Went there for lunch exactly at 12PM and the place got immediately filled. Ordered chicken satay as appetizer with Singha & two beef entrees. Beef Rendang & Beef with sauteed mixed vegetable. Satay went well with the provided peanut sauce & red Sriracha type hot sauce and beer. The Rendang was awesome and so the other dish couldn't compete relatively ! It was good too. But what got me was the borderline animal cruelty shown to the fish in their aquarium: it's too large, all alone and there are basically no plants or any objects inside that it can swim around. The Saigon Cafe is a pleasant and homey place, with cordial servers. Their food is a notch above, and their portions and prices on par with expectations. The Goi Cuin, shrimp filled cold rice paper rolls, were tasty and distinguished by their freshness. Once moistened, rice paper becomes rubbery very quickly. We particularly enjoyed the pho, as its slow cooked goodness and quality ingredients were apparent. We next sampled several entrees; each was good, but the Ca Kho To (a clay pot casserole of salmon, aromatic herbs and veggies) was exceptional. This dish is a personal favorite, and one which I know to be difficult to find the balance and rich depth of flavor created here. The food was blah. The chicken curry was edible- the chicken tasted like it had been boiled earlier and then just thrown in. The seafood soup was bland and boring too. The only thing that was halfway decent - thanks to a plummy sauce and the hot chilly sauce in a jar on the table - was the plate of summer rolls. Will try not to go there again, because the prices are on the high side and the food is definitely not worth it. I have dined here about 4-5 times. It is pricey for Vietnamese but some of the dishes are good and some are just ok. The real winner for me is the coconut curry-based hotpot - delicious, creamy, rich and whatever protein you go for is complemented with a nice blend of herbs and vegetables. The only downside is I have tried chicken meatballs in it, which were pretty bland, and then the shrimp, which was cooked to a boot consistency which I could barely chew. I would probably stick to a basic protein like beef or pork. The salads (Chicken & mint, pork & shrimp) are refreshing but they overdo the fish sauce and citrus for my taste. I have also had the Bun Cha, my favorite Vietnamese dish, but they dried out the rice noodles too much and I thought the taste/cook of the pork was just average. read more

Wrong menu description, oily soup, canned veggies, no apologies, overpriced, and tasted super gross!! I ordered one of the seasonal specials on the menu which states it is a spicy udon noodle w beef - it only came with thin pho rice noodle - huge difference and never explained why! Also, the "soup" base is full of oil and chilli sauce... They should have warned you about the level of spiciness as this was WAY too spicy!! We were kind of in a rush so I didn't want to raise my concern at first then never got a chance to do so.... The waitress didn't even stop once to ask us about the food cuz she attended 7-10 tables at the same time as she was the ONLY waitress on a Friday night... And when I finally got a chance to tell her about the noodle situation when she brought the check, she simply replied "ya alright"... no wonder why people stop coming to this place! I noticed before that they love using canned vegetables like baby corn and carrots in ALL their dishes but tonight was really the wake up call... We're never going again! Love Saigon Cafe! I seriously order from here at least once a week. Their pork and vermicelli noodles are spot on and I'm constantly craving them. Their pho is pretty good also, but it's not as good as some Pho's I've had in the city. I do prefer their Pho to Nha Trang's. Their Asian Vegetable soup is really good too, but they have their off days with it. Overall it's a really good place and I definitely recommend checking it out if you are in the neighborhood. My favorite restaurant in Jersey City and in my opinion one the best Vietnamese restaurants I ve been to in the NYC area. The food is fresh and delicious. The menu consists of authentic Vietnamese dishes along with other western influenced dishes. The chef also looks for fresh and local ingredients for the daily and season specials. It is family owned and operated so the service is consistent and you cant ask for a more friendly experience. Steve, the owners son, is a pleasure to talk to. Hes always in a great mood, walking around with a big smile, cracking jokes with the regulars and offering great suggestions about the food and wine menu. They often have new wines and they have a very good bar with interesting selections. Favorite dishes: Clay pot curry, Shrimp and potatoes cooked in a curry and coconut sauce and served in a clay pot. Finally tried this place after passing by every day - it's OK. The service is good, but the food is overpriced for what you're getting especially for Jersey City. We had the mango salad which comprised of large, kebab chunks of vegetables and mango. Oh, did I mention the canned pineapple? The lemongrass beef resembled Chinese dog food, thick with gravy and onions but very little lemongrass flavor. The only redeeming dish was the salad noodle squares that made me wish I had ordered two of the same dish. The pork, the combination of the salad, mint, noodle and fish sauce was delicious. The location of this restaurant sooo convenient for me. The prices are actually comparable to other restaurants in the area, but they are a bit pricey compared to your standard pho places in Chinatown. For my last visit, I ordered the pho while my friend had the seafood curry. Both were very good. The menu has a nice, eclectic mix of familiar Asian food staples that I normally see only in Chinatown, including some tasty desserts and appetizers.
