claustrophobic, take some time to analyze the aisles of this small store and see if you do not fill up your cart with goodies that you never knew you needed. I have to give this cute little grocery store 4 stars. They seem to always have what I'm looking for when I just need something real quick. A couple of weeks ago, I needed Cream of Tartar for the homemade drain cleaner that I was making...they had it. Then while my daughter and I were out walking her dog early in the morning last week, she realized she was out of dog food and the pup needed his breakfast...so after getting our coffee at Starbucks we went over to the Safeway and picked up a couple of cans of his favorite food to tide him over until my SIL could get to Petsmart to pick up a hardy supply of puppy chow. Probably wouldn't do all my shopping here, but every community needs to have a neighborhood grocery that you can rely on when you just need to dash in to pick up a few things. They carry some high-end merchandise and you can expect to pay a little more, but I don't mind paying more for convenience. read more

I really really really wanted to love this place. It's SUPER close to my house, and convenience is my #1 consideration in a supermarket. However, I found the prices quite high. I suppose that being a small store, they probably have to have higher prices to keep all their people employed. Still, when the Kroger isn't too much further away, and quite a bit cheaper on all my staple items, it's tough. Safeway does have a better selection than the Kroger in Broad Ripple (which is tiny but CUTE). I think this will probably be my emergency last minute grocery, and I'll make the trip to Kroger for everything else. read more

This grocery store is kind of weird. On the one hand, it has a fairly pathetic selection of produce. Really, I don't recommend coming here for anything fresh. They didn't even have some fruits and vegetables that I would consider to be staples. On the other, it has a lot of upsides. They sell packaged ground beef in tiny, one-person quantities, so if you're just looking to make yourself a hamburger, you can do that for about a buck. That's awesome. Also, this is the only grocery store in the Broad Ripple area where I can find leaf tea. Good leaf tea, too. Who knew? Check out can be slow because for some reason, they tend to only keep one or two aisles open at a time, even though they have, I think, four and people are sometimes backed up all the way into the bread aisle. Overall, it's not where I would come for a big shopping trip, but a good place to pop in if you just need milk and eggs. Man does this place piss me off. The thought of stepping in here makes me mad. This is my neighborhood grocery store and I have lived in neighborhoods with small grocery stores like this Safeways size, but never screw over their customers like this Safeway. +$3.70 for a gallon of milk? Only stocking the fanciest (most expensive) of ingredients?! Where are the affordable staples? Come on. Just makes me so mad to even have to make a last minute run here. Cashier service is great. Accessibility is awesome, but the dilapidated building stocked with the most expensive inventory to squeeze it's customers of $$ rather than stocking with affordable staples to ensure I return constantly is just really bad business. read more

Where to begin, well first I have been shopping at Safeway for a few decades now and have always recommended it to anyone that asked if I knew of a good place to shop. However, over the past couple of years and more recently the past few months I hate to say my views of the store have sadly changed. I know there is a lot going on with the economy right now, but the store has seemed to raise its prices drastically lately. Yes, the store has quite a few things you can't normally find in the bigger chains like Krogers, or Marsh but still the prices are very high, even compared to specialty stores like Fresh Market. The produce section could be better and worth the prices, if they had better quality produce. I don't know who they get their produce from, but whoever the vendor is, they are selling them produce that looks like to me it was already old when it was delivered. The Deli section use to be good and worth the prices, now though other than the fried chicken, the rest of the Deli is atrocious. Granted the fried chicken is still good "only if you get it after 3pm every day, or all day on Wednesdays" The rest of the time the fried chicken is to thick with batter and salty. But at the same time the prices of it have gone up and the sizes gotten smaller. "Again I know there is a lot going on with the economy right now, but still I feel the rest of the store especially the Deli is marking their stuff up at over a 50 percent mark up price" Besides the overly high prices at the Deli, the food is very lacking. Anymore "other than Wednesday's" it is the same old stuff. I should note that the only reason things are better on Wednesday's is that is the only day they have someone different working in the Deli. That is the only day "Other than after 3pm" I will really get anything at the Deli anymore. The woman that works there the rest of the time "whom I've found out is the Deli manager" when she is there, her stuff is way to dry. Nothing is covered when she is there. Which makes the macaroni and cheese have a thick dry crust, the green beans look shriveled, the gravy has a thick dry scum on it and the mashed potatoes always look like they are just a step away from turning back into instant dust. Also, she makes the chicken drummies early of the morning and they sit all day uncovered so if you get any late in the afternoon or around dinner time they are so dry they aren't even eatable. The same goes for the pork chops, barbeque tips and meatloaf when she has them. Another thing is the salads at the Deli. At one time you could get good old fashioned things like baked beans, egg salad and such. Now they have done away with those items and have replaced them with "the only word to use is fancy" salads that are more middle eastern and European "which doesn't go well with fried chicken" And again, the prices are way to high. It is as if they are trying to be like Fresh Market with the type of salads they have now. The only difference is you can actually get cheaper prices at Fresh Market, well and better tasting stuff that isn't soaked in vinegar like the new salads at Safeway. The bakery stuff is also over priced and 90 percent of the time stale. You can buy a whole cake for the same price at Krogers than they sale half a cake for at Safeway. Now I will say they have pretty decent slices of cake and cheesecake over in the produce section, but the room temperature cakes and pies they have are over priced and not worth the price. Over all I have to say the store is ok for quick convenient shopping for a few items here and there now but it's not the store it use to be. Especially with the prices. I have worked in sales for years and it is painfully obvious they "especially the Deli" is marking their items up more than 50 percent. It's so sad to see such a one time staple in the community here be such a high and bad place to shop now. read more

My wife and I have shopped at your store since 1979. I have two suggestions: install some kind of railing to enable your customers to step up from the parking lot to an abnormally high sidewalk (my wife took a serious fall at your store a few weeks ago because the step is so high. Secondly, we have been fortunate to travel in Europe two of three times; in every grocery there, the checkout clerks sit on stools while they very efficiently scan the purchase items; I think this would be a employee-friendly thing for you to do, without spending much money and without a negative impact on efficiency. This market will do in a pinch if you really need something on short notice, but I would never use it for regular grocery shopping. Prices are high and selection is generally poor. I would so LOVE to have a Fresh Market or Whole Foods in this convenient location! UPDATE 9/5/15: This store has begun charging for the entire container when deli items sold in a plastic container with a lid are sold. When I complained, I was told their manager said to weigh everything (incl the LID!) to recoup the cost of the container. Customers are therefore paying for far more "product" than they actually receive. I'm not sure if this is legal, but I know it isn't customary. I'll shop elsewhere if this continues. Many local grocery stores weigh items without the lid (of course) and some even deduct the weight of the container before printing the price ticket. read more
