I wish I could give them 0 stars! I visited Sakura Sakura today with my son for the Godzilla Festival, hoping to find some unique merchandise. Unfortunately, from the moment we walked in, the man and woman working there were incredibly unpleasant. My son was holding an empty cup, and right away, we were told to leave because we had drinks. I asked if I could leave mine on the counter, but the man made me put it in a bucket instead. What really bothered me was how he proceeded to follow my son around the store, acting as if he was doing something wrong, even though he wasn't touching anything--just looking. When I asked about a t-shirt and jacket, he rudely told me they didn't have my size, but I was actually looking for a small for my son. It felt like he didn't even want to sell to us. He then told me the t-shirt was $70, which seemed way overpriced. I also inquired about a jacket in the window, and not only did he refuse to take it out, but he also mentioned it was $450--a price that didn't match the quality at all. Their customer service was absolutely horrendous, and I'll never be returning. I want others to be aware that the owners of this store are disrespectful and treat their customers poorly. Save your time and money--there are plenty of other places with better products and friendlier people. Please see all the other 1 star reviews. Nice clothing, egregious customer service. I asked to try on two tops, after which the woman behind the register sized me up and put one of the items back on the rack. When I asked if she didn't want me to try on the top, she said she could tell it wouldn't fit me, and said she sees big people who try on clothing that's for smaller people all the time. I insisted on trying it on to be sure, at which point she asked me "What will I do with it if you rip it?" In retrospect, I can't believe I tried both articles of clothing on (both of which fit). I can't believe she thinks speaking to customers as you would your overweight relative is acceptable. Nice Japanese shop with many accessories for wearing kimono that can't easily be found outside of Japan. This means there are some very difficult clientele as you can see if you read through the fascinating YELP reviews. When I was in here there was two of each, a pair of annoyingly ignorant tourists, a couple of annoyingly passionate Niponophiles, and two annoyingly cute kimo-kawaii girls. And it's a small space so yes, I was more than a little frightened but my mother was Japanese from an era when women dressed in kimono regularly and it was nice to come into a store that sells authentic Japanese. They also have pretty earrings and other nice gifts from Japan, so a good place for omiyage (well not if you're going back to Japan or Hawaii). You can dismiss the complaints about price, anyone who has been to Japan knows these prices are actually pretty good, nothing from Japan is going to be inexpensive. I found the owner to be very nice, considering her difficult clientele. She has exquisite taste in music which she plays on CDs (primitive MP3s) in what I presume to be an effort to maintain a Buddhist calm in the face of some really outrageous customers. read more

If I can give this place no stars then I would. I used to come here all the time but yesterday was the last straw, I was with my best friend because it was her birthday and we went in here and we're looking at the yukata's one of my friends was looking at the kimonos and the guy with the glasses rushes up and pushes her a bit out of the way and he looks at the Komono then starts fixing little things by us and staring at us. I know the guy I would come all the time with my Japanese teacher but I'm not going to be harassed by some jerk of a owner. Good source for all those accessories needed when wearing kimono. It is not easy to find some of these things outside of Japan if you lose or rip something, I always seem to come back from special events missing an obi ita or obi soft sash. Where else can you go in Japan town to find inauthentic, overpriced, westernized yukatas? Well, you can actually probably go to most places in japantown and find that, but this place has those things in a wide variety of colors. I'm not going to lie, the ones here are a lot more vibrant looking than the yukatas and obis I have a home, but mine are actually from relatives and I didn't have to pay the prices this store charges. They're cute and boutique-y with a nice selection, but no real substance with any of their products. It caters to tourists (as all Japantown does) but they could do a better job of hiding it, I think. If you want a unique present for yourself or your BBF, Sakura Sakura is the place where you might find that cute present. It is a small boutique inside J-Town mall. I usually just admire their cute items from outside the window on my way to my fave stores and restaurants at the mall. Today, on my way to claim my birthday lunch treat from my friend Vilma, we were distracted and came out of the store with identical two-toned scarves for $19.99 each. To prove my point that Sakura Sakura sells cute stuff, I got lots of validation today from my girlfriends about how cute my scarf was. Sakura Sakura also sells stylish and classy Tokyo style fashion, something that Audrey Hepburn would have worn; as well as hip, more youngish coats as well. And do not forget to check out the CUTE LITTLE KIMONOS for LITTLE GIRLS. How cute is that?!!!! I came in today looking for nagajuban and came out pleased as punch. Not only did I find a juban that fit me, but she (the owner?) showed me the ones she sold were made of two parts and easier to wear. Compared to the prices I pay for kitsuke items in Sacramento, hers are a bargain. The juban was only $45. Obi makura, obi ita, and eri shin all great prices. The obi age are gorgeous silk. She spent a lot of time with me, giving me advice on the different kinds of kimono accessories. We talked about tea ceremony and how she hopes to carry more kimono and obi, but wonders if there is even a market for them. I will definitely be back. read more

They have some products that are tough to find outside of Japan, but they're severely overpriced. I bought a hada-juban and and an obi-ita and it cost me like $60-$70. Waaay over priced. The lady who worked there was also pretty condescending. I was clearly looking through a series of undergarments & products necessary to wearing a kimono/yukata and just because I don't look Asian (I'm half) she automatically assumed I didn't know what I was looking at. She wasn't nice about it either, and her tone/comments were pretty rude. I can understand that there probably are a lot of people who come in and don't know what to buy, but atleast she could have some tact when handling customers. If I could give no star, I would. I live in Berkeley and shop often in Japantown, one of my favorite places to go. I always have a great meal, buy lots of items I need, and experience friendly service, except at this store. I walked in today, made eye contact with the saleswoman and attempted to say 'hi', but she turned away, being extremely rude. OK, so there seems to be a significant difference based on who you catch working in this store. It seems that the gentleman who runs the store is very pleasant, knowledgeable, and helping. While the lady who also often works alone, is nasty, unaccommodating, and straight out rude. I have bought wall hangings here in past years. Today my mother and I, along with my 3-year-old walked into the store. My child did NOT touch anything nor was she interested in touching fabrics and clothing. There was nothing fragile or glass in the store. The male storekeeper stared at my child with the meanest look and would not take his eyes off of her. Clearly he does NOT have any children. How rude!!! She didn't even do anything!
