I am fairly new to the world of Saint Germain Bakery. I live midway between its CF Markville Mall and Scarborough (Pharmacy and McNicoll) locations. Whenever I visit CF Markville Mall, I am barely in front of the store and I can smell the butter. It's like going to another end of this mall and inhaling cinnamon from Cinnabon. Same effect. You just want whatever baked good that is about to come out of the oven. It took a Yelp experience for me to visit this bakery in Newmarket at Upper Canada Mall. I recently returned to get my fix and to visit the city. It had been a while. The bakery is next to mall entrance 3, which is to the left of Market & Co., the food hall, when you're staring at everything from Yonge Street. I rarely have any problems finding parking in this vicinity, thanks to the mall having expanded its lot design. The catch is that you can't directly go into the store using the store's door from Yonge Street. Rather, you need to be in the mall and then walk through the store's door. It's a bit weird, but okay. In the past, I have had its lobster roll. It's a bit different than your typical lobster roll that has Old Bay seasoning and celery. This roll was baked in-house as opposed to a traditional split bun. The lobster chunks didn't have a binder like mayo, but it had cucumber slices for crunch instead of celery. It's a different spin. If you're a lobster roll purist, you'd likely hate it. If you have an open mind, you'd love a modern take on a classic. I love getting buns with various fillings and toppings from bakeries. I have enjoyed the following baked goods: - Butter croissant - Cheesy hot dog bun - Curry bun with almond slivers - BBQ pork bun - Triple cheese toast - Sausage bun There wasn't a baked item that I have consumed from this bakery that I didn't love. The butter croissant was perfection. Light. Flaky. Buttery. I don't want to know any macros on it. Just give me one to make my day. I am not a cheesy person (okay, maybe the occasional joke), but the cheesy hot dog bun and triple cheese toast were delicious. It had the right amount of cheese to balance out the hot dog and bun, as well as the three slices of toast, respectively. Maybe it's the cheddar that this place uses. I crave them. The curry bun with almond slivers and BBQ pork bun were packed with filling. The curry bun had beef filling. It was so tasty. Same thing with the BBQ pork filling. It was seasoned well. No filler. Lots of pork. So good! The sausage bun was excellent. The sausage was cut in slices and added on top of the bun. It had butter. Expect a lot of butter here. Embrace it. Butter will be your best friend by the time you are done eating anything from this eatery. You can get frozen buns and desserts, take them home, and bake them. I want to get some next time. They are perfect when it's cold outside and you have a hankering for them, but want to hibernate at home. It's how I feel today. I wish I had some in my freezer. This place does have beverages. I have only had the pina colada, with pineapple chunks and coconut slivers. The sugar level was fixed. It was sweeter than how I usually take any drink, but it was delightfully refreshing. I could use one to pretend that I live in a tropical climate year-round. I have paid with both credit and debit cards. Staff were helpful when I had questions. They were always professional and pleasant. If you do forget to bring a bag, you can get a paper bag for thirty cents. I had to splurge once. It's better than not shelling out and trying to balance all your baked goods in your hands. I dig this bakery. It's a great addition to the mall. I'll be back for more. (31) read more

I recently tried the chestnut cake from Saint Germain. Now, I'm not usually a fan of chestnuts and very much prefer something sweeter but I was really impressed. The cake itself was very moist and flavourful, with a subtle sweetness that wasn't overpowering. The cake's presentation was also quite nice x neatly decorated and frosted. I ordered the large size and my family (4 of us) spent 3 days eating it, so you don't have to worry about it being too small! The store itself is located nearby one of the mall entrances to Upper Canada Mall so it was really easy to find. Inside, it was surprisingly spacious, with tables for you to sit should you choose to dine in. Service was quick and it was only a couple of minutes of waiting before being served. Overall, a delicious and satisfying treat, and I'd recommend this to anyone looking for something that's not too sweet! read more

This is one of our fav pastry places. They have many locations, however this one is located conveniently in upper Canada mall. We love the pastries here, my son usually gets the hot dog bun or pineapple bun. I always opt for the Molton cheese cake(so good) or egg tart. Our favourite is the mango cake, just the slice :) satisfies our sweet carving and it's so yummy with fresh mango slices in it. Definitely recommend! :) read more

Have been to this Chinese bakery located at upper Canada mall for a while. The first few experience was good when it first opened and the staff was nice, gave us a vip card too (10% off). Their buns are alright, maybe slightly above average Chinese bakery buns in a sense that they have like fancier buns such as some fruity cheese buns. We ordered their mango cake multiple times and most recently it was withdrawn from their website (as of early sept 2023). If I remember correctly there was also 20% off before. Not sure if it's removed because it's not summer anymore and it's a seasonal cake. Anyway, we managed to get one from the fridge at the store. About $43 for 6" one. When we got home and ate it the same night that we got it, some of the mango on the side already looked like over ripened and bruised and dark (see pix). Which is not what I expected. I understand that the mango may not be as sweet outside of summer time, but I don't expect it to look like it has gone bad. You can see it looks much better before (see pix). Compared to a similar cake I tried at other Chinese bakeries, the mango isn't as much, the cake is a bit more on the sweeter side but overall still a good cake that I like. (Except for the bruised mango) We also tried overpriced lobster roll it's whopping $16 each. I understand lobster roll are usually small and $16 is very expensive. Taste wise it's not bad but there are pieces of shell in the mixture. Good that they line a paper between the lobster mixture and the bun to avoid sogginess. Bun could be toasted more. Lobster feels fresh. Due to the high price probably just a try it once thing. The most recent visit the staff hasn't been very nice. Like you can feel their attitude. I think the overall let down is the inconsistency with their quality and with the customer service. read more

I'm a regular SGB goer and find their buns reasonable price and good quality. Even T&T is more expensive these days and doesn't taste as fresh. I got to try the lobster roll at the new location here and found it to be pretty fresh and a nice bun. If that's what you're craving, it's worth trying! I also noticed they started selling some frozen bakery items. Not a bad idea since if you're just buying for 1-2 ppl, it means you can save it for later.
