This was our third time to visit the temple…read more I suspect that most people visit Nauvoo for the historical sites, including the reconstructed temple. Still, I would highly recommend a visit. In the 1840s, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (called Mormons, in derision) built a place "for the Most High to dwell." The temple was an invitation for God to reside among them and, therefore, required considerable effort, care, and sacrifice. After the untimely deaths of Joseph and Hyrum Smith (their religious leaders), many church members left Nauvoo and migrated to the Utah Territory, and the temple fell into disuse; a tornado destroyed the building in 1850. In the 1990s, church leaders decided to reconstruct the Nauvoo Temple, with some interior modifications to accommodate modern temple ceremonies. Given the private nature of these ceremonies, only church members can enter the building today. However, the grounds are open to the public. For those interested, the nearby visitors' center contains a detailed model of the interior.

After visiting the Dana-Thomas House, architecture fans should face east on Lawrence and look up…read more The yellow stone cross visible above the rooftops a few blocks away tops the central spire of Springfield's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The church is situated between the school and convent on one side and the rectory on the other, all executed in the same deep yellow stone. The imposing facade is Greek Revival, and when I walked up the steps in the middle of the day (on a Wednesday), the doors were open. The sanctuary is expansive and as opulently decorated as any of the great churches in Chicago. Marble is everywhere, from the wainscoting, to the niches, to that which frames the icon behind the altar. The stations of the cross are done in mosaic, but the most striking part of the church are the windows. Light floods into the tall, narrow windows showing the vivid colors of the images. Even though services weren't scheduled when I visited, there were several people seated around the church having quiet moments to themselves. More people came in while I was there, so it seems that the church is commonly open, but that visitors should enter quietly and move through the church unobtrusively and respectfully.

The stained glass is history itself: the Founder's Window, the Road to Damascus window, the signing of the treaty with the Delaware Indians, and the Mayflower Compact can all be found in this lovely building. It is the people and its minister who make this a wonderful church. Thank you to our minister. She is wonderful, insightful, and brings to us a perspective that some cannot be open to understanding as Unitarian Universalists are typically open to hearing.
