The stained glass is history itself: the Founder's Window, the Road to Damascus window, the signing of the treaty with the Delaware Indians, and the Mayflower Compact can all be found in this lovely building. It is the people and its minister who make this a wonderful church. Thank you to our minister. She is wonderful, insightful, and brings to us a perspective that some cannot be open to understanding as Unitarian Universalists are typically open to hearing. This was our third time to visit the temple…read more I suspect that most people visit Nauvoo for the historical sites, including the reconstructed temple. Still, I would highly recommend a visit. In the 1840s, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (called Mormons, in derision) built a place "for the Most High to dwell." The temple was an invitation for God to reside among them and, therefore, required considerable effort, care, and sacrifice. After the untimely deaths of Joseph and Hyrum Smith (their religious leaders), many church members left Nauvoo and migrated to the Utah Territory, and the temple fell into disuse; a tornado destroyed the building in 1850. In the 1990s, church leaders decided to reconstruct the Nauvoo Temple, with some interior modifications to accommodate modern temple ceremonies. Given the private nature of these ceremonies, only church members can enter the building today. However, the grounds are open to the public. For those interested, the nearby visitors' center contains a detailed model of the interior.

The little white brick church was well lit and had a lot of personality to it. There is additional seating upstairs which overlook the chandaliers and alter. For a small church, I was impressed that they had a choir, who in fact sang some songs in Latin. Their music was very good too. Hallelujah!

They'll work hard and begin to build relationships with others. Ancient and traditional the service is meant to be a sensory experience of worship. The church building has gorgeous Tiffany Glass windows that just glow. It is a congregation of about 100. You won't get lost in the shuffle here. They have open communion, too. Do you love the sound of a really awesome pipe organ? You just have to come hear our organist Laura Kammerer play those old fashioned hymns from long ago. The current pastor, Pastor Goldie, is the sweetest, most caring pastor and the church is lucky to have her lead them. Sermons can be found on the church website for those that can't make it on Sunday. Pastor Brian Hess does a great job on organizing Sunday School for those ages 2 years old to 6th grade. He also does an amazing job leading those who teach the AWANA program. Pastor Thomas Donovan does a great job playing guitar during morning worship and teaching and leading the Youth Group. Columbus Road Church has multiple home groups for those who want to connect with other throughout the week. Men's Bible Study are Wednesday at 7pm and Women's Bible Study are at 6:30pm on Wednesday as well.
