To be frank, I didn't use this Safeway for grocery shopping. I was on a couple hundred mile road trip and needed a place to use the restroom. As others have noted, they seem to keep in cold in here. I noticed a couple of homeless people out front so they might do this to keep them out of the store. Not sure really. The restroom is easily accessible, closer to the door on the right when you come in from parking lot. It was clean enough and had all the normal supplies, toilet paper, towels, soap, etc. So...if you're on the road and need a place to relieve yourself, easy parking, restroom close to the front door and all the stuff you need to go. ;) And...if you're hungry, they have food too. I went today to get a few items. I had a knee replacement about two months ago I got some of what I went for because I couldn't stand much longer. Went to check out only two lanes open . Self check closed and lines backed up to middle of produce and to Starbucks. I used to shop there all the time but because of one butcher CISCO I believe, a couple years ago he was very rude and in fact I wanted to buy london broil. 10 lbs and have it cut. The sign says CUT TO ORDER. Well he told me that he would charge me full price for cutting it. We got into it and I reported him. Well here it is 2025 ending and starting 2026 AGAIN. . . he was extremely rude.. I reported again BUT when I saw him treat a women probably late 70s with a grocery cart full of groceries VERY RUDE I said enough. What he did to her was he was putting meat on the shelves and she needed counter help. She ask him if he could help. This review is solely on bakery. I ordered my son's 5th birthday cake on 2/18/2025 online to be ready for his party while we were camping at koa on 3/1/2025. About a week and a half ago. On 3/1 at 8:30am the baker called and said the the lightening McQueen print that was going on the cake could not be printed due to their machine being down for about 2/3 months. So why didn't someone call the day I place the order so I can have the cake done somewhere else. Nope instead Safeway basically said let's ruin the day and party! Thank goodness my sister works for a Safeway in San Jose that has a working printer and they are making the cake in 3 hrs and my cousins who are visiting will bring the cake up with them to the party. Freedom safeway was going to give me a discount for a cake I didn't expect with no image and no lightning McQueen toys. (They did offer some super Mario toys and another type of car and spider man. But my son unfortunately isn't in to any of those. Also he helped pick his cake online the day we place the order) I would rather spend my money on what we ordered not what they had to offer. Had a rude encounter with lady at self checkout . The system kept taking me to the loyalty number every time I would put my pin in . Told her I would take the item back and I was going to go get another card from my car . She kept insisting me using that card when I told her I would come back ( I didn't notice I grabbed my old debit card) she yanked the item from my hand a bit while I was holding my baby. That really rubbed me the wrong way and she proceeded to say something but I didn't catch what she said . I didn't even want to go back after that , I went to nob hill instead . Very rude. Let me start by saying I hoped to speak to a manager regarding this issue but no one answered the phone. During check-out I greeted the clerk to silence. As she was scanning she made repeated mistakes on pricing of my potatoes. She checked in with customer service twice before I pointed out the error directly. Still no acknowledgement of my presence though the price was corrected. Upon leaving, I said thank you to no response. Clearly this young woman is new on the job. She needs training on engaging with customers. I am disappointed to not have spoken to the manager and kept this as a store support issue. Hopefully someone checks these reviews. read more

The store was clean and well stocked, although organized a bit differently than other Safeway locations, or so it seems. Self check out worked thank goodness since there was only one staffed register open. However, I bought a bag of Safeway Select mixed broccoli and cauliflower. When I got home to prepare the vegetables for dinner they were clearly old and on their last leg. I had to spend a bit of time picking through and cleaning up the florets in order to salvage what we could for dinner. That was disappointing. read more

The layout of this location is fairly easy to navigate, you generally don't have to spend a lot of time wandering around to locate what you need and the fact that they keep the store well maintained is always a plus. They have plenty of great items in stock, many of which make it to their sales ads on a weekly basis and some are even featured as $5 specials. So I'm waiting in-line at Safeway at the deli and this employee is almost done helping this one lady and then another employee comes over to help, ask can I help you The other lady employee says excuse me that other customers is next the one person that was before me. I would like to know is why didn't the first employee stay and finish helping the last guest that was there instead she continued to fill things up and do things behind the counter that could have waited another five minutes ! Been a Safeway shopper for decades, but 1st time here in 95076. This places is dark, gloomy and overstuffed making aisles appear narrow. Not much to say in favor of this store. The pork meat is horrible. I normally buy from meat counters grocery stores so I can see and smell freshness. In a rush, I decided to buy pork chops from Safeway. Under the bright white lights they looked fresh. I noticed during checkout the fresh look disappeared to a somewhat older meat color...should have taken them back as I regretted it at home. Upon opening the packaged the stanky whiff of old pork put me on my heels. Did I eat them? Nope. Deboned, minced and cooked up a wonderful meal for my dog. Never again. read more

One star for being close to home, having one cashier who actually still says hello, and for having the best produce department around. Otherwise, the long confusing lines and other apparently disgruntled employees just makes going to this market extremely unpleasant. Cashier Juan is the absolute worst. Seems to hate his job, and the only time he ever says anything more than my purchase total is when I have 16 items in the 15 items or less. Everyone else seems hyper focused on their upcoming break. You can find a Safeway grocery store pretty much in every highly populated city. The buildings vary in size and the selections of merchandise on the shelves can vary slightly too. The setup of the inside of Safeway stores are pretty much the same across the board. Unfortunately, the bigger the city, the quicker the sale items run out of stock. Also the longer the lines. This is especially true if there is only one Safeway in town. Such is the case with this Safeway which is the only Safeway in Watsonville. Being the only Safeway in town, it is always busy. But for the most part, this Safeway is pretty well stocked. Only a couple of times have I found expired items or couldn't find what I was looking for. I have to say that their floral department is one of the best grocery store floral departments I've been to! I've found some beautiful flower arrangements and potted plants in decorative planters here for gifts and for myself. The ladies at the floral department are always so friendly and helpful too. They are always available to ask you if you need help with anything. They also offer great advice on how to care for the plant you purchase. The produce in the produce department is ok. Except for those times that I found a few expired veggie trays or moldy berries. A good rule of thumb is to always be sure to check the expiration dates and examine what you put into your shopping cart. This is a good habit when at any grocery store, but especially at Safeway grocery stores which I have found can be notorious for forgetting to remove old, outdated food off the shelves. Although I haven't been there in a while, the sandwich counter is the worst! The sandwich items and their fixings don't look fresh and I have personally witnessed a couple of food safety violations by the sandwich assemblers. It's always discouraging to see wilted lettuce and deli meats that don't look like they've been rotated and changed out in days. It's also discouraging to see the person handling your sandwich looking unkempt with questionable hygiene. I always have an upset stomach after eating their sandwiches. Needless to say, I haven't visited the sandwich counter in over a year. The sushi and teriyaki chicken rice bowls from the sushi counter are pretty good but pricey. I've seen the same items sold for less at other Safeway stores so I'm not sure why that is? I have no input regarding their meat department and other isles because I visit this store mainly during my lunch break from work or to pick something up for work. As far as the amount of cashiers, they appear to have a sufficient amount. Most cashiers are competent and friendly so that's a plus. Ironically the so called "convenient" self-check and 15 items or less lines are usually the longest! Especially on Fridays! Be sure to check the other lines because it might be faster to wait behind a person with 16-20 items as opposed to waiting behind 20 people with 15 items or less who each have to pay separately. This Safeway has a Jamba Juice but I wouldn't recommend it. They don't offer every item on their menu. It baffles me that they have a paper menu for you to review before ordering but half of what's listed doesn't apply to this Jamba Juice! Also the last time I got a smoothie there I took a peek at their workspace and let's just say it wasn't the cleanest. It looked sticky and as if the counters hadn't been wiped down in days! Plus the gal making the smoothies looked miserable and disheveled. Most Safeway grocery stores have a Starbucks kiosk included. Grocery shopping can be quite the chore especially for someone like me with a household of seven. After all that searching a refreshing beverage sounds appealing. So I appreciate that Safeway stores have a Starbucks. Every once in a while I treat myself to my favorite green tea Starbucks beverage. It's a great stop for a quick "pick-me-up". In my many years of pursuing caffeine, this is by far my favorite Starbucks. I frequent this Starbucks the most because out of the four Starbucks in Watsonville this is the best. It even surpasses the nearby Starbucks retail store at the other end of the shopping center in every way! That is only if Juli is working. She remembers what I order and calls it my "usual". Sometimes she even has my beverage ready for me while I'm waiting in line to order! I guess you could say I have been elevated to VIP status! Lol She always makes my beverage with a smile and good conversation. So if you are in the area and are craving Starbucks, don't bother with the other Starbucks. Instead come here and be sure to ask for Juli! read more

I preordered a personal birthday cake from the baker for a exact time and date. I showed her a picture of exactly what i wanted it to look like. She wrote down all the details so i was confident it would turn out nice. It seemed like she really did listen to what i wanted. I was even so confident i was planning on giving a generous tip. The day of my birthday i get there 5 minutes before pickup time. She HADN'T EVEN STARTED ON MY CAKE. I was standing there watching her while she threw it together. What was the point of a pickup time if you were not going to have it ready at that time? I give her some extra time because i'm a nice person. So i walk away to do some shopping. 15 minutes later i come back to pick it up the women who made the cake didn't even hand it to me she made a co worker do it. It literally looked like a kid scribbled happy birthday with BLACK ICING on top of a white cake. It looked absolutely nothing like the picture i showed her and she expected for me to pay for this? Again because i am nice i kept my mouth shut i did not want to argue and i even paid for the cake but i did end up keeping my tip. Never ever again will i order a cake from her she is terrible. IF YOU CAN NOT DO A DESIGN OR SPECIAL CUSTOM REQUEST JUST SAY SO! i would have took my business somewhere a else. I hope she sees this because that was messed up of her for making me pay for this hideous last minute thrown together cake.... Luckily i stopped by another small shop and this women offered to take the cake in attempt to fix it. She scrapped off the ugly black letters and redid them beautifully in cursive with pink frosting. I'm not a Karen and it's hard enough for me to speak up and defend myself but I received attitude around 4 pm something from the cashier at express line on 11/8/21. I supposedly took her time at the express line where there is x amount of items that should've been presented to get "attended" there. However the only one who wasted their time and mine was her. before I started putting my things down, I asked if she was open , she looked at my way and didn't say anything so I started putting my things down . Instead of telling me beforehand she decided to start scanning my items and aggressively put down my items and aggressively bag them and I got nervous when she grabbed my egg cart like whatever side ways with one hand. As she was putting my first few items aggressively down she told me that comment of how I should next time use another check out line. I was left shocked because I did not see the sign up since the store was busy and I was originally going to do SELF CHECK OUT however I didn't know if I could use the student EBT card on the self check out. I love Safeway but I will never step foot in this location after this incident which honestly I spent around $117 dollars this evening and I regret it. Every single time I come into this store which isn't often since I usually go to my local store in Aptos but the times I do have some errands to run in Watsonville I make a stop to Safeway and every time it's a terrible experience. The workers are rude. That's the biggest point. They never accommodate to help or just give you attitude. Today was extra special with Mary at check out. I put my basket on the belt for check out (something I thought was normal to do) she refused to help me until I emptied out my groceries and moved the basket out of her way. So I go into my least favorite but most convenient to home grocery store Safeway in freedom caucus. I went at about 8pm so I can forgive the fact there was nothing on the shelves and it looked like a tornado hit the place. I settled for second choice on most items I purchased because the stockers obviously we're not clued into the fact that it's Sunday and people buy food on the weekends. Soninwheel up to the checkout and the checker, Jaun who I suppose had a bad day because he was sporting one great big bad attitude. No greeting. Didn't care if I found everything alright, he must have played ball or some kind as a kid cause he was great at throwing my scanned groceries on to the the bagging platform He was concerned that I wanted to put 40 dollars on my card and pay the remaining seven dollars of my bill with cash. It's something that must be really difficult to do because he rolled his eyes and looked at me as if to say ' your kidding right? Geez'. Anyway once he gave me change and finished bagging my food. He scolded me for havingore than 15 items in the fifteen or less lane. His was the only register lit up and no one was in line behind me. What's the big deal? I had 21 items . 10 of which were one brand of yogurt they had on sale. So what if I had 21 items? I mentioned I was sorry, but he was unyeilding. Turned his back to me as if I was then dismissed. I think Jaun might need a vacation. When I spend 50 dollars on not many groceries and the customer service is excellent I feel ripped off.
