Also super game changer that I just discovered they have long hoses so you can pull up on any side and get ! Not limit yourself to pulling in on one side. Southshore has everything. Safeway's gas station is located at the entrance from Otis St. The lines can get pretty long during the day, so I usually get my gas in the evening. The pumps have extra long hoses so you can fill up whether you enter the pump island on the left or right. You need your Safeway Card and pay by either credit or debit at the pump. Otherwise cash payers need to pay inside. But now, you know longer get a 3 cents discount per gallon with your Safeway card. Instead, you get a 10 cent a gallon discount if you pay with a debit card or with cash. The price is less than your name brand gas stations and cash and debit card payers get to save more! read more

Dear Safeway Gas, What can I say... there is Chevron nearby, Am/pm, nobhill... but when I need gas, i squeeze the last ounces of my tank to crawl towards you. Why? 1) You are cheap (wait.. that didn't come out right..) - I can always count on your prices being lower than most 2) You are convenient (hmm.. that doesn't sound nice either) - located near safeway and all the southshore shops 3) You provide discounts (did i just call you cheap again?) - since I shop at safeway all the time, I'm always extra happy to find out I have a reward on my card. so worth it for my suv.. Despite, some of my older siblings and I being out of the house for a number of years, we continue to use our parents Safeway number. In addition, my two high-school aged siblings, my parents, my brother-in-law, and my man, all use the same digits. Well, if you are a Safeway shopper, you most definitely know about the rewards program. There are so many, for example, buy 7 sandwiches, get the 8th free, buy 7 Starbucks drinks, get the 8th free, or spend a certain amount of money in the store and receive a bigger discount on your next Safeway Gas purchase. My family is ALWAYS scrambling to redeem the rewards. A few weeks ago, my brother was at the Safeway in Rohnert Park, probably stocking up on beer, when he notices on his receipt that he's only one more sandwich away to gaining a free one. Sadly, he only has 3 bucks on him, so he figures he will head over to the bank so he could steal the freebie. Unbeknownst to my brother, our older sister is at a Safeway in another town trying to order her favorite Safeway sandwich, smoked turkey on wheat. The cashier casually mentions to her that she is eligible for a free sandwich. My sister, most likely with a sly smirk of contentment on her face, snatches the free grub right from under his nose. I use gasbuddy.com as an application on my smartphone to check out the local prices and I'm amazed at how often Safeway is cheaper than Costco, especially when you factor in the Safeway Club Card discount. I use both the regular and the premium fuel, depending upon the the vehicle I am filling up and I've never noticed any reduction in performance or in gas mileage (which strikes me as contradictory) as reported by some Yelpers. Enter from the parking lot, and not from Otis Drive. Don't worry about driving up to the island with your fuel cap on the side of the vehicle away from the island. The discounted fuel is not worth it's inferior quality. In the three or four times I've made the mistake of getting a tank here, I've experienced a noticeable drop in engine performance. It literally makes my car feel sluggish and slow, and I feel like I have to push the pedal down further to get the same amount of acceleration that I'm used to. Your experience may vary, but if you own any sort of performance vehicle and are used to noticing how your engine is behaving, I would skip this station and head elsewhere. read more

Someone said it, and I'ma say it again. Safeway Gas has LONG HOSES. It does not matter what side you pull up on. Please read the signs and don't hold up a line or block traffic just because you want a hose closest to your gas tank. I live 3 blocks away and because I drive for LYFT several mornings every week, I buy usually buy gas 3 times a week. Gas is gas and I pay Safeway's going rate because it's close by and I often get a bit of a discount because I buy some food at the store. One problem I have with this facility is that they very seldom have the basic tools out to clean car windows, no squeegees or paper towels. I'm not talking about 6 am. At 8am you often have to go in their little store and ask for these items. Most people are up and on their way to work by then, why can't these items be out in time for working people to be able to use them? Most of the staff there have been good, but I ran into an employee with a bad attitude recently. Last week I stopped to put gas in my Harley and, as usual, there were no paper towels and the pumps. When I went in the store to ask for a couple, an employee said that I could not go in the store with my helmet on. This is not a helmet that hides my face at all. He did not offer to bring me paper towels as I waited outside the store. Also, there are no signs posted saying that helmets cannot be worn in the store. When I asked another employee behind the counter for paper towels, the other employee told him not to give them to me because I was wearing my helmet. It appeared to be more of an opportunity to exert some imagined authority than behavior based on any logic. There are other places in Alameda where my wife and I can buy gas several times a week for our cars and my motorcycle without this kind of hassle. read more

My only complaint is that there's not a Safeway gas station in San Leandro. Yeah, Alameda isn't all that far away, but still.
