After seeing Port Union Bakery on TikTok I had to go there! It's a classic old style bakery, small but warm vibe. I was lucky to get there at a time it wasn't busy around 10:30am and was excited to get their sourdough bread and apple cake! The sourdough bread was still warm! I got it sliced and immediately had a slice with butter once I got home. So pillowy soft and delicious! I asked if there was any yeast and they said very little but they have their own starter so it's a hybrid rather than authentic, yeast free sourdough bread. I also got a pork empanada and it was good. I got a fresh, classic glazed donut and with one bite and I was in heaven! It reminded me of glazed donuts I had growing up so it was blissfully nostalgic! I haven't tasted the apple cake but it looks so good. Lots more I want to try on my next visit. All the prices were great too. A big shout out and thanks to Cail who was working the counter. Well this is mostly a review of their glazed donuts. I had read reviews as I was looking for a glazed donut that wasn't stale. And it was one of the better ones I've had. (Favourite is in Hamilton) I find most donut shops in Toronto have fancy flavours and my son likes a simple donut. I do too though I don't mind a flavoured one as well. There was pies, breads, cookies but I didn't try any. The real question is would I go back for the donuts? For sure! It was $11 for a dozen. Damn good price. I personally found the chocolate donut was denser in texture. Just not as soft as the glazed. The variety is limited. They had dutchies, glazed with sprinklers and another glazed maybe butterscotch? I love this place for their empanadas and doughnuts. The crust of the empanadas are slightly sweet. Come early when they are freshly baked! The spinach ones are delicious. The doughnuts are the basic flavours. Nothing fancy, but the texture of the doughnut is way better than what you would get at Tim Hortons. The price is about $1 each or less depending on how many you purchase. They did a giant Valentine's Day cookie for my kids that was delicious! The staff is always so nice. They give my kids doughnut holes whenever they come in. A huge bonus is that they are a NUT FREE FACILITY! This is one of the only places that I can rest assured that my nieces and nephews can safely eat their food! read more

This is such a cute, homestyle-looking bakery - just like a bakery from your old country (whichever one you may have been from). Some people have criticized the lack of flashy decor, but I am fine with that, if the product is good. It shows that they focus on their baking. Easy to find, and plenty of parking, tucked away in a local mall, but straight run on port union and 2 minutes from the highway. There is no seating, so it is strictly take out. As I walked in, I noticed a few things. $7 pies (Ok, this is a really great price; I remember that they had cherry, but I don't recall the other flavours); $1 each butter tarts, if you buy half a dozen; "day old" shelves with several intriguing bags of day-old bakery goods. Staff was very friendly and welcoming. They have beef, chicken, spinach, tuna and pineapple empanadas. I wanted to sample each of the empanadas, but they only had chicken and pineapple left. So I got 4 chicken and 2 pineapple. Get there early, if you want to get the full range! We also got some chocolate chip cookies, some of the cheese and ube pandesal; and a few day-old shakoy (twisted, sugared donut) and took all the foods home to taste. People have remarked that they wished that the pastries had been warm. Well, you can fix that yourself! Heat them for a few minutes in a low (195-200 degree) oven. Or a few seconds blast in the microwave, but that can wreck the texture of crust if you do it for too long. Slightly warmed, the chicken empanada were delicious; very crispy and flaky pastry, with a hint of sweetness. The filling complemented, rather than overpowered the tasty crust. Pineapple epanadas were refreshing little handpies, with the same flaky crust and a sweet filling. My daughter would have preferred a sweeter filling, but I don't have a huge sweet tooth. The chocolate chip cookies had that real home-made taste, buttery, crispy yet also chewy, like a classic "toll house" chocolate chip cookie. They were delightful. The shakoy were awesome. I remember my grandmother made twisted donuts like this (although she was not Filipino, Eastern Europe also has a donut tradition). A nice, rich, fluffy dough, and braided in a two strand braid (more like a twist). Covered with a simple dip in sugar, rather than a glaze, these were not overly sweet, so that the flavour of the dough really shone! I heated them briefly as described above, and the slight crispiness of the exterior really enhanced the flavour. After all this, I was too stuffed to try the pandesal, but later my appetite revived, so I upwrapped one of the pandesal. Intriging purple in colour, these pandesal tasted a bit sweet, like a brioche. I heated mine in the microwave for about 10 seconds and that did the trick. Nice sweet dough, but i just wish that there had been a bit more cheese. My daughter enjoyed as is, especially the sweet, purplish filling inside. These are really interesting: I'd love to make them, and try to add a bit more of the salty, aged cheese vibe to a very sweet bun. However, this was really pleasant to eat. I plan to return soon, to check out the very well priced pies, butter tarts and the other flavours of empanada. I'd like to give the bread a try, but it seemed that it could be a bit dense (I'll probably try it anyway). My daughter was gazing wistfully at the chocolate and the maple doughnuts, so I should get a few of those as well. I did return, and we tried the doughnuts. They are really good, and I can see why this bakery is known for the doughnuts. I highly recommend the Boston Cream, and I don't usually like doughnuts. If you are passing Port Union or in the area, it's a quick stop, near the highway and Kingston Road, and gives you a taste of the unique and delicious Filipino baking tradition, as well as contemporary, Canadian favourites. Also, if you haven't had Ube Pandesal before, the color will amuse and impress you!! So you really should try to check it out! read more

Still 5-star worthy in 2014. I'm not here year-round, so I only get to check in a few times a year, but everything is as I remember in my last (more extensive) review. As Vijaya notes in her review, the donuts are yeast variety, which I don't usually like because of their consistency (I usually prefer the denser cake-donut variety). But here they do something to give the very light donut a bit of a crunch. I put it down to "magic". Vijaya also notes that the Boston creme filling is spread, not injected - I see this as preferable to a big glob in one quarter of the donut, because you get creme in every bite. To each their own, I guess. On my visits this summer, I was overjoyed to see BUTTER TARTS. I'd asked in prior years if they ever made them, and was told "only around Christmas", but by popular request they had them, and on special for $4.50 for 6! These are not huge tarts, but they are excellent, and for comparable quality they would be twice the price at "The Flaky Tart" and other winning tart makers. I'm not a fan of raisins in my butter tarts, and P.U.B. makes them with and without, also a plus for me. read more

Came here to try their boston cream - I really enjoyed it. It was fluffy, soft and the chocolate coating tasted good. It is a bit on the sweeter side but will definitely go back for more to satisfy my sweet cravings. Port Union Bakery was one of those places, based on reviews, that I really wanted to like. For one, it's a neighborhood joint, family run. Also, the thought of local fresh baked goods was alluring, as I am a fiend for carbs. And, it's only a 10 minute drive from where I live, so total score right? Well, here are my thoughts. I headed out this morning around 11 am to grab a doughnut or two. Prime time for baked goods, I would hope. They had quite the variety: Chocolate Dip, Vanilla Dip, Sugar, Cinnamon/Sugar Twist, etc. All were yeast based I thought, or at least not cake doughnut-like. I chose the Boston Cream, and Dutchie. They both had crumbly textures and were on the drier side. Disappointing :( I had anticipated the fluffy, chewy texture associated with a yeast doughnut, and was totally let down. May be they use baking powder/soda here instead? I don't know. Moreover, the vanilla pudding/custard/cream in the Boston Cream was spread sparingly. No squishy, gooey goodness here. I hate to say it, as I am one to root for the underdog, but Tim Hortons has better. I may return to try their Empanadas down the road. read more

Port Union bakery is exactly what you would expect from your local bakery. A small local bakery, that is. They offer usual variety of breads (white, whole wheat and multi grain loaves, some buns and dinner rolls, banana bread...etc), small snacks like sausage rolls and Jamaican patties...etc) and pastries in a tiny 200 Sqft store with barely enough room to move around with a stroller. Since the store is owned by Filipino people (I think), they also offer Ensaymada which I have yet to try but will update this review once I do. What they offer is a good old basic staples so if you're craving a nice crusty baguette or a buttery flaky croissant, this place may not do it for you. But for your everyday need for the basic stuff, you can be certain that you'll be served with a smile. read more

It's a pretty good bakery, pretty cozy and it's definitely a pick up and go kind of bakery since there's no tables or chairs, which I don't mind. My friend and I visited on a ice stormy day, yet this place still got busy. I got their pineapple tarts, pandesal, whole wheat loaf and a donut. First off, their bread kind of tastes dry for me but it might just be that I keep my bread in the fridge, since I don't want it to go bad quickly. Their pandesal isn't really sweet and it tastes like any bread roll but I've been informed that pandesal is supposed to taste like that, which surprised me since I've been eating it my entire life and it's the first time I've tried unsweetened pandesal. That didn't really bother me though, although the pandesal was also dry, it almost crumbles when I try to break it to pieces, it doesn't tear if that makes sense. I got some sweets, the pineapple tarts and a donut. My go to flavour is always maple dip so I tried that. I wouldn't find any fault except that the icing on top, which flavours it, was so thick. It reminded me of the consistency of white chocolate, every time I bite into it it feels like a whole other layer. This made the donut super sweet. So if you are a sweet tooth, it's a pretty good donut for you, I personally don't like over sweet food. The pineapple tarts though, they were so good. I got six of them and I finished them within two days. I was supposed to ration it in case I get a sweet craving during the week but no they didn't last long. They were just too good. It kind of reminded me of a jollibee pie, I'm not sure why. I will definitely come back here and try their other baked goods and get another order of those pineapple tarts! read more

I've been eating food from here for over 10 years & I think it's worth checking out if you're in the area! It's a no frills kinda bakery. Nothing very fancy, take out only, kinda out dated. The people working here are very sweet & make some yummy food. Best time to come is early in the morning to get it while it's still hot. My personal favourite thing they make are donuts! Super yummy! They also make awesome muffins, cookies, pudding, croissants! I'm personally not the biggest fan of the buns because they're a little sweet for my liking but my Mom adores them. This is such a nice bakery on Port union road, and has the best no fuss coffee. ( To me). They re donuts are nothing like anything you get at a Timmys, starbucks, country style, anywhere but a small bakery that makes they re own donuts. They re a bit crispy, even the yeast donuts, but not stale, Ive never had a stale donut from this place. They re a good size, and they re cheap. . Now they re coffee, its just really good simple coffee!. I have no idea if its fair trade or any of that and really I dont care, its always fresh, and never burnt tasting. I cant go on about coffee because I dont know all the fancy lingo people used to describe it, but its GOOD!. read more

This was really close to a 5 star rating. My wife and I stopped in here because we needed some bread. Our first time here we were pleasantly greeted by a lady behind the counter. We picked up our loaf and proceeded to check out the pastries and donuts. I opted for a dutchie and my wife got a cheese Danish. The dutchie was *really* good it was just sweet enough and fresh. My wife loved her Danish, fresh and yummy. We also got 2 coffees to go. This was our only complaint I prefer a stronger coffee and this didn't cut it for me. If the coffee was a bit better this would easily be a 5*. Some of the baked treats we've had in a while. Great prices. read more

Their breads, muffins and donuts are very good and cheaper than other bakeries and donut places out there. I've been buying Empanada here eversince I tasted them from one of my friends. and since it's good I kept buying every now and then. I live in the nearby town so I have to call them ahead to make sure I have my order ready. One time I ordered 3 doz. and they said its available and they knew the pick up time, when I get there, I saw this lady pulling out the empanada from the cart and gave it to a walk-in customer.
