What an amazing experience! Words fall short in describing how awesome captain Doug is. From the moment we met him, we knew we were in the right hands. He's so friendly and informative. I loved all the history he provided about his boat, sailing and the island. He's very detailed and prioritizes your safety. He's also very funny! He made our wedding anniversary truly special. Thank you captain Doug!

We had a FANTASTIC time. The history and charm of that boat are tangible from the moment you step on board. If you're willing, you may even get a chance to participate in the sailing. I volunteered to take the helm as we left the marina and that's when I really felt connected to the ship. Never did I think I would have a captain giving me a command like "hard to port!" but I got that experience before we ever got out into the bay. My wife and I were celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary and nothing would have been better than a Sunset sail aboard Taihoa! Thank you Captain Doug!

I had an epic Sail with Doug this time! I've been more than once. He does school training, regular day sails, and passage making trips during the summer. It's always super fun with him. He's a professional and his wooden boat Taihoa is truly a wonderful gem in a sea of plastic boats these days. Such a great time! Thanks Captain Doug!

Went out with Doug, 4 hour cruse, my son is learning to sail a very similar boat. Doug had my son driving the boat & talked all about the sailing process - boat, the bay , water tides. Wind - everything. Doug is a wealth of information on the SF Bay as well - you got to go out - so much fun - and it's a real wood sail boat

This was such a treat. We were expecting something different and instead we got a true experience. The captain was incredibly personable, knowledgeable and eager to share his wisdom with our group. You start with a history of the handmade sail boat which is fascinating.  Then a safety plan and on-board rules. Based on the weather the captain will plan a course and begins the sail. We brought a bunch of assorted nibbles yet were having so much fun we didn't get a change to eat them. Captain Doug will provide you with a wonderful history of the bay and a thrilling time!

This was a wonderful experience. I've been told by friends who sail that it's the best way to truly tale in the San Francisco Bay. They were right. I'm the kind of person who finally unwinds by the last day of a trip. This experience put that into fast forward. When the Captain cut the motor and began to sail.... Amazing, We chartered 3 hours. Next time we will do 4 at least. Sailing with Captain Doug will be a permanent addition to our trips to the Bay area.

Despite the storm and rainy weather we had a blast sailing Taihoa with Captain Doug! Definitely a memorable experience jumping on the waves and leaning almost at 45degrees during turns Captain Doug made the experience so personable with great stories, allowing us to assist him sailing the boat and going extra mile to ensure our Birthday Girl (sailing was a surprise birthday gift) felt special on her day! We weren't able to sail full 4 hours due to weather conditions, and Captain was so nice to offer us another sailing mini trip in the future for free! Yay! Very excited to go back and sail further in the bay!

Absolutely LOVED sailing with Captain Doug

Woo! This experience was worth every penny! Captain Doug is professional, friendly, and knowledgable. The crew made sure we were more than safe, and before we knew it we were out in the bay enjoying the unbelievable sights! Within minutes of departing we spotted a sea lion frolicking in the water, brown pelicans flying in formation feet away from the boat, a breathtaking view of the Golden Gate bridge, and Alcatraz. One of the best experiences of our trip, hands down!

We sailed 3 hours with Doug. Weather was perfect, a little chilly at the end, always bring warm clothes, windbreakers, when sailing in the Bay. Doug is an awesome captain- very informative, he takes safety seriously, would definitely sail again and recommend to others! Thank you Doug!

During the sail, Memo provided extra information about the surrounding cities, local history, his boat, and about the Bay waters themselves. The sail was not strenuous at all and is a great fit for a broad age range and aptitudes. Memo also provided snacks and drinks and the boat has a bathroom. We sailed near Alcatraz and Belvedere and had great views of the Golden Gate Bridge. He can tailor the route to your interests. We would 100% recommend a sailing experience with Memo!

Captain and crew were all friendly and welcoming and the naturalist was informative and excited to share her vast knowledge and experience. The crew intentionally included young people on board with raising the sails and such. Fun for them, and honestly fun for us to watch them learn through hands on experience. They serve up lots of beverage options during the trip, both with and sans alcohol. We went in early September and the weather was absolutely perfect. A bit chilly at first, which is to be expected, although we were able to shed a layer about halfway through. In addition to the overall gorgeousness of the Bay, we also saw lots of wildlife, mostly birds and harbour porpoises. The docking location is perfect, with nearby public parking, and lots of restaurant options if you plan to grab a bite to eat before or after your excursion. This is definitely a fun experience for both locals and visitors and something we will happily book again.

Given my past experience (and hubris!), I signed up for the 101/103 combo course that whittles 8 days of instruction into 5 days for "experienced" sailors. Little did I know that light-wind sailing in tropical climates is NOT the same thing as sailing in the San Francisco Bay! With 20+ knots of wind, high speed ferries, massive commercial tankers and barges, recreational sailboats, racers, motor boats, fishing boats, kayak/paddle boarders and strong currents, sailing the bay is no walk in the park. Thankfully, our fearless instructor Stephen Spoja guided us through coursework both on and off the boat covering a wide range of topics -- safety, preparation, navigation, nautical rules/regulations, (lots of) terminology, docking, and local knowledge. I haven't learned so much so quickly since my first job out of college. Anyone considering learning to sail in San Francisco Bay should without a doubt sign up for classes at Modern Sailing. Plus, after completing the 103 class you gain access to chartering ("renting" in sailing jargon) one of their sailboats for your own use on the bay anytime you'd like!

Started with bagged lunches (deli sandwiches), about 25 people total in our large group (international colleagues from North/South America and Europe, minus Australia). Out of the five boats, the female captain was the race director for the day and we had to navigate the differently-colored buoys floating in the water. Not all of the boats were identical (make/model, size, age?) so there was an adjustment/differential to the final times, but all were generally recent model monohull sailboats 30-45 feet long. Grey Goose, Ry Whitt, Survivor, Liberty, and one other boat I can't recall the name of (might've been Attitude Adjustment) were our racing sailboats for the afternoon regatta, teams of 4-5. I was assigned to Liberty, a beautiful 38-foot Beneteau. Our US Coast Guard certified captain/skipper from Modern Sailing School was Bill and also served as our tactician; one of our guys took the driver role/steering to telltales, and another was in charge of the mainsail. Another took one side for the jib sail and I took the other side depending on if we needed to tack or jib (gybe), our fifth person assisted where needed with ropes/wench handles, etc. The weather was fine -- the fog lifted and the sun came out making for great views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco city skyline, the Bay Bridge, and Alcatraz. I'd done whitewater rafting and 2-person kayaking before, snorkeling and parasailing but this was my first time sailing! We had a little bit of time to practice and literally "learn the ropes" and fundamentals before the motor was turned off and the official race started at 1:00 PM. The two basic turning maneuvers/techniques with the skipper strategically navigating us through using the wind speed/direction (especially through Hurricane Gulch) and sea state/tides (smooth vs choppy water) was challenging but fun. Not only were we racing each other and trying to round our marks along the course, but there were of course other fishing boats, ferries, Hornblower cruise ships, windsurfers, and paddleboarders in the water too -- even saw a few seals! The race time on the water was around 2 hours for our team (keep in mind the boats were only traveling maybe 8 miles per hour) but lunch was included on land as well as an awards reception (beer/champagne, medals) for all of the teams afterward. We weren't first, but we weren't last either! If you're feeling "nauti" and the line where the sky meets the sea calls you, let your inner Moana/Maui try out wayfinding with the winds in your sails on the SF Bay at Modern Sailing School!
