For a place I haven't heard much about or even seen much about it was amazing here! We were so surprised how good the drinks were and the vibes there are amazing. It was a nice, dark, and quiet lounge area. Animals all over the place and Batman always playing on the tv's. Not sure who came up with this place but in my opinion they're doing it right here. For drinks we got the foggy bottom, Kennedy center, and the library of congress. From the names of the drinks to the flavors it all blew me away. Very unique and intricate flavors. Never had cocktails like this before. Additionally, the presentation was very good too. Bartender was super friendly and attentive. This place wasn't busy at all on a Friday night and it deserved to be! Some of the best cocktails in Portland hands down. Swing by in and give it a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

We popped in here by happenstance on our way to the State Theater. In an attempt to find good parking and avoid pre-show anxiety we arrived FAR too early, so a drink was to be had. I saw the blue lights glowing and it drew us in. No idea there was a bar there. The decor was intriguing and the bartender was friendly. Turns out all of the patrons were from out of town doing exactly what we were ahead of the City and Colour show. I can't for the life of me remember the name of my drink - Blue something - but it tasted like blueberry pie in a glass, so I had two. My husband got a delightful autumn whiskey drink which warmed him up for a frosty wait in line. We will absolutely be back to see what they're pouring next time we're in town for live music. read more

Walking around during 1st Friday Art Walk and noticed the outdoor seating. Decided to take a look after walking around. Really glad we did. What an awesome location. They took over part of the Lafayette lobby. How cool. Close enough to the Congress Sq but far enough to relax and watch the people on Congress St. The staff are friendly and the service is pretty quick. The theme (name and decor) are around Teddy Roosevelt. You have to look inside and check-out the decor of the bar. It was too nice to be inside so we sat out and totally enjoyed the atmosphere. The signature drinks are interesting and there is enough of a variety to appeal to your group with varying tastes. I had the JFK Daiquiri which was awesome. The Cape Kennedy, was a hit especially because of the Tang. Very cool. Give it a try. Stop by for pre cocktails or evening a late evening drink and enjoy the space. Inside and out. read more

5 Star cocktail place in Portland. I put this one up on a pedestal along with Blythe and Burrows and Hunt and Alpine. Really fun politically relevant cocktails! I am a huge Teddy Roosevelt fan so I just love the theme. Every drink I've had here is seriously fantastic (although not cheap). I like to come here on a date night for 1 drink before I go out to dinner near Longfellow Square, it's a perfect way to kick off the night. Service was good! The only cons are that they don't really have food (just light snacks) and parking is difficult. Pro tip: take an Uber and don't plan on eating here, just drinking! I had my first mint julep here last year, and this time I tried Zelinsky's Promise. Both their seasonal cocktails and their classics are awesome. I highly recommend! read more

My new favorite! Was walking around Portland waiting for a reservation at Bao Bao and stumbled across Sagamore Lounge. I had seen pictures but didn't realize we were so close to it. We stopped in for 2 drinks and it was divine! Love the space, the bartenders were all very nice and the cocktails were bomb. Say, "Cinnamon in it" three times fast! That was my line after my first sip of my Reagan Red last Friday night. Boy oh boy, I have been thinking about the delicious Aperol cinnamon yumminess that was in my mouth. I'm not usually a huge fan of cocktails per say because I don't like the taste of straight alcohol, but this drink was revolutionary. The waitress was a+, she was very knowledgeable about the drinks, had great recommendations, she was quick and attentive, she also thought I was hilarious so that helps. Everyone had a few drinks and everyone thought they were delicious, well garnished and perfect. As far as the decor go it was interesting, I thought the bar area was gorgeous but personally I could have done without any of the dead animals hanging from the walls but I get that's like part of the thing and I won't deduct points for it. It was very quiet for 7pm in a Friday and I hope that was just a fluke thing! read more

I like it, I love it, I want some more of it. Instantly felt welcome when I walked into this place. Fell in love with the classy upscale decor. The taxidermy on the walls boasts some really unique pieces and many were even bought locally (actually a lot of the decor and furniture was bought locally, from places like Portland Flea for All, Kudos!) The Teddy Roosevelt theme is like no other and nuanced in ways that aren't easily spotted (the candy on the bar had a specific purpose, you'll have to go to find out). The service at the bar is super friendly and attentive. I had the chance to chat with the owners who were tending around the bar and they were so down to earth and awesome. The drink menu is fantastic and I wanted one of everything. Can someone call me an Uber? My friends and I ordered many of the cocktails off the menu, which offers seasonal and signature cocktails. My favorite so far is "The Blue Dress" which is delicious and loves to show off its beautiful blue hue. There is also a great selection of local beer for you beer imbibers. The inside space is large and spacious, lots of seating areas and an outside patio space. Food trucks are often outside by the patio if you want some grub. An upscale neighborhood bar that really classes up the Portland scene! read more

I seem to be in the minority here, and that's ok. An out of state businessman without industry experience moved to Maine and opened a cocktail bar. We certainly welcome newcomers, and he seems incredibly nice, so I hope he does well. But I don't believe it stands out. There's not many bars in Portland that don't serve food, and it's a dangerous proposition when your specialty is strong cocktails. There are food trucks during certain hours, but food trucks mixed with an upscale bar is an odd vibe. Combining the lack of food with a mildly inconvenient location leaves me unsure when I would pick Sagamore over competing cocktail bars. The drinks are well thought out and good. It's a creative menu with $11-$14 cocktails. There's also wine and beer. The atmosphere is (I believe intentionally) chill. It's a sleek, spacious, quieter bar for cocktails with a Teddy Roosevelt theme. But I'm 36 years old, not 86. The theme just seems random to me. Contrast the above with Blyth & Burrows, created by an industry veteran, with exemplary unique cocktails, an amazing location, food, and a historical theme that's decidedly local (maybe Teddy stepped foot in Maine?). Sagamore is definitely worth checking out, but for me, personally, Blyth and Hunt are still better. read more

Sagamore Hill is a great new bar that just recently opened in Portland! Prior to some dinner reservations, some friends and I came to check this new place out. From the second I walked into the door, I was instantly impressed. First off, when I walked in, I was immediately hit with the "brand new" smell which I personally love! The place was very tastefully decorated with various animal head on the walls throughout. The place itself is rather large and is not cluttered at all. You can either grab a seat at the large bar or find a little table around the outer edges to sit and talk with some friends. If this place were really busy there would still be plenty of comfortable standing area where you could hang out. To my judgment I found the menu to have a great selection of cocktail and drink options. They have several seasonal cocktails and some additional signature cocktails. I went with the Blue Dress which was a perfect light and refreshing cocktail. I also did a taste test with some friends and found that all of their cocktails were equally as delicious as my own. My friends and I sat at the bar and were waited on by a bartender and the owner. Both gentlemen were very friendly and easy to pick up conversation with. Prices for drinks are pretty average for Portland; $9-$14. Please note that this place does not sell food. However, I was informed that they do partner with some food trucks that come on specific days where they encourage their guests to grab food and bring it inside. They also have a pretty big seating section outside where you are able to hang out when the weather is nice. Super glad I checked this place out as I will certainly be frequenting here often this summer! read more

YES: - Servers. Nicest, most genuine people you'll ever meet. I came here with a bunch of people on my birthday, and we had no problem at all splitting up checks while somewhat drunkenly trying to figure out what everyone had. They are so patient here. And so helpful! - Ambience. It's upscale, especially for Portland, but not so much that you feel like you're underdressed. It's kind of like a classier cocktail option. - Bathrooms. Um, the nicest in town probably. (Apart from the ladies' room at Thirsty Pig which always will have my heart and the themed one at Blyth & Burrows.) - Dranks. YUM. They have amazing and hilariously titled cocktails, and when I went they had a rum special for $6, which was certainly strong enough to warrant a buzz and didn't break the bank. The specialty cocktails can range a bit - if you're on a budget, maybe stick with one or two and then head out. (This is what I do.) - Bar area- they have animal crackers, jelly beans, etc, which is fun and makes for an entertaining time. Also a great seating area to people watch through the wall of windows. MEH: - No food! I hope this comes along! After slurping down drinks and pounding jelly beans I'm ready for something to follow. I could see some reasonably priced cheese plates, pretzels, etc being an asset. This is a fun addition to the cocktail lounge scene that isn't directly in the Old Port, so you can avoid the massive crowds and still enjoy a refreshing drink. Came here for a friend's birthday party - it was okay. I felt a little old here, which is ironic bc it was a 40th birthday party haha. It was FUN and the cocktails were great, but we were all standing around weirdly. I wish it had more of the lounge vibe that their name suggests. It was covid-era when we were here, so maybe they pulled seats out to make room for distancing. I've probably been 3 times now since they opened and have mixed feelings. They deserve credit for the interior. If you've never been, it's worth going just to take in the beautiful job they did redesigning the space. There's quite a bit of seating at the bar and some scattered cozy tables, including some ideal for groups of 5-6+ people. They have a few craft draft beers (cans as well) and it's an alright selection, nothing that makes me go out of my way to get a beer here. The main focus is definitely the cocktails and they have some pretty creative options. For my taste it's not quite on par with Vena's or the Jewel Box, but better than Blythe and Burrows. Everyone has their favorites. The guys tending bar here are very friendly and seem quite capable of making the various cocktails, but we've had some pretty long waits. None of our visits have been at extremely busy times, but at least once there was only one bartender present and one of the tables of six asked for another round and in addition to some other drinks being made, we probably sat at the bar for 10-15 minutes before able to place a drink order. Another time one of the bartenders spent a good amount of time outside smoking, which could be fine but the other bartender didn't seem to know or at least we had to try to make eye contact several times to get a booze refill. On one of our visits the smoke alarm started going off (LOUD, can't talk over it loud). Turns out by being in the lower level of a housing building, if anyone in the apartments/condos upstairs burns a piece of toast the alarms for the whole building go off and they don't stop until the Fire Dept. arrives and turns it off. They cleverly offer $2 or $3 Fireball shots when this happens, which is a nice touch, but also suggests it happens often enough they need to have a special. We fired down some Fireball as did our bar neighbors and it was all at least a little funny, but probably only the first time. I guess maybe it's not just the beer offerings, it's overall not a place I would frequent unless I really need a break from the usual suspects. That being said, the beautiful space and creative cocktails make it worth visiting to find out for yourself. read more

This place is great! A wonderful addition to the Portland Cocktail scene. As you walk in the first thing that hits you is how gorgeous they made it look. There are several options for seating arrangements which can handle a decent size group or a solo adventure! The bar looks to me like a whales ribcage. I know that is weird but go check it out and report back. It is nautical and outdoorsy all in one. Sophisticated, whimsical and clean. The cocktails are adventurous, unique and all delicious. You can tell that they put some thought behind each and everyone of them. The staff could not be any more friendly and inviting and well... They have free bar snacks so I suggest parking yourself at the bar for the evening. Free pretzels, peanuts, animal crackers and Jelly beans... At first glance, I wasn't sure if Sagamore Hill Lounge would be the place for me...however, I quickly fell in love with everything that Sagamore has to offer. Upon walking in, you are quickly greeted by taxidermy decor, which are uniquely created. There is one buffalo (I think?) that is decorated using various parts of upholstery, which quickly reflect the modern flair that is evident throughout the venue with the lighting fixtures and the bar which is decorated with various hues of blue wood in a herringbone design. Along the perimeter of the venue, there are various pictures and cartoons of Roosevelt. There is also an outside seating area, where the bar plans on having various food trucks visit for customers to bring food inside or to eat on the outside area. Sitting down at the bar with a few friends, we were quickly greeted by the bartender, who was incredibly nice and attentive--I even came another night when it was busier than my first experience, and the bartender continued to check on us continually. When looking at the menu, there are a variety of cocktails, wines, and local beer on draft. Their cocktail list is separated by signature cocktails and seasonal cocktails. My first time, I tried the Poplar Forest, which is made with Hendrick's Gin, cucumber, lemon juice, and a dash of green tabasco. It was incredibly refreshing and the slight spice from the tabasco was a unique take. It happens to be on the seasonal menu, but due to popular demand, it will be placed on the signature cocktail list, so definitely give it a taste! I have also tried the Dark and Stormy Daniels which was strong, but good, and the Pink Lady Bird, which was slightly sweet and refreshing. Sagamore just has an easiness to it. If it continues it's unique take on cocktails and the service continues to be consistent, they will definitely have longevity in the Portland bar scene. I will definitely be back! read more

My husband and I were told about this place by an acquaintance who randomly messaged us once he realized we were visiting Portland. We decided to give it a try and boy are we glad we did! Easily the best cocktail I've ever had (I ordered the gimlet) and the nicest and most down-to-earth owners (Mike and Ryan). My husband and I stayed for 2 drinks each and the entire time we chatted with Mike and Ryan about everything from politics to history. We even went back the next day but unfortunately Mike and Ryan weren't there! We seriously wish we had a lounge like this in Portland, Oregon.. Went for the first time last week and was pleasantly surprised! The decor is fitting to the story behind the bar and the cocktails were incredibly clever. We spoke with the bartender for awhile about how they create their cocktails and it sounds like they love what they do! I had The First Lady and one of their seasonal drinks (that I can't remember the name of but it had cucumber and it was light and refreshing!) and both were awesome. They are cocktails so be prepared to pay cocktail prices, but I personally think these ones are worth it. I appreciate the notes in the menu about the history of the Teddy Roosevelt and his ties to Maine as well as the clever naming of their cocktails. "The '45'" description had me in tears ;) Perfect spot for a pre- or post-dinner drink! So glad to see this gem in Portland! read more
