We recently gained access to a small deck boat, so decided to take a powerboat driving lesson with Captain Tim. I've done some driving before, but my wife wasn't very comfortable. In April of 2023 we booked an amazing sunset charter with Cap'n Tim on Lake Travis. Our family of 10 celebrated myself and my nephew's Birthday and had a fabulous time creating lasting memories. We signed up for a 3-hour sail on Captain Tim's yacht from 6:15pm-9:15pm to get a view of the sunset on Lake Travis. We had family visiting from out of the country and wanted to take them out on the lake. We did a shared sunset sail on Saturday night, and I couldn't be more thrilled with the experience. First of all, Cap'n Tim is a flawless communicator. When I first called to inquire about availability, he was already booked up for my first choice and unfortunately, I hadn't yet discussed alternative dates with my family. So I had to get in touch with my in-laws and call him back. Once I finally heard from everyone, it was after 10pm, but I decided to go ahead and call because most businesses allow you to leave a message and I didn't want to risk losing our spot. Much to my surprise, Cap'n Tim actually answered the phone and booked my reservation right then and there. That set the tone for what was to follow. He checked with us on the day of the sail, to make sure we were all set and didn't have any additional questions. Once we arrived, he insisted on carrying our stuff on to the boat. He and his lovely girlfriend Victoria, who sailed with us as crew, took care of us from start to finish. They allowed us to listen to whatever music we wanted, they allowed anyone who wanted to steer the boat, and even took complimentary professional photos of anyone who wanted them. All while engaging in intriguing conversation and safely navigating our group around Lake Travis. They warned us of all the potential hazards before we set sail, but we experienced none of them. Our experience was all smooth sailing. We felt safe and secure every second of the trip. The weather was PERFECT, so I'm sure that had a little something to do with it, but you could also tell that both Cap'n Tim and his lady are highly skilled sailors. Captain Tim, getting me to pull out my dusty yelpy keyboard in order to write a most deserving review! I really had no idea what to expect. I've been on a cruise ship, small fishing boats, canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, whatever have you, but a sailboat just tops the cake! I had images of the wind whipping us around, getting sea-sick, and spending a precious day of my vacation puking over the back of the boat wishing I was dead. But that didn't happen. In fact, I had one of the best times ever! After stopping by the nearest Randall's for some snacks and supplies, we drove down to Lake Travis and met up with Captain Tim. He has a beautiful sailboat! The largest boat on the lake, it is bigger than it looks! It may seem different to live on a boat, but this one has more living space than your average San Francisco studio! Downstairs, it has 2 bedrooms with 2 full sized beds, 2 full bathrooms (both equipped with shower access), a fully stocked kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, and sink, as well as a living space where you could play music, sit down and eat at a table area. On deck, you have the captain's area with plenty of couch seating, as well as 2 spots to lounge in the tail end. Lay out a towel and sunbathe to your liking! There's a couple more seats on the very tail end of the boat as well. I sat back there and stuck my feet into the icy cold water for a while. Cap't Tim of course started off the adventure by going over some brief house and safety rules, how to use the bathroom, and what to expect. We started the engine up and we were on our way! It was an extremely calm day, with very little wind. Unfortunately, being a sailboat-that didn't work too well for us. We relied on the engine a lot to get us moving around, but Cap't was great at what he does. He was like a wind-hunter. He'd spot some wind, go full blast towards it, throw up the sails, and catch the winds! After the initial I-think-I'm-going-to-be-sick feeling, I felt much better. For the next 5 hours, we cruised around this enormous lake! Drinking beer, jamming to Bob Marley, sunbathing in the warm Texas sun, eating more hummus than I'd like to admit, and re-enacting Titanic scenes (I'M ON TOP OF THE WORLDDDDD!!!!!) Cap't seems to know everything and anything relating to boats and water. He is super easy to get along with and to talk to. The hours flew by fast, even letting us steer the boat at times! Finally, the food ran out, we were on our last beers, and our lingering buzzes kept our eyes alert long enough to catch the sunset over the cliffs. It was super beautiful and unforgettable. Finally, the heat left the lake and coldness swept in. We drifted back to land where we thanked Captain Tim for an amazing day and made the drive back to Austin. Here are some tips I'd love to give out to make the most of your sailing adventure with Captain Tim! 1) Wear light clothing! Shorts, tank tops, flip-flops. It was like a beach trip. Pack a swim suit to sunbathe in! 2) Wear lots of sunblock! You're out in the sun all day, and the only way to escape it is to go downstairs where you'll miss out on the amazing views! 3) Bring lots of snacks and water/beer! He has a full kitchen stocked with cups, plates, knives, etc. We brought loaves of break to make quick sandwiches, as well as veggie platters, hummus, chips, and snacks. Make sure you hydrate with plety of water. Of course, don't forget about the beer!!! 4) Bring a towel! Lay it out on deck and take a nap! 5) Bring music! Captain Tim has a music player that will play ipods/phones/etc. Bring slow-tempo music for those relaxing moments. Bring high-volume pumped up music for the party moments! Tim has some great music selection as well and he's down for anything! 6) (I learned this from my cousin who has gone a few times before). Bring along a couple Coke Zeros for the captain! (They're his favorite. I hope he doesn't see this!) His boat can comfortable fit up to 10-12 people, so book a party! Birthdays, bachelorette parties, girls day out. Captain Tim took us out on Lake Travis and it was an awesome experience. He even let me take the helm for a while! I thought it was about 15 minutes, but turns out it was about an hour and a half. When we started there was beautiful sunshine and a nice gentle breeze. We went around the lake and stopped for some swimming. Then a big storm front started coming down the lake. Captain Tim handled it with confidence. We headed over to sail close to shore to block the worst of it and after a bit we watched it go right around us and all we got was a little sprinkle. Let me just set this up for you... we drove from Houston in May and arrived late (at 6:19pm) amid a heat wave (a scorching 96 degrees when we sailed). For whatever reason I expected to end the trip feeling wind blown and sun burned and it was quite the opposite. First of all I expected a tongue lashing for being 20 mins late and Capt Tim was so nice. He made a point to tell us to relax and take a deep breath, take our shoes off and to get in the boat. That was nice. I really loved that we could bring our own cooler of snacks and beverages on board (no red wine that could stain the boat). The actual ride on the boat was so relaxing. He has a Bluetooth sound system so you can connect your music but we chose to ride in silence, just listening to the wind and waves, for most of the trip. It was so relaxing! One of the top ten experiences of my life!!! Captain Tim took us out for a fun and relaxing day for my bachelorette! The sailboat was gorgeous and huge!! Plenty of room for hanging out all day!! The other boats on the lake looked like drinking tugboats competitively speaking. Which I'm totally down with. But man, oh man, Quintessence, you stole my heart. And so did Cap'n Tim. He asked what kind of vibe we wanted and we opted for calm then fun. So he took us to a more secluded cove so we could swim and hang out. He pulled out the "chill line"-a line of floaties-and we all hung out! Then he took us to a party cove and I think we were the envy of everyone there! Towards the end of the trip, we finally got some wind and Cap'n Tim put up the sail. He's a master seaman and it was amazing watching one person command such a large vessel (the largest sea-faring vessel on lake Travis)! He let us play whatever music and we caught him singing and dancing to Backstreet Boys a few times! he even brought over the loud speaker to the back of the boat so we could have it for swimming! And he took photos the whole time! Within a few hours of leaving the lake, we all had a link to a google drive with all of his shots-and they're fantastic-really capture the day!! So grateful this was a part of my trip. It was the perfect mix of relaxing and fun.
