The Lucky Cheetah is an absolutely amazing place! Think delicious dim sum with a twist combined with a fun tiki bar vibe combined with a sophisticated retro speakeasy décor and ambiance. What could be better than a dumpling lounge? We just went for the first time and were blown away. The ambiance of the place is unique. It feels like a chic timeless but retro speakeasy with the fun atmosphere of a tiki bar. Dark red and black colors, floral art, Art Deco chandeliers, lacquered tables, kitsch and fun cheetah lamps and statues. It immediately put a smile on our faces. The food is also unique. Dim sum for dinner but with more sophisticated twists and better quality than you'll find in most Chinatowns. You start by getting a dish with three different dipping sauces for the dumplings. The hot and sour soup was rich in peanut flavor, filled with tofu, mushrooms, and seaweed, with a cumulative little kick of spiciness. It was a great start and a major cut above anything we've ever had in a Chinese restaurant. The sichuan cucumber salad are Chinese cucumbers innovatively cut into a spiral like a slinky or coil spring. You pick them up with chopsticks and they spring up and down! Served in a horseradish and pepper coulis, they had a spicy kick. Don't miss the mojo baby corn. It's grilled, crispy, and addictive. You'll want a bucket of it when watching a movie. Steamed soup dumplings are filled with ham or prosciutto, a nicely salty and meaty twist on the standard ones. Steamed mushroom and truffle dumplings are probably the closest to traditional dim sum, rich, flavorful, and packed with shrooms. Crab and lobster lucky bags were deep fried wontons filled with a mix of ground lobster and crab, on a bed of crème fraiche with scallions. A great contrast with the crispy salty shell and soft filling! Our favorite was the sesame beef bao. They look like the traditional sesame balls in Chinese restaurants, crispy on the outside, pillowy soft inside but filled with brisket! They were mouth wateringly delicious! There was a selection of larger entrée plates that looked good (fried rice, lo mein, crispy chicken) that we didn't try but will next time. The drink menu was three pages long. Every kind of creative cocktail you can imagine, a long list of wines and sparking drinks, at prices from reasonable to 'special occasion.' For the atmosphere and ambiance, it seemed like cocktails or sparkling wine went best. All the staff and the manager couldn't have been nicer and more welcoming. They made us feel like old friends. Their warmth was genuine, we were sincerely touched by their friendliness. We were smiling and laughing the whole time, and amazed at how delicious the food was. It's unique. It's so much more than just a delicious meal. Going here is truly an experience, one that we'll remember for a long time and want to repeat often. It's an incredibly special place, and you feel special being here. You won't find a place like this outside of New York City, but here it is in Portland. I wouldn't recommend Lucky Cheetah. The aesthetics, atmosphere, and cocktails were all great, and I can see why the place is popular. Unfortunately, the service completely overshadowed the positives. The moment I walked in, I was asked if I had a reservation, which is perfectly normal. When I said no, the host gave me a look that felt very much like, "How dare you?" before telling me I was lucky they had one spot left at the bar. Oddly enough, the bar appeared mostly empty, but whatever. I was seated in what felt like the worst seat possible--tucked into a corner right next to the POS station, where servers were constantly moving back and forth picking up drinks. It wasn't exactly a comfortable or relaxing place to sit. The bartender was pleasant enough, but the overall vibe remained off the entire time. I felt less like a paying customer and more like someone they were reluctantly doing a favor for by allowing me to be there. I ordered the lobster and crab rangoon bags, which had a nice texture but were overwhelmingly salty. As soon as I placed my appetizer order, the menu was taken away, which made me feel rushed and unwelcome. The bartender also didn't check in much throughout the meal. TLDR; Food was good/fine. Service and ambiance were great. Interior and service were phenomenal. Our waiter was very helpful and enthusiastic without being overbearing. Interior was clean (including the bathrooms) and had a nice fun quirkiness to it. The food, while good, fell a bit short for me. Money bag: This was great. Both my wife and I loved it. Their take on money bag was different and it worked well. The fact that cream cheese was on the outside left more room inside for the meats, and we could choose how much cream cheese we had. Soup dumpling: Also great. While delicious, nothing was special about the dish. Spicy lobster lo mein: This was a bit of a letdown. Not sure if this is usually how it comes out, but the noodles were chopped to such small lengths that it was easier to eat them with spoon than chopsticks. The sauce, while clean and properly seasoned, tasted a bit too clean, almost to the point of being bland. The lobster didn't really add anything to the noodle/sauce and just felt like it was dropped in there. Truly an exceptional experience! I can't rave about this place enough!! Starting off with the vibes: this restaurant is absolutely STUNNING! They clearly put a lot of thought and effort into the decoration creating the most beautiful restaurant that has a cohesive vibe and so many perfect photo op spots! Go here and experience this place, you owe it to yourself. The ambiance, the music, the service, the drinks, and mostly the food are a reward just for you. I haven't truly been this pleasantly surprised about a dining experience for some time. My wife and our two teenage children visited for my birthday. The vibes and music were just wow. The service was amazing. Just enough, not too much. The food and cocktails were the real star though. Chef Charlie made lifetime fans out of us on Tuesday. The pork wontons were a huge hit. As I walked down the cobblestone streets of Portland's Old Port, I noticed a steady stream of people leaving Lucky Cheetah, which made me curious enough to stop in. My first time here and WOW!! I love the vibe as soon as you walk in. The wallpaper is cheetah and they really lean into the fact you are in a basement. All of my memories there are from the Old Port Tavern. they truly transformed the place into an amazing space. The ambiance was very cozy and dark with plenty of seating for everyone. Our drinks were okay. We decided to do family style and ordered a bunch of dishes to share between the party. We were expecting flavorful and delicious dim sum and noodles however that wasn't really the case. Our pork belly fried rice was way too salty to enjoy and the cold noodles seems a bit off. The skin of the lobster dumplings was too thick and the scallion sauce it came with had barely any taste to add to the dumpling (there were only 3). We also had the lobster and crab lucky bags, which seemed like a twist on a crab rangoon. The lucky bags were a bit overcooked as the inside meat was dry. The server recommended to pair it with their house made duck sauce, which sadly resembled apple sauce in taste and appearance. The pork wontons in chili were nothing special (and are plain dumplings, not wontons), but at least there was a normal quantity. This was a really solid meal! The dining room is nicely decorated with lots of red and cheetah decor, and it's a lower lighting space that's definitely good for date night! I came with a friend and we split 5 of the small plates and were stuffed by the end! We tried the Szechuan cucumbers, lucky bag dumplings, shu mai, pork wontons, and char siu bao. Everything was really well done but the standout was the pork wontons in chili oil - my friend texted me three days later that she was still thinking about them! As in the soup literally broke and leaked from the skin because the skin is too thin. The other 2, same issue, either the skin is too thick or too thin. This is my new favorite Portland restaurant. It's very unexpected, it's down in a basement and feels luxuriously cozy. I wanted great Chinese food with atmosphere and great service and this did it! I loved the unusual cocktails, including the lucky martini with sesame and caviar stuffed olives that insanely decadent and totally worth it. Lucky Cheetah is difficult to review because I have to push aside my feelings for what I wish it was: Asian Bird & Co. For me, Bird & Co. is the best overall Mexican spot in Portland. The food and cocktails are great and the price point is perfect. It's a more no-frills vibe, but if that keeps the prices lower, I'm all for it. Lucky Cheetah veers the opposite direction. It's all frills. It might be the nicest buildout without windows that I've ever seen. It would be a hot spot in Boston or Chicago, so it's stunning to see such an atmosphere in Portland. Especially in the Old Port Tavern building. I can't emphasize enough how nice it is. And with that comes the tricky part: the prices are definitely on the higher end. As a local, I rarely crave caviar, foie gras, wagyu or lobster dishes, and the current menu is filled with them. So this won't be a regular stop in my rotation for dinner. But the creative cocktails are some of the best in the city, and the service....impeccable. The whole front of the house, from the hostesses to the bartenders, rival anywhere in Portland. It really might be Blyth, Room and Improvement and Lucky Cheetah for the three best trendy cocktail bars in town. I heard the dinner menu is heavily expanding in the coming weeks, and I'm hoping for more moderate options. But for now, I'll gladly sip an Eastern Medicine while slow clapping at how they transformed a fish-tank filled divey dungeon into such a luxurious lounge. read more

It's our first time trying Lucky Cheetah. I'm giving this restaurant a 3 star based on the food. The ambience and staff were great, but the food is mediocre and trying hard to become a Chinese/American food. None of the food we ordered like the Dimsum, Chinese pork fried rice, baby corn appetizers just to name a few really stood out as Chinese cuisine. If they want to serve Chinese dishes they should hire a real Chinese Chef who can cook assorted authentic Dimsum dishes and Chinese food. Headed out on a Friday night solo for the Lucky Cheetah. I was a fan of the OPT for many years and was happy to hear it was taken over. The signage was clear and had cheetahs on its design, menu greets you before you head down the stairs. Opened the door and a nice bureau is set up as you walk in. Turn the corner and it's like "show time"! Club almost pounding music of 80's to today artist like Prince and his hit Kiss". I did not make a reservation as I come out on a chance. I was told to give them a second so they could see what the wait might be for me. She came back moments later and approximated my wait time. Instead of going somewhere else for a drink she offered me a spot on the standing counter. Which I agreed too. I waited a few seconds and was given some water and a menu to look at. A server would be over shortly. When the server came I asked a few questions and asked for a few more minutes. She returned 12 minutes later and took my drink order, their version of a Hot Toddy with Japanes whiskey. While I waited I made use of the restroom. Unisex with 6 individual rooms. They really out did them selves with the decor. See the pictures included. Confusing thing there were the bells on the doors. They hang in the door knob. Some were outside the room and others inside, mine was inside so that means it's available?? No one available to explain. After 15 minutes and my adventure the drink arrived. Taste was good and as it should. Five minutes after that I was seated at the bar. Seated at the bar I was greeted shortly by a nice gentleman with a mustache and beard. Very friendly and very happy to answer as many questions as I could throw at him. After my Q and A I was ready to order, Broccolini with Duck Crackling and the Shrimp and Pork Shumai. While I waited the couple next to me ordered a bitters to end their meal and the bartender couldn't understand who would enjoy it, the smell alone is strong. He gave me a few drops in a shot glass to smell. It was strong, reminded me of Grappa. Order was in ring up at approximately 6:11p and my first dish the Broccolini came at 6:40p. In that time I had finished my drink and was drinking water. Disappointed to say the least, the broccolini was semi done with some hard stalks that were slathered in the sauce. The Duck crackling was a joke! See the picture, small flakes and no substance. For $$ I paid for this I expected at least some large pieces. About half way through my meal I needed more water, the pitcher was semi in front of me, but on the bartenders side of the bar. I waited approximately 8 minutes for anyone behind the bar to see I was empty, even trying to make eye contact was hard. I finally had to finally stand up and get the water for myself. I needed a drink to wash my food down. Ok so now that plate is cleared and after 5 minutes or so the bartender asks if our time together has ended or if I want to see the dessert menu, what? Where is the other plate I ordered? Oh yeah! 15 minutes later the Shumai arrived. 5 pieces of unremarkable dumpling type food. Taste was good but not elevated in any way. Ended my evening after paying my bill. I'm still hungry. To sum it up; fun trendy atmosphere, loud music, an OK menu selection, and friendly staff, just not observant enough. I recommend the "Wet Bandit" and the Shumai. I will be back as my GF would love this atmosphere and give this establishment a second chance maybe not a Friday night. Decor was great! read more

Went with the wife to celebrate our anniversary. I like the ambience, feels quite unique and made quite the first impression. Service was very good. However, the food was a hit-and-miss. A couple of the small plates we had were delicious, most were fine, and some were just poorly done. The place is beautiful and very well done. We sat down and the service was great. Very prompt and attentive. Mostly appetizers that are great to split and a few large plates. We got the cucumbers, boa buns, lobster dumplings and pork belly fried rice. Everything was amazing, and cooked wonderfully. I had a martini with their own infused vodka. Finally got to try this place out after seeing so much about it. We made a reservation pretty easily. The interior is very cool. Super dark dining space with no windows. But it matches with what they're going for. It's like an upscale lounge feel with leopard print rug, a great red and black color combo, and a very open space with nice tables and nice details. We loved the music too! The service was better than expected too. Super nice staff who are very attentive. The food and drinks were also very good. Yes, it is a little expensive here for what it is but I think it's about the experience here too. It's worth the extra price in my opinion. We got the broccolini and chicken cracklin, wagyu egg rolls, lobster and black garlic dumplings, pork wontons in chili oil, pork belly fried rice, and the soup dumplings. The food was super good and we were surprised how good it was. We didn't mind paying the price because we were left so satisfied! The sauces you get and the texture on the dumplings were delectable. The egg rolls were huge and I wish it came with 4! Huge pieces of pork belly scattered around the fried rice too which was nice. The only thing is the broccolini and chicken crackling was very different looking than advertised for us. Very little cracklin and we felt like it was just crumbs. The broccolini was perfect though. For drinks we got an old fashion, white wine, and the eastern medicine. Cocktail menu is diverse and the flavors of the drinks worked super well. We also found it weird that the still water and the do sparkling water were set at the same high price of $9. Overall we had a very good experience here. It was a lot of fun and we were grateful to dine at this fun new spot. Even with a couple of the negatives I would give it 5 stars. Went last Friday, with my boyfriend, 3 month anniversary, cute times ofc ofc. The ambiance and staff were absolutely wonderful, some of the coolest decor I've seen in a while and the kindest waiters. The food on the other hand? We went expecting an excellent experience all around, especially given the price. But the portions were abysmal and the taste and flavor just was not there whatsoever. If you're looking for a bland and lackluster yet expensive meal, then please this is just the spot, if not even Panda Express packs a better punch in flavor for a better price. It has all the ingredients (literally) to be a great spot for a fun fancy dinner, just gotta kick it up several notches in actually tasting like *something*. Everything took long to get to us, and we only ordered two of the three things pictured (the baby corn was "out of courtesy"). Is this traditional dim sum? No, but the creativity manifest in this small menu abounds. There are a couple of mod asian joints in town, but this one does it right. The expectations are high with talent coming from Bird&Co, Central Provisions, and Earth at Hidden Pond. The atmospheric transformation from Old Port Tavern is spectacular with an updated subterranean feel, art, marble & silk decor, booths, and comfy chair corners. Absolutely spotless service; warm, welcoming, and informative. The Lucky Martini was remarkably unique with sesame washed vodka and optional caviar stuffed olives. All the dishes we had were excellent: Char Siu Bao, Lobster & black garlic dumplings, Sichuan Cucumbers, and Fois Gras & Blackberry Dumplings. Delectable! The only downside is some exorbitant pricing; way beyond usual upscale Portland duning. But still we will be coming back soon. read more

Wow!!! my husband and I are complete food snobs, and for me to write a five star review is unheard of. This is by far the best restaurant we have been to in years! The cocktails and food were absolutely amazing. You have to try the mini corn and steak pao . The jaded lover is such a dreamy cocktail! I would drive the six hours from home to visit this restaurant again! Amazing! Thank you for making our anniversary such an exceptional experience! read more
