They gave us a tour of the school and talked about all the great activities that happen there. I thought, if my kid could have a fraction of that presence, then he would be well served. The results of Our Lady of Perpetual Help School were on display with radiance. The teachers here care about the students. They are experts who love their craft and endeavor to continuously improve upon it. They are passionate and compassionate mentors. The staff and teachers approach their job with a level of professionalism and organization that I didn't see at the other preschools I toured. It's very "buttoned-up", well-kept, and bright, and that all sets a tone that education is important. It's also a FUN place to learn. You couldn't ask for a better playground, and tables outside are set up with Brio blocks and various hands-on toys. The best part about Bethany is how the students are taught about God. The teachers there all care very much about communicating to students, in age-appropriate stories and concepts, about how much God loves them. My daughter's class, for instance, focuses on a different fruit of the spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, etc.) each month. I like that this genuine desire for kids to know Jesus, seems to infuse every aspect of the day, rather than it feeling cheesy or obligatory. We live nearby, but I noticed in the student directory, there are families as far away as Oxnard and Malibu who drive out to Thousand Oaks to send their children to Bethany, and I can see why. Starting over mid-year was something we dreaded, especially with our fourth grader, who was heartbroken and understandably a tough sell on any new school. But just a few days ago, as we drove to Oaks Christian, she turned to me and said, "Nothing has gone right this year... except for Oaks. I'm so excited to wake up and go to school every day." This wasn't because it was just "fun" or "new." She didn't want to like Oaks. She wanted to go home. And yet, nearly three months later, she is still just as excited every day to be there. I remember calling Oaks Christian, fully expecting them to say there was no space. I knew how in-demand the school is, and I thought we'd be gently turned away. But instead, they treated our situation with incredible grace and compassion. They didn't just squeeze us in--they took the time to really get to know us, even in the middle of their busiest admissions season. They created space for our daughter in every sense of the word. They managed to condense an in-depth admissions process--testing, touring, interviewing both her and us--into a single day. I know that was no small ask, and I'll never forget how lovingly and efficiently they made it happen. Katina, our admissions officer, is everything you could want in a human being--warm, grounded, centered in faith, and truly kind. Since enrolling, the school has only continued to exceed every expectation. The systems in place are exceptional, the administration is thoughtful and organized, and the teachers? Just unreal. We often find ourselves asking, "Is this school even real life?" I recently joined our daughter and her classmates on a two-day trip to Sacramento. It rained, hailed, and was absolutely freezing--everything that could go wrong, did. And yet, it was the perfect snapshot of Oaks. Brant Childers, head of the Lower School, along with the teachers and assistants, were right there with us, every step of the way. They are real humans--transparent, kind, joyful, and deeply devoted to their students. They are the kind of people you dream of raising your children alongside. The other parents blew me away too--funny, smart, down-to-earth. I immediately understood why our daughter loves her classmates so much. The warmth and kindness that radiate from this community is something special. Academically, the school is rigorous and moves quickly, but because the teaching is so strong, the students are thriving. You can feel the love in the classroom. You can feel the joy. We had considered moving to Orange County after the fire, but once our daughter got into Oaks, we knew: Westlake Village would be our new home. It was that simple. The school was enough to make that decision. We're so grateful for the years ahead here--for all three of our daughters. Oaks has been a very bright spot in an otherwise incredibly difficult year. We are very happy with our decision, and would wholeheartedly recommend Crossroads to other families who are looking for Childcare. It was our first time putting our son in non-family childcare and so understandably we were a bit nervous, however watching him grow and come home and talking about his friends is simply amazing. Crossroads is located at the church (Methodist), and they do teach age-appropriate bible learning. My family is non-denominational, however I think it is important to expose children to different things/teaching. My son will come home and explain to me the stories that he has heard (IE Jonah and the Whale) and also the teachings that he has heard (Sharing, Being Kind..all things that EVERYONE should know and SUPPORT!). Ms. Gordon (the program Director) explained that they would be sharing the teachings, but also that the program is open to everyone regardless of belief. I honestly find it very cute to hear a 4-year olds recollection of a Bible Tale. The staff is all awesome. Ms. Gordon, Ms. Theresa, Ms. Elizabeth. Mr. Ron (the cook) is literally all my son talks about. He gets snack and lunch provided by the school and it is often things like quesadillas, sliders, fruit, vegetables, milk, cereal, granola bars. It has definitely increased the types of food my son is willing to try. Communication from the school is awesome and they take safety as a top priority. I've had a few times where my son has fallen and scraped a knee and I have always gotten an accident/incident report and he always tells me that "teacher" takes care of it and put on a bandaid or a cool pack. Every once and a while the school will have events for parents (hindered by COVID obviously) but we have had Muffins in the Morning and got to go and join our student to make crafts, I really do love these events. The school takes a lot of COVID precautions (sanitizing, hand washing, and all adults wear masks) and I appreciate that the children do not have to wear masks (I personally feel its unrealistic to expect small children to wear masks all day in the California heat). There have only been 2 COVID incidents (one student as close contact to a family member, one confirmed case) since the pandemic began, and I think that speaks volumes for how much the staff cares and takes care of the school. Also, when there was a shutdown due to a case the school was very open and realistic in reaching out to parents and coming to an agreement (individually with each affected family) regarding tuition re-imbursement/payment for that month. Also the price is very, very, very, good for the quality of care and the learning and fun that my son gets to have there. Overall, I have nothing but good things to say about Crossroads and their staff. I really do recommend them for childcare.

Constant staff turnover - Currently the principal, treasurer, and athletic director tenured their resignations for the end of the school year and there are no replacements lined up to fill the vacancies. The teacher lined up to be the new science instructor decided not to take the job so a volunteer parent will continue teaching the class for the third year. This is par for the course since the soccer, baseball, and track teams are all coached by parents and not the athletic director. 2. The school only hires Adventist teachers so even if the most qualified candidate is a devout Christian they are barred from working at the school because they are not of the Adventist faith. 3. The state of the building is in disrepair. Ventura County Health Dept reports show constant rodent and feces infestations. (I have linked the health inspection reports below) Even worse is the staff housing located directly behind Home Depot. The homes are in such poor condition the health department was forced to perform a surprise inspection last summer due to an open sewer running out of one of the homes carrying urine and feces into the front yard. If you are considering the Academy I encourage you to tour the staff housing behind Home Depot. 4. The school is often used as a "dumping ground" for troubled students expelled from other public and private schools. In 2026, a student called in violent threats against staff and students necessitating police intervention. Below is the e-mail to parents from the principal about the threat. "Dear NPAA Families, I learned early this morning that several parents have heard via police scanner about a student who has threatened NPAA's physical plant. This threat therefore involves student and staff safety. Of course, this incident is alarming, and their concern is understandable. However, since rumors fly quickly -- and change in shape and detail and intensity as they travel -- I want to inform the NPAA community what is happening so as to prevent the rumors from worsening. First of all, and most important for the safety of students and staff, I asked the student's parents to keep their student at home until further notice. They have agreed to do so, starting today. In the mean time, I have stayed in touch with local law enforcement. Yesterday afternoon I sat with deputies from the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. I have a case number that I can use to update authorities on developments. NPAA administration have notified the school's governing body, the Southern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, of these developments, and we are in constant contact with officials there. Again, the student's family will keep the student home until further notice. The family will continue their work with a team of professionals who follow the student's progress daily. Excellent individual attention in a Christian environment. Kids are kind and accepting and lift each other up.
