- A Practice in Decline I want to be upfront: I previously gave Sage Veterinary Care 5 stars, and that rating reflected a genuinely excellent practice. This review reflects an entirely different experience under their current operation. My family has two golden retrievers -- Koda (1.5 years) and Howie (6.5 years) -- and we have experienced repeated scheduling failures over the past several months, including confirmed appointments being rejected after the fact. Today was the final straw. I drove to the clinic, brought my dog in for pre-operative blood work ahead of a scheduled neutering next week, waited while they took him back -- and then was told in person that they don't have enough staff scheduled for his surgery date. No phone call. No message. No heads up of any kind. Just: come in, wait, and oh by the way, we don't know when we can reschedule you. That is completely unacceptable. This information was known before my appointment. A 30-second phone call would have saved the trip, the wait, and the stress on my dog. Instead, the burden was placed entirely on us to show up and find out in person. This is a pattern with this practice since their previous veterinarians left. We have been rejected for scheduled appointments multiple times across both dogs. The communication failures are consistent and the operational instability is real. We are done. Both dogs are moving to a new provider effective today. I genuinely hope they can turn things around, but I cannot in good conscience recommend Sage Veterinary Care in their current state and for the safety of our dogs. read more

The staff is great with the animals. Unfortunately, not so good with the humans. Understaffed appears to lead to poor and unproductive communication regarding the needs of the pet. I have been a customer since the practice was first opened. Unfortunately, to ensure the needs of the pet are met, I have moved on. Very upset my fur babies will now need to establish care elsewhere. Really love how the staff cares for animals. Hopefully, the understaffed stress issues is resolved and the practice can get it together. Dr. Hess was amazing but I have not seen her recently. The doctor we did see is a "Karen" and maybe should not be customer facing. 2 weeks to get a written RX to fill at Costco or elsewhere seems a little excessive. The price of RX at vet is crazy expensive. If anyone is looking for a job with a vet, maybe hit this practice up for an opportunity. Unfortunately didn't have a good experience with this vet. The front desk staff are great, kind, and helpful. For that I give a star. Otherwise, it would be none. Dr. H was very condescending as well as her tech. I wouldn't recommend her. My friend had a better experience with a different doctor. I felt pushed and almost "feared" into taking a vaccine for my dog. They talked to me like I was stupid and felt lectured for giving my dog ONE chicken nugget within the past month. I was just trying to be honest, but it backfired and they completely ignored that fact and acted like I'm killing my dog. Gawd forbid she has a cheat day. I've seen other dogs live in harsher conditions that surely live a long life. I understand education, but to do it in such a rude and condescending manner is ridiculous. My dog is in great healthy shape. I do my best to provide a thriving lifestyle (nutritional diet, good physical activities, training, lots of love). I did not get one nice or welcome acknowledgment on her health status. Instead, I felt judged and profiled right from the start. TLDR: stay away from The Vet Kelly Malinas Been going to this place for years and It's crazy how one bad experience can ruin everything. Based on other reviews, I'm not alone with a bad experience with Malinas. I did have great experiences with Dr. Hess though, Dr. Hess is great. One day, I set up an appointment last minute. Malinas came marching in there and started berating me immediately. She was extremely rude and she made it feel like an interrogation. It was weird, like she was trying to argue and catch me in a lie. She seemed like she was venting at me for w/e insecurities she's currently going through. I was holding my cool the best I could and tbh, I shouldn't of even paid for that visit because of how disrespectful she was. Not surprised that everyone else is voicing the same opinion on other reviews about her. If you're going to set up an appointment, make sure you request Dr. Hess. Dr. Lindsay did an incredible job. We just moved here to Sparks and our huskies were due for their vaccines. I called a couple of vet closer to me but none were accepting new pets. I asked if they knew of a vet that would take new pets and they said Sage along with another. I called Sage and they were able to work with me to schedule an appointment asap that would also work around my work schedule. Once I got there, I did need to wait 15 minutes into my appointment, but once they started the exam, it was the most thorough exam I have ever seen my dogs. Dr. Lindsay was very gentle and calm with them and explained everything that she was doing to them. One of the dogs is a senior and he needed blood work. They were happy to do it right then even though the office was suppose to be closed already. The dogs got lots of treats and I really think they had a good experience compared to other places. I've now been coming here for 4-ish years and still feel strongly about this Veterinary office. The staff here is amazing, especially during the pandemic. They have very specific procedures and protocols in place but their service doesn't doesn't make it feel like you're getting any less involved because you're not physically present (I'm also a nurse so I am extra anal when it comes to these things). All of my questions and concerned are still answered thoroughly with or without the DVM on the phone. I have multiple fur children and I specifically and strategically take them to all different places (1 dog, 2 cats) just so I can get a feel for other places. Because my dog is extra needy and has special needs, I am extra picky when it comes to her; Sage Veterinary Care definitely meets my needs. Just recently my dog cracked her back molar on an ice cube, I also had no idea when this happened. They really accommodated and did their very best to squeeze her in to take care of the tooth quickly just so then she didn't have to be in pain. The other vet offices that I take my kitties to (who don't require much and rarely goes to the vet) are great, but this place is exceptional. PS. as a nurse we love it when patients brings in treats... so you can for sure bet an extra thank you treat for the veterinary office will be greatly appreciated. read more

I would give the staff of Sage a 5/5, but we had two big experiences with one of the doctors that became traumatic experiences. 1. While in for our initial exam with two new kittens, I had mentioned that our last cat, who I had had a very special bond with, died of a clot and a heart murmur. We then started talking about food and she mentioned grain free food could cause heart disease. My face dropped and I started to get teary eyed and her response was "Oh no. You fed him grain free." We then were given a lecture on grain free food and heart disease in animals while I was crying because I thought I had killed my cat. Luckily, my sister in law is a vet, and she told me that was untrue. 2. One of our kittens was a little lethargic and had a very high respiration rate between 45-70. We took him in and were told he was just "an anxious kitty." Less than a week later he was vomiting blood and was hospitalized with dangerously low platelets and WBCs. He almost died. We have now spent over $6000 to treat either an infection, or an autoimmune disorder that we would have been able to help sooner if the doctor had just drawn his blood when we brought him in. I know there are a lot of mixed reviews for this office but I can only speak on my experience. I have been going there for about 3 1/2 years now. I can honestly say everyone of the people that I have interacted with have been extremely kind and loving towards my dogs. There have been times that they have suggested certain test and treatments that I didn't necessarily feel the need to do and they never pushed for me to do them. I feel that they suggest what they feel is needed but have never been pushy about anything. I never felt they were trying to sell me anything. I know it can be pricey but I have felt safe with bringing my fur babies to them. Unfortunately, one of my babies died at home and I brought him in after. They all made me feel so comforted. I say this because at the end of the day I am sure they go through deaths a lot more then we do. However I felt like it was all about us when I went through it. Absolutely not accommodating and rude vet technician, not to mention false advertising. When your answering service says same day appointments and urgent care, you should abide by that. On top of that I spoke with the receptionist Mon June 27th and she advised me to call first thing in the morning for an urgent care appointment and that they filled up by 8:30 every morning. Called at 8:01am and left a message this morning. No call back. Called again at 4:30 and spoke with a very rude female employee that told me they were down a receptionist. I explained my situation and that the lady I spoke with yesterday said to call in the morning. She very rudely responds with "we don't do that". So which is it, you do or don't?! I lost my trust in this place over the weekend after bringing in my dog for her vaccination for Rabies. The person on the phone said she was due for 4 shots- Rabies, Parvo, Heartworm and one other I can't remember. She said my little 14 lb. dog could get all the shots that day. I said no, thinking that is way too much for her little body and the woman suggested I do 2: Rabies and Parvo. Also, My dog takes heartworm medicine that I bought at Sage, so why did they recommend she get a shot too? I was told that a visiting "guest" vet would be taking care of my dog. I didn't like this, but it seemed I had no choice but to have this new person inject my dog. Since Sage doesn't let you inside since Covid, I never met this person. After bringing her home, she didn't move for 24 hours on her own accord. I had to pick her up to take her out to go to the bathroom. She had runny poo and she didn't eat or drink either. Her body was super hot as well. I gave her droppers of water to keep her hydrated. In the morning I called and left a message reporting what had occurred and the man I spoke to said, "Bring her in as soon as you can, it sounds like she has had an abnormal reaction to the shots. We need to check her vitals." So I cancelled an appt. I had so that I could take her to Sage. After examining her, the Dr. Hess called me to discuss her condition and pretty much back-peddled what the man on the phone had said. Every symptom I had reported was now explained away as , "She's a nervous dog and you said she got like this after grooming." NO. Two times in 4 years she had a reaction to the grooming, hardly a precedent. "You said she gets diarrhea, so that is just her normal thing." NO. Once in a while she does, and as I told them, it's usually after we give her a little apple or banana. Not a precedent. Dr. Hess was on the phone with me for about 20 minutes or more trying to convince me that NOTHING that had occurred had anything to do with the shots she had received. I felt like either the "guest vet" had messed up her dose or they were not happy that someone had suggested she had a bad reaction- such a big effort was put into telling me how these responses were normal. I didn't feel listened to, I felt countered. I felt the health feedback I had given was twisted to make a case for why my dog had been so catatonic for 24 hours. It was unsettling and it broke any trust I had with the vet. I've decided to take my dog elsewhere in the future. read more

Once they get your business they no longer work toward keeping it. Have you bring your pet in and leave it all day, for a 2 hour procedure.....so they can get to the procedure when it suits them. I am a travel nurse here helping out with the Covid pandemic, and everywhere that I go my sweet pup Sadie goes with me. So when the time came this year for her annual checkup and vaccines, I turned to my trusty Yelp app to find a great vet in the area since I'm not from here. I could not be more happy with my experience with Sage Veterinary Care! I got a reminder call before my appointment which is great for me because even though I keep a calendar, sometimes I get my days confused with my fluctuating schedule. When I got to the clinic I called them and let them know I was there, and someone came out and got Sadie. The appointment was quick, she was back out in probably 15-20 minutes. The vet called me after her exam to go over everything, and I was impressed with how thorough she was even without me in the room. She caught some things I had forgotten to mention since it was our first time visiting/I had forgotten to give the info in her history. She answered all my questions and I felt reassured that I had made the right choice with Sage Vet afterwards! I got a great deal on Heartgard and Nexgard on their website after my visit, it was even cheaper than on Chewy. The particular Dr we saw was condescending & lectured us on pretty much everything we were doing with our dog. She has ZERO patience for dogs that are scared & didn't even complete the exam, saying our dog was a "problem dog". Yet of course, we were charged full price. Our dog is sweet and has never acted the way he did that day....he was terrified of her, and honestly, so was I! She was so rude & patronizing to her vet tech, I don't understand how anyone can work with this lady. I will NEVER step foot in this place again. Judgmental, accusatory and poor bedside manner. I was referred to Sage Veterinary Care by a friend who raved about their service. The appointment scheduling process was excellent and their administrative staff is wonderful. I warned them before the appointment that my dog is shy and skittish with new people. The vet I spoke with left much to be desired. Due to COVID my dog had never been fully examined or entered a vet's office in her little life. She had vaccinations and a mini wellness exam through a local shelter that was providing puppy vaccinations while COVID had shut down most vet's office from accepting new patients. To provide context, my dog has never bitten anyone, she LOVES children, is affectionate but, hates new males and people with masks. She is intelligent and assesses her safety before warming up to someone- she has never attempted to bite anyone- EVER. I have immersed her as much as possible; she goes into my office and is friendly with all my coworkers, she goes into many stores that allow pets, she attended my outdoor wedding with many people she had never met and was a gem. All this to say that this vet assumed that my dog is poorly socialized. I was informed at that she "tried to bite" the vet tech and vet after being dragged on a leash by a strange male into a building in which she has never been only to be poked, prodded and muzzled. She was terrified and scared- I would be too. I was scolded that my dog is poorly socialized and that I needed to enroll her in classes (which I had planned on if COVID hadn't made it difficult to attend a class). I would also like to point out that I socialize her with at least 6 other dogs on a regular basis in a neutral environment. The vet didn't even ask if I tried to socialize her- she quickly assumed that it's the dog's fault. The icing on the cake is that she was friendly with all the other staff in the office after her exam. I agree with the vet that she needs work on her social skills but, the vet's approach was accusatory, rude, quick to judge and inappropriate. I personally work in a patient service industry and her approach is not at all acceptable. This vet lacked bedside manner, and leaves much to be desired. I have never been spoken to as a child and made to feel like a bad pet owner until this vet immediately proceeded to shred apart how I care for my pet and patronize me. All to say I was kicked out as a customer. I would not recommend this vet's office to anyone. Stay away if you are looking for bedside manner or your dog is "not properly socialized". read more

While TRYING to have a conversation with her, she continually cut me off, was only listening to argue back with me instead listen to hear what I was saying and in her words said if I wasn't happy with my experience, I could go look for services somewhere else. She didn't care one bit and wasn't listening when I was trying to explain to her about my dog. To me, how you treat me is a reflection of how you treat my dog & the services and care you are giving him. The tone of voice and 0 level of professional this woman had is absolutely disappointing. I had this same issue with Dr. Hess when they were treating my dog a few months prior. Same thing. Didn't hear me out, I felt judged especially with the amount of stress I was under. Some techs there are nice and have the common decency to greet you and use their manners. Others do not but then I noticed they greeted other races in the most cheerful happy manner. I wish I knew the names of all the techs that were nice but Ben (office manager who is also a tech) is the only one I completely trust and have respect for me. He takes the time to listen and truly cares about what you want for your pet. It's unfortunate that his physicians that work in the office are the worst I have ever dealt with and because of that, I will never take my pet here and will never recommend them to anyone! read more

I ended up having to put my 18 year old dog down and everyone was super loving and caring. I wish I remembered names. I should mention the euthanasia only cost me $125 and there was absolutely no pressure to spend more. At the end of February 2021, I rescued a purebred Golden Retriever from Fallon. The people who surrendered him put him in a crate, feed him let him out to do his business then back in the crate. No, he's not mean or vicious. Apparently a kid tried to take his food away from him while he was eating and he growled at them so this is the treatment he got. They over feed him till he was 30 pounds over weight then surrendered him. I rescued him threw away the fattening food I received, put him on a good quality weight management food and started walking him daily. I took him to Sage for a wellness check and the female vet. called me after seeing him. I told them all up front about him being a rescue. She was absolutely horrible to me on the phone, told me that just because I was giving him weight management food does not mean he's not going to gain weight and that I needed to walk him more and it would be beneficial for all involved. She proceeded to chastise me for giving him occasional treats and to put him on green beans and carrots. By the time I finally got him back I was in tears and thought I was a bad person. She did not even take in consideration that when I rescued him he was already overweight and was not being exercised at all. He spent a month and a half outside in Fallon during January and most of February. They were not helpful at all and like I said was absolutely horrible about the whole situation. I was suppose to take him back but have decided to find another veterinarian. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS OFFICE AT ALL. AND WILL NEVER RETURN! Even though it is just one mile from my home. Have nothing but good things to say about this vet. Most affordable vet in Sparks I could find, have never walked out feeling gutted. Dr. Malinas has been so sweet to me and my cat, Gaia. Closely monitored her teeth issues with me and provided complementary services to ensure my first few visits were great and within my budget. Dr. Hess was also great with my other cat. Without a doubt Dr. Kelly Malinas is the best. I began taking my border collie and maine coon to her when Daisy had split open a blister type hematoma on her eye lid. Thankfully Dr. Kelly was on that day and they were able to get her in for stitches. She later went to see Dr. Kelly many times as she advanced in age and Dr. Kelly was always responsive and caring. Next is Fedor. He had dental issues and had actually broken one of his fangs. Dr. Kelly performed dental surgery on him removing many of his teeth due to gum disease. He adjusted to the missing teeth but has now, 2 years later, developed pancreatitis which Dr. Kelly is treating him for. She's conscientious, caring and mindful of costs as a few examples she had me hold him when he had to have laser treatments on his gums rather than add the cost of a vet tech and recently she made sure a blood test was performed rather than extensive tests and X-rays to jack up the bill and had me come in for a refresher course with a technician on administering subcutaneous fluids to get flush his pancreas and get him on the road to recovery. I woke up this morning to find my buddy Robby was having a bad allergic reaction from what I believe to be a new fabric softener I started using. I was a mess. I've never had something like this happen to the poor guy. I lucked out that Dr. Kelly had a cancellation and was able to see him right away. The entire staff was absolutely amazing and came to my rescue. Dr. Kelly also gave me some tips for getting rid of residual fabric softener in the washer and his favorite blanket. We no longer have pets, but we have grand dogs. We had our son's 12'year old dog this week-end. She was suffering from leg/back weakness, and decided to call Sage Veterinary on Friday of Memorial Day week-end. (We feared this was her end of life stage). Instead of giving us the long week-end/early out brush-off, they apologized that we would not be seen until 5:30, but we were grateful they would remain available. From the minute we arrived, the staff treated Nala as their own. They immediately worked on making sure she was comfortable until she could be evaluated. Dr. Hess examined her, suggested a course of evaluation, and then provided us a cost estimate. We proceeded with the recommendation, and began treatment of pain shots and X-Rays. Dr. Hess used the X-rays to consult with us (ruptured disc) and gave us a step by step map to work for her recovery. We were super impressed with Dr. Hess and her staff, working late into the evening, showing extra care for our pet, and communicating very professionally and friendly, from the minute we made a phone call, until we left the hospital. Came in because my poor puppy had an ear infection. Staff was so nice. Made every effort for my dog to feel comfortable and that is not easy (he was hiding under the chairs). They were very warm and comforting. My last vet would just tell me what my dog need to have done and that was end of the story. No explanation. Dr.Hess sat for a good 10 min and fully explained why she wanted to do the tests. I really appreciate that. And I really appreciate the time she took with me and my puppy. Sage Veterinary Care and their staff literally saved my dog's life, and I'm profoundly grateful to Dr. Malinas, vet tech Ben, and vet assistant Forest for that. They went above and beyond. I'd just recently moved to Sparks, and did not yet have a local vet for my dogs - including a senior diabetic lab. Yesterday, my lab suddenly had a series of hypoglycemic seizures, as his blood sugar dropped to life-threatening levels. While trying to give him glucose gel myself, I also frantically Googled and called nearby vets so I could race him to a clinic for treatment. Without naming names, the first place I called asked if my dog was already their patient, then said there wasn't really anything they could do once I told them he wasn't (Hey... no judgement. Perhaps they felt they couldn't provide the necessary care under the circumstances and their reasons were valid. It happens. I mention it, though, to highlight just how out of their way and above and beyond Sage went to help). When I called Sage, though, their first question was "How soon can you get him here?". We carried then drove my seizing, unresponsive dog to Sage, and they were already coming out to assist as I pulled my car up front. Immediately, we carried my dog in to the back and on to an exam table, and they began to treat him - syringes of honey on to his tongue and gums, taking blood to measure his sugar levels and monitor them, etc. Never once during these initial frantic and vital moments did they get distracted by wanting paperwork or payment or anything - they just wanted to give my dog the treatment essential to raising his blood sugar and stabilizing him. The first time paperwork did come up, it was their forwarding test results and other info to a 24hr emergency facility that would be able to care for and monitor my dog overnight and to which we could transfer him after Sage stabilized him and got him out of his dangerous and near comatose state. Everyone at Sage was clearly focused on what every pet parent wants their vet focused on above all else - the well being of our pets. They were professional and compassionate; capable and caring. They were able to give my dog the emergency treatment he needed, and stabilize him so we could get him to a 24hr facility (Animal Emergency Clinic on S. Virginia, who were also great) after to be monitored overnight. Following such a frantic and panicked afternoon and evening, I'm now at home with my diabetic dog relaxing on the couch next to me comfortable and recovered. And we have found our new local vet. read more

They have shared laughs and tears with us with each pet, and incredible skill in turning around life threatening kidney failure in our 12 year old boy Jack. He is now 14 1/2 and going strong ! I've been taking my dogs here for a long time, I've finally had it. I like the vets, but it seems like they just keep nickel and dime you to excess. My daughter's dog had surgery and they wanted her to bring the dog in for a check (Friday), replaced the bandages without approval for $56. Come Monday they wanted remove the bandages from the Friday. This is the last time I will ever go to Sage Veterinary. read more

Do not go here, everyone here is incredibly rude! I have never been "fired" from a practice before in my whole life, because I'm not the kind of person to cause drama or anything. Kelly Melina's is the part owner, she is terribly rude. She not only made me feel bad about why I took my dog in in the first place, then said he might have an issue with his prostate (which was why i brought him in) but she was demeaning, she called me "kiddo", had a snappy tone and kept interrupting me. Not to mention they didn't tell me it was with this doctor instead. They had absolutely no customer service and i don't even want to know how they treated my dog behind closed doors. They also kept my dog till i gave them payment, she was totally rude to me out of no where then just straight up told me not to come back, they are psycho there and will freak out on your for whatever bad day they had. I am appalled, i said absolutely nothing to this women to make her treat me like that. then i tried to talk to her after she hung up on me and they wouldn't even talk to me! Please don't go here, absolutely disgusted with the people that work here. read more
