I've been seeing Dr. Rasmussen and Dr. Schroeder for almost 20 years old of combined care each at other hospitals. My cats, Elmer and Bonkers made it to two decades because of THEM. They have the best vet techs and front desk personnel I've ever seen. You can tell a lot about a practice by the quality of their support staff. Good luck finding better veterinarians anywhere. P.S. I have been a client of Southwest Veterinary for the last 6 years. I currently bring 3 dogs and 2 cats to see them. I was most recently in yesterday with 3 of the menagerie and they are just so great! They helped me get everyone in from the car and right into an exam room. They typically run right on time which is great with nervous animals. I really love that they are able to help me manage my pet care budget. With so many pets, care really adds up. They never try to up sell and are wonderful helping me prioritize what needs to be done. If you have a larger procedure, they provide an itemized treatment plan that includes all pricing. If things change during the procedure, the doctor will call for approval. I have found the quality of care to be excellent and all of the doctors very caring. I admit this review is late but I haven't been on Yelp for long so I'm playing catch up. The office itself is nice and the staff is friendly, that's the only reason they get 2 stars instead of one. My complaint is with Dr. Sarah Wilson. We were her patients when she was still with King's Row Pet Hospital, and we loved her. She was so kind and wonderful with our dogs. Then she moved to Southwest Veterinary Hospital. I don't know what happened, but apparently her ego got the best of her. She lost the compassion she once had. We brought our dog in with what we thought was a torn ACL. Boy, did she ever try to push the TPLO surgery on us. Repeatedly. Anyone that's ever done research on that surgery knows it's gruesome, expensive, has a high failure rate, and is now known to cause bone cancer. But she was relentless. What was worse, every time we brought our dog in, he would walk in fine, she'd do the drawer test, wrenching his knee into unnatural positions, and he'd walk out limping. For DAYS. Common vet practice, to do that in order to sucker someone into the TPLO surgery. Great way to make money off of hurt animals and scared pet parents. I am convinced she made his knees worse. Too bad I can't prove it. Classic veterinary scam. We have since found a wonderful vet. Our dog still struggles with problems with his knees, and we've chosen to go the bracing route. And it's done wonders for him. Our vet says that because of our dogs anatomy (he's a special needs dog with physical deformity) the surgery would be a BAD choice for him. His problem isn't torn ACL (which CANNOT be seen on regular X-rays, something Dr. Wilson didn't even do before immediately pushing surgery), his issue is more of a chronic condition. Braces and Vet's Best is working splendidly for him. We knew something was off with her when she suggested we soak his itchy paws in vinegar daily. Good grief. Can you see any dog standing still for that? And how nice must that feel, when paws are scratched bloody, vinegar in a wound? Seriously? Yeah. I wouldn't trust Dr. Wilson to take care of a stuffed animal, let alone my precious fur kids. Beware. read more

We take our dogs here to see Dr Martini. This is the first vet office that truly will do anything to help your animals. My dog Ava had a bulging disk in her back and the emergency vet pretty much told us we will have to put her down. Dr Martini gave her meds to help with inflammation and pain along with a cold laser treatment. My dog recovered and I am soooo thankful I didn't take the advice of the emergency vet office. read more

So very thankful, Came here today when I woke up to seeing my dogs mouth all swollen. Gave her Benadryl and no change. My brothers friend had suggested I come here and I'm so glad I did! They aren't accepting new clients but they made an exception for us. My dog needed a shot of steroids and allergy shot as well and to be taking more Benadryl at home. They answered all of my questions and were very helpful, from the front desk to the vet herself, and within 10 minutes of leaving her beautiful face was already going down and it's almost unnoticeable now. I noticed my 7 year old male house cat was having some blood in his urine. I took him to his regular vet. The vet did an ultrasound and saw there were crystals in his bladder. Their recommendation was surgery the next day and then have the stones sent to a lab to be cultured. I am always very hesitant of having anyone or any of my pets go under anesthesia, as there is a small chance they will not come out of it alive. So, I called a good friend of mine who is a vet in Missouri.I did some research on badder crystals and she gave me some great insight. The she told me to take my cat to a vet that she did her undergrad at UNR with. So now I am at Southwest Vet. My vet at Southwest decided to take a urine sample to see what type of bladder crystals. The type of crystals in his urine had a good chance that they could be dissolved by a medicated cat food diet and prescription medication. And not need an invasive surgery. So that is what we did for a month in a half. After 2 weeks of being on antibiotics and prescription cat food, he was back to his old self and had no more blood in his urine. I was very happy that we switched vets. I would much rather have my "kids" treated by a less invasive approach to fix their ailments then cut them open at $1,500.00. Yes, the cat meds and prescription cat food was pricey, about 40.00 for the meds that lasted 14 days and almost 1.75 a can of prescription cat food that lasted 2 meals out of 3 a day. But I know my "kids" depend on me to look out for their best interests. read more

I Woke up this morning to find that my mini aussie, Clyde had bloody diarrhea. I've always went to Klaich with my other pets but in recent years I've been dissatisfied with their service. I called at 7:30am and was able to get an appointment for 9:15. The girl on the phone was very friendly and professional. I got to the office around 9:05 and was taken back to the room immediately. This was Clyde's first visit to the vet and I didn't know how he would act. The vet tech (or whatever they're called) asked a lot of questions and made an effort to get Clyde comfortable before she started checking him out. Dr Wilson (I believe that's her name) came in and wanted to do a parvo test. For those who don't know, this test involves sticking a giant Q-tip up your dog's ass. Clyde was less than thrilled and squirmed around a lot. Neither the doctor not the tech ever seemed to get annoyed and they spoke to him in soothing voices the whole time. Parvo test was thankfully negative. X-rays were ordered. The X-rays took about 20-30 minutes. The doctor took her time answering my questions and explaining the X-rays in great detail. The staff was very knowledgable and seemed to genuinely care about my baby. Not once did they seem rushed. Overall, it was a great experience during a stressful time. I highly recommend them and will choose them the next time I need veterinary care. read more

I wish I could give six stars to this Vet!!! We have two bulldogs and to say that our Frenchie is high maintenance is the understatement of the century. He has had so many health problems and had been to numerous specialists in LA before we found Southwest Veterinary Hospital when we moved to Reno. Dr. Sargent sorted him out over a few months and he's never been healthier! Both dogs have had dental cleanings and surgeries here and done well. We've seen all of the Veterinarians and they are all outstanding! The facilities are clean, the staff is exceedingly friendly and helpful, and the prices are reasonable. I just joined yelp and I wanted this to be my very first review of a place. I'm not sure that my words will do this business enough justice, but I will try my best. There is not one single negative thing about this place. The facility is very clean. It has fun little slide shows of animals in the patient rooms(which I think is really fun =D ). They have an amazing staff, who are very helpful. Dr. Sargent and Dr. Rasmusson are both great vets. They have always been very thorough and provided both of my dogs with the best of care. I've spoken to both of them on the phone before when one of my dogs has had a problem, and they have talked me through everything so I fully understand what is going on. One of my issues with a previous place is that I felt my dog was just another number. I always had to explain to them what was going on with my dogs health, which would have hopefully been known if I didn't have a different vet every time I went. At Southwest Vet, it's not this way at all. It's much more personal, they know my dogs and their history, which is really important to me. Southwest Veterinary Hospital is the BEST! Great place to take two elderly dogs for care on a regular basis. Facility is clean and easy to access on Lakeside and Moana. This hospital is staffed by a consortium of veterinarians and technicians and all of them are professional, prompt, and friendly. Their bedside manner with the animals is, well, better than my own. Their hours are reasonable and they work with a network of other hospitals in the area to operate a 24/7 urgent care center on Del Monte lane. Definitely a hospital to take your dogs to. read more

All of the staff is exceptionally friendly, and what was most impressive is how much they remembered about the health and temperament of the pet I brought in! The animal technician was very detailed examining the pet and entering all of the information in the pet's record. The vet was extremely knowledgeable and explained in great detail the X-rays, pet's health status, and after care plan. The cost of the exam, medication, and X-rays was VERY reasonable.
