I would rather walk a mile up a steep hill carrying 30 bags of groceries during a pandemic than shop at this Safeway. 1) I've seen two fights between homeless people in the store. 2) Deli Counter- they always pretend I'm not at the counter when I stand there. The employees always pretend to wrap, cut or get something in the back rather than help me. I will stare at their back for ten minutes and then walk away. 3.) Hot Meals- the man at the hot meal counter always messes up my order. I ask for two chicken breast and he says Chicken? Then rolls his eyes.. why?? I'm not sure why they obviously have chicken...but it's happened three times now. I can't handle it so I don't get chicken. 4) I have asked a sales associate a couple times for different products and the general response is 'Sorry that's seasonal or I've never hear of that' ... apparently Parmesan cheese is seasonal and frozen veggie steamers are unheard of. I called and complained once and the manager said 'you know we have cameras so if your lying I will know.' I said to check the tape and I will wait... We find ourselves at this Safeway frequently. As others have mentioned, yes this place is understaffed and crowded, but the cashiers are really kind. I love the guy who has a "question of the day." They're the best part of this location. The location is great--within walking distance of our apartment and near the center of Lower Queen Anne. They do tend to have decent sales on many items we buy. Unfortunately, they're out of things sometimes, which is annoying. I'll have to get the more expensive brand or go to another store. They also don't have many unique ingredients, but that's to expect with a small store. read more

I strongly dislike this Safeway. The staff is sooooo rude. I've seen them treat customers in atrocious ways before and you can almost NEVER find anyone to help you with anything. One of my biggest complaints though is that you cannot get picked up here by uber. And Safeway doesn't have it posted anywhere. So I went thanksgiving shopping here and had a few hundred dollars worth of of food to get back to my Belltown apartment and uber wouldn't pickup here because of the game. You could only get picked up at a designated climate pledge destination which is impossible because the carts Safeway has do not let you leave the parking lot without locking. In fact, you can't even take the cart to the edge of the curbe if a car is picking you up so you have to drag a locked up cart across the pavement for like 15 feet or else you have to unload from the front door of Safeway which is absurd. Anyway, the day before thanksgiving I literally was trapped outside of Safeway for 1.5 hours trying to get my groceries home. Please link up with uber and figure this out because it's sooooooooo frustrating. It's such an ordeal to come here. I'll make sure to never shop here again on a game day. read more

Devoid of any other supermarkets in downtown Seattle aside from Kress, it is nice that Lower Queen Anne does have several options. Metropolitan Market, QFC and Safeway are within decent distance between each other. Of those, Safeway is the one with the best value. This is not my neighborhood store, but I have visited it on occasion as it is a couple blocks from Seattle Center. Have not used the parking structure, but it is an underground garage. Both of the other supermarkets have these too. The space is not on level with the street, as people walking by can peer down into the store rather than facing directly at the windows. The layout is not all that confusing as had been written about. Though for reference, it seems like all of the service departments are lined on the far side of the building away from the street and it is a bit odd to have the bakery and deli as the first things you see when you step in. For convenience, I do say that might be considered a plus. It is clean looking, surprisingly bright lit and prices are pretty good here. Sounds like they have the formula of a good supermarket down pat. read more

Just avoid this place and save yourself the headache. While my friends went to go check out with our small groceries, I went to go look for the bathroom. I found a woman stocking in the produce aisle. I asked her where the bathroom was. She looks at me, pauses, clearly thinking about how to respond and without looking back at me says "closed." Start walking out and pass by the register, I paused for a second and the cashier mistakenly thinks I want to check out and tells me he's not open. I then tell him I'm not checking out, just wanted the bathroom, he of course replies it's OPEN and tells me he'll ask someone to open it. I go back, wait for 5 minutes and guess who had to help me. You guessed it the woman who told me it was closed. She still tells me it's closed and gestures with her hand saying she doesn't know the code which by now I'm not buying any of her bullshit. I just tell her the cashier told me to come back. She finally says ok and opens the damn bathroom door. Utterly ridiculous employees work here. Now I know to go to the Metropolitan Market up the street. read more

It's really sad to see all of the bad reviews that this store has as I've only ever had good experiences at this location. All of the staff here are always so nice and efficient even on really busy days (of which they have many) and their long hours of operation make it so that I can pick up something at pretty much any time of day. I used to get most of my groceries at QFC but the closest location to me is a bit farther away and the prices are much higher so this Safeway has been my usual shopping spot (especially since it's walkable). As is the case with most stores in the city, there is homelessness nearby but not in any way that interrupts my typical day or prevents me from picking up groceries. I think people are really hard on this store because it serves so much of lower Queen Anne and Belltown but they do an excellent job considering how much is required of them every day. Again, I've never had a bad experience here and frequent this location often. I would recommend it to anyone in the area. (: read more

I've decided that whomever is in charge of planning for Safeway needs to lose their job. They layout of this particular location is abominable! It's almost impossible to find anything if it's your first visit. Everything about the layout here provides me with nothing more than an almost uncomfortable shopping experience. The aisles are really long and feel somewhat more narrow than other stores... I almost feel lost while shopping here. It's hard to explain, but after shopping and reaching the checkout counters, I almost feel as though I've come up for air. Anyway, the one- or two saving graces this location has going for it? A fabulous, helpful checker who's name escapes me and their parking lot. And if you MUST shop at a Safeway, head to the one up the hill. Much roomier, less claustrophobic. read more

This store is magical. I walked around here for a half hour, up and down every aisle, in a search for peanut butter and jelly. I could not fathom for the life of me that a supermarket would not have these items. I did not find them. The next day when I was there, I found them right away. That's magical. That's not mommy and daddy made you a brand new little sister magical. That's not Tinkerbell farting It's A Small World After All magical. That's making a deal with the devil at the crossroads magical. The layout of the store was clearly drawn up by stoned gamers. The labyrinth is beyond navigation. I would hate to be stuck in there if I had to pee. This is the closest supermarket to my home so I do find myself here on occasion, but the crap selection and their obvious dabbling in the dark arts has me stopping at QFC on the way home from work much more often. read more

I tend to avoid grocery stores. Not because I'm afraid of large crowds(I lived through WTO when I worked on 5th and Union) nor do I dislike high shelves (at 6'3", everything is within reach of these monkey arms), but because I never got into the swing of things when it comes to shopping like a 'normal' person and...yes...I'm a lazy bastard. However, since I started working on 2nd Ave W and Republican, I have found that, with the aid of the local Safeway, I am like the freakin' Flash (fastest man in the world) when it comes to getting my lunch. I have found that it take 6 minutes, round trip, to get to Safeway, get my soup and sammich and back to the radion glare of my flat screen monitor. Admittedly, this isn't REALLY that impressive, especially since I have long legs (see mention of god-like height above) and Safeway is all of 2 blocks away from work AND it's a gall durned Safeway fer shucks sake. I, however, appreciate the fact that the soup tureens are under constant watch for the dreaded 'Dry Pot' scenario. The cashiers are courteous and, on occasion, profane the spastic weather in the same manner as real people type folks(with swear words and everything) and not like the dreaded 'Cashier Simulacra' of my nightmares. Essentially, I like Safeway for the same reason people like McDonalds or Dicks...you know what to expect at each and every location...and I like this Safeway just a bit more because they buck that trend just a little bit. There always seems to be a ridiculous line at the checkout, no matter what time of the day I go. The cashiers are also terrible, and clearly know it as it's hard to find one that doesn't have a constant scowl on his/her face. I really hate the deli, however. The sandwiches are inconsistent to the point of being laughable, and the staff mostly barely speak English. That makes it very hard if even the smallest thing goes wrong with your sandwich. The "3 minutes or your sandwich is free" promise is a joke, and I've seen many people just give up on waiting for an employee and walk away. I can't wait for Trader Joe's to open next door but, until then, people in Upper Queen Anne don't have much of a choice but to shop at Safeway. For now, they clearly realize that. read more

I read other reviews before I visited this Safeway, and was prepared for the messy lay-out. But honestly when I shopped there, it wasn't that bad. It probably helped that I wasn't there to buy just one thing in particular, but I instead had lots of time to blow by checking out what all was in stock. I could see how others could argue about the weird layout (like why weren't the paper towels & toilet paper together?), but it wasn't that big of a deal to me. It also probably helped that I just moved to Seattle a week ago, so I was lost to begin with. :) Great prices, lots of stuff on sale. I took advantage of their 5/$10 sales going on across the store. Really helped save some cash. I spent less money here than I have at any other grocery store thus far (haven't yet tried Trader Joe's), so that was a huge plus. They also had a lot of the groceries I bought back in Texas, many of which I hadn't yet seen in other grocery stores in my area. I liked it, and will definitely revisit. read more

This Safeway is small for a grocery store. Please be nice to the staff. They are understaffed. Every time I come here, they are being yelled at. I'll try and say hi and they are just zoned out but respond. I feel so bad. Not sure what happened for it to get so bad. They're people and they're treated horribly. The produce isn't bad at all. The fruits and veggies are still cheaper than Whole Foods and it's from the same source. They have a small selection of decent seafood if you're not up for going to a more expensive place or making your way to the Pike Place Market. I wouldn't get ethnic food here just because you can get it cheaper at Uwajimaya or any other place in the Asian District. They have a hefty section dedicated to wines. Oh myyy :D If you don't have a Safeway card, it helps with partner gas stations which can be super helpful to save 5-10 cents per gallon when you need to fill up in the city or do a road trip to either Portland of Vancouver. read more

Don't get food from their hot deli! It's usually old and they don't have a system set up to monitor and pull food after x-amount of time. "Chinese Bar" is disgusting!!! Went it and was going to grab a piece of fried chicken, but it looked old, so asked deli person how long it had been in there, he didn't know, so he asked someone who asked someone else who asked someone else and all they could guess was it had been 2 1/2 hours, they guess, since the chicken had been put in the display. GROSS, but more importantly, who's running the deli. Clearly there's no quality control in place. Bought an egg roll once as it looked crispy on the outside. Bit into it and it was raw and sought on the inside - disgusting! ALWAYS, ALWAYS long lines. Be prepared to wait in line longer than it takes you to shop. Small store with limited selection overall. Produce and meat leave a lot to be desired. If you just need processed or frozen food, then it'll work for you. read more

So much good, so much bad. Let us start with the good, shall we?: great location, parking garage downstairs, everything you would hope to find in a grocery store, and good selections of meats and fish. MOST of the employees are helpful and informative. Bad: Their produce kind of sucks. Very hit and miss. Tomatoes squishy, avocados NASTY brown, limes sad. The layout of the store makes strategic shopping difficult (it's very long, not wide). Some of their employees are idiots. Personal story time: After we picked up my visiting friend from the airport, we went to safeway to pick up beer (me, my boyfriend and her). It was about midnight. We picked up Sierra Nevada and Dos Equis and headed to the counter. My boyfriend took out his wallet. The checker asked for his ID. Boyfriend showed him his ID. Checker asks ME for MY ID, as well as my friend. I hadn't brought my purse at all, even to pick up our friend from the airport, so I was ID-less. But, that shouldn't REALLY matter because I wasn't purchasing the alcohol, which IS illegal to do when you don't have your ID. When a mother brings her teenage son with her to buy some beer, the checker doesn't ask the SON for HIS ID DOES HE?!?!! Anyway, we didn't buy the beer. It was sadly pathetic, and the checker was a dickhead. read more

I stayed at the Mediterranean Inn for a week recently so this was my go-to store for the basics (water, disposable cups, etc.). The store is on the smaller side but seems well stocked with regard to the basics. If you need any kind of cosmetic supplies, go to CVS! Safeway's options with regard to health and beauty supplies provides the essentials but that's about it. Regarding the pan-handlers, I never had an issue with them (there's always one outside Dick's too). That's not something they can really control and it seems to be a issue all over Seattle. Concerning the staff, they're not bad but they need to be a little less aggressive regarding Safeway cards and monopoly game tickets. I made it clean when asked if I had a card that I was from out-of-state so getting one was basically pointless. Very rarely did they offer the use of a store card (fairly standard practice elsewhere) and them seems confused that I didn't want one. The layout is a bit funky but not bad. Overall, good for tourists if you're staying nearby. read more

This is my local Safeway, which I'm usually at once or twice a week. There is a fairly decent selection of everything you'd possibly need. I have yet to have any issues finding something I'm looking for. The staff is always great and willing to help if you have any questions. Plus, the prices are definitely reasonable! However, there are a couple negative aspects about this store. There are hardly any shopping baskets or carts, and sometimes the checkout line takes too long. The most recently time I was there, I ended up leaving since the line would have taken 15-20 minutes as only two people were checking. read more

I've never been much moved by a grocery shopping experience, which I don't expect too much from anyway, but today's was bad enough to finally bitch about this store. It's never good, but it's never been this bad. 1 - The shelves looked like some kind of "Everything's A Dollar!" sale had just ended. The cereal aisle had at least a dozen products missing altogether, and many more - perhaps the majority - were stocked with 1 to 3 items. All of which were either pushed to the back of the shelves, or were sitting haphazardly with the other products. This was the same case as existed throughout the store. Some sections were worse than others (health care was okay, cold beverages were a mess), but nearly every area of the store was neglected. 2 - The entire store had scuffs and dirt on the floors, as well as the occasional piece of garbage. The produce area had bits of food strewn throughout, and the floor was filthy. The new wood flooring that was installed makes it harder to see, but when you can feel it under your shoes, it's definitely bad. 3 - The frozen dinner section, in addition to being as poorly stocked as all the others, had two places where boxes were leaning up against the glass doors. Unless this was done intentionally as a prank to see people's reactions as boxes of food fell to their feet, then it's indicative of quite a lot of incompetence - in the case of the frozen pizza, it was visible from either end of the aisle. 4 - The products were constantly stocked in the wrong spots, or sizes switched around. Products that have been out for ages are still labeled as "New item!" I particularly thought the fact that the sugar-free Red Bull label had the New Item tag on it was amusing; not only because the product has been out since 2003, but also because it was stocked with regular Red Bull. 5 - I had plenty of time to notice the Red Bull, since there were ELEVEN customers waiting to check out in my line, and seven in the other. 6 - When I worked in retail, my district manager used to use Safeway as an example in presentations on consistency in customer service. Specifically, he used to say "Whatever I may think of Safeway, good or bad, at least I know that if I use my Club Card then I will be thanked by name after checking out." Judging from my last two trips to the store, this is apparently no longer the case. Not that it's a big deal to me personally, but when the ONE thing that could be relied upon is no longer there, it's a bit sad. There are many things that would be nice to have in addition to fixing these problems. It would be nice if stockers didn't wear headphones while putting out product, even if it is late at night. If you make the decision to be open 24 hours a day, you should be willing to serve your customers no matter when they choose to do their shopping. It would be nice if an employee would occasionally stroll through the store, in case someone needs to ask a question or be directed to a product. It would be nice if when I find an employee to ask, they actually knew where the trail mix was located (although they were very nice, and did eventually find one of the three places I eventually located it). But I'm willing to deal with the lack of these things due to the convenience of the store's hours and location, five blocks from my apartment. I'm not willing to deal with an unpleasant, negative experience just to buy some damn groceries. After today, I've decided it's worth my time to drive the mile or so to QFC at 5th and Mercer, which has seemed to be an excellent store all three times I've been there. Oh yeah, one other thing! The one super-cool thing about this Safeway was that the sign for the parking lot was vertical, and had the Safeway "S" on top, so it read "SPARK". It's the little things, ya' know? Anyway, that's gone too. :( read more

After going to this one and comparing to other Safeways I've been to in Ballard and Bellevue, I generally stay away from this one as much as possible. I usually do all my household goods shopping here and then skip over to Met Market for the edibles. None of the prepared food looks fresh or appetizing, produce is poor quality, and the other month I went on a late night pizza scavenge only to find the freezers were disturbingly malfunctioning, leaving everything within at unsanitary temperatures. Yuck. As others have mentioned, cashiers are always busy but what I didn't see mentioned was that the people they have doing bagging have NO training. This in itself contributes 80% to the length of the lines. They are incredibly slow, have no idea how to bag anything, and frequently put items together that should be separate (eggs, meat, chemicals), or put them at the bottom instead of the top of the bag (bread, tomatoes). The customer service desk is also intermittently staffed, so if you need them to unlock the liquor cabinets for you, prepare to wait a long time before finding someone to help you or else make everyone in line behind you wait a while for your cashier to grab it for you. A little baffling to me as this is a great location with garage parking and the problems appear to be a management issue. If they had proper staffing and kept the place a little cleaner, I would be more prone to shop here as they do have better prices than others nearby. As Met Market nearby markets itself as more of a high-end grocer, Safeway at this location would be well-poised to market itself as an everyday grocer with great values. However, I don't even see it accomplishing that purpose very well. ~~2 cents EDIT/UPDATE: The last time I was here it appeared that they did install new freezer doors. I also seem to be seeing some other minor improvements, and will up my review a star if I continue to see improvements. read more

Let's begin with the positive aspects. 1. Good location. 2. Some items I purchase on often on sale. Now for the negative aspects. 1. Their hours of operation are not listed on the front door. How is anyone supposed to know when it's open? Why would a store close at 1:00am? 2. The Produce section is small, expensive and ugly looking. I have never been tempted to buy even an apple from this department. 3. This location does not accept a US Passport as a vaild piece of ID. The way the cashier treated my friend who had a passport and wanted to buy a bottle of wine was down right shocking, and then I was not impressed with how the supervisor handled the situation. This store has the most unfriendly staff, not to mention slowest checkers of any Safeway. There are a ton of people that frequent this store and they are consistently understaffed. They either need to hire faster, more competant people or train people how to do their job and improve customer satisfaction. The produce sucks. I usually go down the street to the QFC on Mercer as they have some of the best in town, not rotting grapes. The deli staff is probably the perkiest in the store but they too are slow. I guess if you are too fast-paced you are not hired at this location since you'd make everyone look bad. I cannot really say anything nice about this store other than I sometimes frequent the Starbucks (I've had issues there) to get a coffee fix. read more

If you live in Downtown Seattle and live by public transportation or walking/biking, this is the market to go to. The prices are cheapest in town, (the only reasonable grocery prices in downtown Seattle even though it's in Queen Anne) there's a huge selection, bakery, butcher shop, etc etc, lots of things to keep you stocked on food. Honestly I don't see why people have such bad reviews, it's a great grocery store in comparison to Metromarket down the street or Whole Foods / Target a mile or 2 away. We're getting married, YAY! So now comes the fun part, the planning... I stumbled across the most perfect Debi Lilly aqua tin planters on sale for $1.25 each at the Ballard Safeway, naturally I bought every single planter they had left. There were 7, we needed 18. At this point I'm thrilled that I located the foundation for stunning centerpieces but aware that I need the tables to match and must find 11 more planters. I called a dozen different Safeway locations with varying degrees of indifference. Finally I spoke to Elise at the Upper Queen Anne location who saved three for us and Patti at the Lower Queen Anne location who had the remaining eight planters for us. All this was made possible by the lovely customer service lady who called around on our behalf. I could not understand her name either time we spoke but she's a gem of a gal and I am so grateful for her help. I'm really appreciative for the awesome customer service I encountered surrounding a momentous event in our lives. Thank you ladies of Safeway, you are delightful! read more

I've continually had problems with this store. I'll see something in the weekly ad I want (yea, I actually look through those), and then I'll go to the store, and it won't actually be on sale. Or, I'll go there with a shopping list, and they won't have the most common items on my list in stock. My last bad experience went as follows: I wanted to buy some yellowfin tuna, which was on sale for $5.99/lb. They were out (big surprise), so my friend asked if they would have more the next day and if it would still be on sale. The answer was yes, so we made a special trip back there the next day. The tuna was in stock, and it was on sale, but for $8.99/lb (which is really no sale at all). Thanks for your always excellent help, Safeway staff. read more

Deli == super grossed out. I went to order a Sandwhich today, and when the new guy didn' know which cheese was swiss, he got his co-worker who came, upwrapped the cheese, and placed it with in an inch of nose to smell it. Unsanitary. The Assistant Manager understood my concern. But I highly recommend against the deli here as long as the cheese smeller (who has worked there for at least 5 years) is gone. This is also worth of a Department of Health Complaint. I'd give them 1 star for this bone head move, but the rest of the store is okay as is the pharmacy. read more

Went there last night (5/16/16) between 8:50-9:10. 2 cashier's open, long lines. Waited until it was my turn, all the cashiers have always been nice; even though they come across as overworked. Paid for my stuff and headed out the door. Then this guy with a FULL blown hand held basket FULL of groceries decides he's not going to wait in line and leaves the store steeling ALL the groceries, and has the nerve to grab a flower on the way out. Sick. He is a man-bun, gay hipster with a nose right, dark hair medium build, around 5'10 white. When I yelled at him he scurried away faster. Safeway don't be cheap, hire security, I don't want to pay more for food because you can't control the flow of in coming out going shoppers. read more

This particular Safeway was 25min early closed Xmas Eve as customers rushed and hurried theyr ways thru the tiny parking lot area to rush to the front door where one of the employees were standing in front of door blocking any one from entering the store. I even mentioned why so early every one is rushing here to buy last min items and it's advertised as open and also blind woman was even turned away Xmas Eve at 735 pm and that was the most rudest cruel thing to deny a blind woman to enter store as well on Xmas eve! All the employees that Xmas Eve were rude and not at all acted as Safeway employees it was more less chaos with customers under the impression store location is open til 7pm Xmas Eve! I will contact the corporate office about this incident read more
