The church stands out beacon of faith for the Catholic community of Broward County. St. Gregory Catholic Church was established in 1959 under Father Michael Keller. In 1961 the parish was dedicated. In 1979 a fire destroyed the church but the congregation came together under the Reverend Martin Cassidy and rebuilt the church which opened in 1982. In 1988 the church opened a school. The present school was completed in 1995 and expanded in 2000. The school is open to students from PK to 8th grade and has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as an exemplary school. The church has a number of charities that it supports and you can volunteer in many ways to help the community. The church holds mass in both English and Spanish. Mass is held every morning, and seven times on Sunday. A complete list of mass times can be found on the church website. While visiting the church campus I enjoyed visiting the peaceful Prayer Garden that was completed in 2004. The Prayer Garden features a large fountain, statues, and benches for quiet reflection set amid trees and landscaping. In 2021 Northwest 76th Avenue on the east side of St. Gregory Church was renamed Cassidy Boulevard in recognition of The Reverend Martin Cassidy's accomplishments at St. Gregory Catholic Church. Cassidy who is from Ireland served as pastor from 1974 to 1991. He was a driving force in laying the strong foundation that supports the church to this day.

I moved to Florida Two and a half years ago and as St.Gregorys is five minutes from my home and my family children went to the school I began attending the 6:00pm mass however, during Easter I moved to the 10:30 mass as I was uncomfortable as a black person as the church base is more of a Spanish congregation. I usually sit between the fifth or sixth pew in the from the front of the alter towards the isle I have noticed from I have been going there no one ever sit beside me, if they come to my pew they enter from the opposite side leaving a wide gap between themselves and me, if you say good morning or good evening they pretend to speak no English when the time come for offering the sign of peace they look away from you waving their hands they never look you in the face they look everywhere except at you. Today just as the mass started two Spanish ladies said excuse me I came out into the isle so they could pass easily, they stood right next to me but as as the priest said be seated they again said excuse me, picked up their belongings and moved right across to the row opposite my seat which was more filled with their own people. The week before I stoped outside the portico where the priest was greeting people after mass I thought I would introduce myself as a new person to the church he greeted and spoke Spanish to those he met when my turn came he held my hand shook it said nothing and moved my hand to his right meaning I was to continue moving. I guess even when the word of God is being celebrated and the congregants have taken Holy Communion racism and selfishness is still the order of the day. How very sad I have attended mass at the Vatican met the previous Pope on a trip organized my previous Arch Bishop and have never had such a caustic experience at a Catholic Church.

I thought the homily was beautiful, given by a visiting priest. We were delighted that the Mass was in Spanish. I'm a person who attends Mass daily and consider God to be very good to me, as this is a great gift He has granted me since 2004. My family and I travel frequently, and I always look for Masses wherever we are. So, I asked someone who was helping on Sunday where the daily Mass was held during the week, and they told me 'in the chapel,' but they couldn't tell me exactly where the chapel was. I didn't think it would be difficult to find, as I've had similar experiences in other places where I've met other faithful people and easily found the location of the Holy Eucharist. I took precautions to arrive 10 minutes early, according to my GPS, to arrive on time. I arrived a bit before 8:00 AM, but sadly, the sign announcing the Mass schedules only said, 'Weekday Mass is in the Chapel,' without indicating where the chapel was. This church is located in a Catholic school, and there were some people working around, so I asked them where the chapel was. Time was running out, and no one could tell me, so I sadly got in my car to return to my hotel, as it was already 8:13 AM and Mass had already started. As I drove away, I saw a sign that said 'Buddhist Chapel,' which didn't even cross my mind to enter. Further ahead, I saw a sign for the Parish House, almost in the same building as the Buddhist Chapel. So, I thought, 'This must be it,' and I dared to enter. I received a lovely welcome from a person who kindly made space for me to sit. Mass was already at the Offertory, so I offered myself and asked for forgiveness from God. Since it wasn't a Mass of Obligation, I decided to receive Communion and stay after to meditate on the day's liturgy, which I had missed. I prepared myself, and the priest (who didn't know me) gave me his blessing but denied me Communion in a very scandalous way, making it known to everyone that I had arrived late. It was very, very hard for me, as I think God allowed me to experience this humiliation for a reason. Instantly, I felt a tremendous desolation, wanting to assume that the priest was manifesting God's will in me. I returned to my place, crying and deeply troubled, and began to ask Jesus to receive Him spiritually, which I've done sometimes for grave sins. At the end of Mass, I decided to try to explain to the priest what had happened to me and almost beg for his mercy to receive Communion. The priest was furious with me and couldn't listen to me, although he did say that, against his convictions, he would grant me the Eucharist. I replied that I wouldn't want to receive Jesus in that way, and he, still angry, told me that I now HAD to receive it. I offered it for...him, The day before, I found out that his name is Joseph, and that Monday he left saying it was ridiculous that I had asked him for Communion when I had almost arrived at the end of Mass. I write this long story to remind that priest that he cannot and should not deny Communion to anyone, unless he truly knows them. God will judge him. I had a terrible day, and if I weren't a person deeply rooted in my faith, this incident might have driven me away from my beloved Church! How sad!"

In the 1950's there was only one Catholic church in the entire south Broward area. St. Stephen's was created when 250 people from the Hollywood and Miramar areas came together to worship in a humble space created out of wood crates and cement blocks on September 6, 1953. A need for Catholic services was filled and by 1954 a church building was completed. The building was enlarged as more people attended the church and on August 12, 1956, Fr. Robert Schleffen was commissioned to become the first Pastor of St. Stephen the Protomartyr Church. In 1991 the church was refurbished to celebrate its 35th anniversary. The Creation stained glass windows were commissioned from renowned artist, Sister Diane Couture, SSJ. Today the church body is made up mainly of Hispanics and African Caribbean Islanders who worship under the motto "ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM" The church is a multi-ethnic and multi-language Catholic community. The church offers a daily weekday and weekend mass with a schedule provided on the church website. I love learning about the history of different churches in the community and St. Stephen has a long legacy of helping those who are hungry with the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry.
