When my dog passed away at home after 13 wonderful years together, I was absolutely devastated. He wasn't just a pet he was my family, my best friend, and my son. Having to bring him to BluePearl Animal Hospital was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, but I can't thank the team enough for the compassion and kindness they showed me. I was so overwhelmed with grief that I couldn't even get him out of my car. Without hesitation, a staff member came outside, gently took him from my vehicle, and handled him with so much dignity and care. That simple act of kindness meant more to me than words can express. The entire process was made as easy as possible during such a heartbreaking time. I chose a private cremation, and when I received his ashes, they included a beautiful paw print, a certificate of cremation and his ashes in a wooden urn. We got there at 11:40 am waited until 2:20 pm and we still hadn't seen a vet. We were told they wanted to observed our dog but yet no one checked in on us regardless of their concerns. I agreed to take on a foster puppy that was coming in from out of town and I would be meeting for the first time at Blue Pearl. We had very limited information to give Dr. Marin but she listened to what we knew and started right away with a very thorough exam. She was extremely kind, compassionate, and very communicative throughout the process. Dr. Marin worked on the puppy throughout the night, called with an update, and met with me after already working for 12 hours to discuss the plan of care moving forward. Because of Dr. Marin, this little girl's future is very bright. I hope that if I have another pet emergency, Dr. Marin will be on staff! 11/23/24 Called prior to arriving and reception stated there was only one other patient- Mentioned that our boy dog may have injured his leg when he was going out the doggie door.. Four stars because the staff was very welcoming..provided bottles of water while we patiently waited- Glad we were able to get him in quickly and examined. They do the triage in a separate room ( which I like as I get a little stressed out being in the room seeing him in a discomforting state).. Dr. came in after assessing him..and gave the options of getting X-rays- $$$ Decided to wait on the x- rays.. Before we could get any pain medication they would have to do bloodwork. Sent home with a pain medication and carprofen... Disappointed that the receipt did not have his bloodwork results nor did they mention about the results, and no after care instructions. Wow very horrible! I brought my dog there because he has a very bad fall and he was screaming like crazy and I was very concerned. Found this place online and when in the morning we were put in the room and I was like this was pretty fast but no we waited 3 hours, my dog slept on the floor while we waited. He woke up wanted to go potty so we went for a walk and he seemed to be better. Walked back to the room and they went through a staffed changed. The nurse apologized and said it will be liked another two hours. ..... I left during the 4th hour. The universe told me to leave and I was very lucky my dog only sprained his body and I over reacted as a dog parent. I didn't get any treatment for my dog which is sad. They said they were understaffed, when I left 6 people at the desk lobby talking to each other and on their phones. Looked pretty understaffed to me. They probably didn't notice I left and I understand it's an emergency hospital but just imagine if your pet was bleeding to death and waited for 4 hour and die. But it didn't look like an emergency hospital for pets at all. But I won't come here again. The people here were really nice they needed to do better and it was not busy at all the parking lot was empty. read more

I honestly don't even want to be writing this review. It feels strange to give five stars for something tied to such a heartbreaking experience--but the compassion shown to us deserves to be recognized. A few days before we brought our girl here, she had been battling a series of infections and was being treated at urgent care. Just before what would have been her third visit, I had a gut feeling something was really wrong. We decided to take her to the emergency vet instead. Tragically, she passed away in the car on the way there. We arrived at this clinic in complete hysterics. The staff ran out to help immediately, took her inside, and tried CPR--but it was already too late. They gently brought her back to us in a private room and gave us time and space to say goodbye. They were kind, patient, and incredibly compassionate. We arranged for her cremation, and when I returned to pick up her ashes, I broke down again. Once more, the team treated me with so much empathy and care. I never got the chance to use the actual services we had scheduled--she was supposed to have a CT scan--but I'm grateful I now know this place exists. In one of the hardest moments of our lives, they treated us and our girl with true dignity and kindness. Thank you to the staff. I will never forget your compassion. read more

We unfortunately had to go here in the evening because our dog was having difficulty breathing and not doing well. It was for the worst and we unfortunately had to put our dog down. This place is the last place I would ever take my fur baby again! I went in here because my dog needed emergency care due to her spay incision being infected and I looked on yelp and google for reviews and they had decent ratings but boy was I fooled.. I came in at 11:40 am and was shoved in a tiny room with my dogs and kids and didn't get seen until 3:40 pm. When given my estimate I had animal balance on the phone as they were covering our payment and when asked why we were quoted at $2500 the doctor (LAURA MARIN) grabbed my phone and hung up on the caller as she felt offended to be questioned why the estimate was so high. After I signed off for treatment and they said I could come pick her up they informed me that they didn't even stitch up her incision after realizing it was open in a few different spots so now here I am at another er waiting to finally get my baby treated. My dog has anxiety and is very vocal. They took my dog for every exam and would not let me come and observe and they stuck her in a tiny kennel as when she was returned to me her cone was broken. She has had that same cone for a week and never once under our supervision or even left alone has managed to break it. It makes me wonder how they were treating her.. please don't waste your time or your fur babies on this HORRIBLE business. If you want an emergency room that cares, provides coloring pages for your kids and fixes your emergency room trauma quickly and professionally please choose animal emergency center. I truly can't say enough good things about our experience at this hospital. A few mornings ago, our dog suddenly couldn't walk, so we rushed her in. From the moment we arrived, the front desk staff was kind, welcoming, and immediately put me at ease. The tech who helped us was both professional and personable, explaining everything in a way that was easy to understand and exactly what we needed in that moment. I wish I remembered their names, because they were both incredible. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Being in the medical profession ourselves, we know what it's like to be on the other side of patient care, and they recognized that too. They did everything possible to make both us and our dog feel cared for and comfortable. Dr. Jenna Dinstell was our veterinarian that morning, and she was amazing to say the least. She quickly ordered tests and pain medication, and immediately picked up on neurological signs suggesting possible meningitis. She went above and beyond by reaching out to two different hospitals that had the right equipment for a diagnosis. We chose UC Davis, and she sent everything over ahead of time, letting them know we were on our way. When we arrived, UC Davis staff was ready for us and took us straight back because of her communication and preparation. What started as one of the worst mornings turned into a reminder that we were exactly where we needed to be. Thanks to the care, caution, and expertise of the entire Blue Pearl staff, and especially Dr. Dinstell, our girl is now doing better. We are so grateful. While I hope we never have to go through another emergency like that again, if we do, there's no question we'll be coming back here. read more

DO NOT VISIT!!! I visited here in November and had to wait 3 weeks just to be seen, VCA recommended us here and wanted Chubby to be SEEN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE for her condition at the time. First off I am 20 when writing this and Chubby had to be euthanized due to the conditions she was in. I had Chubby since I was 12 and she was euthanized on my birthday and passed in my arms. I tried the best I could with her I stayed up with her did medication we got from VCA and tried to make her comfortable. When we had gotten to BP the receptionist felt cold and had ignored me when I was checking out. We had seen Laura Quilling and she did a $280 exam and basically told us that Chubby had an infection somewhere in her ear or a tumor behind her eye. She also shoved a q tip swab in Chubbys ear which caused her to cry.There was an assistant there with Quilling who had explained procedures that could be done with Chubby and had a more in depth talk with Chubby's health history. She was more compassionate than all the staff I had seen there, I didn't get her name. Quilling recommended that we do a ct there and a neurology consultation that day which seemed unnecessary and wanted us to pay $407 for medication which she didn't sound too assuring would work. So a week later we tried to go Animal Emergency & Specialty Center on South Virginia (I highly recommend that place over this one) where they said her eye would need to come out and should be placed on medication immediately or they recommend euthanasia due to the state she was in, so I made the call that she shouldn't suffer any more than she already did. SO PLEASE DONT VISIT HERE FOR HER SAKE!!! THIS PLACE WILL TRY TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF YOU! read more

Had a wonderful experience with this pet hospital. My dog Plato had a stroke, and great compassion was shown to me. They allowed me the time needed to be with my pet. To also see how much he would or would not improve. They checked in with me frequently. Plato lasted 2 more months, after he tried really hard to get back to himself. Alas it was not to be he passed away at home with us. We took him in to Blue Pearl where the staff put us in a room to hold him for a while. They never rushed us and checked in with us until we were able to give his body up. Extremely Disappointed with Communication and Professionalism My pet had two major surgeries at this hospital within an eight-week period. While the surgical procedures themselves were handled well, every interaction after that has been extremely disappointing. Communication is disorganized and inconsistent. It took weeks to get test results, and each time I called for an update, I was told something different. I followed the staff's instructions at every step, yet no one ever called me proactively. I was made to feel like a nuisance for simply following up on my pet's care. Discharge information after the second surgery was incorrect, and when I tried to clarify it, because I had been told one thing an hour earlier by the veterinarian and something completely different at pickup, I was met with defensiveness and an attitude that was uncalled for rather than help. I understand this is an emergency facility, but the level of care and communication should extend beyond the moment payment is processed. Hearing staff gossip about internal drama while waiting for service only added to my frustration. I brought my dog here because it was the closest option, and his regular vet's voicemail suggested it for weekend hours. He had been vomiting, refusing food and water for over 24 hours, had a torn paw pad, and was starting to show signs of dehydration. When we arrived, there were only a few other people in the waiting room. More came in over the hour we waited before being told their X-ray machine was down and that we might want to go elsewhere in case he had an obstruction requiring imaging. While I appreciate that they didn't charge me just to send me somewhere else in the end, I'm frustrated that no one mentioned the X-ray issue upfront and that my dog wasn't even briefly examined--no vitals taken, no triage, just a quick glance. I understand that emergency clinics can be busy, but I expected at least a basic assessment before sitting there an hour and then being advised to go elsewhere. The long wait times are killer. I've came to bring my puppy in & had to wait 2-3 hours with nobody in the lobby. They had us waiting 30 mins for medicine & to be sent on our way, would've been waiting longer if I didn't ask the front counter for the bill. I took my wife to the ER at Renown & had her in a room in under 1 hour on a busy day. The cost will always "make sense" when it comes to anything medical, can't get mad at that but Blue Pearl, some how some way finds an excuse to try to pile on charges (worse than a mechanic). I just wish pets were treated with more urgency. New building but everything is dusty & dirty except for the front desk area (don't go to the lobby bathroom & look at their vents..) rude employees with a mask on as a front. I've been here a total of 3 times, every single time it's been a nightmare (maybe it's the night shift). My honest opinion, I can't tell you whether it's a good idea to come here or not. This isn't a restaurant, we're all here to take care of our fur babies. Do what you gotta do & just pray that your baby doesn't need the most expensive care & or the staff can get off their ass & help you in a time of need WITH URGENCY. read more

Not once did the receptionists tell me that it's going to take much longer than initially anticipated. Instead, after waiting in the entrance for 2.5 hours, I was given a room. But to my dismay, no one came in. I figured it was because of a more severe emergency that I overheard through the door, which is fine. I understand that. I am lucky to have visited Sierra Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Center (Blue Pearl) to see a specialist, not on an emergency basis. (Note: They're not open every day anymore so...I guess you can only have emergencies on certain days of the week, or head elsewhere). My cat's vet detected a heart murmur at his most recent wellness checkup and ruled out hyperthyroidism, so we were advised to make an appointment with Dr. Gunther-Harrington, the cardiology specialist here, to find out what the cause might be/how much of a problem it is. Making the appointment was easy - the only sad part was that we had to wait a month to see Dr. G-H. The office staff was excellent about scheduling us, getting the records from our regular vet and giving an estimate for the visit up front ($900-$1700, thank Cod for pet insurance). Instructions for the day of the visit were very clear and we got lots of reminder calls, texts, and emails leading up to the appointment time - they're very organized. On the morning of our appointment, everything ran just as smoothly. It's a really nice, open, clean colorful space with art everywhere (featuring animals, of course) and wasn't crazy and overwhelming like I imagine it could have been. We were promptly checked in and called back to Haboob's room, and a nice staff member even drew a picture on the little sign outside the door with Haboob's name on it. I should have written this immediately because now I've forgotten everyone's names! Except the doctor. Dr. Gunther-Harrington explained everything very thoroughly and did a preliminary exam. We discussed everything in the paperwork and were clear on everything. Haboob was getting an echocardiogram and some other tests, which she said would take about 45 minutes. I was welcome to wait in the room, or the lobby area, or my car, or run an errand and be back in 45 minutes. I chose the last option but Haboob was done with his tests in like 35 minutes so I was on my way back when he called. Dr. G-H went over all the test results and options with me. She was kind, thorough, and presented several options and considerations. She knew I was absorbing a lot of information and very nicely gave me her email address so I could ask follow up questions (which I did, and she answered those thoroughly and promptly). I like her conservative treatment approach, it seems very reasonable and I feel like I have all the information I need (or that is available, anyway) to make treatment decisions. We waited in the room to get checked out, also in an area in the back/not the main waiting area, which I loved because it meant Haboob wasn't getting stressed out by dogs or other cats while we waited to do the money part and followup scheduling. The total came in on the lower end of the estimate, which is always nice, and the staff member (the artist!), was friendly and reassuring about pet insurance covering it (she said Nationwide and Trupanion are usually the best about coverage - we have Nationwide). So basically - we couldn't have asked for a better visit, in every way. Highly recommend this practice and Dr. Gunther-Harrington, if you happen to need a heart specialist for your pet. read more

Called because my elderly kitty has a loose tooth suddenly in the front of his mouth and because my regular vet, VCA, recommended these fools First off, they told me we'd have to do a consultation then schedule the tooth pulling. And they couldn't do anything for me for another four days for the consultation and then surgery sometime next week. She also advised me it would be anywhere from $3500-$5500. I questioned this because I can go to a my dentist and have a tooth pulled for less than $500. I was told that my cat would need x-rays and teeth cleaning, all things I did not need or want. All we needed was a tooth extraction. I guess BluePearl seems to believe they can rip off their clientele with exorbitant medical procedure pricing, as well as, charge for unwanted procedures. I dont even know what to say about this place. You know that feeling when you walk into someplace but you just feel uncomfortable for some reason? Well, it's a brand new building and very nice. By the way, it just didn't feel right when we walked in. There was an older couple at the counter, becoming very boisterous about the overcharge of their dog or cat, you could tell that they were visibly upset about it. We were then taken back and we saw Catherine Harrington, it just felt weird. They ended up charging me $1600 for a EKG on my 3 pound puppy. I thought that charge is a little exorbitant. She then told us that they did not have any surgeons on staff at that building, that we would probably have to go to UC Davis and see one of their doctors there. I thought to myself, Surely there's a surgeon in Reno somewhere that can do this heart murmur surgery on my poor little dog? Come to find out they know those doctors at UC Davis in California, as they used to work in their office, I was not interested in driving all the way to California and have the added expense of a hotel, you name it after we got home I found it interesting that the office called and said that there was a surgeon there that could do the surgery but I would have to pay another consultation fee? What do you mean a consultation fee? I already paid $1600 and that included a consultation fee in that same building, so I thought that was really odd!! Both of us went home not feeling good about this place at all and also worried about my little puppy. So I did some research and called around to many animal hospitals and one that was recommended was a Dr. Ross at Carson Valley vet in Gardnerville Nevada. We set up a consultation with him, and even though it's about two hours from us, we took the drive, knowing that he has a good reputation. He did say he is not a board certified surgeon, but he's done about a couple hundred of these PDA surgeries on heart murmurs so he came highly recommended. We rescheduled the surgery for the following week, and they allowed us to spend the night in their parking lot in our camper van, and we dropped her off at 7 AM that next Thursday. They kept her overnight and we picked her up on Friday and she was doing fantastic. This place is absolutely amazing. Very nice building brand new, and we were really impressed with the professionalism of everyone on their staff. My dog came out of surgery with flying colors. Everything was explained to us by Dr. Ross, he is an amazing VET! It was nice to feel good about my poor little puppy having surgery, and Carson Valley vet took really good care of us. My puppy is running around very happy. One thing we did not like about blue Pearl, is the exorbitant fees, I think the price for an EKG was absolutely ridiculous, and they also quoted us $5500-$10,000 for this PDA surgery. That's utterly overly charged and no way, their reviews reflect that this place Blue Pearl over charges for their stuff. We paid less than $3500 to go to Carson Valley Vet Hospital. Fantastic Care, Professional Staff, we were comfortable as soon as we walked into CVV!! I do not recommend Blue Pearl, at all I just cannot believe the fees that they charged me and we're going to charge me. We can't recommend Blue Pearl enough. The staff are professional and kind, and the practice is very well run and organized. We specifically go there for Dr. Renner, whose specialty is animal dentistry; she was recommended to us by VCA Feline Medical Center. One of our cats has issues with his teeth, and Dr. Renner has been so helpful in guiding us through his care needs. The procedures are not cheap, but the quality of care is excellent for our pet! The Care, attention, and kindness of the staff was five stars. We have had to use this emergency room a few times unfortunately. One time with a dog that was stung by a wasp and had major swelling, another time with a dog who became so lethargic that we thought he was passing away (turned out to be a tummy bug and extreme dehydration), and most recently with our other dog who got into a plant that could be very toxic. I appreciate the staff giving us all the options and such. I feel our dog received excellent care and she is back on the mend. I am deducting one star though because the costs at pick up were not fully explained. When I spoke to someone on the phone they said if we got there before 11:00 a.m. to pick up our dog the charges would be $1522. But when we arrived, prior to 11, to get our dog it was $1622. I still am not sure what the $100 difference was. However I was going on only 4 hours of sleep and did not have the cognitive ability to discuss this with the ladies at the front desk. And while I understand emergency vet services are very expensive, this was far more expensive than a separate overnight that we had at a different emergency vet. By about $400 more. The level of care was almost exactly the same. Overall the care and compassion is fantastic. The people we have encountered have been wonderful. It is just the pricing that is a bit confusing. read more
