Headed to maine from SC had been here before and needed to go back. Paul our waiter was awesome informative. There was a buffet option but we chose to eat off the menu. I asked for Tandoori chicken with no onions on it, and repeated no onion garnish because my Mom is allergic and when I came home the dish was covered with raw onion garnish. On one of our many excursions, my daughter and I stumbled onto this gem of a restaurant. I wish I had taken pictures, but this place was palatial. Everything was gold as soon as you step inside. The entrance was massive and the brilliance did not stop there. When you walk into the restaurant from the grand entrance it's huge. The servers sat us right away and the smells emanating from the buffet platters hits you right away. We walked through the line and they had such treats like goat roganoff and chicken tikka masala. I even stocked up on some tiny samosas and fish fry. Everything was insanely delicious. The naan was the most interesting part because it looked like a puff pastry. The texture was unlike any I've tried before but it worked. We each had three plates and were done in a matter of a half hour. I kid you not I spent 35$ including tip for wonderful food. So thankful we found this place and we'll definitely stop in again when in the area. read more

I wish they could do a 4.5 as this place would end up there. Between 4 and 5, it's closer to a 4 due to service and ambiance thought the food is a solid 5! Random find in Middletown NY area w the family. No reservation needed and pretty dead when we showed up. They haven't updated the sitting area for a long long time. Bar from the 70s or 80s and classic wall and booth setup for Indian restaurant in random US city. The food though... wow! Started with good samosas (though a tad bit small). They had onion chutney which not all have anymore. The mulgatawny soup though... over the top. Second best I've ever had. The main dish had solid taste and flavor on two chicken dishes. The rice came with a nice garnish and the garlic naan was perfectly cooked. The raita was solid and the gulag jamun had a good balance of taste without overly being sweet. All in all, they need a better service on the meals and to upgrade the room and it would be a solid 5 star restaurant. How have I missed raving about this place before? We were worried when the business changed ownership recently after so many years, but aside of not having the buffet anymore, the food is still wonderful at this lovely large restaurant, good for either a large group or a couple. They have some entrees we haven't found at other Indian restaurants - there are paneer dishes in various tomato sauces that are just divine. We'd prefer sweet lassis with rosewater, but their mango lassis are nicely done without an overpowering mango taste. Great naan bread. But why are the great Indian restaurants either 45 minutes away (this, Red Hook Curry) or even 1.5 hours (Mint in Lee MA)? Sigh! read more

I've been wanting to try this place for awhile and was finally able to go last night. Trying to meet some friends who were regulars, we ended up deciding on netting there at 8, even though lateness caused us not to get seated until about 8:15. It was a Thursday night and they were open until 9:30 but there was only one other table there. There were a lot of options on the menu so we put in drinks and appetizers first but it took a minute for us all to decide on food. The woman informed us that we had to order soon at 8:30 as they close at 9. We didn't realize that as everywhere else stayed 9:30 and felt bad. We then quickly decided and a few minutes later the appetizers came out. We got the meat samosas, which were supposed to be lamb but I guess they do chicken now, and a chutney. The chutney was DELICIOUS. Would have been better with some bread but still good on its own. For entrees, I got the Malai Kofta and my husband got the lamb vindaloo. I thought about getting the vindaloo but there was a warning that it was very spicy and even though I like spicy, it scared me a bit. I tried my husbands and it was not very spicy at all. It was delicious though. The Malai Kofta is probably my new favorite thing. The potato balls were delicious, although not evenly mixed as some bites were a lot better than others. The garlic naan was great and the communal rice they give you was well cooked. I also got a pina colada which was pretty good. The service wasn't great and we did feel very rushed. We were out by 9:30. They played music on a nearby tv that constantly played ads, I think it was YouTube? Over all the food was good, but the portions smaller than other places and the service was subpar. We were on our way to visit and stay with our daughter for thanksgiving before traffic gets bad, stopped i Middletown. Reviewed Yelp for vegetarian Indian food and Saffron Restaurant showed up being nearest as and had good reviews so stopped in. Has enough parking in plaza were it's located snd well lighted spaced parking. A liquor store is next to it.since, present management is in process of getting their liquor license, they allow BYOB! Which we found out after asking for wine/ beer. Seating area has booths and tables, we requested booth seating. Menu had lots of veg items along with others. See photos for of them herewith attached. Ordered Mutter Paneer and Mixed vegetables in Jafrazi sauce -cashew and almonds and spiced up- to medium hot. Also ordered Naan- Bread as Rice is served with order of curries. Presentation was really impressive and aroma of cooked food is still fresh as of writing this review !!. Service was very efficient and had clean restrooms. Wanted to try some Indian while in the area and found this place on Yelp. The name sounded like a place we go to in Queens so we decided to try it. The place looks a little run down on the outside and the table decor was "different". There may have been a party or something planned for that evening which might have been the reason for the decor. With there being Indian families in attendance, I knew it had to be good. The staff were prompt, attentive and courteous. My Fiancé ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and I had the Balti Gosht (Lamb). CHECK YOUR ORDERS! These people have forgotten items in our order multiple times, and refused to refund us for the item! They will refuse to refund you and instead tell you to drive back to the restaurant to get the food THEY forgot! We live 25 minutes away, and both times we could not go back. They would not refund us over the phone and said they would write our name down for next time. NO. They have not the first clue about customer service. The woman who answers the phone never knows what to do, and the man she speaks to in the back is rude, yelling and cursing about the situation which was their mistake!! Go to Aaojee instead or take the drive to Citrus. The food is much better and the people are way more pleasant!! read more

My husband and I love Saffron. It's been a staple in our regular monthly dining rotation of restaurants for years. Before the pandemic, we loved their lunch buffets and the variety of familiar and new dishes offered. The muligatawny soup, Butter/Tikka Masala Chicken, pakoras, dahl, onion kulcha... all excellent. I will say, when we get take out (both before and after the pandemic) there is sometimes an unpredictable inconsistency in some of our favorite meals. We might get an amazing dish one time and then the same dish will be quite oily on top of the sauce the next. Also, the interior/exterior decor of Saffron could use some serious updating. These are the only two reasons I'm not giving them a 5 start rating. All in all, some of the best Indian food around the area! I wish I could get their carrot halwa somehow (seemed to only be a buffet item). read more

We went the first night of new ownership. The staff are absolute gems Don't let the interior fool you the food is one of the best I've had. My non loving Indian food husband left there a happy customer. We got the chickpea flour covered veggies for appetizers and the flavors were unreal. To top it off they added a nice spice mix at took it over the edge. I got the sag paneer and it was perfect not droopy but a good consistency and full of flavor. The rice even had herbs on it! For the meat eaters in my party they had the option to have their meat with the dry rub version or curry version which was fabulous for my curry hating husband. We went today for the first time and was pleasantly surprised by the food. Food was fresh and delicious! We had a veggie somosas for appetizer which was amazing! It comes with 3 dipping spices ( onion slice was my fave!) for lunch I had the curry Goat and my husband had the fish curry. We where very happy with our meal. The waiter was nice and tentive. I went there the other night as I have gone there many times before when I am in NY. While the decor is tacky and cheap, (especially the outside window wrapping), the food has always been pretty good. I think the management or ownership has changed because on this occasion, after ordering the Chicken Vindaloo and Chicken Tikka Naan, I was so disappointed by what was put in front of me. I decided to forgoe a starter due to the prices. The naan had absolutely no taste of tikka and there was barely any chicken inside, only tiny chicken flakes. The bread was not fully cooked either. On to the vindaloo, I always order Vindaloo here as it has always been good with the right amount of spice and thick well "bhuna'd" sauce. I was served something that looked like and tasted like, spicy pasta sauce. The sauce was watery as well and anyone who knows anything about cooking curry knows, that water is the enemy of a curry (after cooking), it literally destroys the curry as it does not blend with the oils in the curry leaving a thinned out, watery taste. A real rookie mistake. The Vindaloo was a watery, tomato mess with 4 pieces of chicken and I ate as much as I could as I was in a hurry and the restaurant was very busy. One of the floor managers asked me how it was and I told him that it was terrible. He immediately fobbed me off to the Manager. I told him what I thought of the food and he stated "I will speak to my chef", no apology was given and he didn't even offer to give me the naan bread on the house which is what the meagerest of an apology would involve. A party of 10 came in and the Manager started berating the poor waitress for previously seating a smaller party at the largest table. He did this in front of everyone, embarrassing the girl. I left a note on my card receipt that summed up my opinion of the Manager and his poorly run, not so authentic indian restaurant. The message is not fit for public viewing and needless to say, I won't be going back. The menu is not cheap either so if you want to have a decent meal and the courtesy you would expect to receive for giving them your business, then avoid this place. The starters are outrageously expensive, some almost as much as the main meals. The curries start at $16.95. Naan bread is $3.95 to $5.95. All drinks are $10 but the glasses are only half full unless you're drinking the warm beer ($5). The Manager (if he is not the owner) should be fired as he is a poor excuse for his title and he is definitely not a people person. It's all about the $ with no care for their customers and the food is nothing even close to genuine Indian food. Really horrible actually! read more
