The deli department staff for the most part is the worst. They never cut the cold cut slice the way you ask even when you use the slicing chart displayed on the deli case. the cold cuts are then shoved into the baggie and when you get home the slices are a mess. Also they don't always wipe the slicer. last time I got home with white American Cheese with orange/pink around the edge probably from previous slicing. and I could have done better slicing the white American cheese myself because it was so darn thick. when ordering they look at you like you have two heads or they don't look at you and you sometimes have to wave your hand to get their attention. they ask you at least 3 times how much you want. even though you were clear in ordering. then they still give you the wrong amount. You call out to them and they ignore you. Most of these people have worked there for years and many act like it's their first day. If the staff by the deli cant do the job well, maybe they need to be placed elsewhere in the store not directly servicing the public. it's very frustrating doing business at the deli counter. I can also see the frustration of other customers ordering as well. The rest of the store is great. Well stocked too. Meats, fruits, vegetable, dairy etc are good. Keep bringing in more organic and local too. the store is clean. If it wasn't for the deli your store would have 4.5 stars in my opinion. read more

I don't care for the bad reviews. The staff are awesome and helpful. Don't expect good service if you feel entitled, they'll treat you like family if you put the effort, but most tourist don't and I see that occur. Depending on your diet, the ready to go food is always satiating, they have a wide of selection for everyone. The moment you walk in, it's straight to business, and the ambiance is always calm, but beware of peak hours, the self checkout line is stacked, and they have limited cashiers. General grocery store, prices and the quality is ok, but not as good or as local as the Foodland or as cheap as Walmart or Costco. Buying things like shampoo or soap and that'll be a huge markup. This is a VERY typical Safeway like you'll find across the continent. But HO LEE are some prices crazy even for a Safeway! Produce is just plain cray. I'd rather go to Yee's around the corner and get absolutely fresh tropical fruit for similar coin. For dry goods, the brand names are also often exorbitant. But at least there is usually a store brand comparable that is much cheaper. We typically stock up elsewhere and come here for small amounts of specific things. read more

The deli counter is really bad. The staff just ignores that you are there and when they do serve you they over serve. Every time I go there they portion out much more than I asked for and then after weighing ask if the overage is ok knowing that most people will just take it. Last week I asked for 1/2 lb of ham. I saw them take a huge amount of the already sliced out. Even I who do not work in the deli everyday, could see that it was more than 1/2 lb. Multiple times I have come in to use the bathroom, and those multiple times there is either no worker in sight or I have been flat out told no before with no explanation. Another instance, this morning as I'm about to throw up, had to speak with 4 employees before anybody came to help. My first (updated) review of 2017... While we hardly patronize this location, my spouse brought home something delish! POKĒ: Oyster Sauce Ahi Pokē - Oh wow, I've never seen or had this until now! I usually don't like sweet foods, but this was definitely the exception. The fish was super fresh, with a deep jewel-like red color, and was tossed in a bit of oyster sauce giving it a savory and slightly sweet flavor. Yowza!? Occasionally go to this location. The parking lot with many shops around so sometime you have drive around to find a spot. Depending on the time of day is when it's busy or not. Some days there are quite a few staff and they usually greet me or ask if I need help. Good selection of fruits, fresh bread,meats and other necessities. Also there is a Starbucks inside.Some items can be more expensive than the mainland. If you use the app you can download the coupons so your not walking around with. Once bought a fresh bread with the coupon it was about $1 and some change. I plan ahead before going shopping but end up over spending anyway lol! How can one store have so many incompetent people employed??? Every time I need assistance finding something the answer I get is "I don't know" or a shrug. Never a greeting or even a smile from them while shopping or paying, sometimes they don't even tell me the total when checking out. Just scan my items and stare at me while I bag them myself. I've never been to a grocer as bad as this one. Every time I'm there the employees are unfriendly and are never of any help to me. I don't think I've ever even received a "hello" when checking out. They're always out of stock on major items and their produce department is horrendous. If you're looking for fresh produce or fresh meat, go to FoodLand. The poke is awful too, but there's plenty of other options for that on the island. Literally the rudest people working here...not one, not two, not three but all that i encountered. The guy in the seafood section couldn't be bothered to even grumble a recognizable word. The lady at the deli straight up said "you need to wait" when we said "hi". The lady assisting me with the cart didn't even show the etiquette of verbalizing a word in response to a question. The lady at the checkout counter flat out rolled her eyes at me. Mind you. I work in customer service and am always polite to those that help me. Located in the Piilani Village Shopping Center, this Safeway is 24 hours. Large location, unique to Hawaii in which they sell poke (unlike the Vons back home where I live). My husband and I came to this location, in particular, looking to buy gallon bottles of water (so we can refill our hydroflash bottles during our visit in Maui). There were only 8 bottles of Crystal Geiser branded gallon bottles left, in which we ended up buying 6 of them. The other 2 was pushed back way in the back that was impossible to get to and didn't see an employee nearby to help us. During my visit, I also ended up purchasing 4 large nectaries (currently $2.99 per pound.... produce in general in Hawaii is more expensive than in other states... it's kind of sad when you see that meat is cheaper than produce.... ). Even though I picked firm fruit, sadly when we ate 2 of the nectarines the next day, they were a bit mushy inside :( Oh well, can't win them all I suppose. This is honestly a pretty big Safeway and the location is great. There is plenty of parking, as well as other shops and restaurants around it. While the store had everything we were looking for to stock up for the week, the prices were much higher than back in California. This may just be an island thing, but we'll be checking other stores out in the future to see if we can get some reasonable prices. First, I would like to say that the meat department, deli and bakery are awesome. They are beyond helpful and have great quality in food, cuts and desserts. If I were only judging on them, I would give 5 stars. The produce section is completely different than it's store's counterparts. I often find moldy and over ripe produce that should have maybe gone on sale or donated. It's terrible picking up mush when you're shopping:(. I have never been able to get a decent avocado there. I don't mind getting one that isn't ripened yet, but they try to sell very over ripe avocados. I'm not sure how a produce section works, but I've never witnessed one with so much produce that is unsellable just sitting there like it's ok... There is usually only 3 checkout lines in a very touristy area??? I take longer waiting in line to pay than I do in actual shopping usually. The checkers are fast and amazing, but I feel bad. I feel they need more help. That's a lot of weight to put on a few people's shoulders... the baggers are amazing too. I've always came home with a nicely packed bag. read more

This place is extremely clean, quite and a good store overall. I'm giving Safeway only ONE star because of how I was treated by an employee. I went up to pay for my items, and I realized my mom wasn't behind me so I pulled my cart back and when I looked back the employee had turned off her light.... sketchy but whatever, I got in the other line. As I'm paying for my things, I realize that she's still ringing customers up, and even turned her light back on... I've rarely experienced this type of treatment, but this years trip to Hawaii seems like I'll be dealing with this for the rest of my stay. read more

This is the best grocery store on Maui ! Always packed, moreover the selection is top notch. Sure it's a chain, but a reliable chain! I went on Valentine's Day. Was thrilled to find there was a Safeway fairly close to the condo -- even more so, when I got incredibly sick in the middle of the night at the beginning of the trip & remembered they were open 24hrs! Not sure why all the negative posts about the staff, found them to be quite friendly -- even before arriving on the island! Trying to keep in-trip expenses down, attempted to pre-pay for as many things as possible -- called ahead to confirm if gift cards purchased in Canada could be used at their location, the helpful clerk assured me the cards would be accepted & also advised that my customer card would be honored as well for any applicable discounts. Sidebar... for the vacationers complaining about the high cost of Maui, did you do any research before booking your trip? The sites all confirmed that some of the food items would be similar pricing, and some quite a bit higher 'cause its a tropical island that needs to get a most of their inventory shipped over-seas. It's been 3 weeks since I could buy milk here. They don't keep the shelves stocked very well compared to other stores. When I mention it no one cares. I told people both in the dairy section and at checkout. The organization of the store is poor as well. For instance, dairy is in 3 different places. Lunch meat 3 places too. It's also hard to find most of the organic or gluten free things I like to buy consistently. When the store is actually stocked and it's not tourist season I can usually find milk I like every few weeks. read more
