Is there a way I can give 0 stars? I unfortunately had a horrible experience at the south side location on Valentine's day. my husband daughter and I came in for our reservation at 630 for dinner. We sat there for over 45min without even a menu on the table. This is my husbands favourite restaurant so we are regulars at this establishment. It took over an hour for our cocktails to reach the table which they messed up on. At this point we were starting to catch up on major attitude and disrespect coming from the staff. We happened to notice that all the other table that were sat after us that also happened to be the same culture as the servers (Indian) were already eating their food. An hour and 45min after we sat down we finally received our lamb that we had ordered. This dish is usually served on a sizzling plate but it was not today. We politely asked the server if they had one and they told us they were all out.... We were sitting there for almost two hours and not once did we hear /see a single one come out.. A few minutes later they started walking out with them serving the Indian tables with the sizzling plates. At this point we felt so disrespected and attacked that we just wanted to pay our bill and leave. Unfortunately it was Valentine's day and every where else was so busy we had no choice but to just go home. All in all it was probably one of the worst restaurant experiences iv ever had. We dined in at Saffrons for the first time recently, despite having ordered take out from them previously. They've been on Parsons Road for 6+ years now. The restaurant itself is clean, and reminds me of a party room. We really enjoyed our food, and the service was spectacular as well. The restaurant was busy. The location is clean and looks great on the inside. The service is also great. The coconut lassi is highly recommended. We missed going out on fathers day so my daughter took us out for dinner and we tried this new resturant. Eating here first time we were a lil anxious but They follow all of covid precautions. Sanitizers at all doors & near washroom. Tables are far apart. Ambience -nice , simple & elegant. Soft music playing. 2 tvs - one showing news & the other sports. Both were muted. This is my third time here and same as always, no crowd. Actually the most I've ever seen is one other table occupied. Therefore you'd think this place is not very good, right? You couldn't be more wrong. The first time we stumbled here I had great food. Lunch special lamb korma. It was empty except for me and my coworkers. Maybe I got lucky? Nope, second time it was just as good. Finally I'm resigned to think that this place is either busy at night or great at catering or maybe the owner is rich and doesn't care. The server would take one person's drink order and then walk away. We had to call her back and let her know that more people wanted drinks... it was just very strange. After a few visits of forgetting my entire day after a few bites.. this is my favourite Indian restaurant in Edmonton. Ignoring picky food bloggers who focus on percieved service maybe because they don't know the food - my advice is to show up with a hungry stomach, and open heart and hopefully will let you experience it as I did: - Local, authentic and good. The pleasant family that runs this restaurant reflects in the food, service was thoughtful and caring. Food is not heavy and is on the healthy side of Indian food, unlike places who cheat with excess cream, salt and oil. - Well priced, generously portioned. Solid takeout candidate. It's like being force fed at a Punjabi friend's house. If you don't have a Punjabi friend, you're missing out. - My wife is originally from Vancouver, and regularly pokes me about the average Indian food in Edmonton, which I have started to agree with the more restaurants we have explored. This place made her remember meals in Vancouver. - Spiciness - sometimes I don't get the spice level I want either. Indian restaurants don't want people to have a bad experience. it's perfectly normal to ask for a side of cut chilli's and mix it in yourself, or bite out of whole chillis. This restaurant would be a 4 or 4.5 in Vancouver (or higher), and is easily worthy of the 5 stars for an Edmonton restaurant. I would let them cater a house party anytime. Saffron Indian Cuisine has been on my radar to try since I read about it in the Journal. That was half a year ago. This little plaza has some great spots including TeaCup2Go and Mi Casa Market, which are hidden on the back side of the building. You'll spot Saffron from the main road. We came on a Monday evening and had six in our group meaning we could try sooooo many things! The inside is modern, bright and spacious; we were seated at the only round table. Our waitress was great and checked on us throughout our meal. She even asked what level of heat we wanted (medium for my table mate weaklings). - Tandoori veggies ($14.00) - this came out sizzling; it even had some heat to it. This was probably the "spiciest" dish. - Paneer tikka (dry) ($14.00) - I'm not normally a huge paneer fan but these were hella good. Also came out on a sizzling platter. Something about frying cheese makes it extra flavourful. - 2x Coconut stuffed naan ($4.00) - addictively good. GET IT. It was perfect on its own or dipped with any of the sauces. Easily everyone's favourite of the night. - Spinach stuffed naan ($4.00) - the other stuffed naan we tried was the spinach. Good. - Coconut rice ($6.00) - very coconuty and aromatic; this was gone quickly. - Karela masala (bitter gourd) ($14.00) - FYI bitter gourd = bitter melon. Bitter melon is great; only other place I've seen it in town is at Sambol. - Matar mushroom ($14.00) - this one I found pretty plain but the sauce was tangy sweet from the tomatoes. - Bhindi masala ($14.00) - can never go wrong with okra when it's done right. - Lamb masala ($18.00) - the only meat entree we ordered but it was a very generous portion; the lamb was well seasoned and tender. Yum. - Vegetable biryani ($13.00) - biryani was simple and subtle in flavour but I liked the chunks of tomato in it. - Dal makhani ($13.00) - I can't say I'm a huge lentil fan; it was quite heavy compared to the other dishes we ordered. - Plain tandoor roti ($2.00) - pretty basic compared to the stuffed naans but had a chewier texture. - Moong dal halwa ($8.00) - texture was great; it was like an Indian version of corn bread but lighter, moister (you can taste the butter) and a nice sprinkling of pistachio and sliced almonds. - Kulfi falooda ($6.00) - fresh strawberries, a noodlesque topping (reminded me of Vietnamese chi desserts) and ice cream underneath. The ice cream was a bit icy but it didn't distract too much. Everything was fresh, light and tasty. Our bill was very reasonable given how much we ordered. We tried there different dishes they all were pretty good. We ordered Double Tadka Daal, and it was delicious. If you can handle spice go for it. Very disappointing to hear that the staff was rude and unwilling to hear him explain that by law, service dogs are allowed to be in public spaces, including restaurants. I was craving Indian food this weekend so I stopped here on my way home for take away. It was only about 5pm so dead quiet and they have a small waiting area where I relaxed while I waited. Ordered the butter chicken, garlic naan, and coconut rice. Soooo delicious! The butter chicken was absolutely mouth-watering, and the portions were so generous this was enough for 3 meals. Although I ordered "medium" it really wasn't at all spicy, so I might try asking for a little more spice next time, but I'm not complaining - it was still delicious and I'll definitely be back next time I'm craving Indian. This is our second time for take out here. Quick service and friendly too (Kirian I think). Again I had the Chicken vindaloo which was awesome, correct amount of heat without sacrificing the actual taste. Nans are a good size and tasty. The chilli chicken starter/appetizer...SO GOOD. Coming from the UK this is the type of Indian food we have been looking for, for a long time! Only one concern, we asked for a tikka massala without any spice(heat) and it was still too spicy for my wife. We will be back for more, keep up the great work guys! Saffron is a great stop for lunch. They offer some great combos that come with a curry, rice, naan, and a drink. I recommend substituting their regular soda for a mango lassi. Normally I prefer regular lassi's but their mango on is incredibly flavourful and complimented the food well. They have quite a few vegetarian options for their lunch combo which I wasn't expecting. Usually you get one choice and that's it. I ended up getting the Malai Kofta and asked for it to be medium spicy. It turned out not to be spicy at all so that was a little disappointing. It was tasty but not out of this world. Definitely worth the low price though. The service was decent but a little slow, particularly at the end when we were ready to leave to go back to work. Considering there were only a couple other tables there, it should have been quicker. Our server disappeared for quite awhile when we asked to pack up our leftovers. Overall I recommend Saffron if you are looking for an affordable lunch spot that's a step above fast-food. read more

Ordered take out on a Sunday night to try this place out. The $16 Lamb Biryani was decent and got the job done. The $14 Butter Chicken was passable, but was obviously filled up at the buffet and had less than a full breast of meat in the container. The $2 Naan was as good as it can get. Unfortunately they forgot the $10 Fish Pakora, but it was my fault for not checking my order before leaving which I haven't had to do in years. I've come here a couple times and have really enjoyed the food. On both occasions I have had the mango curry chicken, garlic naan, and coconut rice. It has been excellent both times. Our server was efficient, friendly and helpful with suggesting menu items. Food was served quickly and tasted fresh and flavourful. I often cant find restaurants that make food spicy enough for me, but my vindaloo was quite hot without sacrificing flavour. My wife enjoyed her goat/lamb curry, and we tried the samosas and butter chicken poutine for appetizers which both hit the spot. This is probably the first Indian restaurant in the city that I have tried that i would be happy to go back to. read more

This review is only for the menu items. I haven't tried the buffet. Since I found Saffron (formerly Friends), I stopped searching for Indian food in Edmonton. This place has really excellent curries with a wide range of flavours and textures, unlike most places that seem to have a couple of general sauces that they modify slightly. The naan is excellent, too. The meats are very nicely cooked; there's nearly a whole page of delicious vegetarian dishes, and the few appetizers I've tried have been absolutely delicious. The only trouble I've had here is getting the spice level to mild (I developed a mild allergy to chili peppers). My last two trips were perfect, however, so maybe the chefs are learning how to tone things down. If you do like hot food, however, this is the first place in Edmonton I've found that serves real vindaloo - the sauce is mostly hot chilis with a powerful vinegar kick. Highly recommend the shrimp vindaloo. Wish I could eat more than a bite or two. Of the 3 Indian restaurants in the area, this is definitely the best. read more

I only ever get take out from here. The portions are big and the quality is good. It isn't the best Indian food in the area but it is one of the better ones. They always give me a side of rice no charge. The aloo gobi, all the biryanis, butter chicken, paneer, and naan is delicious. This place was very accommodating for my birthday celebration by allowing us to book a dinner buffet on a weekday (which is only Friday to Sunday usually). And they allowed me to choose the items for them to cook for the buffet, so it was personalized. They also had a special where they brought me a cake from Dairy Queen (they also had options from other places but I wanted the ice cream cake). We recently dined at the Saffron Indian Cuisine restaurant on the 25th of August 2017. I had google searched some places on the south side of Edmonton and came upon Saffron. I had read a few of the reviews and made a reservation. I found that the hostess that took my reservation to be very polite and accommodating, it was our daughters 21st Bday and she even asked what type of Bday cake we wanted as it was on the house. Now, I am typically not a big fan of Indian cuisine due to the fact I have been let down more than once, well not this time. We ordered the traditional vegetarian samosa's and the chicken wings to start. I thought my taste buds were going into overdrive, the flavor with every bite was amazing. The mint sauce accompaniment was to die for as well. For our entree's we ordered the chicken masala as well as the curry fish and a vegetarian curry dish along with rice on the side as well as a couple orders of the nann bread. All I can say is every dish had its own unique flavor and I will definitely be back, all of the food is cooked and prepared with great attention to taste and detail. Now, we are a family of five hearty eaters and we were stuffed, we even had leftovers and that in itself is amazing. I loved the fact that when we got there we were made to feel as though we had been there before, we felt at home. We asked about the menu and the hostess recommended a few dishes, she even approve of the ones we chose on our own. This is definitely a hidden gem in the city of Edmonton and people need to seek it out for their next outing. Upon leaving I asked if it was a family run business, and yes it is, well it definitely shows that this family cares, cares about their customers and cares about the quality of service and food that they serve.
