The highlight of the summer was having the opportunity to learn from and dance with Lauren Anderson! I ended up taking dance at UH for the fall semester, so unfortunately I have not been back to dance here. The owner and founder, Sherese Campbell, taught the ballet class we were in. She's inspiring and really makes you want to dance better. The students are awesome, some of them are City Dance Company dancers and they are just as inspiring. Our summer intensive class ranged from teenagers to adults in their 30's-40's. The summer intensive classes are cool because you do (for example) ballet one week and hip-hop another week (for the first 1.5 hours) and then like yoga or tap for the second 1.5 hours. Intensive classes are usually from 9 AM - 3 PM, but I only went from 9 AM - noon and it was $150/week vs. $250/week. Currently don't have time/money to take intensive classes again, but would love to go back soon. It's pretty convenient if you live near Rice/ West U. If you are unsure about anything or have reservations, Sherese is always willing to help and encourage you!

But from the very first day, Michael made us feel completely comfortable and capable. He met us right where we were, with so much patience and positivity. We came in with a few song ideas, and Michael walked us through how to find the tempo and understand what kind of dance would suit us best. When we changed songs a few weeks in, he rolled with it effortlessly and reworked the choreography without missing a beat. He never just told us what to do, he explained WHY certain moves worked, asked great questions, and guided us in a way that felt collaborative and supportive, not intimidating. Michael made us feel secure, celebrated and confident. Something that we didn't expect was how much our dance lessons would become the calm in the middle of all the chaos of daily life and wedding planning. Our sessions with Michael were relaxed, fun, and gave us space to just be together. No stress, no pressure. It became something we truly looked forward to every week, a little moment of peace where we could forget the to-do lists and reconnect. It definitely brought us closer as a couple. Michel truly thinks of everything--asking about the shoes I'd wear, the dress skirt, the outdoor gravel/dirt surface we'd be dancing on, and tailoring the choreography accordingly. He really is a master in every sense. Hannah was also absolutely amazing--super warm, welcoming, and helpful with everything behind the scenes. Between the two of them, we always felt like we were just hanging out with good friends who happened to be dance pros. The studio itself is gorgeous; spacious, gorgeously decorated, clean, and full of people having a genuinely great time. There was zero pressure or pretense, and there was always a lot of laughter and fun going on. It's been a year since our wedding, and we still talk about going back--maybe for some country dancing this time. Whether you're a total beginner (like we were!) or you're looking to choreograph something more advanced, this is THE place. We'll never stop recommending them. They have two rooms, which most times are used for both salsa and bachata. Different organizations use soundbox for their socials and fund raisers and the music usually depends on who the DJ is. As a former dance teacher myself, I couldn't dream of a better place for my child to dance. The Lab is spacious, clean, and bright. Both of the studios have viewing windows, so parents can observe their child's classes. There are even 2 locker rooms for changes between classes. When I first saw the schedule, I thought the classes were long in duration for the 6-8 year olds. I was wrong, the teachers are so amazing that they keep them engaged for 90 minute ballet lessons! The classes are longer than most that you will find in the area, because of the individual attention they give to each student. I can't say enough about the instructors. I have had a pleasure to observe all of them. They are all professional, and have great choreography. The best thing is that they all make great corrections to technique and posture in a positive manner. They do not lazily overlook things that can lead to injury. Also, the most important is their is no favoritism. Everyone gets the same amount of love and attention. From talking to other parents in the studio, my daughter isn't the only one practicing everywhere we go (even the grocery store). Most importantly, all of the girls beg to come to The Houston Dance Lab, every day of the week. As if 5 hours a week isn't enough. I am mixed chinese(mother) /polynesian (father) and take HEAVILY after my dad so regardless of me being able to understand the instructor and other students around me during Jazz Fusion , I was given the cold shoulder and given so many side eyes. Was not acknowledged until very end of class and was humiliating as is. Environment was not welcoming at all so unless you're Asian presenting I recommend every other class other than jazz fusion! Currently scared to try ballroom with this studio for this very reason, so for now I will be staying with ONLY kpop classes!
