This place was cool. We went with a party of 10 people in celebration of my cousin's graduation from UAlbany. All around very good food, no complaints. The mussels were awesome, the hummus/babaganush was great and my pasta dish was really delicious. I ate the spicy sausage, chicken and shrimp over linguini, it was really well done. We ordered the lobster mac n' cheese to share for the table - it was SO rich and heavy.. personally I loved it but a lot of people couldn't handle how rich it was. It must've been a 3 pound caserole dish - dangerous to order for your entree... great idea to split amongst a big table for sampling. We got a monster triple layer German chocolate cake for desert, custom made by the chef and it was incredible. I can't comment on the standard desert menu because we didn't try anything from there, but I imagine they're great, just like this cake. This romantic date night spot is tucked away in a strip mall which is why I was so surprised by how good the meal was. The hostess podium is awkwardly placed midway into the restaurant, but once we were seated we were on the way to Mediterranean goodness. The warm pita bread served with hummus (drizzled with oil = legit) was excellent. The bread warm and soft. The hummus just enough garlic and salt, creamy chickpea goodness. I ordered the chicken kabob salad. The salad itself was wasn't anything too exciting. I would have preferred the cucumber and tomato be chopped up smaller, for aesthetics and convenience. It was also served with a cucumber vinaigrette, except that it tasted like a tomatillo cilantro dressing which was ok but bitter for my taste and would have been much better with a tzatziki dressing or their homemade balsamic dressing which was excellent when I stole a couple bites of my husband's salad. The chicken was excellent, though grilled on the skewer, it was juicy and bursting with flavor. The best chicken kabob I've had in the area! My husband ordered the Portuguese chicken and chorizo with a side of julienned vegetables which he loved. The chorizo was a little more sausage a little less chorizo by my standards but the chicken was juicy and tender. Service was ok, it seemed they were a little understaffed. Ambiance is romantic, dark, and intimate. Service was fast! We closed the meal with gelato which we couldn't pass up after seeing all the options when we walked in. We ordered pumpkin and rocky road. Honestly it wasn't as smooth and delicate and I would have liked. After reading all the rave reviews about this place I think we will give it another try sometime in the future because I'd like to try some of the other items on their menu. read more

We loved our first dining experience at Sage Bistro. Shortly after we arrived, we were served hummus and pita to start which put me in a great mood...who doesn't love hummus?! We proceeded to ordered the scallop and shrimp capri and the creamy pesto chicken. The capri was loaded with seafood including crab meat. The creamy pesto chicken contained chicken breast sauteed in pesto sauce with tons of mozzarella cheese. Both entrees were served with a nice, meaty slice of toasted garlic bread for the win. Overview: wow! This is some of the best food in general that you will ever try. Now, I'm a huge fan of Mediterranean-middle Eastern food so I may be bias but it is hands-down the best in its category. The back dining area is small with booths and tables. There's a kitchen in the back as well as a smaller preparing area in the front behind the counter, which is where your salads and hummus come from. The hummus is always superb and they bring it out with warm pita. If you're just stopping by and don't have time for a sit-down meal, grab some gelato! This is a classic Italian ice-cream and sage bistro offers a huge variety of flavors. Flavors from blurry to hazelnut you won't be disappointed. Try a few flavors together with an extra scoop! It's a good reason to stop by and a good desert to every meal. Food: My favorite food at sage bistro are their dinner salads. So many to choose from!! The cucumber dressing is by far the best so give that a try! For an app it's always good to start with the sampler, for $13 you can try all the dips they have to offer, you will not be the slightest bit disappointed. The calamari is always a good choice as well. I like to try to stick to a pescatarian diet the most I can, so I like ordering the salmon salad, which is a big piece of grilled salad on a bed of lettuce and veggies, or the Greek salad with falafel. The Greek salad is incredibly tasty because it has grape-leaves, kalamata olive, and feta cheese as well as all the veggies that are on the house salad. You can ask them to put salmon on your Greek salad as well. If you're going to go without a salad the salmon by itself served with jasmine rice is delicious. If you wanna go with chicken, salad with chicken kabob! (Preferably the Greek salad) the kabob has great seasoning and it's big as-well-as being cooked to perfection. For a helpful hint go to sage bistro for lunch to save about 2 dollars on all meals. Speaking of lunch. If you can get out of the house Wednesday-Saturday during the day go get a falafel wrap! You will be so happy you got lunch at Sage bistro! Drink: The French martini!! Not like your classic vodka martini, this ones meant to be sweet. Usually prepared with chambord it tastes like a spring night! Try the sea-glass Riesling for a treat for the taste-buds! I'm a white wine drinker so this is for sure my favorite on the menu, -not-too-sweet-not-too-dry. As goldy-locks would say it's "just right." The food at Sage Bistro is outstanding! I have visited regularly for about 5 years and have never been disappointed. The meal starts with warm pita triangles and yummy hummus. All meals come with a generous salad. My husband recently had the lentil soup which was a special. The seasoning and texture made it a winner. Spices are used generously to give all food it's great flavor. My favorite is the house salmon which has a Cajun rub and lemon dill butter. My husband loves the Portuguese chicken. I've been coming here with my family regularly since it opened years ago, and it is tried and true. Definitely the best pita in Albany, and the hummus it comes with is delicious. Hidden gem! The food & service here is top notch. Perfect ambience for a date night. The hummus is delicious. I ordered my salad with the cucumber dill dressing which was very tasty. I've had the filet mignon as well as the chef's favorite salmon, and I nearly cleared my plate with both. Not too heavy, either, which was a plus. My boyfriend & I ordered a scoop of vanilla gelato to share, and it was a little grittier than we expected it to be. There is a huge selection of gelato, however. No bang for the buck. Pricey place with no atmosphere, and okay food. I got the lamb kebab on a salad, the salad had nothing but lettuce and a tomato, the kebabs were pretty tasty. I ordered a cocktail and it wasn't nearly as cold as it should have been. The hummus starter was the high-lite of the meal. The gelato was grainy, I don't think the sugar melted while they were making it. To top it all off the place closes at 9-p.m. on a Friday night! I absolutely LOVE Sage Bistro. It is hands-down my favorite restaurant in Guilderland - nay, in all of Albany. My husband and I have been here countless times for dinner as well as lunch, and we are never disappointed. The hummus and pita is exceptional. The cucumber vinaigrette is my favorite salad dressing in the entire world, and I wish they sold it by the bottle! I've had the clam linguine (now called linguine with cockles,) the steak with mashed potatoes and asparagus (with delicious bleu cheese dressing atop the steak - cooked to perfection,) the creamy chicken pesto over farfalle pasta. Last night I tried the Absolute Chicken (chicken over linguine in a vodka cream sauce with shallots and proscuitto - AMAZING!) For lunch, I've had many a panini, the falafel wrap, and my personal favorite - the Greek wrap, stuffed to the brim with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, feta, kalamata olives, and hummus). The lunch prices are a real deal, and the dinner prices are perfect for what you are served - you get pita and hummus, as well as a salad to start. Then you get a delicious, hot, flavorful meal (and quite a large portion, too!) It's WELL worth the $20-30 per person. Just make sure you save enough room for the gelato! Check the case when you enter the restaurant to see which ones are new and nearly overflowing with goodness to ensure that you get the freshest flavors. My girlfriend and I came here for lunch the other day, she had been before and liked it, and we are both vegetarian, so it has many options for us. We started off with the Sampler Platter of Hummus, Babaganoush, Feta Salad and it came with Tapenade, which we substituted for more Hummus because the tapenade has anchovies. It was servecd with warm pita, grape leaves, olives, cucumber and tomato. I enjoyed the sampler platter, the hummus and babaganoush were well flavored, and it was a big portion. The feta salad was yummy as well. I didn't care for the grape leaves a whole lot, they were mushy. We also ordered the Greek salad and had falafel put on top. The falafel was ok, I've def. had better before, but the salad was very large, and we actually tried out a few different salad dressings on the side that were tasty. Overall it was a good lunch experience, the ambiance was nice, the service was good...and it was not too pricy, especially if you are sharing with others. I would go back for lunch, I don't know if I would go for dinner. read more

Visited for the first time last night. There was a spot at the bar. No bartender, all servers must make his own drinks. Thought that was odd. Took several minutes to receive a drink, even more to receive our single menu without the specials. Without a bartender, bus boys or a front end manager, sitting at the bar gives a great view of the operational inefficiencies you might imagine. Instead there is a roaming magician (think Flea meets Heat Miser) who will hover at your table for 10 minutes doing card tricks. Seriously. If he could bus tables, scoop gelato and pour drinks, he'd be much more useful. Food was outstanding,from the warm pita and freshly made hummus to our lobster Mac and Cheese and the Sea Bass and jasmine rice. The salad was the only misstep, with just a tomato wedge as a break from lettuce. Since the starter and entrees were so tasty we forgave the lettuce dish. We will return, we look forward to exploring the menu. Hopefully Jason the magician will have an apron and a usefulness to the restaurant. read more

The service was friendly, Very knowledgeable - she answered very specific questions about why a meal was good and what flavors worked etc. The dinner portions were very large so we had leftovers for lunch the next few days :). First time here and came due to the high praise in the reviews in yelp and elsewhere. I was not disappointed. Instead of the traditional bread and oil, they served hot toasted pita bread wedges with hummus! It was a welcomed change and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My friend had the sirloin steak, medium, and it was delicious. The caramelized onions on them were great. My Brother had the Absolute Chicken, and it was great. The vodka sauce was really good and the chicken was well cooked. As for me I had the Salmon Provencal and it was very well cooked, it was flakey and soft and was poured with this form of salsa and olives. I had the summer sangria and for the $8 or so that they were, it seemed like they were a little small in size for the dollar amount. Overall, very pleased with the meal and will come back again with my parents or other friends for a fancier dinner. read more

Went to Sage with a group of 4 for dinner. We all enjoyed our meals, which were varied. The starter hummus is really good but garlicy. I happen to love garlic, so it worked out well for me. I had the Absolute Chicken pasta and was impressed. The serving size was good and the sauce was great. The salads that come with the entrees are plain, but the dressings are great. I highly recommend the cucumber vinaigrette which is spicy and fantastic. We all had gelato for dessert which was so-so when it comes to gelato. More like regular ice cream was the group's opinion. All in all, we enjoyed the experience and will return. A couple of tips: 1. Make a reservation. The place is small and seems to be a lot more popular lately. We tried to go last week and had too long of a wait (ended up going to Doratos down the block which is also good). 2. If you are going to use coupons, be wary of the weekly specials. I had dinner at Sage Bistro in February and thought it was excellent, with an imaginative menu, good food, and efficient service. I went back tonight, unfortunately during Restaurant Week, but, after having had such a pleasant experience previously, I was confident that Sage Bistro would again please. The staff was unable to keep up with the demands of a crowded restaurant. We were seated for 15 minutes before we received the additional two menus that our party of four needed or drink orders were taken. The water glasses were long empty, and we were chewing on the remaining ice, before they were refilled. One server seemed so nervous that she could not commit to placing a salad in front of one of the party, although everyone but me had ordered the same dressing. My entree was dull and uninspired. The salmon was dry and had no discernible seasoning. The brown rice was brown in color but was not "brown rice;" rather, it was reminiscent of a boxed rice pilaf mix. I was sorely disappointed and do not expect to be returning to Sage Bistro in the future. read more

Fabulous food and a relaxed ambiance. The sampler appetizer was delicious and cucumber vinegarette dressing was different and made the salad. Most of all, the service was just great. We were a party of six without a reservation on a busy night but the manager, Jonathan, was completely unfazed and quickly accommodated and actually served us himself. My wife and I and even our kids love to find new places to eat that are not the corporate chains. We moved to Albany from NJ a year ago and have been struggling finding good places to eat. Well we were pleasantly surpised at this little non descript place. Shopping center it is in is not much but once inside very nicely done atmosphere. Good service and the food... well it was great! They started out with great warm pita bread with some great tasting hummus. great calamari perfectly fried not heavy.
