We didn't have reservations but they kindly squeezed us in, which we were grateful for as we got to enjoy the experience of their delicious food, drinks and great service! Sadly disappointed...really wanted to love this restaurant based on how we discovered it, walking by feeling drawn to the ambiance and friendly hostess. The sage fried chicken is worthy 4-5 stars, their so claimed best dish, announced by 3 different servers, linguini nero, was 3 stars at most because garlic and citrus took over the pallet. Service 2.5 Stars. The hostess who walked us to a high top right across the bar was crowded and after she asked us if it was a special occasion (anniversary) we didn't get offered a better table (note we made s reservation in advance) and at the least we expected attentive service but had to flag down staff to refill empty water glasses and would have loved a 2nd glass of wine with dinner but again our waiter allowed us to sit with empty glasses.... The restaurant was busy when we sat down but at the end of dinner after coffee, nobody checked on us, staff kept walking by without paying any attention and note at this point there was more staff than guests. After the 3rd time asking for our check and the 3rd time asking for someone to run our card it had soured our special occasion to the point we would not recommend it or return. Filled with tourist, it's important to create an experience and not rest on the chef or ambiance. The price point suggested a high level of dining "experience". Better food, better price point available in immediate distances. read more

This place is BEAUTIFUL. While walking in the city center of San Jose del Cabo, we can across this gem and decided to make a reservation on the following night for our special dinner on our last night. It would have been perfect except our seat was in a secluded corner next to the a large party table. We were the only 2 seater placed in that area. It was unfortunate that the party was VERY loud and not considerate but I understand it was a celebration for them as well. Atop of that, our service took a total time of 2 hours and we only ordered cocktails, appetizers and our entrees. It just happened to be that someone "dropped orders" so the back was scrambling to get orders out. They provided us a complementary dessert as an apology but we were so preoccupied by the group next to us and waiting for service/food. Not a favorite. The ambience is great. The fried sage chicken was great. The burrata app was pretty good. Everything else, not so much. The black linguini was overpowered by garlic and...lime? citrus? Someone needs to retaste it before all staff claim it's the best thing on the menu. It was our worst item, but it had so much potential. It could easily be the best thing on the menu, if someone would taste it. Service was quite bad, which is criminal at this price point. Once our orders were taken, we were completely ignored. It was busy when we sat, but less so later, so maybe too many staff and not enough patrons let everyone think everyone else had tables covered? We had to keep asking for water (bottled). We never got a wine refill. We had to keep asking for our check and then wait and wait for someone to run the card. "Sorry, we're busy" doesn't work when you have more staff than patrons. And we weren't the only ones looking for attention. All in all, a place we expected to like that didn't like us back. There are better places nearby (one is almost across the street) that are priced more correctly with better food and far better service. Carpe diem. read more

We only ordered two dishes and a drink. The beet salad was good, but not great. To our taste the cashew crema in it was too sweet - almost like cashew butter. Sommelier's attitude leaves much to be desired. he denied having Italian whites until we asked captain and then behaved like a lout until we requested he stayed away from our table. To note so, is the fact that all 4 wine glasses were stained. Wow, my new favorite restaurant in San Jose! I've been going to SJDC for over 20 years and there are many very good restaurants there now. But Sage is at the top of the heap! The menu is really interesting. Interesting drinks, try the pineapple aperol sprtiz!!! Only suggestion is to expand the wine list. They make a fried chicken that is out of this world (big enough for two). My husband had the Sugo pasta w big chunks of tender beef. Came for dinner on a weekday while on a vacation and pleasantly surprised by the quaint decor. Menu was not overwhelming- ordered the kampachi and cauliflower for appetizers. The kampachi with mole sauce was excellent and even the cauliflower had herbs and seasonings and very tasty. Ordered the bass for the main course and even that was excellent. Honestly, one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. For one, the two main guys working gave an art exhibit vibe: snobby and pretentious. The appetizer that they suggested (ie being more expensive than the one we had our eye on) was the meatballs. 1) they were super small for roughly $25 for five SMALL pieces and 2) they were super tough from being over cooked. Flavor was okay. 4/10. I ordered the sea bass (again the more expensive option of the ones I was picking from that they said I just had to get). It was cooked fine but nothing to write home about. 5/10. I did bite into not one but TWO pieces of charred woodchips from their salad (so weird that the salad was charred. It looked like wilted lettuce). I can still taste the charcoal and feel the bite of it. GROSS. When we brought it to their attention, they did not apologize whatsoever. Pretentious dude 1 just said "that's funny because we don't char the sea bass". Okay? What was I gonna do? Char my own wood chips and bring them to this restaurant and place them in my own food? And also, we said it was in the salad, NOT the sea bass itself. They just walked off and didn't say anything. I would have settled for a "sorry" or "let me inform the chefs" but nothing. We weren't even being rude about it so I don't think customer service would've been hard to even fake. It took us 20 minutes to get the check. The lady comes by your table to close the check. Of course they didn't comp the meal that had not one but TWO charred pieces of wood in it. She asks about if we'd like to add a service fee (tip) and I said nope. Mind you, I never not tip. I start at 20% and go down from there if needed. She asks us about what happened and in the middle of us telling her, she's STILL charging me and interrupts to ask that I sign the tablet. After she charges me, she then wants to ask if she can get the manager. Uh, for what? You already charged me and Mr. Pretentious didn't care to begin with. Subpar food. The only plus is that the architecture has great attention to detail but that's about where the attention ends. Screw this place! read more

Nice place food very well prepared. But service inconsistent. We had two cocktails, oysters,fried chicken, pasta, one glass of wine and a chocolate desert. Sommelier suggested a glass of wine and asked if I wanted it now or when my main dish arrived. I said with the meal. Main dish came no wine. Had to inform two of their staff before I got it. When we finished we told the bus that we wanted to take the remaining piece of fried chicken back with us. Bill came no chicken they threw it out. Waiter apologized but no offer of any compensation. We showed up 10 minutes early for our reservation, checked in and were told to wait a minute to be seated. After 20 minutes a separate person asked us if we had a reservation. The whole time we were literally waiting on the street. When we told her that we had already checked in she was confused and brought us into a nice waiting area with seating. WTF?!? When we finally were given a table, it was at the furthest corner of the restaurant. We asked for a heat lamp as it was chilly and most tables had one but were told that they couldn't bring one because of the low ceiling in our area. 20 minutes later a table was seated just 10 feet away and they were given a heat lamp. It is of note that they were not Americans; we were. In general the food was creative, but missed the mark, particularly the bone marrow pasta which had an odd combination of raw shrimp and bone marrow. The pasta, though, was phenomenal. All in all, it was not a great experience for my family. We were overlooked, ignored and marginalized at a very high price point. read more

WOW!! First time dining there last night. Beautiful space with perfect music (and volume) in the background. The staff was very professional and timely. Our waiter, Abel, was the best. The courses were delivered promptly; the pasta dishes were still steaming and absolutely delicious; the fish was outstanding and beautifully presented. We had read reviews complimenting the food and critical of the service. Last night both were excellent. It was a great dining experience and I highly recommend trying it.
