This place has been on my list of things to do for sometime now. Every season I receive their…read morenewsletter promoting their up-coming productions. Seasons come and go, and I end up missing the shows over and over again. Until today. The journey to Jennerstown is roughly less than 30 miles from my home and weaves you through the very scenic Laurel Highlands. The pictures on the Playhouse brochure and newsletter does not do this place justice. The playhouse is tucked into a wooded area and is nicely maintained. More importantly, this 393 seat theater is housed in an 1805 restored gristmill. It is also Pennsylvania's oldest professional stock theater, and is one of 12 professional stock theaters remaining in the US today. The cast, live musicians, and musical numbers were absolutely entertaining and amusing. The set design was perfect for the production, and the sound system was crisp and flawless. The Mountain Playhouse is situated next to the award-winning Green Gables Restaurant and makes for a lovely dinner-theater outing.

With three movie screens and lots, you always have options to pick from when coming to a movie. We were prepared for large crowds as we went for Toy Story 5's opening weekend. You can arrive earlier than the listed box office time. We showed up at 6:30 and drove right in! Come early, grab a spot, and enjoy the summer! We came hungry so we stopped by the Concession Stand. They do request that you don't bring your own food... and you won't be disappointed with the options. We, of course, grabbed the commemorative large popcorn bucket.. it was the perfect amount for 4 adults! I also snagged a Pepperoni Roll, large coke, and a box of Bunch-a-Crunch! The prices are reasonable and help to keep this community icon up and running for years to come. As you enter, they give you a list of rules and a small bag for any trash. Both of these keep the place clean and avoid any issues throughout the night. I cannot wait to come back for more movies all summer long!!

The actors are are all unpaid amateurs, which means you get some degree of variety of talent, but everyone seems to have fun and there are some professional-grade thespians on display. To address concerns of Shakespeare buffs, the troupe does not alter the vocabulary or try to set the shows in any era except for the original setting. Inevitably, they do cut lines and scenes for time, but overall, they do an excellent job of preserving the main thrust of the show. Admission is free. Poor Yorick's is supported by donations, grants, and a lot of volunteers. The park setting means that the audience can bring their own seating and a picnic lunch. Concessions are available, a pretty standard array at standard pricing.

However, I must say, it was an excellent experience. Debbie, the organizer of the group events, was outstanding. Everything went so smooth. She worked with me on everything I needed for my group. It's built into an awesome old converted church complex, which gives it an immediate, distinct vibe the second you walk up. Before the bands even start, you can hit up their massive record shop on the main floor. I've caught myself crate-digging there more than once and always walk away with a solid haul of vinyl or CDs before heading downstairs. For a basement space, the sound quality is shockingly good--crisp, heavy, and doesn't just turn into a wall of muddy noise like most underground rooms. It's got that perfect, intimate DIY energy without sacrificing the audio. If you go to a lot of shows, this place needs to be on your radar.

I attended the Four Chord pre-show earlier this summer, featuring Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, 408, and some other performers. They didn't start the show on time and had us waiting outside. It was hot inside the venue too, which I didn't love. But the worst part about the experience was the sound. It was SO echoey. Maybe they were having an off night, but I was really regretting not having earplugs with me. The sets were good regardless, and it was nice that they had pew seating along the sides, but I wasn't otherwise super impressed with the venue itself.
