We have been here a couple of times and it is now our go to for sushi rolls and hibachi. Our youngest son absolutely loves their chicken hibachi, the fried rice and the Yum Yum sauce. I have always been completely satisfied with every dish and sushi roll that I've gotten here. Every time we've been in here, we've been greeted right away with friendly service. We've had a different server just about every time, but I can tell that they are trained well and very attentive to their tables. It's a quiet and comfortable atmosphere. I support our local eateries as much as I can, but I also have to be honest to save people from wasting money and expectations. We have many wonderful Asian places that serve great food. This isn't one of them. Consistently bad quality, and I have no clue what mutant frozen meat product they are trying to pass off as "katsu". It reminds me of those cheap chicken fried steaks grocery stores used to carry in their meat case. It's evident the sushi guy isn't trained nor very skilled. Full disclosure that many people seem ok with the low quality, but for my money in today's economy I'd rather go where more care is put into what they serve, the food is freshly made, and has a nice atmosphere. No wait time for seating at a hibachi grill on a Saturday. The sushi was phenomenal. The fried rice is by far my favorite of all hibachi restaurants. The shrimp was good. The veggies though - definitely not a fan, and my husband agreed. The yum yum sauce has a little tang to it, which is different. Service was good. Restaurant is clean, staff is friendly. The food is decent but it did take a long time before we were able to eat. We arrived at 5:35pm and they didn't take our order until 5:50pm, we got drinks, salad, and soup, but they did not start cooking our hibachi orders until 6:30pm. That's almost an hour after being seated. Once they did, our order was complete at 6:55pm and we walked out at 7:05pm. 90 mins was a bit long for a Sunday night when they were not busy. Traveling through Semmes my wife and I stopped to grab a bite to eat. The place was nice and clean, everyone was nice. Ordered our food which was around lunchtime. Two lunch hibachis, two rolls of sushi no drink. 29.00 bucks and I'm like wow! Ok no problem. Got our food and it was no 29.00 worth of food plus it was not even average. Very small portions. Four stars may be a bit generous, but in Semmes where the norm is fast food and cheap chains, Sakura is a true oasis. Clean, friendly, fresh tasting, fairly priced, with a decent selection of sushi, rolls and hibachi for the sushiphobe in your group. Are these the best rolls you've ever eaten? If you don't venture outside Mobile County, probably. If you travel and have had sushi in true culinary capitals, then maybe not. We very reluctantly stopped to eat at this place. The reviews were not very complimentary about the service but none of them complained about the food so we decided to try it. We ordered a couple sushi dishes and fried rice. The sushi was as good as any we have eaten at much more expensive restaurants. I had a glass of Cabernet and it was only $3.50!! (Not even happy hour) We made a mistake when we ordered one of our sushi rolls. (Long story) We told our waitress what happened and they corrected the problem and did not charge us even though it was NOT their fault. We eat out 4-5 times per week and never stopped at this place because it looks like a "take out joint" from the outside. It is actually a very clean, spacious, hibachi / sushi restaurant. The food at Sakura is tolerable, but the random application of rules and blatant disregard of what's stated in the menu is frustrating. The girl working the front resembles the girl who lived across the hall from Peter Parker in Spider-Man 2, but uglier in attitude. I ordered the Sushi Deluxe for lunch. The menu states that it comes with soup and salad. I received only soup. When I asked about the salad, I was told that lunch only comes with either/or. This establishment is great! Don't be afraid to order extra rice instead of veggies or vice versa. Fair warning though that the actual hibachi grill experience may not be suitable to children as it's essentially a huge grill with flames and oils that could shoot out. My husband and I ate here for the first time last night. First impression: Great! The restaurant is clean and the staff is friendly. There are plenty of options on the menu from lo mein and fried rice dishes to sushi. They even have Hibachi options available. The appetizers, Crab Rangoons and Beef Egg Rolls, were delicious and came to us so fresh they were too hot to eat right away. The Beef Lo Mein was amazing. The sauce wasn't too sweet and the ratio of beef to veggie to noodle was perfect. The Seafood Tempura dinner was good. It took longer than expected to come to the table (as in we were done with the Lo Mein before the Tempura arrived). It was definitely freshly made, which made the wait not such an inconvenience. I went to Sakura today for lunch. It's the first and last time I will go there. I get there, and they have one female up front who was by herself. She was having to take to go orders, in house orders answer the phone, and run the cash register! I felt sorry for her, obviously short staffed. Most of my experiences with Sushi/Hibachi places have been positive, with good food and good service, in a very timely manner. I literally waited for her 15 mins just to take my order. I only ordered an appetizer, dumplings and shrimp tempura. It took them 30 mins, and then they only brought out the dumplings! She had to go check on tempura, which came out 10 mins later, smh. The food was not good. Dumplings were sitting in a pile of water, slimy and no taste. I was so hungry by that time, I ate them. The Shrimp tempura was not any better. No flavor at all, I couldn't finish it. This lunch that should have taken 20 mins tops from start to finish ended up lasting an hour, and the food was awful. I see the other reviews with most of them positive, so maybe I caught them on a bad day. But it was a bad enough first impression, that I will not go back. read more
